HP Reference Linux Architecture appears to be about standardising middleware stacks and providing support for that also so that HP can provide support for the hardware, Linux and the middleware. Location is TW.2.07 (http://www.wlug.org.nz/TW) at the University of Waikato. Meeting will start at 7:30pm.

Can anyone help with the relation between assembler command 'movsl' and alignment. All I've been able to find so far is much general stuff in kernel patches about bulk memory moves. -- This fortune is inoperative. Please try another.

New Zealand Ubuntu LoCo

Calling all New Zealand Ubuntu Users! There is now a New Zealand Ubuntu LoCo - A LoCo is a group of people that are interested in promoting and supporting ubuntu in our area. We are following the standard form for Ubuntu LoCos. We have a wiki and forum setup for our members to work together/on Any people that have any interest in ubunu are welcome to join - you dont have to run ubuntu to help out with things to do with the group. I haven't done it much in recent years but in the past chipmakers wouldn't even ask for the cost of shipping the books to NZ. Remote Control Software

Many thank to both Jonathan and Daniel for their replies to my query. My feelings were a bit bruised by Jonathan's assertion that my reference to the hurt desk was a slip. Even the people who worked on the desk knew my name for it and, to their credit, still tried to help me! Together, Jonathan and Daniel have given me the start I needed. Thanks again, Leslie

Remote control software

I gave to the son of friends who live a considerable distance away an old laptop with Damn Small Linux installed. I installed the same distribution on another old laptop which I have, so that I could try to help him if problems arose. We have been able to solve some problems that way, but it's a slow process, with me doing things on my laptop, then emailing instructions to him. I remember working in the past at workplaces big enough to have their own hurt desks and having my computer taken over by someone else in an attempt to solve some problem I had. That's made me wonder what the equivalent Linux software is. I wouldn't have to run that software on my DSL laptop, but could run it on my Fedora desktop, taking over the other DSL laptop over the Internet. I'd be very grateful if someone could recommend any such software, just to get me started.

http://www.compiz.net/viewtopic.php?id=6 As seen in the XGL demo video I showed a couple of WLUG meetings ago, the utility that lets you run applications composited on top of your windows has been released. This lets you fly toasters around on top of your applications. Please debate the usefulness of this feature! Craig
