Remote adminstration

Hello all, Is there a tool in ubuntu that a user can start that reports the real world ip address and configures a home router to open a port to allow remote administration? I have a friend or two for whom it would nice to get them to start a program, report to me the details via MSN or Skype or telephone etc and allow me to log in and fix or make a configuration change to their machine. I know how to set things up using ssh etc but that relies on some initial configuration at the their end. KDE has a nice VNC invite function but it won't do the router config part. It appears the likes of KTorrent and Azuereus have the ability to do some to the router via UPnP to open ports up on the router dynamically so I am guessing all this is possible. Cheers

Donated computers -- nice Linux install

If anyone's planning to donate computers (someone mentioned it at the last Saturday Workshop) I've just set up three here. In the process of setting them up nicely with codecs, flash, educational software etc I've created a nice 'standard image' and a script to install it via the network and modify the fstab and grub appropriately so I can go from a zero-wiped drive to a well configured working machine ready to donate in five or ten minutes. If anyone else wants a copy of my script and tar file just give me a call or an email.

OT: Help - disk crash

Hi all, My wife's (Toshiba Satellite 1130, WinXP) laptop has gone legs-up. Sometimes manages to partly boot, sometimes not. I'm unable to determine whether it's the hard disk, or something in the motherboard, or both. (She's had the laptop 3+ years). Can anyone please suggest someone in Hamilton who can try to extract her Thunderbird account data from the disk? (The rest doesn't matter too much, but the email archive is critical). We can afford a reasonable fee, but definitely can't afford to dump hundreds or thousands of $$ into a lengthy disk recovery attempt - just a quick qualified "It's stuffed" at worst, or a USB stick full of rescued data at best would suffice. I'd do it myself but I don't have the hardware here, since the laptop HDD doesn't have a standard IDE or SATA connection. I tried booting the laptop from a 'buntu live disk, but am unable to mount the disk from within Linux. Cheers David
