Kiwi PyCon 2010 Call for Participation

Hi, We have another Kiwi PyCon lined up, and we're all expecting it to be as good as last year's event. This year it will be staged in lovely Paihia/Waitangi in the sunny Bay of Islands. It is on the weekend 20-21 November. Find a link below to the "Call for Participation". We are encouraging everybody to come and to participate. Do not feel intimidated, this is a community conference, and we are hosting talks and sessions for all knowledge levels. Be it a tiny demo or show and tell (by doing a 5 minute Lightning Talk), or up to running an hour long tutorial. Or are you interested in the dynamic evolution of a session? Then the unconference like Open Spaces will give you just the platform for interaction. Also ... make sure to spread the word. Tell everybody else about it. New DVD drive unusable in Lucid...

I got hold of an old computer, and managed to put Lucid on it. At the time, it had an old CD-RW drive in it. Now it's got a brand new DVD +/- RW drive, and Lucid can show me that it exists, but it can't mount any discs. In XFCE, it shows the error 'Method "Mount" with signature "ssas" on interface "org.freedesktop.Hal.Device.Volume" doesn't exist'. The problem is pretty much as described on this page: http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1509538. I would have installed Windows, but I didn't have any working Windows XP discs (or a valid key), and even installing Lucid was rather hit and miss. I can't reinstall Lucid to see if that fixes the problem as I'm not at home, and I didn't bring my Lucid disc (or if I did, it's corrupt). If anyone has idea of how to fix this problem (the computer's for my parents, aren't they're not exactly computer savvy, even with Windows XP), I would very much appreciate a solution. If worst comes to worst, would a complete reinstall work (even if I have to download the ISO again, although I'm not sure I have access to a spare CD). I have until Saturday, which is when I have to go home. Sandy (rather desperate)

Hey all does anyone know if I can run the latest incarnation of Ubuntu on my desktop machine? Do I need to get drivers for the motherboard or is that included in the distribution? The motherboard is a HP dx2355 MT. Cheers Glenn Morrissey.

Hi All, I have been asked to build-up a couple of secondhand computers (for free) by my work colleagues. I have a couple of boxes and other peripherals but am in need of a main-board with processor and an optical drive (at least dvd read) If anyone is able to donate towards these projects please contact me. Secondary question in case I am overwhelmed with gear. Is there an E-Day in NZ this year?

Xubuntu disc...

Would anyone here have an Xubuntu disc I could borrow? Preferably a text-mode install, I think. I've just got hold of an old Dell Latitude with a 600MHz Celeron and 128MB RAM (4MB given to video), and I can't put anything on it except Puppy Linux (which I don't much like) and Damn Small Linux (which can't properly deal with the USB flash drives I tried with it). Hi I have a 32 build build environment on fedora 12 64bit. The build environment is a complete system (unless the provider has missed something) .. I chroot into the build environment.
