Hi all, Can anyone help me out with my dilemma? Here is a brief overview of my situation... Research: I have been trying to get the above mentioned to work for some time! I have read Doc from these sources: http://dansguardian.org/?page=documentation http://dansguardian.org/?page=dgflow http://www.nyetwork.org/wiki/DansGuardian And...other posts/threads and doc as well! Mission: We are a mid-sized organization trying to set-up a Proxy server to cache & filter requests from Windows users. We "would" like to set-up all the above in the email "subject" line on one machine. Can we use it as a gateway like transparent proxying suggests? Can I use a test machine w/ a "DHCP" address & will the FW(iptables) still work properly? In what order should I configure, whast type of logging could I use to troubleshoot? I know it has been done and I have little time now, sigh. So, I found your list while searching google noticed that WPAD might be a better way to go, is this true in some cases? We do not want to have to change "browser settings" on all of the client machines. I am unfamiliar with a transparent proxy versus other options but wonder if someone could help me out with doc? Finally, I may be missing something very easily, if so, please forgive my carelessness. Is there a simple procedure to follow so I install simply and than add complexity as I go? Tryed installing one app at a time starting w/ Squid then DG w/ plug-in, then IP tables but to no avail... I used the standard config files in many cases and will attach those files. The errors I receive are when setting my browser to "direct connection" are "ERROR Requested URL could not be retrieved" & "Access Denied". There have been times when Squid/DG & IPtables filtering seem to work, but would filter "all" sites most of the time. Most of the time when I enable the FW or IPtables it does not seem to work correctly. Meanwhile, I am trying a new distro - RH AS 2.1 server and will patch 2/ up2date. Please view my attached doc and conf files. root(a)Linux-Test dansguardian]# cat /etc/sysconfig/iptables # Generated by iptables-save v1.2.8 on Tue Jun 29 16:49:36 2004 *nat :PREROUTING ACCEPT [22:4542] :POSTROUTING ACCEPT [1:132] :OUTPUT ACCEPT [1:132] -A PREROUTING -p tcp -m tcp --dport 80 -j REDIRECT --to-ports 8080 COMMIT # Completed on Tue Jun 29 16:49:36 2004 # Generated by iptables-save v1.2.8 on Tue Jun 29 16:49:36 2004 *filter :INPUT ACCEPT [627:56813] :FORWARD ACCEPT [0:0] :OUTPUT ACCEPT [293:29548] -A INPUT -s ! 127.0.0.1 -p tcp -m tcp --dport 3128 -j DROP COMMIT # Completed on Tue Jun 29 16:49:36 2004 Any help is greatly appreciated, if possible. Hi, My Dad has asked me to help with a dialup connection problem to ValueNet. He has Mandrake 9.0 and it works fine when connecting to Xtra. connection. The ValueNet connection also works fine from a win95 PC. But this is implementation specific and > not guaranteed. It's called a virtual machine for a reason. Please clarify in your mind the differences among the language, the libraries and the JVM. Then you will realise that the specification for the Java language is silent about whether it is to be interpreted, byte-compiled or compiled to machine code. That is why I responded to your incorrect statements: "Java is a compiled language. It's just not compiled to the native machine code." by explicitly mentioning the JVM. You will also then realise why your claim that IBM has "forked" java is incorrect. (Aristotle points this out to you). As to fears of forking, they are genuine. here is a link for you: http://firebird.sourceforge.net/ And here is an excerpt from one of the pages from that site: --QUOTE------------------------------------------------------------- In August 2000, Borland Software Corp. (formerly known as Inprise) released the beta version of InterBase 6.0 as open source. The community of waiting developers and users preferred to establish itself as an independent, self-regulating team rather than submit to the risks, conditions and restrictions that the company proposed for community participation in open source development. A core of developers quickly formed a project and installed its own source tree on SourceForge. They liked the Phoenix logo which was to have been ISC's brandmark and adopted the name "Firebird" for the project. Because Borland's open source efforts regarding InterBase never really took off beyond prime release of the source code and the company returned its focus to closed commercial development, Firebird became THE Open Source version of InterBase. --END OF QUOTE-------------------------------------------------------- <ethical_rant> You see what these f--ks did? Now I don't give a shit what reasons they had, they should have gotten over it like Netscape/Mozilla did. It goes against the values I hold -- respect the company for the steps they took to open their sources and work with them for the benefit of all. If you have a problem, get some self-respect and write your own damn code from scratch. As more companies open their sources, I hope that similar sentiments to mine will enter the hacker ethic. </ethical_rant> > The main reason is so that Java's fortunes are not tied to Suns > fortunes. Which frankly are looking a little bleak. > ... Java as a platform is not tied to Sun's fortunes. Read the license, write code and give the code to Sun. You, IBM and MS can all do that. So far I have seen two arguments for "open sourcing" Java that are worth considering: (1) It will be convenient for Debian users since it will enable apt to transparently manage any packages. (2) Freedom will be good for the platform. To (1): This is a problem with Debian and apt. It can't be the download (I do it on my 33K) it is the hoops that /Debian/ and /apt/ require us to jump through. To (2): Yes. Let us hope that if it happens, we get a license similar in spirit to that of freedom, that Sun is given the respect it deserves and is able to profit fairly from it. And boy if I see the Firebird faction turning their evil green eyes thataway ... Sid

Far too much > work. This is not the same as my example. Interbase was originally close sourced, Samba was always open and developed by the community. If a large part of the community (read people who contributed code) feel the need for a change of direction, that is fine by me (similarly, I feel fine about X.org). You see these guys working on Samba-TNG and X.org contributed greatly to the original products. Now the f__ks who quickly set up their own Interbase repository and called it Firebird did not contribute a single line of code to what was a mature product (Interbase) -- they couldn't, it had been closed. They did not have the pedigree of the likes of Leighton or Packard and friends who also forked their originals. Forking in itself is not bad, it's who forks it and why. These ethical questions can be seen as relative. Hackers will vote with their fingers. If enough agree with my sentiments, these will enter the hacker ethic. (I hope I've made myself clearer). > >To (1): This is a problem with Debian and apt. It can't be the > >download (I do it on my 33K) it is the hoops that /Debian/ and > > /apt/ require us to jump through. > > If the license says you can't redistribute it, then any > distribution which prefers to maintain it's own repositories will > have this problem. I don't want to get into a discussion of what the different parties mean by "redistribute". Let's just look at it empirically: Java comes on every major Linix distribution disk apart from Debian. FreeBSD has negotiated a license with Sun that allows it to distribute Java from the FreeBSD site. NetBSD are doing something similar. Apple comes with Java. Clearly the problem is the Debian stance. Distributions can choose to be flexible. We all know of Linus's flexibility wrt to binary drivers "in" the kernel just as we know of RMS's opposite view. For Debian it is a religious question. That's fine. > Sure, you can always download it manually. And you can go and set > up your environment manually to path it correctly. And you can > setup binfmt so that you can just run a java app without having to > know it's java. What happens when you want to put a package that > depends on the jvm into your repository however? It is *really* > messy having a dependancy installed from source. Then your package sytem has a weakness with "having a dependancy installed from source". You could improve your packaging system or mandate (I'm being cheeky: substutute "ask") that all software conform with your broken packaging system. > >To (2): Yes. Gotcha!
by Michael & Colleen McDonald 28 Jun '04

28 Jun '04

Not so long ago I decided to dabble my toes in the waters of Linux, to broaden my experience and see for myself if it can truly replace that "other" operating system. I purchased a new system with 2 disk drives and proceeded with some testing. Since I wasn't ready to break "the ties that bind", my plan was to install Linux on the slave drive and that other system on the master. Fedora Core 1 loaded nicely onto the slave drive. But ... on booting the system, "GRUB" would appear on the screen (no menu) and there it would stay. Fortunately I had created a boot floppy. Away I could go, having to boot from floppy. Just as well I had a floppy drive! That boot floppy was transferred to CD within a couple of days. The other operating system was loaded on to the master drive. No problems there, but it was interesting to note that many drivers had to loaded (with much rebooting of the system) before all the hardware was operational - whereas Linux coped "out of the box". Was surprised to find that my system drive was "G:" ... because of the Linux partitions set up earlier. Along comes Fedora Core 2. Great! The install went like a charm ... until the reboot. Of course, Grub still wouldn't load. The boot diskette (CD) for the 2.4 Kernel proved useless too! I've tried, without success to recreate the loader, even trying to put the loader on /hda. Even went to the extent of renaming some files in the boot partition on /hdb1 ... that caused the installer to think I needed a new loader (which is what I intended!), but when it came to the end of the installation it said the loader was up to date so it didn't need to replace it. "Help!" ... any suggestions please? Michael

OT - Need a CD copy - Visual C#.net standard Version 2002
by Gavin Denby 28 Jun '04

I have a fully licensed version of this software, but disk 1 has been damaged, and I cannot install it. Microsoft will sell me replacement Media at $50NZ but before I fork out more money on this, I thought I'd ask if anyone has a set of this with CD 1 that I can get a Backup of to allow me to work past the damaged bit of the media on disk 1, and install the software on my new laptop. otherwise its more dollars for Microsoft NZ that I would rather spend elsewhere. I need this for a course. so any help will be appreciated. After that I can migrate to mono. Please reply to me off list as this really has nothing to do with Linux, but since we have so many smart programmers here, someone may be able to help me hang on to a few dollars. Sorry if this traffic is a annoyance, I won't ask here again. honest.

Wee problem with Samba
by Shane Taylor 24 Jun '04

24 Jun '04

Hi. I'm having a wee problem with Samba. It's configured to be the Netbios Master Browser for my home network. It's working perfectly ..... except that the browse list only contains a single machine - the Samba machine. I can get to any other machine using it's netbios name - \\megans - and everything works fine. The logs all show that it's working alright - it wins all the browser elections and no errors show up. The only weird thing I've noticed is that in the "log.<machine name>" lanman.c is mentioned after a client connection is made (shouldn't come into things at all but I don't think it's any problem??). Otherwise, things look just peachy. I've tried all the usual stuff (smbstatus/smbclient/nbtstat .... created shares and they show up etc), google, docs from all over the place blah yadda etc. Not a damn thing :( Any ideas?? Debian update not working
by Glenn Ramsey 24 Jun '04

24 Jun '04

Hi, I'm running Debian/testing and I just tried to install a new package that had to update a lot of dependencies. Some of the downloads timed out, this is because they are outdated and no longer exist in the pool, so I need to do an apt-get update. This usually works out fine but right now apt-get update doesn't update the package files. I checked the packages it wants on the Debian website and they have been updated. Why would apt-get update have suddenly stopped working properly? (I'm also using apt-proxy but I don't think that should affect it) g -- Glenn Ramsey <glenn(a)componic.co.nz> 07 8627077 http://www.componic.co.nz

HP-UX 11i expertise wanted
by Pete 17 Jun '04

17 Jun '04

Hi UNIXers, I'm working on a port of a very large C++ project from Windows to Unix. The aim is to get the system running successfully under HP-UX 11i. The application is multithreaded and runs as a service under Windows and as a daemon under Unix. The application uses the 3rd party libraries boost, CenterPoint XML, OTL++ and libodbc++. It currently interacts with SQL Server and Oracle databases. I have to say that I'm definitively not a Unix person; my skills are in the Windows arena. Even so I have managed to convert the code successfully so that it runs fine under Linux RH8 and RH9 (compiled using GCC 3.2). However, I'm extremely frustrated to find that I have a major problem with the software under HP-UX: it seems to CORE dump after running for "some time" (typically 2 - 3hrs). I simply don't know enough about HP-UX and urgently need someone assist me. The skills that I'm seeking are: - HP9000/HP-UX 11i - C++ - STL, pthread (or even better boost::thread) - GCC and GDB One word of caution: the HP9000 machine I'm using for testing is located in the USA and Internet access is relatively slow. I have managed using an X-client, but response times make this a fairly impracticable option. I'd love to hear from anyone who might be interested. This message from Peter got eaten by the "too big" fairy the first time around -- Craig -- Thanks for your many insightful comments Perry. > What signal is it dying with? The message I get is: Program exited with signal 11 (Segmentation Fault) However, from the attached stack frame you can see that erros occur inside stl code. In this particular case, it all has to do with simple std::string manipulations which require resizing the strings internal buffer. However, the error can also occur at entirely different locations. Also, I'm really puzzled why I only see 11 frames on the stack for this thread. What the code actually does is call a method of class ExceptionContext to write a message to a log file (the method behaves basically like sprintf). The following code reflects somehow what the code might have been doing at the time of the crash (error occurs at gEC.ReportDiagnostic()): #include "Exception.h" ExceptionContext gEC("mylogfile.log"); void foo() { std::string strDB = "Database"; std::string strTbl = "Table"; std::string strK1 = "12"; std::string strK2 = "A92bit12"; std::string strK3 = "901-12"; gEC.ReportDignostic("Table %s has key %s", (std::string("[") + strDB + "." + strTbl + "]").c_str(), (std::string("[") + strK1 + "/" + strK2 + "/" + strK3 + "]").c_str()); } Clearly, there are more frames on the stack, but I simply don't understand how to get the complete picture. But don't be fooled by this stack trace; a fact is that the error is everytime totally different and only occurs under HP-UX. > Linux has a great program called "valgrind" that can be used for > debugging memory and threading issues. If you can get it to compile > under Linux on x86 I'd **highly** recommend you run valgrind on your > program. I will most definitively try this one out. Pete

Waikato 2020 Communications Trust
by Daniel Lawson 17 Jun '04

17 Jun '04

Matt Brown and I recently (4 June) had a meeting with Prof Ted Zorn, regarding the Waikato 2020 Communications Trust and the Waikato Linux Users Group. Prof Zorn is in the Department of Management Communication in the School of Management at Waiakto University. The 2020 Communications Trust is a charitible trust set up with the basic objective of promoting “… discussion and investigation of ideas, knowledge and technology in new media and computer networking". The full objectives can be found at http://www.2020.org.nz/trust/princip.htm. They are basically looking at improving community absorption of modern IT, and improving the general understanding of IT in the community. One of the projects the Waikato 2020 Communications Trust is working on at the moment is called the ‘Waikato Community Net’, or “WaiCN” for short. This is being modelled on fairly successfull project run by the Wellington 2020 Communications Trust, unsurprisingly called the ‘Wellington Community Net’ or WCN for short. (http://www.wcn.net.nz/) WaiCN will provide a portal for community sites, which perhaps wouldn’t otherwise be able to decently host websites. This will have a secondary effect of perhaps becoming a de facto standard for looking for community information in this region. WaiCN also aims to improve community groups’ education overall, and to integrate and coordinate other community-oriented ICT programs. (Most of that was lifted from the project outline.) Prof Zorn contacted the WLUG to see if we were interested in working together with W2020CT (I’ll start abbreviating things here) on this project, and in general. We seem to share some similar goals, although ours are primarily focussed around F/OSS software, and the W2020CT is at least nominally neutral on this issue. Matt, Prof Zorn and I had a nice chat over lunch, during which we discussed the objectives of both groups, and how well we’d been meeting them. We pressed the point that some of the ultimate goals of OSS are not ‘to beat Mickey$haft’, but to provide choice, and to provide open standards. As it happens, a ready example of where open standards should be adhered to was provided by Prof Zorn himself, as he emailed the project blurb for WaiCN out as a MS Word document. Prof Zorn seemed interested in possible collaboration between the two groups, and Matt and I came away with the same feeling. He is going to talk with the Trustees of the W2020CT, and at some point we’ll swap representatives for meetings and get a better idea of what each group is doing. I personally think this collaboration will be useful from a couple of viewpoints. W2020CT provides a good vehicle for neutral advocacy of choice, and of open standards. This doesn’t mean they’ll push linux everywhere, but it might mean they make people aware of the choice. Also, they are part of a much larger organisation than WLUG, with better access to resources. Some of the people in the W2020CT and the national 2020CT are in fairly “high” places in terms of local and national government. Whether that matters or not is yet to be seen, but it’s worth remembering that our Charter does include advocacy of F/OSS to government, commercial and industrial bodies, something which we’ve not really been addressing lately. This is perhaps a good starting point. Daniel

BUT a bt of research shows that intel have no plans to release a 2.6 kernel version of the linux driver for this 536ep modem .... Has anyone any suggestions on how to get 56k back thriftily (excluding going back to the 2.4 kernel Thanks Stephen

Craig, Fedora 2 is installed on my computer. Thanks to Mattheius. I have four C/D's, Two installed the o/s, the other two I have no clue what to do with. There may even be a media player on the discs My newbieness is the cause of most of my problems I think. I will try to set up the yum. I need to know how to open or, get to, /etc/yum.conf so that I can paste the infomation to it. My original plan was to download xine because the Australian Linux journal said it was an easy install and a good programme, then came all the dependancies and confusing stuff so I went for what I thought was an easier option, Hmmnn! > Since you want to use FreshRPMs, copy and paste the > following to your /etc/yum.conf (as root) > > [freshrpms] > name=FreshRPMs > baseurl=http://ayo.freshrpms.net/fedora/linux/$releasever/ > $basearch/freshrpm s/ > > http://ftp.us2.freshrpms.net/linux/freshrpms/ayo/fedora/linux/$releasever/$… > > Craig > > _______________________________________________ > wlug mailing list | wlug(a)list.waikato.ac.nz > Unsubscribe: > http://list.waikato.ac.nz/mailman/listinfo/wlug

Software Patents.
by Oliver Jones 10 Jun '04

10 Jun '04

With all the discussion on the web about all the bad law in the US it is often easy to miss bad law in your own country. What is the situation in NZ with regard to software patents? I know there is lots of discussion on various OSS/FS sites about the current wrangling in the EU over software patents. Do we have evil laws in NZ regarding this? If we do it would probably be a good idea to start making some noise about it. Unsubscribed posts

There have been a couple of people post to the list lately and have their messages silently dropped because they are posting from addresses that are not subscribed. This policy is in place because we get far more spam than we ever get misplaced messages. If you want to post from an address other than the one you receive mail to, you can subscribe to the list "nomail" so you have posting privileges from that address, but you don't receive two copies of the posts. It just so happens there have been two real posts today, and while technically they get deleted straight away, I do actually get notified first. ;) Roger Oed and "Daniel" from Brazil, please resend your messages to the list. Craig 1. In the ultimate irony, I sent this initially from my work email address, which is not subscribed, and it bounced straight back into the notifications box! 2. In the ultimate stupidity, I resent it to wlug-committee instead of wlug! How hard can this BE?

Running Lynx From Floppy
by Gabriel Bankier-Perry 31 May '04

31 May '04

I'm currently writing a rather extensive tutorial on how to install and configure Slackware 9.1 (http://gabes.orcon.net.nz/slackware_install.html) It's so extensive in fact that it would be stupid for someone to try and print it all out. Instead of getting them to print it out beforehand, I thought I could get them to save the page to a floppy and bring it up in Lynx before starting the installation ie. insert the install cd-rom, login as root, switch to a virtual console, mount the floppy disk, and read the webpage with lynx. That way they could keep switching back to the virtual console and reading the next step while setup was running. The problem was that lynx was not included as an executable on the disk (it was obviously avaliable as a package-yet-to-be-installed). I was now faced with the problem of not having access to a web browser with which to read the tutorial. The first thing I did was try and copy the lynx binary (/usr/bin/lynx) on my (already installed) system onto the same floppy disk as the saved webpage. When I tried to run it, it complained about a missing library (which is logical considering that I only copied the executable). My next thought was to get one of those Linux floppy-based Linux distributions (which usually has lynx). The problem is that I have no idea how I could load it (the floppy-based distro) once I had already booted the install cd. To reiterate, here's my problem: I need to run lynx from the slackware installation cd so I can read a file stored on a floppy disk. Lynx (as an exectutable) isn't found on the disk. How would I be able to run lynx from a floppy disk? Thanks. Note: The Slackware install disks work as live distro before you start the actual installation (ie. you can login and do partitioning, mounting, formatting etc.).

Spam: Law vs Technology
by Oliver Jones 31 May '04

31 May '04

Personally I think that spam will not go away with new laws. Certainly some laws could be enhanced to give them scope to cover spam type acts but ultimately the problem is with technology not law. Certain things should be made illegal. Ie, domain or email forging. If you don't have permission from the domain or email owner to use an email address the address owner should be able to sue/prosecute. However the problem really is technological. SMTP is too trusting. We need ways of verifying the authenticity of sender addresses and their sources. If methods like SPF were universally adopted and turned on by default much of the problem with spam would go away. People could still send spam. But they would have to do it via "legitimate" servers. Ie, ones they owned. It would then be a case of blocking those servers/networks that repeatedly offended. People will argue that they shouldn't need to block servers. People should just stop sending spam. This however is more problematic than you might think. The problem with spam is not that it is unsolicited or commercial or bulk but rather that it is unwanted. The problem however is that you don't know it is unwanted until you read it. For example, say someone was overtly generous and very rich (and perhaps slightly crazy). If they send 2 million email messages to randomly harvested addresses giving them information on how to get a $100 would this mail necessarily be unwanted by the recipients. In today's environment people would be highly suspicious of this email but for the sake of argument imagine that the offer was legit. Why should this behaviour be illegal? Similarly would it be illegal to send 2 million snail mail envelopes to randomly selected addresses with $100 stuffed into each? People would be falling over themselves to get on this mailing list. I believe all we need is good law regarding fraud, false advertising, pornography and commercial entity identification accompanied by good user driven technology that enables network administrators to lock the bad guys out. So, everyone should configure their mail server with SPF immediately! Legislation Against Spam
by Perry Lorier 27 May '04

27 May '04

The government is currently requesting information from "interested parties" about drafting legislation against spam, as can be found here: http://www.med.govt.nz/pbt/infotech/spam/ As the LUG is a concentration of technically minded users, it seems that we would be a good candidate to put forward some comments. The government have asked 22 specific questions which are documented at the URL above. I've created a wiki page for people to discuss their ideas with the hope that in about a months time (when the submissions are due) we can take the comments and merge them into some kind of prose to submit to the government. After reading the above document, go over to http://www.wlug.org.nz/LegislatingAgainstSpam and add your comments :)

Anyone got the Fedora Core 2 discs yet? All binary discs: 1,2,3,4 & Rescue. If so I'd dearly like a copy. I can supply replacement blanks or funds to cover effort. LDAP browsers
by Daniel Lawson 18 May '04

18 May '04

I just noticed Luma (http://luma.sourceforge.net/) linked off freshmeat. It's already up to v 1.20, so i'm not sure how I missed it this long. It's an LDAP browser / editor. Has anyone had experience using Luma? I've used GQ up till now, as I didn't know of any other decent generic LDAP browsers (ones like DirectoryAdministrator were very much targetted at a specific use and schema set). There's no ebuild for gentoo yet, so i'll have to compile from scratch. I'll have a look at it tonight. Daniel

nfsroot
by Jonathan Purvis 15 May '04

15 May '04

Hi, I have managed to get my iMac to netboot the Linux kernel. The kernel seems to load fine, but stops with a kernel panic as it can't mount the root filesystem. I'm using the default 2.4 kernel from Debian 3.0. As per the instructions for yaboot (the Open Firmware boot loader that LinuxPPC uses), i set "root=/dev/nfs". Is this what i'm supposed to do to get / mounted via NFS? Is this a sign the kernel doesn't have nfsroot support? I found a web page that suggested i add "fsroot=$SERVER:/export/root", but that didn't help. Does anyone have any ideas? Thanks, Jon

compiling 2.6.5 kernel from rh9 .. a better distro?
by Stephen Pearce 11 May '04

11 May '04

Recently downloaded the 2.6.5 kernel from kernel.org as a tgz source file .. and tried to install on rh9 .. but the new installation fails at boot. I am now thinking of converting to an alternative distro that will allow this easily .. I understand rh has a whole lot of distro specfic stuff which has to be organised .. Could someone advise me on either how to get it going using rh9 .. or which alternate distro would be best ..rh is the one I'm familiar with. Also ..can you install a new distro without a reformat of the disk .. to preserve all my personal files? Lastly, can anyone provide me with a copy of such a distro .. I can pay postage and media cost. Thanks Stephen Pearce

[gun(a)LinuxBox home]$ ls -ld drwxr-xr-x 5 root root 4096 May 12 08:55 . As you can see with the home directory, The owner of the directory has read/write/execute access. The group of the directory has read/execute access (No write access). Everyone else has read/execute access (No write access). Incidentally, root has full control of adelle, and if adelle is a user, tough, adelle ony is seen as Joe Public and has read execute access. For security reasons, I would leave it as is (and login as root to create subdirectories - this sort of thing should be automated when a new user is created - each user should have their own directory to do whatever and that should pertain to that user) but if you feel another way inclined want to have full control as a user, then chown gun home chgrp gun home Or else if you want want everyone to have rw access the chmod 777 home I hope this helps. > -----Original Message----- > From: Gun Caundle [mailto:gun(a)paradise.net.nz] > Sent: Wednesday, 12 May 2004 09:36 > To: wlug(a)list.waikato.ac.nz > Subject: [wlug] creating directories > > > I am trying to create a directory in my 'home' directory > with my user > login. Xandros 2.0
by Nigel Nguyen 11 May '04

11 May '04

Hi, I have tried xandros for a couple weeks, it nice and easy to install/use. Well, just feel like Andreas, same Yoper but Canadian(i believed they from Canada, Andreas :) ) It recommended for newbies and windows mover as they X/team has tweaked some features to get their own filemanager and the software depository (called XandrosNetwork). Installed stuff outside that is just normal as install on other debian based distro or just configure/make/make install. Overall, easy to use but less "fun" of course. IMO, if yoper has the GUI installation (i havn't tried the 2.0 yet) than Yoper is a clear winner as newbies always scare of text thing thou :) Just a few comments, Nigel Ng. P.S: Do anyone know if Yoper has new zealand mirror for downloading ?

Performance bottle neck?
by Raymond Burgess 11 May '04

11 May '04

I am currently importing a lot of data into a Postgres Database. Initially things where quickish, but now it seems to be running very slowly. I put this down to index scans. The machine is a Dual P4 with 2 GB of ram and a Raid array (14 Fibre Channel Harddrives) Top is reporting the disk cache is 1.7 GB and system idle around 70%. The postgres backend is using 10% to 20% of one CPU. I don't know if the bottleneck is the Disk IO or Ram. What would people suggest I can look at to see what is holding up the process?

Installfest aftermath
by Daniel Lawson 10 May '04

10 May '04

We've just finished tidying up after the installfest. I think we had about 30 registrants, but I'm sure more than that came throughout the day. I'm pretty sure we got linux onto a few peoples computers, and we solved a good number of problems. Let's hope we didn't create more than we solved :). Out of interest, I checked the usage graphs for the Internet link, and we peaked at 170 KB/sec at one point during the day. Next time I'd like to enforce use of a proxy server, as I'm sure most of that traffic was duplicated a few times. While I remember, I'd like to fire off a few points: * I think it was a great success. We had many new people turn up - some from as far away as Waihi at least - and it was a really great atmosphere. * Thanks to everyone who helped. The entire committee, Bruce, Alastair, Matthias, Lindsay, Alan, Shay, Shane and all the rest who helped people out during the day. Big ups :). * Thanks to Lindsay / University of Waikato ITS for supplying the Cisco Catalyst 5000 and 2926 switches. * Thanks to Phil / Open 2 View for providing the server. Thanks Carich for going into receivership and allowing Open 2 View to buy lots of your old computing equipment . * Thanks to Crawshaw School for the use of the Hall and facilities, and the use of the Internet connection. Thanks also to Satlan, Crawshaw's Internet provider. * Thanks to DSE for giving us some Mandrake 9.2 cds. We still have a handful of these left, so if anyone would like a copy of this, yell out, you can pick it up at the next meeting. * Thanks to IT Partners for providing "CD Duplication Facilities". And thanks again to everyone who turned up. We've learned a bit about running these, so hopefully next time things will run a bit smoother - we should have enough tables at least! Daniel

09 May '04

Hi there, Thanks to everyone who came to the installfest today, and a special thanks to all those who helped out; especially Matt for all the organizing, Daniel for the venue and Bruce for rousing all the attendants! We had a lot of people signing up as a token of their gratitude - thank you very much; those of you who didn't pay today will want to check https://secure.wlug.org.nz/join.html to figure out what to do next. Just a note to a gentleman named David, who gave us Mandrake 10 - you paid and filled out a membership form, which I think you took with you. Can you contact me off list, if you're out there, or if anyone knows David can they please ask him to get in touch. I'm sure you'll hear more from others about this event soon. If you came, and have any questions or comments, please feel free to post them to this list. Regards, Craig

Installfest is this weekend
by Daniel Lawson 06 May '04

06 May '04

As you are all probably aware, the WLUG Installfest is happening this weekend, Saturday 8 May, at Crawshaw Primary School. Directions and information can be obtained from the WLUG Wiki, at http://www.wlug.org.nz/InstallFest. If you are planning on coming, please please please register your interest. We'd like to have a rough idea of how many tables to put out, how many meters of power and network cabling we need, and how many sachets of Raro to buy. This also applies if you have talked to people and they are keen on coming - get them to register as well, or register a separate time for their entry. Thanks a lot, we hope to see a lot of you on Saturday. Daniel

Network profiles in Mandrake
by Glenn Ramsey 05 May '04

05 May '04

Anyone know how to get network profiles working in Mandrake? The whole system seems to be badly broken, but then again I may have set it up wrong. What I want is to set up a home profile and a University profile on my laptop. Home needs a static ip and University needs dhcp. Actually home could use dhcp too but then if I boot when not connected to a network it takes forever to time out looking for the dhcp server. I have tried to set this up using netdrake (or whatever it's called) but the ip address settings ie static/dhcp etc seem to be independent of the profile, so there isn't really any point to using it. Any suggestions? g -- Glenn Ramsey <glenn(a)componic.co.nz> 07 8627077 http://www.componic.co.nz

'Automatic' kernel patching
by Daniel Lawson 03 May '04

03 May '04

Just saw an article about automatic kernel patching linked off rootprompt.org Ketchup is a script that intelligently downloads the right files for a kernel. EG, if you want to grab the latest kernel source, and you have nothing, it'll just grab the source. If you already have an earlier version, it'll grab the right patches to bring that version up to speed. It also understands a range of patchsets, such as the -pre or -rc kernels, and some of the extra patchsets such as the -mm, -tiny and -mjb patchsets. http://kerneltrap.org/node/view/2976 http://www.selenic.com/ketchup/

Mysql support in apache /php
by Stephen Pearce 03 May '04

03 May '04

Hi Any experts on this out there? I have set up a mysql database running on a server. The database is loadable and can be interacted with via mysql client using a telnet session. A basic php script running on the httpd server <?php phpinfo() ?> returns a result suggesting mysql is supported ..under the dbx subheading of the return .. but if I run the "mysql_connect" command the web page shows a error saying that this function (mysql_connect()) is not supported .. I cannot work out why not. Secondly I would ideally have liked to create the database as non root .. but seem to only be allowed to do it as root. Other users can readily access it. The os is rh9. Oddly, setting this up locally on my laptop there is no problem in running mysql_connect despite the installation being essentially identical (although I did use mysql rpm binaries to set up mysql). Any thought appreciated Stephen :>)

Programming Courses ?
by Gavin Denby 29 Apr '04

29 Apr '04

Having lasted 25 years as an electronic Tech, I am needing to expand to cope with the continued blurring of the line between when the electronics start and the Programming of PC's takes over. I already write assembler for microcontrollers (programming from 2K to 2 meg in assembler) and really should be using c for this, but have never took the time to learn it.I have however programed in both Portran (port-a Punch) and basic many years ago. Ancient history lesson ends I basically need to program PC's to set up/ colect data/ process data and probably via a graphical interface. so my question ... in 2 parts: 1. Is C still a viable language to learn to write programs for PC/MAC Ideally in Win MacOSX (cocoa looks nice) and Linux or should I be looking at C# / Mono / QT / ?? It seems that all later programming languages seem to be adding to C (extend .. embrace ??) so Would C be a good start place ? All opinions welcome.... and crystal ball gazing will be entertained. 2. Does anyone have experience with a good course / course provider that they would recommend to provide such training. I would prefer part time training, as my family like to eat, but this is flexible, as I can work nights/weekend is the course is not too long. Of course, then I could apply for the job that just hit my inbox too :-) Thanks in advance.

iptables question
by DrWho? 27 Apr '04

27 Apr '04

This has more then likely been asked by a million people with a million different answers but here goes. I was wondering if it is possible for iptables to filter by a domain name? I would like to restrict port 80 connects to .nz domains only and all others are stealthed. The solution does not need to be very fast, handle more then one high level domain or any other ports and is not for commercial usage. Any solutions?

Of course they are, which means getting a /24 block might be a bit easier, and that they stand a chance for a /16 block. > -----Original Message----- > From: Drew Broadley [mailto:drew(a)corrupt.co.nz] > Sent: Tuesday, 27 April 2004 11:44 > To: 'Waikato Linux Users Group' > Subject: RE: [wlug] iptables question > > > > I don't think APNIC even see Telecom as a big enough player > to assign > a > > full /8 block. > > Last I saw they were a medium membership holder. > > Surely they would "care" about that sized customer ? > > - Drew > > _______________________________________________ > wlug mailing list | wlug(a)list.waikato.ac.nz > Unsubscribe: http://list.waikato.ac.nz/mailman/listinfo/wlug > >

What ? All of it ? But someone mentioned that there are bits of it over in Japan. Someone else mentioned that it was all over the show. That would have been a more recent assignment, I don't think APNIC even see Telecom as a big enough player to assign a full /8 block. Anyway, not my problem... > -----Original Message----- > From: Drew Broadley [mailto:drew(a)corrupt.co.nz] > Sent: Tuesday, 27 April 2004 11:13 > To: 'Waikato Linux Users Group' > Subject: RE: [wlug] iptables question > > > > Dunno... Yeah, so if you decided to go down the path that Bruce suggested which was to allow only source addresses from within New Zealand networks to do normal port 80 web traffic, then the first place I would look is the BGP prefix lists on the New Zealand's primary peering point, and worry about the rest later if that becomes a problem. As I said, this is a good start... > -----Original Message----- > From: Richard Stevenson [mailto:richard(a)endace.com] > Sent: Tuesday, 27 April 2004 10:09 > To: Waikato Linux Users Group > Subject: RE: [wlug] iptables question > > > On Tue, 27 Apr 2004, Lindsay Druett wrote: > > > Dunno... food for installfest thought
by Gavin Denby 26 Apr '04

26 Apr '04

Ok its really nothing to do with the installfest, But here is an interesting article comparing a mandrake and win2k install on a system. All the rules and issues are there, but its a fair view on the install processes of 2 OS's Its a fun read, we all know it of course, but for those that are not forced to do Windows installs, it exposes some of the problems with installing Windows onto a machine. If you have time its worth looking at . Have a nice day. (and no I don't use either of these versions, so I can't discuss the findings.)

Firewall script problem
by Gun Caundle 25 Apr '04

25 Apr '04

I am a newbie trying to create a firewall on RH9. I am using a script from the RH9 bible (p507). I am running a section at a time. What I have so far: # (1) Policies (default) iptables _P INPUT DROP iptables -P OUTPUT DROP iptables -P FORWARD DROP # (2) user-defined chain for ACCEPTED TCP packets iptables -N okay iptables -A okay -p TCP --syn -j ACCEPT iptables -A okay -p TCP -m state ESTABLISHED,RELATED -j ACCEPT iptables -A okay -p TCP -j DROP This line is giving me some grief: 'iptables -A okay -p TCP -m state ESTABLISHED,RELATED -j ACCEPT' Because I get this error when I run it. 'firescript: line 23: ESTABLISHED,RELATED: command not found' The author says this line "allows through packets associated with an ESTABLISHED connection (one that has already had traffic pass through the interface) or a RELATED connection (one that is starting a new connection related to an already-established connection) Are there other commands I could use or another line of script that would do the same job? Any help would be appreciated. Gun Caundle

Fw: [wlug] Firewall script problem
by Craig Box 24 Apr '04

24 Apr '04

(Forwarded from Mark Grimshaw) Hi Gun, It may be something as simple as the 'ACCEPT' being on a different line to the main body of the command and therefore being treated as a command itself which will obviously lead to an error (although that could be word wrap in email clients). Try putting it on the same line. Mark G. On 24 Apr 2004 at 9:21, Gun Caundle wrote: > I am a newbie trying to create a firewall on RH9. I am using a script > from the RH9 bible (p507). [Administrivia] WLUG Committee Mailing List
by daniel＠meta.net.nz 24 Apr '04

24 Apr '04

One of the points of order raised at the last WLUG Committee meeting regarded the wlug-committee mailing list. For those of you who aren't aware of the current situation, the wlug-committee mailing list is a moderated mailing list available for the commitee members to discuss committee business. As such, only committee members can post. However, in the interests of open policy, and not least because we are a group concerned with open standards and discussions, the wlug-committee mailing list available for read-only access for general paid-up LUG members. However, it is important that anyone who wishes to read the wlug-committee mailing list understands a few points: * You are allowed to read the list, but you are not given write access. This is primarily because you have elected the committee to act on your behalf, and it is up to the committee to make the decisions. If you feel strongly about something you may forward your point to any committee member, who may act upon it. This does not mean they will raise your point immediately, nor does it mean they will forward your email direct to the wlug-committee list. * The list is there for the purpose of committee discussions. As such, the committee needs to be able to have candid discussions. * Once a final decision is made, the committee may inform the rest of the LUG if appropriate. However, until the committee has committed to a decision, you have no permission to act upon it. * If the committee wishes to ask for general input on a point, then it is up to the committee to do so. We have decided to keep the wlug-committee mailing list the way it is for now, despite some recent events which have lead, it seems, a great deal of confusion in external groups to the LUG. Had the above guidelines been understood beforehand, this would not have happened. It is important to us that if you choose to read the wlug-committee mailing list, you adhere to the above guidelines. We don't want to have to close the list to non-committee members completely. mail clients and archiving
by Glenn Ramsey 22 Apr '04

22 Apr '04

Hi, Does anyone know if any of the popular/stable mail clients have an archiving feature? If not then what is a good way to archive mail? Ideally I'd like something where I can say "archive all mail older than X" or something like that. I am using maildir so I guess I could just use shell commands to find all the old files but a method where I don't have to think too hard or read a zillion different man pages would be better ;-). g -- Glenn Ramsey <glenn(a)componic.co.nz> 07 8627077 http://www.componic.co.nz

InstallFest Progress
by Matt Brown 22 Apr '04

22 Apr '04

Hi, I wanted to keep everybody up to date on how progress with planning for the InstallFest is going. Keep an eye on www.wlug.org.nz/InstallFest for the latest details. We have confirmed the date (8 May) and venue Crawshaw School. The InstallFest will run from 11am to 4pm. Advertising is well underway but the most effective form of advertising we can get is word of mouth, tell all your friends and then bring them along on the day. Please register first so we know how many people are likely to be there! While we are calling the event an InstallFest we really want it to be much more than that, we want it to be a social event for the lug, even if you already have linux installed and do not plan to install anything on the day feel free to come along. You don't even need to be a paid member of WLUG to participate. What happens on the day will really be determined by who is there, obviously our first priority will be installing Linux for new people who attend, but if time allows and there are interested people there it is feasible that we could also have some other activities based around various applications etc. I've got no idea what form that sort of thing would take, if we would have time, or if people are interested in that sort of thing. The InstallFest is not just for new linux users (although that is the primary focus). One idea that I think would be quite cool if time permitted would be to have a bug finding / squashing or documentation party where pick a peice of software and as a group work towards making this better. The benefit of this is that there are lots of different tasks that can be done, if you're not a programmer you can test and look for bugs, if you are a programmer you can hack around in the code etc. Anyway, I'm starting to ramble and I'm really just throwing out ideas rather than describing existing plans - the point is we want everyone who is involved in the LUG to come and be at the InstallFest, given enough people we could easily have a group doing new installs while other people are doing something else. So consider this a challenge, we've never done an InstallFest before, it's new and interesting, get in and support your LUG by being involved! -- Matt Brown Email: matt(a)mattb.net.nz GSM : 021 611 544

how to find files with multiple suffixes
by Glenn Ramsey 20 Apr '04

20 Apr '04

How do I find files having either of several extensions? Eg this finds all .c and .h files $find . -name '*.[ch]' but what if I want to find all .cpp and .h files? I guess I need a grouping operator in the pattern but I can't figure out what it is. I've looked in the man page and Google and tried a few things, also tried the -regex switch instead of -name but couldn't get it to work. Eg this doesn't find anything $find . -regex '.*\.(cpp|h)' I suspect the answer is really simple. Any ideas what I'm doing wrong? g -- Glenn Ramsey <glenn(a)componic.co.nz> 07 8627077 http://www.componic.co.nz

Kiwi VOIP interconnect
by Simon Anderson 20 Apr '04

20 Apr '04

G'day, I read in your Wiki some details on Asterisk, notably from Nathan Ward and Matt Riddell, but my quick search of the last two years' postings to this list didn't turn anything else up, so forgive me if this message is coming to the wrong place. Matt R and I are already in touch with one another, working on an Asterisk<->Asterisk interconnect arrangement. Matt is in Dunedin and I'm in Wellington. I wonder if there is there an Asterisk operator (or a prospective operator) in the Waikato who would like to interconnect? In the spirit of quid pro quo, I will terminate calls in the Wellington free calling area in exchange for my calls being terminated in the Waikato, with a view to setting up a peering arrangement between all willing Asterisk operators in this country as and when the opportunity arises, down the line. Note that I am not proposing a commercial venture of any sort - I'm an enthusiast looking for other enthusiasts who enjoy messing with this technology and might be interested in providing a small scale solution to others out of a sense of altruism. Talk to me about it or request an account here; iax2://guest(a)gateway.anderson.gen.nz Regards, Simon

FFS Man !!! Which part don't you understand about WLUG not wanting to use Ghost or Partition Magic ? Licensing costs and issues are not the only reason behind this... I personally wouldn't paint myself into a corner backing up peoples computers, there are a lot of issues, what if the back up failed ? What is the content I'm backing up ? What about disposing of the data once finished ? Believe it or not, there are a lot of legal issues there... The other issues (which I thought was very obvious) is that here we are promoting a suite of software ranging from the OS right up to end user applications that is for starters free, open source, an alternative to Microsoft, and we are going to use what? to partition hard drive space, and we are going to use what? to backup the data. Hey if you want to use at home (or whatever) is fine to me, but what you are suggesting here is as appropriate as suggesting that you consume alcohol at church... Personally, Hard Drives are not expensive, people should consider installing a new hard drive in their machine and install the going distro. If they are newbies, things *will* go wrong somewhere along the line, and at least they can reformat the drive and start all over again without losing any sleep. > -----Original Message----- > From: DrWho? [installfest] Hard Disk Repartitioning
by Matt Brown 18 Apr '04

18 Apr '04

In light of the recent frenzy of discussion regarding hard disk partitioning and the InstallFest I would like to clarify what the official position of the WLUG Committee on this issue is. WLUG (and it's representatives) will not be responsible for repartitioning or backing up hard disks at the InstallFest. All data backup and disk preparation tasks (such as ensuring there is sufficient unpartitioned space) are the responsibility of the owner of the computer and should be completed before attending the InstallFest. The minimum requirements that we have specified for hard disks for the install fest are either a) You are willing to wipe the entire disk (which is at least 5GB in size) and have Linux installed. OR b) There is at least 5GB of UNPARTITIONED space available on the disk. The rationale behind this position can be found on the InstallFest wiki page at http://www.wlug.org.nz/InstallFest along with other information related to hardware requirements. If people have further general comments on Free hard disk partitioning tools that are available for use in Linux then you are most welcome to post them to the list, however I would suggest that any disk partitioning issues related solely to the InstallFest have already been well and truly flogged and any more discussion would be counter productive. Questions or concerns about any aspect of the position stated above can be directed to myself or any other member of the committee. Regards -- Matt Brown Email: matt(a)mattb.net.nz GSM : 021 611 544

>Also, to Wayne, who decided that because a process "works for him" it's >infallible, and 100% safe for all, I've seen plenty of PM partitioning >problems in my time, and it's the benchmark. I didn't say it was infallible. I said it was designed to fail safe. qtparted resizes NTFS partitions with ntfsresize. Part of "man ntfsresize" says: KNOWN ISSUES No reliability problems are known or has been reported. If you need help please try the ntfsresize FAQ first (see below) and if you dont find your answer then send your question, comment or bug report to <linux-ntfs-dev(a)lists.sourceforge.net>. No subscription is needed but the mailing list is moderated and it can take some time to approve your post. There are some very rarely met limitations at present: filesystems having bad sectors, highly fragmented Master File Table (MFT), relocation of the first MFT extent and resizing in the middle of some metadata in some cases arent supported yet. These cases are detected and resizing is refused, restricted to a safe size or the closest safe size is displayed. --------- I like the words "no reliability problems are known" The fact that you've seen problems with OTHER software doesn't mean that THIS software is no good, does it? If you've had problems with qtparted then do share them so we know what to look out for. >So forgive me if I don't >really want to see the WLUG put its balls on the block guaranteeing the >safety of the user's data. That's why you get them to sign a waiver. Why would you want to guarantee somebodys data? That's asking for trouble. An installfest should be all care and no responsibility. Issues with BIND
by Craig Box 15 Apr '04

15 Apr '04

(Passing on the message from Drew. Note to everyone, messages you send from unsubscribed addresses get dropped! -- Craig) I am having issues with a SINGLE domain "corrupt.co.nz", every other domain is fine! Here's the deal: Bind logs return nothing like they usually would saying there was an error with the domain. I can dig to ALL of my AUTH NS servers, and get the records returned no problemo. I can use XTRA, DTS (and a few others have used their own DNS servers) and get returned results without any SERVFAIL errors. I try to dig anything to the PARADISE NS servers (203.96.152{4,12}) and I get mixed results. I get www.corrupt.co.nz and corrupt.co.nz, but none of my overly important records (home.corrupt.co.nz, mail.corrupt.co.nz) It returns SERVFAIL id:2 whenever I try to request anything other then www.corrupt.co.nz / corrupt.co.nz via PARADISES NS Servers Any ideas? I have contacted soa(a)paradise.net.nz but god knows how long that will take to be processed. - Drew

> Strip back the FUD; apply the standard "there are security holes in Linux applications > fixed all the time, but Gartner Group rarely complains about them, and if they do, it > gets written off as anti-MS propaganda"... One interesting point I think people offten tend to miss when the Gartner Group or other such company is counting bugs/security warnings/year in linux versus windows codebases is that for linux they never differentiate between the O/S itself and the apps that are included with the distros. They like to lump them all in together to get the most number of bugs possible. My suspicion is, if they only looked at the O/S itself they would have a much harder time finding problems. Cheers... david

>Resizing is a very risky option; the very LAST thing we want is people >who say "I tried to install Linux once, and lost all my data because if >it.". Especially if we were helping them at the time. No, no, no. Resizing is very easy and safe. Boot computer off Knoppix cd. Open an x-term. Type "sudo su <enter>" Type "qtparted <enter>" Click on the edge of the partition you want to resize and drag it to the new size you want. Click "ok" And you're done. And it handles NTFS partitions. And it fails safe, that is, if something is going to go wrong (which it never has for me) it throws up an error message and quits BEFORE making changes to the hard drive. Try it. You'll like it. New Users Redux
by Craig Box 14 Apr '04

14 Apr '04

Over the last couple of days, due to some comments regarding the upcoming WLUG installfest [1] and "Software Freedom Day" [2], the issue of WLUG and new Linux users has come up again. While I realise that everything I'm going to say has been said before, hopefully any discussion that comes from this will explain a bit better about how some people feel, or get people inspired to do something about it. A lot of the people involved with the LUG are computing professionals, or higher level University students in computing science. It has been said that these people aren't new users, they don't have to do new things again and to keep them interested, we can't offer installation meetings every other month. It's not to say that these people don't want to help new people - lots of them, myself included, reply to posts here, sit in #wlug on IRC offering help. Yet people still don't think there's enough being done. There's a faction of Linux users that like Linux because they hate Microsoft. (Tip: if you use "M$", you're it!) Most of the aforementioned "clever" group, while they might prefer Linux for various reasons (open standards, open source, etc), don't hate Windows. There is a time and a place for everything. Pushing Linux before its time will just cause people to be aggrevated. As an example, if someone suggests running Linux to a home user, they will inevitably field a whole heap of the same questions over again; word documents, Flash. Questions that there exist easy answers for if people are prepared to look. (As an aside, people who deal with users every day who aren't prepared to learn for themselves, get a bit annoyed with that class of people!) Now, if you leave Linux to the people who find out about it themselves (or push it in a non-confrontational way; say "Linux exists, learn about if you want", and then help people when they have specific problems along the way, I think you end up with less problems. This is the approach that several people are espousing at the moment. Let people find Linux on their own merits - we don't have to replace every Windows machine in the world, and we certainly don't have to do it overnight. Then, if they have problems, we'll help them. That way we're sure that they are prepared to learn for themselves. No-one is paid to be involved with the LUG and some people put a lot of time in, only to be discouraged by the attitude of people who complain to other people, but not the LUG itself (so we have no idea how to change). We would love to see more new user based presentations. The general feeling that the people who have recently been new users should be presenting them. It's not tricky, and if you're worried about fielding questions you don't know the answers to, rest assured there will be someone in the audience who can help, or point to the wrong things. We don't want to alienate the people who have done this all before, because then at the current rate there will be no presentations at all. Not everyone in the LUG is interested in holding an "installfest", for the reasons above - Linux is not ready for everyone and we don't want to have to field questions from people who aren't ready to ask them yet. The people that are interested in helping, are. If you're interested, please shout out. Welly InstallFest a go go!
by Jamie Baddeley 13 Apr '04

13 Apr '04

Fellow NZ_Luggites, Wellylug (http://www.wellylug.org.nz) is pleased to announce we are undergoing the annual ritual of the InstallFest. This year we have chosen MayDay (1st May) as the day that people can make the choice to add some freedom into their computing. We think MayDay is the ideal time to rescue your computer. Basically this email is to spread the good word. Anyone who needs a penguin injection is welcome to join us at Silicon Systems on the 1st. We're always keen for good volunteers, and I'm sure that the Aucklanders amongst us need a reasonable excuse to get out of the traffic jam ;-) Anyways - spread the word, and keep the heat turned up. Not long to go until we form the Jedi Council ;-) peace. Jamie, on behalf of the WellyLug crew.

I got the damn thing working under win 95 for internet stuff .. then he went and bought a usb printer for which there was no win95 driver Right I thought .. linux is the thing ...and installed rh9.0 .. wiping out the win 95 partition... well it seems to take all day to try loading open office (64 M of memory) ..to the point of being useless So I fell back to win 98 .. and have spent most of today trying to get this installed .. but the graphics drivers don't work .. the modem isn't properly recognised etc etc!!!! :<((((( Has anyone experience of linux on one of these brutes .. it has to read ms word docs ... do a bit of graphing for illustrations and work on the internet ... Thanks Stephen

Microsoft still offer paid support for NT. Must of the current NT installs I have seen are acting as NAS, DNS and in a few file / print servers. It is installed on Compaq or HP server platforms. If anyone has any useful or interesting GNOME 'hacks', please pass them on. If you do email Marsee directly, make sure you mention you're a WLUG member (probably best to spell that out, there's several WLUG's in the world)... Or email a committee member and we'll submit on your behalf. Feel free to discuss this on the mailing list if you want to bounce ideas around. -------- Original Message -------- Subject: [wlug-committee] O'Reilly Looking for GNOME Hacks Date: Wed, 07 Apr 2004 14:47:14 -0700 From: Marsee Henon <marsee(a)oreilly.com> Reply-To: WLUG Committee Mailing List <wlug-committee(a)list.waikato.ac.nz> To: wlug-committee(a)list.waikato.ac.nz Hi Linux UG Leader, We're looking for GNOME hacks for our upcoming book, "Linux Desktop Hacks." We already have half of the book filled with KDE hacks, but no GNOME hacks! Do you know of any GNOME Hackers who could help us out? Please forward this email along. If you have a hack to share, please send 'em our way by having your members email me (marsee(a)oreilly.com) with "GNOME hacks" in the subject line. Don't let KDE hacks take over this book! As thanks for sharing, we'll make sure to get copies of "Linux Desktop Hacks" sent to your group shortly after publication. --Marsee _______________________________________________ wlug-committee mailing list wlug-committee(a)list.waikato.ac.nz http://list.waikato.ac.nz/mailman/listinfo/wlug-committee

I agree with Craig that perhaps you should start getting used to the fact that they are "Microsoft". Also, Microsoft haven't supported NT3.51 for quite a while, they basically have stopped supporting NT 4.0 December last year, and they are about to stop providing security patches very shortly AFAIK. > > >People buy new PC's because they want something which their > old PC didn't give > >them - the ability to do some new task (like play games, or > support larger > >hard > >drives/more drives/more ram, etc), or some existing task > faster than what they > >had. An $ 8,000 server 3-4 years ago would have at least been a 800-1000 MHz PIII, possibly a Dual processor machine, depending on buying power. In the enterprise world, that is not a big deal at all, the ROI would have been well within 3 years. Normally, servers come with a 3 year warranty/service contract and in the enterprise environment in many instances the cost of having the server down for any length of time can outweigh the cost of the server itself, hence High Availability and Redundancy is a very important consideration. If the machine is out of warranty and/or is not on service contract, then in a lot of incidences, it shouldn't be in production. In other environments where things are not so crucial, I would expect a life of 5-7 years for a server. Quite often in the enterprise environment, 3-4 year old servers are used in test environments where if the server bellies up and/or spits out a hard drive, then so what ? So you'll be pleased to know that 3-4 year servers don't go straight in the bin.

They both have several australian mirrors however. On the other hand if you come past G1.02 tommorrow I can give you a copy of two of WLUG Knoppix which we created for the recent Introduction to Linux tutorials. It is basically Knoppix 3.3 with some very minor cosmetic changes. Releases and thigns
by Craig Box 01 Apr '04

01 Apr '04

Fedora Core 2 test 2 has been released; if you're interested in a copy a couple of local people have it. Post to the list, perhaps (I haven't got my copy just yet, so don't ask me direct). Warning, it's for testing, it breaks things [1] It's not for general home users. GNOME 2.6 has been released today; check out the release notes at http://www.gnome.org/start/2.6/notes/ or some screenshots at http://fgo-temp.acc.umu.se/pub/GNOME/teams/marketing/en/2004/two-six-screens hots/html/ FC2 will have Gnome 2.6, but seeing as it came out a couple of days ago, it's only running 2.5rc. Fedora Core 2 comes with SELinux installed and enabled by default. SELinux is the NSA's patches for the Linux kernel to provide Mandatory Access Control - a way to, for example, lock your web server so it can't run anything outside of the commands apache uses and requires. There's a FAQ on it at http://www.crypt.gen.nz/selinux/faq.html, or a good general introduction can be found at http://sourceforge.net/docman/display_doc.php?docid=20372&group_id=21266. Craig [1] If you don't set SELinux up right, and FC2t2 is a test release, things don't run. You might not want it!

You may not need another book. Sams Teach Yourself Perl in 24 hours Clinton Pierce (2nd Ed, 2002) - This gives a simple first look at Perl. You may not want another book ;-) Am happy to bring them to the next wlug meeting. -Sid. P.S. Are user contributions useful and encouraged or are publishers our main source.

Thank you for all the advise. Yes, you are correct about the ICU abbreviation ... there is some open source medical software, but it doesn't fit our requirements here. I will peruse some of the links you gave me and then get back to some of you. I have previously installed apache on another system, but then got lost setting up the local pages .. I thought I would do a staged implementation .. getting apache going then maybe pHp .. about which I know little .. and the MySQL .................. As a first q Can someone tell me where to put index.html once apche is installed .. so that it pops up when a remote system probes? ................... Upgrading from RH9 to Fedora Core 1.
by Oliver Jones 22 Mar '04

22 Mar '04

I decided to upgrade from RH9 to FC1 on the weekend. Below is my experience which I thought I might share with the rest of the LUG. My system was quite heavily modified with Ximian and FreshRPMs packages for RH9. So I figured I couldn't just do a from CD "upgrade" install. The first thing I did was install yum a package manager similar to apt but for RPMs. Yum comes with FC1. I could have also installed apt for RPM too. But I was more familiar with yum. I then copied all the RPMs off the FC1 CDs I have onto my hard disk. I then downloaded the "headers" directory from the fedora core ftp server. Yum uses .hdr files to resolve dependencies. It uses headers rather than downloading the rpms because this is much more network efficient. I then configured yum to use file:/// urls to get the files off my hard disk. I then started going over my installed RPMs finding Ximain and FreshRPM versions and replacing them where Icould with FC1 versions using yum. This was an easy process of erasing the installed versions and then issuing "yum install package-name". Once I had eradicated these troublesome packages I replaced the firstboot, redhat-config-securitylevel, and lokkit packages as I read on the web they can cause install issues. Then I started manually replacing 'core' packages like glibc, basesystem, redora-release, rpm, popt etc etc. I should have also replaced libzlib, libbzip2 and others.... I learned that lesson later. :) Then issued a "yum update". This started inspecting all my packages and upgrading them. About half way though the update I had a thought, started doubting the command I had entered was doing the right thing and decided I'd stop yum with Ctrl-C, check the command and start yum again. BAD IDEA!!!! This had the effect of A) breaking yum so I couldn't use it anymore due to python errors and B) of completely hosing my RPM database. My system thought that it had installed multiple version of most of my packages. I spent the next 6 hours rebuilding my system with rpm manually. This consisted of producing a list of all installed RPMS (including dupes) and running rpm --force -Uvh on all these packages and resolving dependencies by hand. This was a painful exercise. Once that was done I did a further rpm -Fvh *.rpm in the fedora core RPMS directory. By this time yum was back to working. I then reconfigured it to use some Fedora mirrors. I also configured it to use the Fedora.us and Livna.org yum repositories. Fedora.us and livna.org have lots of extra goodies to install. I issued a "yum update" and yum began to sync up my box with all the latest package updates and also a swag of replacements for FreshRPM RPMS I had installed. My system is now in relatively good working order. But it certainly was a mission to get it there. Everything would have been soooo much easier had I resisted the temptation to Ctrl-C yum when it was working on my system in the first place. Voice over IP WLUG meeting & plans for the installation demo meeting after
by Craig Box 11 Mar '04

11 Mar '04

Just another note to say thanks to Nathan Ward for coming down from Auckland on Monday and presenting a meeting on Voice over IP. Nathan covered VoIP from several angles; protocols, software (client and server), and usage, both from an end-to-end perspective and as part of a toll bypass system (where you call from a normal telephone to another one, and get your call shunted onto an IP network along the way.) Thanks also to Gerwin and Computer Upgrades 2000 for providing an excellent venue. Over the next month we will be presenting tutorials to second year University students who will be using Linux as part of their course. The next month's meeting is going to be an introduction meeting for people who want to install Linux, so keep the date free (Monday 22 March) - the meeting will almost certainly be on the University campus but an exact location will be announced soon. We want to try and attract everyone that has felt that meetings have been a bit over their heads, people who have lurked on the list or on the Wiki and want to install Linux for the first time, want a run down on the various distros, pros and cons etc. If there are new users floating around on the list, please let us know what you'd like to see at this meeting - it's for you. The current plan is to run a Linux install live on a projector while the presentation runs so that everyone can see exactly how easy it is. Craig

I hate to flog the dead horse, but if you make it more attractive for them to use they will be better off then just a "you need to do it" situation. If they get a feeling for what they would normally do in a familiar environment it will be a win win at the end of the day. After all, no one likes too leave their comfort zone, and if they must it would be better for them to do so in a manor that would be easy for them to understand, and if that means exposing them too the side of linux that is not part of the course needs, will it really hurt? One problem I encounter with linux is the "server" impression of linux. Not many people really seem to be aware that linux can be a desktop platform, and as a result fun to use. If you can impose this on the students it would be a good start, in my opinion. Also if the students are using it at home then it will be better for them in a work situation as well. >On the other hand, we have talked about the March WLUG presentation being >an intoductory presentation, perhaps going through installing a distro, >setting it up and showing off solutions to the common issues you have >discussed. lsmod command

Hi I am a newbie using RH 9 and working with the Red Hat Linux Bible by Christopher Negus. He uses a command 'lsmod' which I think is for listing modules. However my version of RH9 doesn't appear to have this command. IE > [root(a)LinuxBox /]# type lsmod > bash: type: lsmod: not found > . Is there another command I could use instead? Hi, O'Reilly (the book publisher) has generously offered to send us some free technical manuals, although I think they are supposed to be for review purposes. If you are a paid up member of WLUG, and would like to see us acquire a book of your choosing (and you are prepared to write up a small review of it), visit http://www.wlug.org.nz/WantedBooks and edit the page. Introduction to Linux Seminars
by Matt Brown 16 Feb '04

16 Feb '04

Hi, In conjunction with the CS Department at Waikato University WLUG is organising a series of seminars aimed at introducing first and second year students to Linux and OSS in general. We are currently in the process of planning these seminars and are looking for comments on what to include and what to leave out. The seminars will run in weeks 2 and 3 of semester A for 3 nights each week. Each seminar will be around 1.5hrs long. Below is a brief outline of what we are currently planning on covering in each seminar. If you have comments or suggestions please let us know. Seminar 1: (Tue 9th Mar) - Introduction to Linux / OSS - What is OSS - What is Linux - What is GNU - Why use Linux - History of Linux - About the Linux Distributions Seminar 2: (Wed 10th Mar) - Bash - A general introduction to bash, what it is, how to use it and tips for performing common tasks. Seminar 3: (Thu 11th Mar) - Emacs - A general introduction to emacs, what it is, how to use it and tips for performing common tasks. Seminar 4: (Tue 16th Mar) - Processes - An introduction to process control in unix systems. We will cover how to start, stop, suspend and kill processes. Seminar 5: (Wed 17th Mar) - Applications - An introduction to useful OSS applications that can be used under linux. This will focus on what is installed in the TSG labs and will probably cover (pending confirmation) - ssh / scp - Mozilla - OpenOffice Seminar 6: (Thu 18th Mar) - Summary / Q&A - A summary of how to put everything that has been taught together, followed by a question and answer session. The popular cheat sheet will be given out again and we are looking at providing each attendee with a copy of Knoppix. Comments welcome :) Regards -- Matt Brown Email: matt(a)mattb.net.nz GSM : 021 611 544

[Fwd: PuTTY version 0.54 is released]
by Oliver Jones 12 Feb '04

12 Feb '04

For all you chaps who have windows boxes and access your Linux server/router/workstation via PuTTY.... The most interesting thing is the Unix port. Why he's done this when there are the great OpenSSH apps on most Unixes I don't know. But I guess some people will prefer the GTK front end. Regards -----Forwarded Message----- From: Simon Tatham <anakin(a)pobox.com> To: putty-announce(a)lists.tartarus.org Subject: PuTTY version 0.54 is released Date: Thu, 12 Feb 2004 19:41:08 +0000 PuTTY version 0.54 is released ------------------------------ All the pre-built binaries, and the source code, are now available from the PuTTY website at http://www.chiark.greenend.org.uk/~sgtatham/putty/ Development work on PuTTY for the past year or so has mostly involved taking it apart and putting it back together again for improved portability; so I'm afraid there aren't many visible new features in 0.54. Some of the highlights are: - Dynamic SSH port forwarding. PuTTY can now act as a SOCKS server, and programs using that server will have their connections forwarded over SSH. - PSFTP should now be usefully fast. - When connecting through a proxy (SOCKS or HTTP), PuTTY is now able to let the proxy do the DNS lookup. - Some of the default settings have changed. Notably, the SSH protocol is now the default, and SSH2 is preferred over SSH1. (This will not affect anyone who already has Default Settings stored in their registry, since those override PuTTY's internal defaults.) - Bug fix: forwarding SMB connections over SSH should now work. - Bug fix: the configuration box was slow to respond because it occasionally went looking for printers across the network by accident. It shouldn't do this any more. - A couple of minor vulnerabilities have been fixed (none with very serious impact, or with known exploits). But the _really_ big feature resulting from the substantial rewrite is that there is now a Unix version of most of the PuTTY utilities: - There's a Unix PuTTY and PuTTYtel, which are GTK applications. - There's a Unix Plink, PSCP and PSFTP, which look pretty much exactly like their Windows equivalents. - There's a Unix PuTTYgen, which is a command-line program unlike its Windows counterpart. Anyone who needs to convert OpenSSH or ssh.com private keys into PuTTY format in an automated way may be able to do it using this utility. - There's an entirely new utility: `pterm', which is an xterm clone using the PuTTY terminal emulator. (Again, it uses GTK.) - As yet there is no Unix version of Pageant, but all the utilities can interoperate with OpenSSH's ssh-agent. The Unix port is available from the PuTTY Download page as a source tarball. Enjoy using PuTTY! Umm, I don't think it will be strictly for Uni students, but we will be tailoring a lot of the material to make it useful for people who are using the CS undergraduate labs. We may need to try and get some indication of who many people are wanting to come just so we can book a big enough lecture theatre... kate question
by Glenn Ramsey 09 Feb '04

09 Feb '04

Hi, Probably this isn't the best place to ask this but since it's low traffic and I'm not subbed to any of the kde lists.... In the kate editor in kde 3.1.4 there is a block comment feature and the keyboard shortcuts are comment = Ctrl+# and uncomment = Ctrl+Shift+# . I can't get these to work because in order to get Ctrl+# you actually need to do Ctrl+Shift+3. They work fine if you use the menu. I wanted to change the shortcut key but I couldn't find anyplace that allows this particular one to be changed. Does anyone know how to make this shortcut work? Compiling kernels for Red Hat
by Gerwin van de Steeg 27 Jan '04

27 Jan '04

The easiest I've found to do this is to use rpmbuild on the spec file, the problem is including your own patches and getting them in the right place without conflicts. The problem I was having was that my patch (LIDS) wasw conflicting with the redhat patches. Never actually tested if it would work. Otherwise there's a base kernel.org spec file available from somewhere but I'd have to find the link to it first in the large heap of miscellaneous links. Gerwin van de Steeg

managing ip subnets etc
by Stephen Pearce 25 Jan '04

25 Jan '04

Hi Could someone help with advise please I have a netgear mr814 wireless router with a dedicated adsl connector and 4 10/100mBPS utp sockets. Currently I have my main linux box hocked up via a cable to this .. the mr814 does dhcp allocation .. I do not have an adsl connection, but use a 56k internal modem to connect to my isp who assigns me a dynamic ip number each time I connect. I have found that if I connect to the isp (using kppp) I cannot access the internal netwrk .. including the router (which has its own 192.168.x.x ip number .. similarly although I can dial using kppp and make a connection .. I cannot access the internet when the intenal netwrk is up and running. I presume this is due to confusion about where to send the packets .. to the modem or the lan card. What is the best way to separate out these 2 networks and get them running so .. say I could use a browser on one of the boxes with a wlan card to connect thru the main linjux box and modem to the internet? This is an area of confusion for me .. does ipchanins do something here? Thanks Stephen Pearce

Compiling kernels for Red Hat
by Craig Box 24 Jan '04

24 Jan '04

I'm running a 2.6 kernel on my desktop (Red Hat 9) machine, with a RPM from Arjan van de Ven at http://people.redhat.com/arjanv/2.5/RPMS.kernel/. I want to take the standard RH kernel (which I try and keep to as much as possible) and patch it for a couple of things, and then build an RPM which is as close to the original version as possible, with just the added extra features. When I unpack the SRPM of the kernel source, I get a /usr/src/linux-2.6.1-whatever directory, and I can run 'make rpm' in that directory after configuration. However, this gives me an RPM that doesn't insert itself in grub.conf and doesn't build an initrd. I assume there is a similar method to Debian's make-kpkg that will build me an all in one RPM, and I just can't find it. I expect one of our local Red Hat gurus (orj?) has battled this before, and I'd love to know what other people do in this situation. Thanks, Craig

Forget the VGA. If you want a used 15" monitor with built in speakers I have one here you can have for $20 + Shipping ($30 Mainfreight, so $50 total). Then you could at least use 800x600 which might be acceptable. 640x480 is ridiculously small. Open Office and VGA Monitors
by Roger 21 Jan '04

21 Jan '04

A while ago I posted a question asking if it were possible for Open Office to work with Red Hat 8 and an old VGA monitor, because there is a problem that the fonts are far too big, e.g. "file" takes up 3/4's of the screen. The response was basically "no" nothing practical could be done about the problem. However, that does not appear to be the complete story for two reasons. Firstly, I have seen a posting saying that it is a Red Hat 8 bug to do with the initial specification of the screen size. The message indicated that if the screen size was specified in mm's then there was no prob., but if inches were used then there was a problem. Red Hat have supposedly posted a fix, but I have not been able to find it. Can anyone tell me where to find the fix or how to specify the screen size on an installed system please? The second reason that Open Office must work with my configuration is that it does for one of the users. This user has been the most uncontrolled and cavalier in his use of the Internet and downloads. Initially, I thought it was due to the fact that he had Macro Media Flash and the others didn't. However, this proved to be not true. Can anyone suggest where I should look to find the difference that makes Open Office work for this one user, please? Thanks in anticipation Roger

Printing from the Wiki
by Daniel Lawson 15 Jan '04

15 Jan '04

I've just fixed printing support for the WLUG Wiki (http://www.wlug.org.nz/) If you print a page on the wiki, it'll now strip off the sidebar, top and bottom navbars, and anything else thats not really content for that page. This is done using CSS, so if you have a browser that can change style type, you can select the 'Printer' style to see what it will come out like. EG: in Mozilla, go to "View | Use Style | Printer" Or, you can *probably* use 'Print Preview' and it should more or less display right, although Mozilla is a bit broken here - it'll look like the text is overlapping, but it will print out just fine :) Daniel

PSM newbie help
by Gun Caundle 08 Jan '04

08 Jan '04

I am a Linux newbie. I have recently installed a RH9 box as part of a Windows network. In Mozilla, when I try to activate my RH9, a window pops up: 'Alert This document cannot be displayed unless you install the Personal Security manager (PSM) Download......etc' I downloaded and copied mozilla-psm 1.2.1-26. to my RH system as root. 2x clicked and the installation window flashed up briefly for about 1 second but didn't install. This window said: " Preparing system update: Before modifying packages on your system package dependencies must be determined. This process may take a few minutes." To confirm, in the terminal window I typed: 'rpm -q psm' "package psm is not installed" Any help would be appreciated to get it installed. NZNOG Conference
by Jamie Curtis 07 Jan '04

07 Jan '04

Hi there, For those of you who are on the WLUG list, but are either unaware or not subscribed to the New Zealand Network Operators Group (NZNOG) list, the WAND group at the University of Waikato are hosting their annual conference late this month. The NZNOG list membership consists mainly of people involved in ISP's however the conference should be of interest to anyone involved in medium to large scale networks, even if they are internal or private networks. Also, if you have a good basic understanding of IP networks the conference provides a good way to extend your knowledge. They are also a great social event and a chance to meet many really interesting people in the NZ Internet scene. Almost all details, online registration etc are available from the conference website: http://www.nznog.org On the schedule are a good bunch of speakers on interesting topics including details of a major IPv6 announcement, wireless IP, VoIP, H.323 Video, NZ NGI, BGP, CityLink plans and a heap more. There'll be speakers from many of NZ's major ISPs and other major industry players and from vendors including Cisco and Juniper. Also a day of workshops and tutorials has been added to the program which will include APNIC's Internet Resource Management Essentials training course and Ian Hastie (Link Information Technology Limited) on Wireless Technology. The APNIC training in particular should be of interest to any who has to deal with any block of realworld IP space. A full abstract of the training is available on the conference website. We've received very generous sponsorship, including from our primary sponsors CityLink and major sponsor InternetNZ. Also from FX networks, the University and the WAND group. This has kept the cost to just $120 for all three days (including lunches, tea and coffee, tee shirt, coffee mug, sponsored bar, etc.) **NOTE*** YOU MUST REGISTER THIS WEEK to get the discounted registration fee or if you require on campus accommodation. If you know of people who might benefit from the conference but who don't regularly read NZNOG (e.g. major customers, operators of national private networks etc) we would be grateful if you would make them aware of the conference. Full details and registration are at: http://www.nznog.org/ Looking forward to seeing you there. Jamie

Hi. Anyone here use new ATI Radeon graphics cards under Linux? I'm looking at buying a new mid range graphics card. Ie, either an nVidia 5700 Ultra or ATI Radeon 9600XT. The supplier I'm looking at is out of stock on the nVidia cards. So I'm considering an ATI. I've never used an ATI video card. I moved from Voodoo's to nVidia way back when Quake 3 came out. In particular I'm interested to know if dual display and TV out works with ATI video cards under Linux. I'm pretty sure this works with nVidia boards under Linux. Anyone here doing things like that on an ATI? Regards -- Oliver Jones » Director » oliver.jones(a)deeperdesign.com » +64 (21) 41 2238 Deeper Design Limited » +64 (7) 377 3328 » www.deeperdesign.com

Thanks for all your info guys. I think I've decided to go with an nVidia 5700 solution even though they arn't as fast as the Radeon 9600XT series. I've found another supplier who has them in stock. Jpegs a security risk?
by Oliver Jones 15 Dec '03

15 Dec '03

A while back M$ produced a host fix for IE/OE that deems JPEG files a security risk and stops users from opening or displaying them. Is this a problem that exists for all attached images or is it just images sent from Linux mail clients? I only use Evolution for email so I'm not sure how to works between OE and OE. Anyone else seen this sort of errant behaviour from OE? So, our revised plan is 6pm, Wednesday 17th. Same deal applies, BYO meat and drink, some salads, bread and softdrink provided. Location still at 3 Liston Crescent. Fingers crossed the weather will be fine ! Hope to see you all there, Cheers, Jamie

Audio Recording
by Daniel Lawson 11 Dec '03

11 Dec '03

As part of a holiday project, I was going to transfer soem vinyls I have to CD. Has anyone done anything like this, and have any preferred tools? Recording the audio isn't really a problem. What I would like some recommendations on are tools which will remove at least some of the record hiss. I know I wont get it all, but i should be able to remove a fair bit. I'll also need to split the vinyls up into tracks, so a wav editor would be a good start. I seem to remember a linux journal article on this recently, so I'm looking through the archives, but if anyone has any recommendations / experiences they wish to share, it would be good :) Thanks, Daniel

chat/pppd dropping DTR
by Jonathan Purvis 09 Dec '03

09 Dec '03

Hello, I have a problem with chat and/or pppd. Run via "pon" on Debian 3.0, pppd dials ok and then hangs up just after making the connection. If i change the authentication from PAP to Chat, then it hangs up after logging in. If i dial up with minicom, login manually and then run "pppd /dev/modem noauth defaultroute", everything is fine. This suggests that the hangup is occuring during the handover from chat to pppd. Swapping the Dynalink 56k modem i was using for my trusty battery powered 14k4 which has the DTR line control the power revealed that pppd was dropping the DTR line, causing the modem to hang up. So how do i stop it doing this? Setting the "local" option on pppd (instead of "modem") had no effect (other than it not noticing the modem had hung up), nor did playing with the "close_delay" option of setserial. The serial ports on this machine come from a Dolphin twin serial PCI card (currently on clearance for $10 at DSE), if anyone is familar with them. Thanks, Jon

Trying to decifer sendmail logs....
by Oliver Jones 09 Dec '03

09 Dec '03

Lately I've noticed I've been getting a lot of these in my maillog: Losing ./qfhB7AvXZ20553: savemail panic SYSERR(root): savemail: cannot save rejected email anywhere Sendmail mail logs make little sense to me.... Here is an example: hB438B623222: to=oliver(a)deeper.co.nz, delay=3+07:49:20, xdelay=00:00:00, mailer=cyrus, pri=121146, relay=localhost, dsn=5.6.0, stat=Service unavailable hB438B623222: hB7AvXZ20553: DSN: Service unavailable hB7AvXZ20553: to=<jimmiegodwinan(a)yahoo.com>, delay=00:00:01, xdelay=00:00:01, mailer=esmtp, pri=30985, relay=mx1.mail.yahoo.com. Or something. It is just concerning me that maybe I'm loosing legitimate mail. I doubt this but it is a worry. I did a search on the web for error messages like this and they indicated that I might not have a postmaster alias setup. Well I don't. I have a "postmaster" mail account setup in cyrus so that spam bounces didn't fill up my personal mailbox. I get enough spam as it is. Which is why stuff like "to=postmaster, ... mailer=cyrus, ... stat=Service unavailable" worries me. If someone can help me identify what the fsck is wrong (if anything) and make those worrisome message go away I'd be most grateful (ie gifts would be dolled out). Forensics revealed a burneye encrypted exploit. Robert van der Meulen managed to decrypt the binary which revealed a kernel exploit. Study of the exploit by the RedHat and SuSE kernel and security teams quickly revealed that the exploit used an integer overflow in the brk system call. Using this bug it is possible for a userland program to trick the kernel into giving access to the full kernel address space. This problem was found in September by Andrew Morton, but unfortunately that was too late for the 2.4.22 kernel release. This bug has been fixed in kernel version 2.4.23 for the 2.4 tree and 2.6.0-test6 kernel tree. For Debian it has been fixed in version 2.4.18-12 of the kernel source packages, version 2.4.18-14 of the i386 kernel images and version 2.4.18-11 of the alpha kernel images. Environment Variable Not Appearing in New Shell
by Roger 01 Dec '03

01 Dec '03

Hi, I am running Red Hat 7, kernel 2.4.9. I am using KDE. I believe I am using the bash shell. Recently I have set up a couple of extra environment variables in the /etc/profile file. They all seem to work fine except the one called LD_LIBRARY_PATH. When I login from the initial login screen and subsequently start a shell the variable is available in that environment. However, if from that shell I then type "su" and become root, the LD_LIBRARY_PATH variable is not available in the new environment, but all the other environment variables appear to be. If I then logout completely and login as root from the initial screen and start a shell then again the LD_LIBRARY_PATH variable is available there. Here is a snippet of the /etc/profile file: # Define the Optimizeit home directory. OPTIMIZEIT_HOME=/home/Roger02/OptimizeitSuite export OPTIMIZEIT_HOME # Set up the library path for Optimizeit LD_LIBRARY_PATH=$OPTIMIZEIT_HOME/lib export LD_LIBRARY_PATH Can anyone please tell me why the LD_LIBRARY_PATH variable is not universally available? Is LD_LIBRARY_PATH a reserved variable that requires some extra configuration to make it universally available? Or have I just done something silly? Note OPTIMIZEIT_HOME was a new variable at the same time as LD_LIBRARY_PATH and is available in all shells that I have tried. I have also tried logging out and in and restarting numerous times. Any pointers would be appreciated. Thanks in anticipation Roger

Changes to list behaviour
by Kim Shepherd 27 Nov '03

27 Nov '03

Hi all, Still alive? Because of the (ever-increasing) ratio of spam:legitimate posts that are getting caught by Mailman, I've changed the default behaviour upon receiving a message from an unsub'd address to 'discard'. It was previously 'hold'. I'd like to make it 'reject' (with a polite message sent back to the author) so you're all aware of when you accidentally post using the wrong e-mail address, but that just makes the spambots think we're listening harder, which in turn creates more useless mail traffic. Yes, I'm lazy. But when you get back from holiday and see "77 Pending Moderator Requests" that all require manual rejection/acceptance, it doesn't exactly make your day. ;-P -k.

WLUG meeting Monday 23/11/03
by Craig Box 23 Nov '03

23 Nov '03

In the absence of the meeting reminder bot, I'd just like to remind everyone about tomorrow's meeting: we have a guest speaker, Peter Hooker from Globaltech NZ, to tell us about ACCPAC accounting/business solutions for Linux. (There's more on the Wiki.) Peters talk probably wont last very long, and this is the last formal presentation meeting for the year so please feel free to bring your computers along if you have anything you need to have looked at or want to have a play with. If anyone wants to have a look at the new Fedora Linux Project release or the White Box Enterprise Linux (Red Hat Enterprise 3 rebuild) let me know on the list. ------------------------------------------------- This mail sent through IMP: http://horde.org/imp/

Upcoming meeting - ACCPAC Business Software, Mon Nov 24th, Crawshaw School
by Craig Box 17 Nov '03

17 Nov '03

Hi everyone At this coming Monday's meeting (November 24th), Peter Hooker from Globaltech NZ in Christchurch (http://www.globaltechnz.com/) will be presenting ACCPAC (http://www.accpac.com) and their line of business applications for Linux. Globaltech are ACCPAC partners who are looking to partner with Linux consultants for ACCPAC deployments, so if you're in the IT business, you're encouraged to attend this meeting. While I realise that this isn't relevant to everyone, that's the problem with a diverse user base. I've asked that Peter's presentation be broad enough to be of interest to everyone, and not just be a sales pitch. For the non consultant, are people interested in also having a brief look at Red Hat's new "community" release, Fedora Core 1? (If you want a copy of this, Matthias will probably roll you one off for a very nominal donation - reply to the list or email him privately. Thanks Matthias.) If there's anything else that people want to see or hear about at this meeting, please post to this list - this will be our last formal presentation for the year, so if you have any problems with your PC that you would like help with, feel free to bring it along too. Please note that the meeting is at Crawshaw School (http://www.wlug.org.nz/CrawshawSchool has a map) and will start around 7:30pm. Craig

"Why the @#$% did my rpm break since last night?"
by Matthias Dallmeier 14 Nov '03

14 Nov '03

"[Update 2003-11-13]: The packages for Red Hat Linux 9 have been updated for compatibility with kernels not provided by Red Hat." -- https://rhn.redhat.com/errata/RHSA-2003-325.html Any Red Hat Linux 9 user who uses a non-Red Hat kernel and installed the glibc update from yesterday evening is likely to find that rpm no longer works for them. To fix the problem, export LD_ASSUME_KERNEL=2.2.5 to fix rpm and then install the updated glibc package provided by Red Hat. -- Matthias -- http://matthias.dallmeier.net/

Encypting backup utility?
by Glyn Webster 09 Nov '03

09 Nov '03

Does anyone know of a Linux backup utility that uses GPG to encypt individual files? I've recovered files from CRDOMs with bad bits recently, and didn't know it until I tried using them. Storing each file with a checksum would be the answer to that. Also, I'd like to be give backups to almost anyone willing to store them. Encrypting the backups would be the answer to that: "Please keep this somewhere cool and dry" is far less of an imposition than "Hide this forever. It has all my personal email on it". I think GPG encrypting individual files would provide both encryption and checksum. Is there anything wrong with that idea? And has anyone seen a tool to do this? (I could write a script to do it if had to, but I'm reinventing other wheels.) -- Glyn Webster ~ Simplicity Himself. ~ http://tiddly-pom.com
