Id love to come down but I'm stuck in Auckland for the moment. That's surely not right. And when I have my network plugged in sometimes my mail fails to send, as in cant reach server. I wonder if the windows box is looking at the Linux box as a server. I can't imagine why though. What ever it is its playing mary hell with my dialup connection. Glenn.

Modem

Just got the word from the people at linmodems that dialup modems are not supported on 64 bit versions of linux. Thats not catastrophic, I can use my Windows laptop to connect to the net and internet share across my home network, until I can get ADSL. Now all I have to do is make my Linux system communicate with my windows laptop. I have manually configured my networking settings on my Linux system, and can ping both ways, but cant get internet sharing up and running. I think the problem is with settings on my windows laptop. OK here is the technical stuff: On my Linux System, Under the edit Connections Tab, I have the following entered: Connection Name: Affordable Wired Network Tab Mac Address: Empty MTU: Automatic 802.1x Security Value: not checked IPv4 Settings: Method: manual Address: 192.168.0.2 Netmask: 255.255.0.2 Gateway: 0.0.0.0 IPv6 Settings: Method: Ignore. Interesting note: whatever value I add in the IPv4 Gateway, always ends up as 0.0.0.0. Shouldn't it be 192.168.0.1? I have turned my PC's Firewall Off (the default firewall for Vista Home Premium). No In the sharing tab I have ticked Enable Internet Connection Sharing Home Networking Connection is ticked in the box under properties of local area network. If, in my Linux system, if I set the IPv4 settings to DHCP, the connection doesn't happen and the system remains disconnected. If I open the connection information box, I get the following: ACTIVE NETWORK CONNECTIONS Affordable Interface: eth0 Hardware Address: 00:26:55:37:81:53 Driver: Forcedeth Speed: 100MB/s Security: None IP Address: 192.168.0.2 Broadcast Address: 192.168.0.3 Subnet Mask: 255.255.255.254. Although the connection says established, whenever I ping 169.254.214.162 or 192.168.0.1 from my Linux system, it doesn't ping. Whenever I ping 192.168.0.2, 192.168.0.3 from my Windows system, it says connection timed out. I have set my Linux System Network Proxy Settings to Direct Internet Connection. Glenn.

WLUG Blade Server

There is a problem with the switch connected to the WLUG Blade server. We are not sure what the problem is, other than some IPs are not working. We possibly need a new switch. Does anyone have one? I'm able to schedule a call-out, if someone is able to go to the data center and replace the switch. A call out will cost us $50 for every 30 min. Is anyone able to help with this? Kiwi PyCon 2010 Call for Participation

Hi, We have another Kiwi PyCon lined up, and we're all expecting it to be as good as last year's event. This year it will be staged in lovely Paihia/Waitangi in the sunny Bay of Islands. It is on the weekend 20-21 November. Find a link below to the "Call for Participation". We are encouraging everybody to come and to participate. Do not feel intimidated, this is a community conference, and we are hosting talks and sessions for all knowledge levels. Be it a tiny demo or show and tell (by doing a 5 minute Lightning Talk), or up to running an hour long tutorial. Or are you interested in the dynamic evolution of a session? New DVD drive unusable in Lucid...

I got hold of an old computer, and managed to put Lucid on it. At the time, it had an old CD-RW drive in it. Now it's got a brand new DVD +/- RW drive, and Lucid can show me that it exists, but it can't mount any discs. In XFCE, it shows the error 'Method "Mount" with signature "ssas" on interface "org.freedesktop.Hal.Device.Volume" doesn't exist'. The problem is pretty much as described on this page: http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1509538. I would have installed Windows, but I didn't have any working Windows XP discs (or a valid key), and even installing Lucid was rather hit and miss. I can't reinstall Lucid to see if that fixes the problem as I'm not at home, and I didn't bring my Lucid disc (or if I did, it's corrupt). If anyone has idea of how to fix this problem (the computer's for my parents, aren't they're not exactly computer savvy, even with Windows XP), I would very much appreciate a solution. If worst comes to worst, would a complete reinstall work (even if I have to download the ISO again, although I'm not sure I have access to a spare CD). I have until Saturday, which is when I have to go home. Sandy (rather desperate)
