Hi, Well the server I'm talking about is in South Africa. Needless to say that bandwith is as expensive (or more) as gold down there. The mail server belongs to an ISP I used to work for. It serves more than 40 000 customers on a 5mb pipe(local)! The international pipe is even smaller! Dynamic DNS Service
by Aaron Martin 23 Jan '02

23 Jan '02

As some of you know, I am planning to start a Dynamic DNS service of my own, which will allow people to host real world (i.e. .co.nz) domains on their dynamic ip connections. This is not really aimed at dial-up users, but more at *cough* broadband 'always on' connections (i.e. JetStart). Most of the scripts are complete, and my tests so far have gone well. However, I would like to start a trial with a few people soon. So if you are interested, please fill in the form at the following link, and I will select a few people in the next week to begin the trial. http://www.comtek.co.nz/dyndns/ Cheers, Aaron Martin.

Heh, completely off-topic, but reminds me of something (possibly an urban legend) that to poke some fun at the warnings required on labels, Husqvarna put out a chainsaw with a warning label "warning - chain is sharp. Do not stop with hands or genitals". Or the lady in the states who tried to sue a pharmaceutical because after eating spermicide and then having intercourse, she got pregnant. How obvious do things have to be? The Consumer Guarantee Act uses the word "reasonable" a lot, leaving it up to the judge or jury to decide what is reasonable. I think juries (and judges) could have a lot of difficulty if some obscure technical problem occurred - would you expect to explain how BGP routing works? On the other hand, Telecom advertises Jetstart as "up to 5 times faster than a dial-up modem", but Jetstart (with xtra at least) appears to be massively over-subscribed, although I haven't noticed that much of a slow-down on the Ham. East exchange. But you should see the bitching in xtra.adsl about peak-time slowdowns. I must ALSO say, that in the last 2 hours we have confirmed a location for trialing this service. By the end of this month, we shall be there with a definate answer on the reliability and quality of these connections. We would welcome people to come along and take a look at it themselves, before they actually go ahead with it. Also, we would be MORE than happy to colocate a server of this list free of charge. Community Servers and Mirrors would be encouraged, as we will be having heaps of spare, national bandwith. International will be slightly tight on initially but, as it all grows we won't have problems. Quite honestly, at something like $100+GST p/mth the deal is very very good. You can get NFS to work if you have the right software. There is 3rd party stuff and MS stuff. Not that it comes with Win2k by default. The easiest way to do filesharing from a Linux/Unix box to Windows machines is via Samba. Why you'ld even consider NFS is beyond me. I've not used NFS from win32 - i considered using an NFS client under windows once, but definately not exporting from a windows box. So, unless I magically discover another day between sunday and monday, I cant help too much :/ The name mapping might be eaier to arrange, as there are plenty of equivalent services. Mainly aimed at mapping NTDOM names to unix names. Samba TNG has a winbind daemon which is supposed to do this, IIRC. Exceed is excellent but _way_ expensive. Xwin32 (by Star...something) is good and cheaper. If you install cygwin and XFree86 on Win2k you get a "free" one and bash and lots of gnu tools to play with. XFree for WIn32 was not very stable last time I looked. But was improving fast so maybe it is usable now. Later Bob Brown wrote: > > Hi, > > Can anyone recommend a good X client for Windows? > People don't like to learn new things and expect the "perfect" software to > guess what they are trying to do and do it for them. (shades of XP?) > However to those of us who who know what we are doing such application > behaviour is obtrusive and annoying. This is another large HCI issue. How do you make an interface which is "intuitive" and "user-friendly" so that even a person who has never experienced a similar system before, be able to use it without any form of training; AND make sure that the same interface doesn't get in the way of someone who has been using it for a while? For simple programs, this is no big deal. For complex programs, it is. MS tried to solve this in office2k by hiding options that weren't used often. For a new user, the menus are sparse. There is nothing to confuse them. Experienced users can still navigate their way round and get the required functionality. Lets not mention the problems caused to new users when office decides something isn't used much any more and hides the item from the menu ;) > As far as learning new tools, such as lisp, emacs, or sendmail rewrite rules I > have one teeny problem. I kind of don't like learning legacy, ready to die, > non progressive languages for the sake of maintaining legacy applications. I > would put sendmail in that category. I think its concept is way to clumsy. I > would like to see something a bit more logical and more closely related to the > problem domain rather than idiosyncratic syntax. emacs and lisp are not 'legacy' I cant use ms office at uni - no win32 boxes. I refuse to use staroffice because its a pain in the ass, huge, and mimics a win32 desktop - which is REALLY annoying in linux. I use emacs instead, it does everything I want, and it does it better than the office suites would have. And it has tetris :). sendmail, well... > However I think languages like Java are a good idea. I think any kind of RAD > tool is a good idea. I think languages that create a better representation of > the problem that they are modelling are a good idea. I just don't like > seeing old technology hanging on past its use by date because it's "tried and > proven". There is a big difference between continuing to support legacy apps because they are already implemented in a production system, and implementing a legacy app in a new system. By all means, when rolling out a new mailserver, use exim or postfix or qmail, or whatever you prefer. I think if you tried to replace a legacy sendmail server in a large network you'd create far more problems and spend far more time than it would have taken to have learned how to use sendmail to the point you can fix the problem. > Yes, we should be willing to learn, if its progress. As long as its not COBOL. > ;) Even if its not progress, we should be willing to learn. How much of the software / it consultant industry in the 90's was to do with "Y2K bugs" ? Which could all fall under the domain of 'legacy applications'. COBOL's another kettle of fish entirely ;) (although, a good deal of aforementioned 'y2k bugs' would have been for cobol systems) Daniel ------------ WLUG - The Waikato Linux Users Group WWW: http://wlug.linuxcare.co.nz To unsubscribe, send an email to majordomo(a)list.waikato.ac.nz with "unsubscribe wlug" in the body of the message.

In that case, you *still* need to provide a wrapper to magically > determine whether to update the ldap store or the system files, or to > provide a new useradd to replace the old one. If you're using ldap to store site wide information that information should only be about human users. "System" (mysql, bin, root, mail) users should probably be in /etc/passwd. They rarely have passwords (except root) anyway. Also if that sort of info wasn't stored in reliable places (ie, in a file) you could stop your system from booting or functioning by DoS'ing slapd or having an incorrect configuration. Even if slapd crashed you could log in as root and restart it. PAM allows for fall back authentication. (olly, you may already know this, but its for the rest of the group as well, if they didn't know it ;) it already has lines like: optflags: i486 -O2 -march=i486 optflags: i586 -O2 -march=i586 optflags: i686 -O2 -march=i686 meaning it will compile for the correct architecture, if you set it up right. later on in the file is a section with a whole lot of 'buildarchtranslate' options, such as buildarchtranslate: i586: i386 changing this to read 'i586' means rpm builds i586 target rpms by default. alternatively you can pass the --target=i586 to have the same effect, i beleive. of course, stuff built for an i686 will have problems running on an i386, so be careful when building rpms for other computers! also.. re recent conversation on .rpmmacro entries... if you look in /usr/lib/rpm/macros it has all the macros you might want to set. Some are only useful in the spec file of an srpm, but a lot could be useful. Probably not a wise idea to change this file directly, override the options in your $HOME/.rpmmacros file if you want to play ------------ WLUG - The Waikato Linux Users Group To unsubscribe, send an email to majordomo(a)list.waikato.ac.nz with "unsubscribe wlug" in the body of the message.

> What _should_ happen IMO is that it gives you some nice screens saying > "Please enter what you wish the system adminstration password to be. This > password will be required for making changes to system > configuration." This then becomes the root password - for a newbie > friendly distro there should be able to be a "system adminstration > password" without the concept of a root account. "If you want to perform > manual system adminstration (not recommended for most users) log in as root > with the adminstration password you just chose." It's reasonaly easy to prevent users logging in to X as root, as this is 99% of your "misinformed users" they quickly discover thaat they either use su, or the gui tools (that conveiently prompt you for a password), or they use a text console. (If they can figure out what the text consoles are, then they're doing ok. - they won't use it for daily use). Just change 'allowroot' in the 'security' section of /etc/X11/gdm/gdm.conf to false. > Has anyone considered a setup where it automatically logs you into X using > this "standard PC account" - a bit more insecure yes, but good for a home PC? > I installed MS networking login on Mums PC once so I could log into file > shares on my Linux box. With a bit of tweaking you can setup gdm to show a picture of each user (and their name), and not have it prompt for a password. (click on the picture of you, and press 'enter'.....) > >Given that you can do damage as root (explanation later) why would you > >want to ruin your $n000 PCs configuration, when, for very little hassle > >really, you can protect it from yourself! > > Cos you're lazy, and never think of it. Cos you're an ex-Windows user who > doesn't understand, and would rather just log in as root every time. Cos > it wasnt the proper default. Cos you trust your programs not to go wrong. Because windows: * Hides critical information to you so you can't stuff it up. (evidence by the htmlified /windows directory) * Asks for confirmation on everything. * Locks system critical components so you can't do anything with them ("That file is in use by the operating system and cannot be deleted at this time"). Linux: * Is transparent - you can see whats going on under the hood. * Assumes that you ment what you said * Doesn't believe in preventing you from doing what your trying to do. Ever tried to delete a file under windows which is causing problems? watched it fail? :) Ever tried deleting critical libraries under unix? watched the rest of your system fail instead? > Should I be logging into Windows as a seperate user? > Do you? Your documents. They all belong to you. > (All of your documents are belong to you!) Several programs when run as root use the system config's, not the per user ones. You change the config to your desire - now everyone's config is like that -- and they can't change it. Some programs (such as minicom) are nice enough to warn you that they are doing this. Others aren't so forgiving. Programs such as bitchx are security nightmares, running them as root or otherwise is a security hazard, but I doubt many people would give up their IRC addiction :) > If any processes have remote exploit bugs in them, even if they're user > space, you can download the password file and then run crack on it. > Knowing a standard home user their root password will be "sex" or "fred". heh, Redhat at least is smart enough to prevent people inflicting this upon themselves unless they know how to SU to root and change it themselves. The _best_ way is to get hold of the .spec file from the 4.0.1 source RPM, tweak it as necessary for anything that might have changed in 4.0.3 then use that, along with tarballs of the 4.0.3 source and the rpm command to build your own RPMs, which you then upgrade to via the normal methods. Configure the OS for the systems and mass produce it. Doing all the builds from the ground up would be both time consuming and open to error should a step be forgotten. Preplanning the software would be important - like the comment made at the meeting regarding firewalls and sewing them up too tight to allow the user to install ICQ - preinstall ICQ, factor it into the firewalling and it's there if the user wants it. If they don't, they don't have to use it. Get > Windows, everyone I know uses Windows (perhaps hands over warez Windows > CD)" Doze is not worth pirating. > Vicious cycle. Until Linux can interact 100% with Windows, how are you > going to sell it as a desktop OS? By pointing out that the viruses that infect Windows also won't run on Linux - especially VBS-based email and Word viruses. In order to make Linux 100% interactive with Windows, you'd have to make Linux as brain damaged as Windows. WinE has made some good advances in getting some Windows-based software running. Documents and graphics files are generally no problem. Providing our Linux box has Arial and Times New Roman fonts (they have extended characters in them that do not display if viewed using some Type A fonts - makes the conversion of some Word docs to Star Office problematic) most Word docs can be converted into Star Office or Applixware Office. Graphic files - jpg, gif etc - can be read without problems. Even animated gifs can be read. There are plenty of Linux games out there, including a lot that are popular on Windows that have been ported across or a similar game has been written from scratch. As to accessing the disk - my standard for Linux installs is to add another mount point: /mnt/msfloppy - same as /mnt/floppy but the type is VFAT. This allows a disk formatted on a doze box to be read and any *legitimate* stuff copied onto the linux box. Most the "cool programs" in the public domain that don't have a Linux equivalent are pure fluff (such as exe files that give a short video clip of someone stripping/having sex etc). Those that aren't in the public domain aren't allowed to be copied - what's the problem? You can get mpegs with people stripping if you're into that sort of thing - and they run fine on Linux. (oops ;P) The great joy about Linux is that the stuff written for it is largely free to be distributed, tested and modified (with a few exceptions) being able to pirate copyrighted software on your Linux box seems to me to defeat the purpose. The idea I have is to enlist more people in the notion of having a great community where you're *allowed* to circulate stuff that people have freely given, not to promote stealing stuff that people have invested moiney in and expect a return from. Hackers and Warez-d00dz both agree that software should be free. The main difference is that hackers say "here's what I've created, take it, distribute it, if it suits you, use it, if you can improve it let me know. This is my gift." A warez-d00d says "here's something I stole from someone else, I don't think they deserve to get a return on their investment." I for one agree with the hacker outlook. Many hackers are paid to create programs for those companies that charge money for their software; what the hacker creates during *free time*, for the love of hacking, is what is given away. But to eat the hacker maybe works for Broderbund or Adobe. I do not begrudge those companies who invest money in their product making a fair return. Let those who wish to charge for their creations do so, let those who wish to give their creations away do so as well. Let's try this scenario: 1. "Hey, I got this cool new computer with Linux pre installed!" 2. "Sweet. Hey, heres this disk with a game/cool program on it" 1. "Erm.. I can't load it or use it sorry" 2. "That sucks dude. Get Windows, everyone I know uses Windows 1. "And look at how many people voted for [insert favourite political scapegoat]! Actually, I've already got a Linux version of that game and I'm not interested in stealing someone's stuff when I've got a whole community out there giving me cool stuff for free. You can spend the rest of your life worrying about whether you'll get busted, if you like, I don't have that worry. The Linux-based software I've looked at so far that is not freely distributable is extremely well priced. Compare Applixware Office - $220 - with M$ Oriface 2000 - $1080. Gee, I wonder which I'd rather buy... Photoshop - certainly worth stealing IMHO, but the GIMP is free, so why bothr? AutoCAD is bloody horrifically priced, the Linux equivalent is free. That's what I'm proposing to do (not being able to afford a replacement for my Star Dozetype 4000) I think I'll try hanging an a4 refill and a biro of the back of my Linux box parallel port - it might be easier. I can't wait for the day when I can consign Windows to the rubbish bin entirely but before then I need to get a Linux-compliant laser- printer (inkjets don't measure up, never will) and convert all my M$ Oriface documents into something that Linux apps can read (#$##$% Microsoft Word's "smart quotes" and other "helpful" characters don't seem to come across into Star Office documents.) For the sake of the blissfully ignorant (and I hope there are some of you out there) "smart" quotes is M$'s option that automatically turns ' and " into "sixes" and "nines" or "sixty-sixes" and "ninety- nines" - depending on whether the apostrophe or double-quote appears to the right or left of a space. Dunno what character set they use, but it doesn't convert back across to ASCII char-set *even* when you tell Word to SaveAs "Text" (which loses all font formatting). Word-produced RTF files can't even be reliably imported into editors that use ASCII. Other "smart" punctuation includes en- and em-spaces, en- and em-dashes and other typographical marks. OK, It can be turned off, but any docs created while it was turned on need to have every single smart punctuation mark replaced before converting to Star Office files. (The only way I've discovered how to do this so far is to use global replace to first of all replace every " or ' or em-space with a character not used anywhere in the document (I used the tilde) then go back and replace all instances of that character with the correct one - assuming "smart punctuation" is turned off ther characters will be standard ASCII. You can't replace " with " in Word) So, regrettably, until I've edited every single document I have on my Windows box and scraped up enough for a real laser printer, I'm going to need to learn how to send my print output down the wire to a doze box to print. Hi, I know this is probably a FAQ, but which file do I modify to allow root to login from otherplaces other than the console. I'm "su"ing to root at the moment which works but it's a pain... RE: [wlug] RH6.0 & DNS?

I've already got them to put entries in their >c:\windows\hosts files but it's messy. Hmm, okay. >Okay - so how do I find out what IHUG's are? Oh, i assumed your isp was clear because of your email address :) 203.29.160.4 203.29.160.2 :) >Yeah, I'd appreciate that - please do. Start with "You add entries to your >DNS by ...." <sigh>. :) this will be a LONG post i feel... Its probably worth sending to the mailing list however, so that anyone else who is curious about setting up DNS can have a look... First of all, redhat 6.0 ships with bind-8.2-6 do 'rpm -qa | grep bind' as root to see what bind rpms you have installed, if any you should have bind-8.2-6 bind-devel-8.2-6 bind-utils-8.2-6 or something very similar (ie, the revision number might have changed for your release of rh6.0) if you dont have these then install them.. (either use an X-based package management tool like gnorpm, or use rpm from the command line..) put your rh6.0 cd in the cdrom drive mount /mnt/cdrom rpm -Uvh /mnt/cdrom/Redhat/RPMS/bind* and you should be away :) right... now for the config files at this point i VERY strongly recommend you go away and read the docs for bind at www.isc.org here's some pointers Some config hints for bind 8.2.1 (slightly newwer version that the rh6.0 one, but still applies) http://www.isc.org/view.cgi?/products/BIND/misc/config_hints.phtml Bind 8.2 configuration guide http://www.isc.org/view.cgi?/products/BIND/docs/config/index.phtml bind 8.2 master file format http://www.isc.org/view.cgi?/products/BIND/docs/bind8.2_master-file.phtml The BOG (BIND Operations Guide) was a very useful resource for bind-4.9.7, but this version of bind is oldish and you should probably use 8.2 series. the configuration guide tells you what to do, more or less, but we can have a look at them here too... i'll add comments, these are indicated by // preceeding ------ /etc/named.conf ------ // make sure you get all the {'s and ;'s in the right place here options { directory "/var/named"; // this tells named where to set its base dir to. }; logging { category lame-servers { null; }; / these send all the boring errors that you dont category cname { null; }; // care about to null, rather than actually logging them }; zone "." in { type hint; // the 'hint' file is a set of root servers. these are important if you file "named.cache"; // want your dns server to work on address outside your zones }; // i'll show how to get a named.cache file later zone "0.0.127.in-addr.arpa" in { // the 0.0.127 zone is the reverse zone for your localhost type master; // its a master file notify no; // dont notify file "slave/127.0.0.in-addr.arpa"; // the file name }; zone "foo.org" in { // forward lookup for your 'domain' on your local network type master; //master file file "slave/foo.org"; //filename }; zone "0.168.192.in-addr.arpa" in { //reverse lookup for your domain, on 192.168.0.xxx type master; // note the reverse order of ip addresses file "slave/0.168.192.in-addr.arpa"; }; ---- eof----- right, now in /var/named you should have some files... /var/named/named.cache there is possibly already a named.cache file, but we should update it anyway.. anonymous ftp to ftp.internic.net cd domain get named.cache cp named.cache /var/named/named.cache -f okay, thats your cache file set up. now to set up some zone files first of all, make a directory in /var/named to hold the zone files.. mkdir /var/named/zone cd /var/named/zone now.. there are two types of zone files.. forward lookup (which contain mappings from hostnames to ip addresses) and reverse lookup (which contain mappings from ip addresses to hostnames) first we'll look at the forward zone files. /var/named/zone/foo.org (or whatever you call it, make sure the entry in the named.conf file points to the right place tho) ; denotes a comment in these files ------------------- ; ; /var/named/zone/foo.org ; zone file for foo.org ; 27/7/1999 @ IN SOA server. root.server. ( 1999072701 ; Serial 8H ; Refresh 2H ; Retry 1W ; Expire 1D) ; minimum ; first of all, lets look at these. ; the @ inserts the domain information by default. so, it expands out to foo.org ; the rest of that line says that the Start Of Authority (SOA) for the domain is server ; and the admin email is root(a)server ; the serial number is important. when you change a zone file, change its serial number, ; otherwise bind will not reload it. ; also, bind will only load /higher/ serial numbers. you can number any way you like, for ; example starting at 1, but it is sometimes handy to put them in the format yyyymmdd ; where yyyy == year, dd = day of month, mm = month, rr = revision number. ; the refresh, retry, expire and minimum values are all required by named, it tells it how ; often to do the related action. ; ie, Refresh this zone every 8 hours. rertry an ip on this zone every 2 ; NS server.foo.org. ;specifies that the NameServer for the domain is server.foo.org. MX 10 server.foo.org. ; Mail eXchange for the domain is server.foo.org. the number is the priority, 10 is a good ; number to leave there. NOTE both of these have a trailing '.' - if you DONT include this it ; will expand out with your domain name after it (ie, to server.foo.org.foo.org ) !!! localhost A 127.0.0.1 ; A records point from the hostname to its ip. this is the ip of the localhost (the server) server A 192.168.0.2 ; this is the A record for the server, assuming its ip addresss is 192.168.0.2 HINFO "Pentium" "Linux 2.2" TXT "Gateway / Server" ; these lines aren't needed, but add extra information. There are a lot of extra lines like this ; dont worry about them if you like - not including them is perhaps a /good/ thing. mail CNAME server www CNAME server ftp CNAME server proxy CNAME server dns CNAME server ; CNAMES are records that point to an A record. Not needed really, but sometimes is nicer ; (and more obvious) to use 'proxy' for your proxy settings, and 'mail' in your mailclient setup. ; Various DNS experts discourage the usage of CNAME, because it can lead to trouble if ; you do things like point your MX record to a CNAME. ; You could use multiple A records (eg, 'ftp A 192.168.0.2' but that gets messy, ; and you only have one reverse lookup anyway windows A 192.168.0.1 ; A record for your windows computer dialin1 A 192.168.0.10 dialin2 A 192.168.0.11 ; A records for your dialin ip addresses. ; I forget how dialing into a linux server works, particularly with regards to ip allocation, ; you may only be able to specify 1 ip address for each dialin device. ------ EOF ----- thats the end of it! there are a lot of things you COULD include in there, but thats all you need. now, onto the reverse lookup zone files /var/named/zone/0.0.127.in-addr.arpa --------------- ; ; /var/named/zone/0.0.127.in-addr.arpa ; zone file for 0.0.127.in-addr.arpa ; 27/7/1999 @ IN SOA localhost. root.localhost ( 1999072701 8H 2H 1W 1S ) ; note, we condensed everything down here. the whitespace in the previous example ; is for clarity, you dont need it or the comments at all. NS server.foo.org. ; nameserver entry. note the trailing '.' 1 PTR localhost. ; PTR record. this is a reverse lookup for 1.0.0.127.in-addr.arpa (ie, if you do 'nslookup ; 127.0.0.1' - it'll look in this file, find the PTR entry for '1', and reply with the given value. ; again note the trailing '.' - if you forgot that it would expand to localhost.0.0.127.in-addr.arpa ------ EOF ---- /var/named/zone/0.168.192.in-addr.arpa ---------------- ; ; /var/named/zone/0.168.192.in-addr.arpa ; zone file for 0.168.192.in-addr.arpa ; 27/7/1999 @ IN SOA server. root.server. I do urge you to go and read the documentation on www.isc.org, and the docs that come with the bind rpms. UNDERSTAND them... no point in doing things like this if you dont understand them.. Good luck. you shouldn't have many problems (unless i included some typos there), but if you do, read the docs, work it out, and then report back to the list telling us what went wrong and how you fixed it :) Daniel Lawson

I think people in general are afraid of change, If the software they currently use does what they want they see no reason to change to something else. Also with the majority of people using computers today being only semi computer literate (or even Illiterate), most people arn't interested in investing the time to learn a new interface/method of work, even if it is 1000 times better > > This in turn hinders the spread of linux, and in effect, adds to the > problem... > > What do you all think? How can we help (short of nuking M$!)? I recon the best way to help is to get in at grass roots level, it the newbie's just starting, ie school kids, tech students. If they are introduced to things before they get into the full workforce, cause once they get out there they will be taught one way of doing things and if that way is MS your stuffed. People are often > scared to take that leap away from windows, and may need to fall back on > windows apps for productivity/compatibility reasons. > > This in turn hinders the spread of linux, and in effect, adds to the > problem... > I think your right. for Linux to really catch on in the mainstream there is a need for a office compatable GUI interface. I think that star office 5.0 is on the right track as it is fully cross compatable with M$ office and has versions in windoze, mac, .... ad infinitum, and of course Linux. With interfaces like KDE you can have a user interface that seems "normal" to an average user, as a result they can use it, then drop down to the "guts of the OS" to play with it later. Personally my approach at present is twofold, I am trying to get a stable reduced kernal size desktop enviroment, that will boot to a graphical desktop with my apps ......netscape, dial up PPP, Mail, Star Office .... etc and not carry too much "fat" ( so it loads quicker with out requiring huge memory) on it for a single desktop machine (the most common win95/98) system. While this seems crazy, it is a start point that gets a person using linux in some form. Later they can add the server/ network features if thy need them or want to play with them. ........... Oh no another dist .... AARRRRRRGGGGGGGHHHHHHHH ( Not really) Interesting that Caldera have moved a similar direction with col 2.2 ... Which I am planning to get installed this weekend to see how they have done ..... Sadly I think it will still be fairly bloated (Gut feel from reading the 151 problems I get from the caldera-users list) My other arrow is that I have been trying to push for a regular "Linux" ... not PC, or Mac, or ..... gathering where people can play with/learn about/obtain Linux in a form that is not too much like a meeting for software engineers. Sadly interest from the list has been very poor. Maybe once we are up an running I will be able to get some of you who know what you are doing to come and sort out our mess :-) Main problems to be solved . - Hardware support !!! The list on the Net are just too old, We need to know what new hardware works with linux, and what doesn't ... before we start installing this. Perhaps someone should start a local NZ database . ( Why are you all now looking at me that way ???????) Ok that is at least a start with my 2 cents worth .... I guess that shows how bad inflation really is . But I am a technician and a manager, not really a software person, so please consider that as you shoot me down in flames, ok ?
