Dual booting Linux and XP or Vista

There's an excellent write up here: http://apcmag.com/5162/the_definitive_dual_booting_guide_linux_vista_and_xp Basically summary is install XP/Vista before Linux if possible, but if you can't they explain how to work in with Microsoft boot tools and installers (Vista has become more complex, not simpler).
