Acceptable use of the WLUG Mailing List
by Meeting Reminder bot 30 Apr '05

30 Apr '05

The WLUG Mailing List is the discussion-list extension of the Waikato Linux Users Group (Incorporated). As such, we expect members of this list to adhere to the principles espoused in the official WLUG Charter[1], in particular, Rule 6, which covers the activities on this mailing list. While this is an Acceptable Use Policy, the WLUG Committee do recognise the need for informal discussion among list members, and draconian administration is not the goal here. Please keep in mind, however, that your comments to this list do represent the WLUG, and while it is good to be seen as an organisation with a sense of humour, some comments may do major harm to our credibility as a serious advocate of GNU/Linux and all things Free Software/ Open Source related. List discussion should * be honest * accentuate the positive, without hyperbole or blatant misrepresentation * maintain a reasonable level of spelling and grammar * not indulge in ad hominem attacks * not continue inflammatory or abusive threads * not be unprofessional or petty, especially with respect to the names of other software companies * not promote or denigrate political, cultural, or religious views * not indulge in marketing or advertising, other than on a private sale basis, or advertising of jobs - which may be announced once only * not reproduce copyrighted material without permission from the copyright holder * not defame any person or organisation Posters who consistently violate these guidelines will be dealt with at the discretion of the List Maintainer. If you feel you have been unfairly dealt with, you have recourse to any member of the WLUG Committee[2]. Certain mailing list etiquette should also be maintained: * please use only plain text (not HTML) * reply inline or below when quoting, rather than on top * trim quotes (don't reply quoting a 10 page message with a single line of reply) If you have any questions, start reading at http://www.gweep.ca/~edmonds/usenet/ml-etiquette.html. These points have been established over a long time on this list. If you want to question them, please do it off list. As list users, use your discretion when pulling people up over etiquette - please reply off list, and if there is a serious breach, the list administrator will probably have dealt with it off-list already. XML Schema Help
by Joseph Gibbs 28 Apr '05

28 Apr '05

Hi, I'm writing an XML schema for a uni assingment. I have this thing pretty much down, except for one thing. I'm referring to this document entitled "Global versus local" (http://www.xfront.com/GlobalVersusLocal.html) According to that document, and for my requirements, I can take two approaches to this. I can write things in a "Salami Slice Design" or a "Venetian Blind Design". Obviously a "which way should I design this" question comes down to how I'll be using my schema, it's purpose etc. From the URL above: "[1] The Venetian Blind design is the one to choose where your schemas require the flexibility to turn namespace exposure on or off with a simple switch, and where component reuse is important. [2] Where your task requires that you make available to instance document authors the option to use element substitution, then use the Salami Slice design." I'm not trying to ask "how do I do my assignment", my questions are: What is "namespace exposure", and why does it matter?, and, what is an "instance document" and "element substitution"? Thanks, Joseph.

Dual Boot
by John Torrance 27 Apr '05

27 Apr '05

Thanks for the info. I had no desire to start a distro war. I do have another question though. The last time I tried to load a dual boot system with Fedora and Windows XP with Grub, I completely stuffed up my boot sector and could not access windows. I found out later that it was recoverable but I buggered it up so badly, I had to "format C" and start again. This only seems to happen with the NTFS file system windows and not using the older system which I used successfully on my other computer. I am keen to load Ubuntu but am terrified of stuffing up my windows partition. Has anyone successfully loaded a dual bootup system with Ubuntu and Windows XP (NTFS)? Cheers John

Resetting the preferrred browser in KDE/Debian
by Glenn Ramsey 27 Apr '05

27 Apr '05

I am running Debian/Testing with KDE and I mostly use firefox for web browsing. Somehow (ok, really because I fiddled with the config) it has become the default browser and I can't figure out how to change it back. This is annoying because In KDE you can choose "run command" from the start menu and enter "#commandname" to get a nicely formatted man page. On my system only konqueror understands this but currently it tries to start firefox which reports that it doesn't understand the man: protocol. update-alternatives says this: pixie:~# update-alternatives --display x-www-browser x-www-browser - status is auto. link currently points to /usr/bin/konqueror /usr/bin/mozilla-firefox - priority 70 slave x-www-browser.1.gz: /usr/share/man/man1/mozilla-firefox.1.gz /usr/bin/mozilla - priority 80 slave x-www-browser.1.gz: /usr/share/man/man1/mozilla.1.gz /usr/bin/konqueror - priority 100 Current `best' version is /usr/bin/konqueror. pixie:~# update-alternatives --list x-www-browser /usr/bin/mozilla-firefox /usr/bin/mozilla /usr/bin/konqueror pixie:/etc/alternatives# ls -l x-www-browser lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 18 Apr 27 11:09 x-www-browser -> /usr/bin/konqueror Does anyone know where/how to reset this? Alternatively is there an easy way to just reset KDE to all have everything back to the default? Would it be unwise to delete or rename my .kde directory and have it recreate it? making a bootable CD
by John Torrance 27 Apr '05

27 Apr '05

Sorry, I hope that this is not a stupid question. I have downloaded the Ubuntu Iso - I have tried to burn a bootable disk with gnome toaster - I only seem to be able to make disks with the iso file on it. I tried dragging and dropping the file then right clicking and asking for a bootable ISO image but still got another fine .ISO coaster. Clearly my windows programs won't read these - how do I make a loadable disk from the ISO with gnome toaster? Thanks for the all the advice Cheers

logger
by James Clark 26 Apr '05

26 Apr '05

This isn't new to me, but maybe someone might think "hey that's just what I wanted", since it's a slow day on yon list. If your running an application and want to capture the output to a system log file, you can use logger. Instead of explain it in too much depth, try the below while tail -f'ing /var/log/daemon.log. echo test | logger -p daemon.info -t \[test\] You'll now have an idea of what it does and why you might like to use it, of course you can do more so you can always rtfm @ `man logger`. Cheers, James.

/etc
by Bnonn 26 Apr '05

26 Apr '05

A random question. Does /etc stand for Et Cetera? I can't really see why it would, but then I can't think of anything else it would stand for. Et Cetera means literally "and so forth", so I'd expect a folder called /etc to contain miscellaneous files rather than configuration data. Anyone know? Bnonn

Official announcement of 2005 Installfest
by Craig Box 24 Apr '05

24 Apr '05

Hi everyone, The Waikato Linux Users Group are proud to announce their second annual Linux installfest, to be held at the Crawshaw School Hall on Crawshaw Drive, Hamilton, from 10am on Saturday 7th May. Registration for the installfest is now open on the WLUG website at http://www.wlug.org.nz/InstallFest. There is no charge to attend. "Our last installfest was a great success and an educational experience for the WLUG, as well as the participants" says group president Greig McGill. "We look forward to applying lessons learned last year, and making this one as good as it can be." Over 50 people attended the 2004 event, and this year WLUG intend to streamline the installations in order to run more training. For people who are interested in Free Software, but not yet ready to take the leap into running Linux, the WLUG will also have demonstrations of free software for Microsoft Windows, such as the tremendously popular Firefox web browser and OpenOffice.org office software. How you can help ---------------- If you are interested in helping with the installfest organization, check out the http://www.wlug.org.nz/InstallFestToDo page, and email me if there is anything there you'd like to have a go at. If you want to sign up to either attend or help on the day, please register on the registration page. (The page will be updated later tonight; if you go earlier, please make it clear if you're a helper or a new installation). Thanks Craig

6to4 site examples wanted
by Steven Lisson 24 Apr '05

24 Apr '05

Hi, I have been having some difficulty accessing the www.wlug.org.nz site via IPv6 from my network, all machines apart from the gateway do not use a 6to4 addressing (e.g. 2001:db0:10f7:1::1), as soon as a trace leaves the 2001:: range the trace fails (no matter if it leaves IPv6 via the 6to4 interface on the gateway or elsewhere on the IPv6 internet), however, the gateway that has a 6to4 address on it can ping, trace and view the website without difficulty. To assist with further troubleshooting further from my end could someone please provide me with some other sites that use 6to4 addresses so I can troubleshoot further, I was going through a list of IPv6 websites that I know of but only 1 site I tested out of about 70 on the list used a 2002:: address and it was offline in both the ipv4 and 6 internet. Sorry to be a hassle but would like to get to the cause of the issue and be able to rectify it as it is pretty much the only site I regularly visit via IPv6 that I have problems with. Regards, Steve

Joining split avi files.
by Oliver Jones 23 Apr '05

23 Apr '05

Howdy folks. Linux to the rescue yet again. I needed to join some avi files together, end on end. I did a Google and found lots of shareware/download-ware utilities for Windows for doing the job. All wanted money. Of course I thought, "This is dumb. There has to be a Linux command-line tool for this." One of the Google results mentioned avicat on Linux. Part of Mplayer's transcode suite. I knew I had transcode installed but avicat didn't exist. So I went, "$ avi<tab><tab>" and lo and behold the command avimerge appeared and looked promising. After a quite man read it became clear that this was exactly what I wanted and I set about "fixing" my avi files. Hurrah! Intro and ISPs
by Ian Swainson 20 Apr '05

20 Apr '05

Mornin All, Just arrived in NZ from (not so) sunny Ireland, recently joined your esteemed mailing list, looking forward to catching up with some of you in person at the next installfest. Please be gentle with me... As I've just arrived, I'm looking for a nice Linux-friendly ISP to give my hard-earned cash to - any recommendations would be gratefully received. Google is usually my friend, but NZ certainly has a lot more choice than Ireland. In Ireland many of the ISPs are free, and make their money from the phone-calls. They all seem to need registration here - is that the case? In relation to above, does anyone know if this USB Modem will play with Linux nicely? http://www.dse.co.nz/cgi-bin/dse.storefront/42656b330da56e082740c0a87f99070… ...I note that it has a Conexant chipset, which reeks of WinModem nastiness. I need the modem for a lappy, so can't go the internal route. Feedback delightfully received. I have had some success with WinModems on Linux, the drivers certainly have come a long way. Not sure about this one tho. Anyhoo, let the flaming begin (although surely ye can't be as bad as the ILUG...:) ) Cheers, ian -- "Turn off the lights and I'll glow." -Implausible Claims Made by Vanilla Ice in "Ice Ice Baby." http://www.mcsweeneys.net/links/lists/26DougErickson.html

Command line util of the day.
by Oliver Jones 19 Apr '05

19 Apr '05

To continue the trend set by James Clark... Here is my choice for useful command-line tool of the day. fold Fold is a simple little command line util that lets you fold lines of text at a particular width. Eg if you have some long lines of text, say out of some HTML or other document format that only maintains paragraph breaks, that you want to show on a console screen you can do this: fold -s -w 70 long-lines.txt |less This command will fold the text from long-lines.txt at 70 characters (or the nearest preceding space). If you leave off -s the lines will get cut in the middle of words. Most consoles are 80 columns wide and fold defaults to a width (-w) of 80 columns. This can also be useful in scripts where you need to display a paragraph of text with interpolated variables which you don't know the width of beforehand. Eg: echo -n "Enter some text: " read var para="You said, '$var'. That's really interesting. But \ do you know the answer to the ultimate question of life, \ the universe, and everything?"; echo $para | fold -s -w 78 - Regards -- Oliver Jones » Roving Code Warrior oliver(a)deeperdesign.com » +64 (21) 41 2238 » www.deeperdesign.com

DHBs to test open source alternative to Windows and Office
by Bnonn 12 Apr '05

12 Apr '05

<http://computerworld.co.nz/news.nsf/UNID/39A5FAC6A45E8FB2CC256FDA00319B5C?O…> --- DHBs to test open source alternative to Windows and Office Boards band together to reduce their software licensing costs Stephen Bell, Wellington New Zealand's District Health Boards plan a trial of open source desktop software in an effort to reduce the licensing fees they pay to Microsoft — more than $20 million over three years, according to one estimate. Microsoft licences are a major element of DHBs’ software costs, says Phil Brimacombe, CIO of Waitemata and Counties Manukau DHBs and healthAlliance, the shared services organisation owned by the two boards. While there are some “power users” likely to need the full capabilities of Microsoft Office and related applications, users with less elaborate IT demands may be able to use OpenOffice.org and other open source software at much-reduced cost, Brimacombe says. At a quarterly meeting of DHB CIOs in February, a joint three-part plan to reduce software costs was adopted. First, the DHBs will pilot an open source desktop environment, being put together by Steve Rayner, CIO of Wanganui DHB, to assess how many users it will serve adequately. Rayner plans to support two categories of user: "power users" with Microsoft desktop software, and "regular clinical users" with Novell Enterprise Desktop, OpenOffice.org and GroupWise running on Suse Linux. The pilot will seek to establish how many users there are with basic needs and whether it is possible to meet them with an entirely non-Microsoft environment, Brimacombe says. “The majority of users don’t use Access databases, for example; they wouldn’t use PowerPoint; they’re not advanced users of Excel and they probably only use about 20% of the functions of Word. They may manage quite well with OpenOffice.” There are also open source options for clinical database access clients, “but we don’t know how practical those are”, he says. Brimacombe expects one of the knotty problems will be DHBs’ extensive use of Outlook and Exchange. They will have to find some practical email alternative, he says. Another initiative is to approach suppliers of health software to see if they are willing to develop open source versions of their applications. At least one major provider of clinical systems, Orion, has told the board that it is looking seriously at supporting the open source Mozilla Firefox browser with its its clinical portal, Concerto, as an alternative to Internet Explorer, Brimacombe says. Laboratory software developer Sysmex has also indicated a willingness to explore open source solutions, he says. The third part of the DHBs' plan is to push for stronger representation on the public sector committee negotiating the details of G2006, the next iteration of the New Zealand Government’s bulk licensing agreement with Microsoft. Steve Mayo-Smith, CIO of Auckland DHB, will be the DHB CIO representative on the public sector negotiation group. He says DHBs will collectively have spent over $20 million on Microsoft licences during the three year of the previous agreement, G2003. “In particular the DHBs with a large user population end up with little choice within the G2003 agreement, and feel captured by the structure of that agreement into paying the highest charges, often for products that are not widely needed,” Mayo-Smith says. “The potential cost efficiencies of open source are also attractive to smaller DHBs who do not have the resources of the larger DHBs.” “We’re not expecting any stunning short-term breakthrough,” says Brimacombe, but the joint initiative, alongside individual DHB plans in the open source direction, could go some way to reducing Microsoft expenditure, “which is a big number for the taxpayer”. The push to reduce licensing costs has been building for many months, Brimacombe says; one catalyst came in mid-2004, when Dr Ross Boswell, clinical director of information systems for Counties Manukau and an open source enthusiast, addressed the quarterly CIO meeting. Discussion since then has built up to the point of a formal agreement among the boards. ---

Time for a new PC to run Linux on?
by Craig Box 11 Apr '05

11 Apr '05

Hi everyone, We're looking at sourcing some second hand (ex lease) PCs to sell at the installfest. While what we have on the day depends on what the supplier has in stock, current prices put a Pentium 3 733 machine with 256mb RAM and 10GB of HDD (plus CD-ROM/sound/network etc) at around $250. We will of course look forward to taking these machines and helping you set Linux up on them. I would like to get an indication of how many people might be interested in taking up an offer like this, so we have an idea of how many PCs to have on hand during the day. Regards, Craig

Patents The only way to fight back against these software patent advocates is to think up idea's, get together with friends and supporters and patent all your idea's. That way, when these multinational rat-bags go to patent an idea - you've already done it. Its cheaper to patent things than it is to object to the patents. So why not. PCI Hardware Database
by Perry Lorier 10 Apr '05

10 Apr '05

In preparation for the WLUG Installfest, I've written up a quick hack to help people identify hardware, what drivers they need, where they can get those drivers and any quirks that the hardware may have (eg, defaulting to the internal connector rather than the external one, needing firmware to be flash upgraded before use, limitations of the device that may not be apparent initially etc). For example: http://www.wlug.org.nz/~perry/pci/?id=0200:10ec:8139:10ec:8139 What I'd really like is for people on this list to run a small shell script that looks at the hardware in their machine, and produces links to the hardware database. After following those links you'll be presented with a web page with the information known about that device, and the ability to leave some notes about that piece of hardware. This is especially important for people with winmodems as being able to quickly detect and find drivers for winmodems at the Installfest is critical for a stress free day. I'd like people to download the shell script at http://www.wlug.org.nz/~perry/pci/pci.sh and run it, check your hardware and make sure it's known about in hardware database, and write down any notes that you may have about it (especially things like if you had to download 3rd party drivers from somewhere, or minimum required kernel versions). This script requires a 2.6 kernel, and for /sys to be mounted (this should be true of any recently release distribution) If you can't get the piece of hardware working under Linux please leave a note to that effect so we can research it before the Installfest so we can have an answer to your problems ready so we can spend the rest of the day making your machine shine :) If any hardware is not detected by the database please email me the information about your hardware with: ( lspci -v ; sort -u /lib/modules/*/modules.pcimap ) | mail perry(a)coders.net -s "PCI database" The script is a bit raw (ok, a lot raw) at the moment, I plan on tidying it up a lot, but I'm also keen on getting information about various bits of hardware as soon as possible so we can start researching it in preparation for the Installfest. If you have suggestions, comments or even mild thoughts please email me (perry(a)coders.net) with them and I'll try and incorporate them into the programs before the Installfest.

Patent grabbing could harm the Internet
by David 06 Apr '05

06 Apr '05

Just a little article I came across in the Bangkok Post I.T. Database today. The article can be found at http://www.bangkokpost.com/Database/06Apr2005_datacol57.php Wanda Sloan (Sloan Ranger) has also done a review on Netscape 8 in late beta stage which has an IE rendering engine for sites that don't render properly in the Mozilla engine, which can be found here. http://www.bangkokpost.com/Database/06Apr2005_datacol59.php Regards David Bowen COMPUTER CURRENTS Patent grabbing could harm the Internet The US Patent Office seems to be granting patents for just about anything these days James Hein It was discovered recently by the Public Patent Foundation (Pubpat) that Microsoft had filed a patent application for something very similar to IPv6, which is to be the next generation of the Internet Protocol. This kind of patent grabbing can only damage the Internet as a whole. Over the past few years some companies have been trying to get as many patents as they could registered by the US Patent Office, which seems to have been going through a period where they granted everything. They probably won't ever assert the patent, especially since they forgot to mention any of the work done by the Internet Engineering Task Force (IETF) on the process, but like SCO's efforts it could keep a few companies in line who might be worried about Microsoft ever trying to. Pubpat at http://www.pubpat.org is a group that works to protect the public from damage caused by poor implementation of the patent system. Patent number 6101499, "Method and computer program product for automatically generating an Internet Protocol (IP) address," was issued to Microsoft in 2000. By granting these types of patents the Patent Office is essentially supporting the monopolistic nature of a company like Microsoft and at the same time reducing the chances that the next generation of standards will be good ones. In this case the MS employees listed as the inventors were on the IPv6 committee of the IETF, the real inventors of the system. Ironically, in other recent news Microsoft has demanded reform of the US patent system to improve patent quality.

No, it's not reasonable at all. Especially not for a mailing list which will have a high rate of people using command line only mail clients, or perhaps self-written mail clients. Just because *you* use a mail client that supports HTML emails, does not mean every one *else* does. As I've said, this is mitigated by configuring your client to send an HTML block and a plain text block, however your client was not originally configured to do this, which is *probably* what prompted the "fix your client" thing anyway. > So, as I asked before with my sudo question, what am I missing? SMB question
by Raymond Burgess 05 Apr '05

I am running a machine with RH 7.1, samba-2.0.10 I moving some large files from a Windows XP machine to the large amount of diskspace that is available ont he Linux machine. Files that are larger than 4GB fail to copy. Once the progress reaches 4GB windows prompts you if you wish to overright the exisiting file. I am already planning on installing a newer release on the linux box, probably Fedora Code 3 (or 4, as It will probably be out by the time I get around to it). I would like to know if any of you have successfully copied files larger than 4GB from a Windows machine to a recent build on samba. I'm not sure if it's Samba, Windows XP or the SMB protocol that is limited at 4GB. I realy don't care either, but I would like to know if this will work, it might motivate me to upgrade a little faster ;-) Anyone with FC3 able to confirm that this has worked. Raymond

Parliamentary Questions
by Greig McGill 05 Apr '05

05 Apr '05

Hi all, After Rodney Hide spoke to us last year, he suggested that our most effective tool for advocacy would be to formulate a list of parliamentary questions. A good explanation of the usefulness of these can be found here: http://www.act.org.nz/question.jsp Mr. Hide has offered to put our questions forward, but at the moment they are a tad incoherent. Could we have some keen volunteers to edit http://www.wlug.org.nz/ParliamentaryQuestions? Be brutal. Don't worry about retaining comments - they are retained in the wiki's revision history. I'd really like to submit these in "ready to ask" form to Mr. Hide by the end of this month. Please note: The WLUG has no political affiliation with ACT or any other political party, but we know a useful tool when we see one. :) Please don't submit these questions yourself, as we would like them to all be submitted together from a single point of contact to maximise their efficiency. Thanks, Greig McGill El Presidente.

Sudo
by Bnonn 05 Apr '05

05 Apr '05

Hi everyone. I'm wondering if someone can explain the rationale behind sudo. Ubuntu uses sudo by default, rather than having normal root access, although you can use root access if you wish. This is supposedly done with security in mind, but I don't see how it makes things more secure. It seems to me that allowing a user to execute commands which require root privileges, without having the root password, is really dangerous. For example, logged in as bnonn I can execute: $ sudo passwd root And change the root password. This doesn't seem secure to me! What am I missing? Regards Bnonn

Mailing list etiquette (was Re: Sudo)
by Daniel Lawson 05 Apr '05

> > >I'm happy to alter my mailer to observe the netiquette you speak of. I'm >afraid I wasn't aware of it. What is the reason behind it, may I ask? > > What is the reason behind not posting an HTML only email to a mailing list? It's often extended to "Don't post in HTML at all", for a variety of reasons, some of which might be weighted more highly in this case due to the nature of this particular list. When you post in HTML or RTF, or to spell it out clearly, in anything that isn't plain ASCII or ISO-8859, you make it significantly harder for people whose mailers don't understand the format you use to read your email. While you can feel free to inconvenience your friends as much as you like, you should not assume that everyone on a mailinglist will have the ability to read whatever non-basic format you post in. Now, you might argue that "all modern email clients support HTML, so why can't I use it?". Quite simply, not everyone runs an email client that supports HTML. Or they've disabled it. I'd also suggest that on a LUG mailing list especially, the proportion of users with email clients that will not parse HTML is considerably higher than on your typical mailing list. If someone does have a client that doesn't have HTML read support, or if they have disabled it, they end up having to read the raw HTML to read your post. Yes, I can parse HTML. No, I don't want to unless I'm developing a webpage. I'll skip an HTML only email sooner than read it, especially with the cluttered HTML most email clients generate. This is mitigated somewhat by sending HTML and plain blocks, but you don't really gain much from HTML emails. Also, many people read mailing lists in digest form. HTML (and other formats) tend to break in digest mode. Basically, when posting to a mailing list, you're taking part in a community of peers. By sending HTML only emails, you're doing something equivalent to interrupting people's conversations in loud Swahili. I have to say here that I use thunderbird, which seems to like sending in HTML and plain by default, and will reply to HTML in HTML and plain by default. This isn't my preferred choice! > > >> Daniel Lawson wrote: >> > > >>>> As humourous as this thread is, HTML mails generally are discouraged >>>> to mailing lists, as a form of netiquette. I've > followed the instructions at: > > http://kb.mozillazine.org/Thunderbird_:_FAQs_:_Using_Plain_Text > Not only is there the plain vs html text emails, there is also the way in which you post. NZOSS tries to use a post at the bottom of each email, making the thread logical to read, snipping where needed if the thread becomes too long. This is probmatic for those that use Outlook, for example, since outlook will post to the top of the email.. I have a link to mailing list etiquette, but cant find it atm. Mike

My modern eMail reader (copyright 2004) doesn't display images that aren't included in the eMail as an attachment. This is a security feature. Funding applications need to be for a specific project, normally for the purchase of physical items, with a prepared budget, and not just for general expenses. If any members on the list have any suggestions of things that they would like to see the LUG apply for funding for, please contact me off list by 5pm tomorrow. Thanks, Craig

Mozilla Foundation.
by Oliver Jones 18 Mar '05

Hi Folks. I decided to donate some bucks to the Mozilla Foundation and in the process bought a Firefox/Thunderbird Guide & CD and a Firefox poster. I don't need them so I thought I'd donate them to the WLUG. Perhaps the poster can be displayed somewhere prominently at Waikato Uni in an effort to encourage Firefox adoption. Where do I send them? UPS's for sale, work with Linux, BSD, etc.
by Oliver Jones 16 Mar '05

16 Mar '05

Hi Folks. As we are Linux types we tend to leave out PC's and servers on all the time. As such it is good to have UPS power protection. Historically I've always used SOLA (now Powerware) gear. I have a few used SOLA UPS's for sale. I have an older SOLA 320/700VA device for sale for $80. A newer SOLA 325/750VA for $250 and a SOLA 520/1800VA Rackmount for $970. The 520/1800VA device is only about 14 months old and in excellent condition. I also have a SOLA 325/1000VA device but I think its battery has died. I need to run some tests. The outcome of those tests will dictate price. Batteries can be easily sourced from the NZ distributor in Auckland. These are all good quality devices with online buck and boost to keep the power running smoothly into protected equipment. The 700VA & 750VA devices will keep a workstation/server running for about 30 to 45 minutes on battery depending on the equipments current draw. The Rackmount unit will keep a few power hungry servers running for about the same time. Less power hungry devices will probably last about 1.5 hours on it. All of the UPS devices can be monitored via their included serial cables and they come with monitoring software for a variety of OSs including Linux and BSD. Though the included Unix software isn't as good as NUT (www.networkupstools.org) I actually managed to get SOLA to provide protocol documentation of the UPSs to the NUT project which was nice. The 520 also has an SNMP expansion card bay. No need to replace power cords either like you do with some APC gear. All the UPS's have four standard AU/NZ power plugs on the back. If anyone needs a good Linux/BSD compatible UPS let me know. Note that all prices include GST but exclude shipping. Effective advocacy.
by Greig McGill 08 Mar '05

08 Mar '05

Hi WLUGers. I realise, as displayed at the last LUG meeting, that most of you read slashdot. :) Even so, I'd like to ensure that all of you have read the O'Reilly article on effective advocacy. Advocacy is something that is very important to me, and our WLUG Charter also lists it as one of the core goals of our group. http://www.linuxdevcenter.com/pub/a/linux/2005/03/03/advocacy.html I think we have been doing well lately to be taken reasonably seriously as a LUG, and I'd like to continue this trend. One thing which I perceive to be damaging to our credibility is people at meetings asking "questions" which are little more than excuses to rant about how Microsoft ate their baby/killed their cat/defiled their church/whatever. I don't like Microsoft. I've never liked them, even before they adopted their extremely aggressive and monopolistic business practices. That said, calling them evil, and frothing at the mouth to people who can't do anything about it, does absolutely nothing to help the situation. It only serves to weaken the perception of the WLUG as a credible entity. Jokes are fine. I like jokes. Just remember that nobody likes to listen to a zealot (think of the mad bible bashers in Garden Place...), and "being that guy" will never get you taken seriously. This is as close to official as I like to get, so please take it on board. Your funloving, but slightly frustrated President, Greig McGill.

Its not just that, it's users having to wade through copious quantities of emails. I get enough without getting duplicates! All I can say is thank god for filtering. Cheers... david -----Original Message----- From: Daniel Lawson [mailto:daniel(a)meta.net.nz] Sent: Wednesday, 2 March 2005 11:53 am Subject: Re: [wlug] WLUG Meeting was last night Just to follow this point up, this point seems like it might have a bigger impact if we still lived in the days where you were changed $30/MB for email. Data is basically flatrate, so sending lots of emails doesn't matter any more. However, spam and virus scanning isn't cheap. I've seen threads on mailing lists CC'd to 6 lists members and the list itself. That's another 6 passes through spam and virus scanning processes. Unless spamassassin etc are smart enough to do duplicate suppression themselves - anyone have any idea if that's the case? _______________________________________________ wlug mailing list | wlug(a)list.waikato.ac.nz Unsubscribe: http://list.waikato.ac.nz/mailman/listinfo/wlug

Hypervisor and IBM's open source
by Ian McDonald 28 Feb '05

28 Feb '05

Found the article mentioned last night - was as CNet not Slashdot... It's not the full Hypervisor - parts of it IBM throws weight behind multi-OS push By Stephen Shankland http://news.com.com/IBM+throws+weight+behind+multi-OS+push/2100-1016_3-5588… Story last modified Thu Feb 24 04:00:00 PST 2005 IBM has quietly added a new option to the suddenly vogue market for "hypervisor" software that lets a computer run multiple operating systems simultaneously, CNET News.com has learned. But Big Blue's efforts aren't likely to squash a potential rival just flexing its muscles. IBM has released source code for its Research Hypervisor, or rHype, on its Web site, letting anyone examine the approach of a company renowned for its expertise in the field. One distinguishing feature: rHype works with multiple processor varieties, including IBM's Power family, widely used x86 chips such as Intel's Xeon, and the new Cell microprocessor codeveloped by IBM, Sony and Toshiba. News.context What's new: Big Blue quietly enters the noisy market for "hypervisor" software, which lets a computer run multiple operating systems simultaneously. Bottom line: Considering its open-source nature and IBM's actions so far, rHype is more likely to be a help than a hindrance to a competing project called Xen. More stories on hypervisor The project potentially competes with two commercial products--Microsoft's Virtual Server and EMC's VMware--and with the open-source Xen software that has attracted support from numerous computing heavyweights. But given rHype's open-source nature and IBM's actions so far, rHype is more likely to be a help than a hindrance to Xen. Specifically, it could help Xen move from its current base of x86 chips to IBM's Power. "We've spent quite some time talking to its authors," Xen founder Ian Pratt said. "Now that the rHype code is open source, it's a great starting point for a port of Xen to Power." The rHype software may be incorporated directly into Xen because both packages are governed by the General Public License (GPL), Pratt said. And IBM isn't shying away: Its programmers have been contributing to the Xen project. It makes sense for IBM to help Xen, said Charles King, principal analyst of Pund-IT Research. "It sounds like a natural point of intersection, given IBM's natural interest in open source and in virtualization," King said. IBM is the 800-pound gorilla when it comes to hypervisor software, which it has supported for decades on its mainframes and has brought to its Power-based Unix servers. But for x86 servers, IBM chose a partnership with VMware rather than bring its own technology to market. IBM declined to comment on most details of rHype. However, Tom Bradicich, chief technology officer for IBM's Intel-based xSeries server line, said Tuesday that it's not likely IBM will turn rHype into a product. "It's in the realm of the possible, but we don't foresee it at this time," Bradicich said. IBM has used rHype to aid three internal projects. One is sHype, the Secure Hypervisor project to build barriers between different virtual machines. Another is validating features of the Cell processor, which has nine separate processing cores. And a third is an IBM supercomputing project called PERCS (Productive, Easy-to-use, Reliable Computing System). Hypervisor hype A hypervisor--a term IBM is trying to trademark--is basic software that runs atop the processor, allocating resources such as processing power, memory and network links. By creating virtual connections to these resources--"virtualizing" them--the hypervisor provides a flexible foundation that can let a computer run multiple operating systems and thus multiple tasks more efficiently. Juggling numerous tasks has long been a useful ability for corporate computing centers. Now such abilities are increasingly useful at home as computer networks get more complex and useful, King said. "It's fascinating to me that something that's been seen as a benefit for enterprise data centers is percolating its way down into the set-top box," King said. The rHype software virtualizes only some resources, which makes it fall into the same "paravirtualization" category as the Xen hypervisor project. IBM developed security software called sHype on the rHype software, but in January it pledged to create a version that will work with Xen. Among features IBM touts with rHype: • A design that can handle sophisticated memory tasks and that works well with high-speed cache memory. • Support for IBM's open-source K42 operating system for multiprocessor servers. • The ability to run on several processor simulators, including the "Mambo" simulator of IBM's PowerPC 970 family of processors, the general-purpose QEMU simulator and the BOCHS x86 simulator. rHype also has run on VMware. • Interfaces to use the software on servers with multiple processors and with multithreaded processors--those that can execute multiple simultaneous instruction sequences. Divide and conquer Xen and rHype contrast with virtual machine software such as VMware and Virtual Server, which employ full virtualization. That means an operating system doesn't need to be modified, as generally is the case with paravirtualization today, but runs more slowly. There are other ways of dividing a system so it can run multiple operating systems. Some higher-end IBM Intel servers have hardware-based partitions. And Linux-Vserver, SW-soft's Virtuozzo and Solaris containers divides a single instance of an operating system so it appears that separate users have their own copies. In addition to the rHype project, IBM has a commercial hypervisor running on machines that use its Power processors. Because rHype uses the same interfaces as the commercial hypervisor, Linux doesn't have to be modified to run on an rHype-Power foundation. With rHype on x86 chips, Linux must be modified to work. IBM isn't the only company interested in helping Xen grow beyond x86 servers. Hewlett-Packard programmers have been working on Xen for computers using Intel's Itanium 2 processor. Although IBM is sharing the source code underlying the rHype project, it currently isn't accepting modifications from outsiders.

As I mentioned last night at meeting... Can't find reference to Hypervisor here but will post if I find it.... IBM Helps Drive Open Source Development; New Resources Help Developers Build Skills around New Software Technologies Business Editors/Technology Writers SOMERS, N.Y.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Feb. 25, 2005--IBM today contributed more than 30 open source projects to SourceForge.net and launched new online skills-building programs to spur innovation, collaboration and development around emerging open source projects. Additionally, IBM today announced it is extending support for developers building Web applications using PHP, a popular open source Web development language. Through a new business partnership and new skill-building resources, IBM will help developers use PHP as part of their Web services and services oriented architectures (SOA). More than 30 IBM software projects will by hosted by SourceForge.net to give developers broader access to open source technologies. SourceForge.net, part of the OSTG Network, is the world's largest collaborative development site, with more than one million registered users and 96,000 projects. As a result, more developers can collaborate and build upon technologies spanning Java, Linux and wireless, fueling more innovation to drive next-generation software applications. The projects include IBM's Jikes(TM) software, a fast Java(TM) compiler that helps developers speed their development time, and the Life Science Identifier, which helps developers in healthcare build life sciences applications by automatically scanning networks for biologically significant data. With today's announcement IBM is also expanding its developerWorks Web site, launching new skills-building resources to help developers more rapidly build solutions based on emerging open source technologies, such as PHP. IBM developerWorks (ibm.com/developerWorks) is IBM's growing online developer community with more than 4.5 million registered users. The site offers tools and education to help developers build and deploy applications across heterogeneous systems. In conjunction with the partnership announced today between IBM and Zend Technologies, IBM launched a new section on IBM developerWorks devoted to PHP. The new PHP section features technical articles, tutorials and forums to drive further skills and development of PHP, which currently accounts for more than 40 percent of the overall Web programming language market. IBM and Zend Technologies are working together to develop integrated software based on PHP using IBM's Cloudscape database. In August, IBM offered "Derby," a copy of Cloudscape to the Apache Software Foundation to spur more collaborative innovation for software application development. IBM and Zend Technologies plan to offer their integrated software to developers on IBM developerWorks in the second quarter of 2005. "The momentum of open source and its adoption by governments and businesses worldwide points to the increasingly critical role of the software developer within business," said Gina Poole, vice president of developer relations, IBM. "Organizations looking for innovative software applications to drive their business projects are looking for developers with the tools and skills of tomorrow - based on open technologies." Other resources on IBM developerWorks to help open source developers include: -- Open source special topic sections for a broad range of emerging open source projects such as Apache Derby, Eclipse, Globus, Linux and PHP, providing access to hundreds of technical articles, tutorials, forums and blogs -- Plug-ins, along with technical articles and demonstrations, to help developers streamline their Apache Derby database development leveraging the Eclipse environment, helping developers reap more value out of these growing open source projects -- The IBM Linux Software Evaluation Kit, with triple the amount of complimentary trial software available to developers looking to build, run, manage and deploy using IBM software running on Linux. For the first time, IBM Rational software development tools for Linux will be included. IBM Rational tools can help organizations more rapidly build applications on Linux. IBM has contributed more than 120 collaborative projects to the open source community, helping drive innovation with projects such as Eclipse, Derby and Globus. IBM also recently pledged 500 patents into a "patent commons" to help drive innovation and future software development. Beginning March 1, IBM will also launch a series of technical briefings to help developers migrate to and develop new applications on Linux. Part of IBM's developerWorks Live! Technical Briefings, the complimentary Linux briefings will run in Bangkok, Chicago, Kuala Lampur, Los Angeles, Manila, San Francisco, Washington DC and more. About OSTG, Inc. I got this piece of information from my usergroup back home. Could helpful for us ? <quote> The Feb 05 issue of Linux Format (LF) has an announcement that they will ship a box of Linux technical books (and some software) to LUGs that send information about themselves to LF - and LF will include information about the LUG in a future magazine - the offer is open to LUGs overseas. They are interested in about 200 words on the user group, and if possible include a photo of a meeting or event (kind of hard to do with a virtual group though). LF will also announce future events by the LUGs in future editions of the magazine, if they receive the information early enough. The offer for free technical documentation is good while the books last. Anyone else had problems with this update? Following last night's update to this version, GRUB no longer boots. Screen says "GRUB" and goes no further. I suspect that the boot sector on the slave drive has been modified ... the windows loader runs a copy of the that sector (copied following the upgrade to Fedora Core 2). Hi I'm trying to set up a pop server using qmail and vpopmail on my gentoo box. I've never set up a mail server before so I followed the howto on the gentoo home page. After setting up qmail I sent test emails and was able to retrieve them with mutt, I then set up vpopmail as per the instructions and then tested using kmail and got the following error - Could not read file The server said: "Can't open the message file - it's gone!". The status bar says there are 11 messages and this number increases to correspond with the number of test emails i send, but i am unable to view the messages. Anyone got any ideas what could be up?? I have emailed the writer of the how to and will post any reply I get Troy

Degree character
by Lindsay 14 Feb '05

14 Feb '05

I cant get a degree character in Evolution Mail in Ubuntu. I guess Evolution is on other distro's too, so does anyone have an idea? In WinXP it was Alt+0186 or select a Font in Character Map. But I'm afraid Character Map in Ubuntu in all Fonts seems to give only A-Z 0-9. Linz

Old PC
by Lindsay 13 Feb '05

13 Feb '05

Craig, Finally got around to using the old PC I picked up - and again thanks. It booted up nicely and I cleaned up the HDD, taking off all the legal programs a student had obviously used it for. Did a defrag and planned to boot up again later to partition and so on, and Ubuntu. On reboot, everything was dead. I don't know, maybe power-pack died or something. A technician friend is coming up to stay in a couple of weeks from Wellington, so we are going have a gander at it them. He is going to put Ubuntu on his Win98 machine at the same time. Cheers, Lindsay R

Not getting mail from non-default ISP's-newbie question
by Lindsay 06 Feb '05

06 Feb '05

I am connected to my default ISP by DSL and all is ok there. I cannot however receive mail from my other ISP's via the DSL as I could through Windows. I think it is something to do with the settings in Tools, Settings, Mail Accounts, Edit, Receiving Mail, Authenitication Type (which in Windows was Password). There seems to be no place where I can enter or edit individual ISP passwords. How is that done please. Linz

WLUG Meeting is tonight
by Meeting Reminder bot 31 Jan '05

31 Jan '05

The WLUG meeting is this evening ---------------------------------------------------------------------- !!Special meeting: "Exim and PCRE: How free software hijacked my life" The WaikatoLinuxUsersGroup are pleased to announce that Philip Hazel, primary author of the [Exim] mail transfer agent and the pcre(7) library, will be presenting an open talk to its members and guests on Tuesday, 1 February. The talk is entitled "Exim and PCRE: How free software hijacked my life". Philip will present a non-technical talk on the history of the Exim and PCRE software projects, how they got started, where they are now, and where they are currently going. The meeting will start at 7:30pm, in the [LitB] building at WaikatoUniversity. All are welcome. Tea/coffee/biscuits/juice will be provided afterwards. Thanks to Philip Hazel for agreeing to take the time to present this meeting, to the [NZNOG] conference for sponsoring Philip's trip to NZ and to Jamie Curtis for organising the meeting. !About the presenter Philip Hazel grew up in South Africa. He has a PhD in applied mathematics, and has spent the last 30 years writing general-purpose software for the Computing Service at the University of Cambridge in England. Some major projects were text editors and text formatters for use on an IBM mainframe system. Since moving from the mainframe to Unix around 1990, he has become more and more involved with email. This lead to his starting to develop Exim in 1995, and the PCRE regular expression library two years later. These open source projects have both turned out to be larger and more successful that expected. Outside interests include classical music (as a choral singer and late convert to viola playing), music typsetting, working backstage in amateur theatre, and finding nice places to go walking, preferably not as flat as Cambridgeshire. Philip is married, and has three grown-up sons.

newbie C++ query <iostream.h>
by Jodi Anderson 28 Jan '05

28 Jan '05

I've been teaching myself C++ lately and have been compiling at home on a RH6.1 box which has libstdc++ 2.9.0 The tutorials I have been using say to include <iostream.h> and cin/cout for standard input/output. I'm back at work after leave and am continuing my learnings now compiling on FC3 with libstdc++ 3.4.2 which gives me warnings about using depreciated headers with iostream.h. So I do what it says and remove the .h. This kicks back errors telling me that 'cin/cout is undeclared in function xyz A bit of a google and I find a page which says to add 'std::' to the cin/cout. I do this and things compiles fine. However I can't seem to find any info as to whether I need to add this all the time using the later libraries, or whether there is something extra I need to add/include in the source files So to cut a long story short my question is: do I continue using std::cin/cout? Or is there something else I need to include? Cheers Jodi -- ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Jodi W. Yeah for the HAL and D-Bus....
by Oliver Jones 28 Jan '05

28 Jan '05

Sometimes Linux does thinks properly... With little prodding, poking or frucking about. I like it when it does. It makes for a nice change. I'm at my brothers place in Sydney and I plugged in his Epson Stylus C43UX USB printer. I was expecting to have to go into the Printer Config app and hopefully find a driver that would work and hopefully get it going. I plugged it in, and within a couple seconds a window appeared on my screen asking me to choose a driver as the PC couldn't find an exact match. It had highlighted Epson Stylus C42UX driver (the closest match). I clicked OK as there wasn't a better alternative. I went into the RedHat/Fedora printer config applet and checked the driver settings. Nothing out of the ordinary. Cups has just successfully printed a test page. I'm quite impressed. This is what we want. Project Utopia is starting to make its mark. HAL and D-Bus are going to make Linux a much more user friendly system. Both Gnome and KDE will benefit too. The wait however, is intolerable. I want it now damn it... :) Now if I could only figure out why Evolution crashes whenever I try and add words to my dictionary. My aim is to learn how to use Linux. I am working through the RHCT course content topic list, gettting the info from the RedHat 9 Bible. However I feel like a blind man tapping around with a white stick. I am using it because it is a structured course from which I can learn how to use Linux. Is anybody a RH Certified Technician or had experience with the training course for this qualification? I need some advice/guidance on what I should be doing.

Welcome back Hoiho & some administrivia
by Craig Box 24 Jan '05

24 Jan '05

Hi everyone, I'd just like to take a moment to thank everyone that helped, especially Perry and John, for their hard work in getting Hoiho rebuilt and back online in just two days. All services should now be back up, and if anything is broken please let us know. If you're having trouble logging in, it's probably because we've got passworded authentication disabled, and are only allowing SSH keys. Email sysadmin(a)wlug.org.nz if you need more information or need a key loaded on. The good news however is the wiki is back online! This means that the minutes from the last committee meeting are up at http://www.wlug.org.nz/CommitteeMeetingTopics.2005-01-19. Also, we are looking at formulating questions for Government departments, as per Rodney Hide's visit last year: please check out the http://www.wlug.org.nz/ParliamentaryQuestions page again, and lend a hand at tidying it up a little if you can. We will then run them past Rodney and await further instructions. Craig

Hoiho
by Perry Lorier 24 Jan '05

24 Jan '05

We have reason to believe that the hoiho server (www.wlug.org.nz) may have been compromised. The machine has been shutdown pending an audit and probably a reinstall (to be on the safe side). The kiddie suspected of targetting this machine is well known for using password sniffers and other attacks to leverage accounts on other machines. If you have an account on hoiho (including a mail account) then I suggest that you change your password on any related machine immediately. Hopefully the kiddie hasn't successfully compromised the machine, but we're not taking any chances. The wiki will be offline until further notice. Sorry for any inconvenience, Perry Lorier

WLUG meeting tomorrow (Monday)
by Craig Box 24 Jan '05

24 Jan '05

In the absence of a server: There will be a WLUG meeting tomorrow (Monday 24 Jan, 2005), at 7:30pm in LitB, at the University of Waikato. Park at Gate 1 and walk up past the satellite dishes. The topic is "Open Source Music Notation applications". John McPherson will give a presentation about Linux/OpenSource applications for music performers and composers. This will probably cover "mature" applications for things like sequencing, composition, and notation programs, as well as other things that are more "research-y" and not in widespread use, such as page-turning for performers, and optical music recognition.

library books/cdroms
by John R. McPherson 17 Jan '05

17 Jan '05

Hi everyone, just a general reminder that WLUG has a bunch of books and cdroms to lend out to paid-up WLUG members. We've recently received a few review copies of new books, so feel free to borrow any and post a review of it onto the wlug website. http://library.wlug.org.nz/show.pl?recent=10 There's a meeting next Monday so we can arrange to bring any requested books along (and if you have an issued item this would be a good opportunity to return it). Lastly, we can ask for more review copies of things if people request them. If you would like us to acquire something, go to the http://www.wlug.org.nz/WantedBooks wiki page and feel free to edit it, adding the publisher, book name, and your name in the appropriate place. Hi The site is very specific about shipment times and release times and they document this well. The orders it seems are processed in South Africa and shipped from Switzerland (well mine was, but it is a small world anyway). Mine took a while (about 6 weeks), but I am sure the Xmas rush is to blame. The balance of the CDs I will try to get to the next meeting and whoever wants can grab. Configuring konqueror/kate in KDE
by Glenn Ramsey 13 Jan '05

13 Jan '05

Hi, I have a Debian machine and a Mandrake machine both running KDE. I have configured the default text editor on both to be kate so that if I double click a file in konqueror it opens in kate. If I double click a second file in konqueror then on the Debian box it opens as another tab in the already running instance of kate, but on the Mandrake box it opens in a new instance of kate. How do I configure the Mandrake box to act like the Debian box? Ie a subsequent file is opened in an already running instance of kate if one exists. g -- Glenn Ramsey <glenn(a)componic.co.nz> 07 8627077 http://www.componic.co.nz

Converting Video Formats
by Gund Wehsling 11 Jan '05

11 Jan '05

Hi First off, welcome to 2005. Next, has anybody had any fun converting media in Linux (or W32 for that matter)? I have several AVi files (in DV1 format) that have been ripped from my old and dying camera and I have now many Gigs of AVIs I would like to make into MPEGs or similar, if for no reason other than to reduce thier size. I have tried some W32 applications that do not preserve the quality or even the size of the videos and after a few weeks, I have come to the conclusion, that not even paid for software is good for me. Any ideas for Linux or W32 greatly appreciated. Rgds Gund

fresh new kernel installation
by SnapafunFrank 06 Jan '05

06 Jan '05

Finding it difficult to find someone with the patience to help with this so thought I would try local talent: In the past, whenever I wanted to compile a `new` kernel, I would first up do: # urpmi kernel-source-2.6-n Then do: # urpmi kernel The kernels were not the latest release and of course rpm's were available. Because of my usb concerns I thought I would `install` kernel-2.6-10 - knowing I would have to compile from linux-2.6.10.tar.bz2. So first thing, read the README at least, and straight off I'm lost, though later it looks like my usual one step at a time approach will get there. Here's were I'm lost: "- If you install the full sources, put the kernel tarball in a directory where you have permissions (eg. your home directory) and unpack it" OK - no prob with that. "Do NOT use the /usr/src/linux area! " Again, no prob, sort of covered that, I thought. "- Make sure you have no stale .o files and dependencies lying around: cd linux make mrproper You should now have the sources correctly installed." Huh! But I've only unpacked the bz2 file into my home directory - how can anything be installed at this point? Just in case I'm having a braindead week : "BUILD directory for the kernel: When compiling the kernel all output files will per default be stored together with the kernel source code. **[ Fair enough ]** Using the option "make O=output/dir" allow you to specify an alternate place for the output files (including .config). Example: kernel source code: /usr/src/linux-2.6.N build directory: /home/name/build/kernel ** [ Possibly not something I might require but better remember, just in case ] ** To configure and build the kernel use: cd /usr/src/linux-2.6.N ** WOAH - WAIT UP- where in blue blazes did the directory /usr/src/linux-2.6.N come from - yes. I have directories for previous versions here but certainly not this one yet. So right now I have the bz2 file in my /home/frank/src/ directory, have it unpacked and I thought ready to go????? So I go back and re-read things and find: " If you install the full sources..... " Right back at the beginning. The only file I have found is the bz2 file, how can I have already installed the full sources. I thought they were part and parcel of the bz2 file and as yet had to be installed. Lost - braindead - BOTH. Any one want to do the rear seat kicking here? -- Newbie Seeking USER_FUNCTIONALITY always! DVD playback under linux
by Daniel Lawson 04 Jan '05

04 Jan '05

Santa was nice to me this year and gave me a Pioneer DVR-108 for christmas. After installing this into my gentoo box, I was fairly happy to see that I could run gmplayer dvd:// And have it start playing the dvd. However, it appears that mplayer isn't so good at playing the root menu. After some discussion on IRC, totem was suggested. I'd never really liked totem, and had found mplayer a much better player, but I tried it. Currently it seems that DVD playback with the gstreamer backed to totem is dead. http://bugs.gentoo.org/show_bug.cgi?id=71519 implies rebuilding totem without gstreamer support should do the job, but that seems tedious. Does anyone have any experience with DVD playback under linux? (distro agnostic, I'd just like to see what software/versions people are using) Daniel PS: Happy New Year - was going to claim FP for 2005 but I see Perry was posting at 3am.

No Sound with Totem-Xine
by Nigel Nguyen 02 Jan '05

Hi all, have any body experienced with No-Sound Xine ? I have just install xine & totem-xine on my ubuntu. However, when I play a .asf file the weird thing happen: the pictures is excellent but there is no sound at all (even though, the system sounds is loud and clear) both in xine & totem-xine. As suggestion on the internet I try to pass option in .totem_config & .xine/config to enable alsa driver, but so far no help. When I tried switch back to totem-gstreamer with gstreamer-ffmpeg, the file is playing with sound and pictures is good for the 15sec then, the sound start sluggish... & I don't like gstreamer backend. Any idea to fix the problem ? Thanks lots, Nigel

Linux greeny
by Judy & Lindsay Roberts 29 Dec '04

29 Dec '04

I started with computers in 1980. DOS was an infant at the time. I started to develop software at the time using Basic, progressed to QuickBasic and now VisualBasic. About four years ago, I put a version of Mandrake Linux on a Windows ME computer. Every knows that ME was a 'virus' of a system. About a month after putting a Linux partition on it, I got a warning that an error had occurred in Linux which could destroy my Windows partition. This had happened several times before and nothing happened when I told it to continue. Bad move. It destroyed my HDD entirely. Since then my wife has said no more Linux on your computers. I recently hunted for a LIVE CD version of Linux and now have two. Mandrake Move - which looks really good, and Ubuntu Live, which is also great, but can access the HDD and has already changed my screen setting from 75hz to 60 and I cant change it back. I think I'll go with the Mandrake - but - I cant get it to recognize my 56k internal Modem now my USB printer. It wont write to the USB memory stick either although it has located it. Someone gave me some instructions for finding my modem, but I'm afraid I was too 'green' to go into action. I'm going to need a 'pictured painted' for me on this. However, if I cant get the setting written to the memory stick, what is the point in trying to use the system? I will have to put in my system and internet settings each time it loads. Not practical! I've installed ubuntu before... Very nice and easy to do. As I said if you want a copy of the latest install cd instead of mucking around yourself (why is it 2 files anyway? I just got a single iso file off linuxisos.org) drop me a line. The install is incredibly easy, it's virtually insert cd and leave running. If you want advice or help, I can give some limited help (still learning myself), but I'm more than willing. I suggest you check out some of the reviews that are around to find out about ubuntus little quirks. Ubuntu is based on the debian unstable release, and the code is tweaked a bit to be (of course) more stable. New updates are released every six months. I eventually swapped to suse for various reasons, but plan on installing ubuntu on my next machine. Mandrake Move setup
by Judy & Lindsay Roberts 22 Dec '04

22 Dec '04

I am trying to set up Mandrake Move (Live CD). Several things I dont seem to be unable to accomplish at this stage. 1) Cant set up an Internet connection. I have used the default selections (selected radio buttons). I have an IHUG account for the purpose. I had difficulty finding out where my modem was attached (Windows says Com3). I get this error message 'An unexpected error has happened: output in file /usr/share/config/Kppprc failed: read only file system.' 2) My USB Key is connected, but cant seem to save settings to that at present. It shows up in Konquerer but not in the File Manager (Ksomething or the other). In Konquerer, it will not permit me to copy files from Key to Floppy. Does floppy have to be formatted in special format for that? Konquerer reads the floppy formatted in Dos ok, for I put some text files on it to test. Thats enough for one day I think. Cheers Linz

Modem for Linux
by lilypatc＠ihug.co.nz 21 Dec '04

21 Dec '04

Hi all I haven't been in touch since the installfest in may? Working all hours and Linux has taken a back seat. I have just got a modem going in the Linux box, Not counting the slow machine with a hardware ISA modem that I took to work for check E-mail at night, Don't want pirate windows in case Micro$oft did an audit so it has Mandrake 10. Showed the other techs that it not so different to windows to use in GUI. Anyway the modem I found is a Pragmatic FMI-IA56 which uses an Intel 536 chipset which Intel suply driver for Linux for, including some precompiled drivers for Mandrake 10 and some other popular distros. They seem to work OK for Mandrake 10. It is a V92 hardware mode (HCF) not the old driverless hardware type. I did have it run a little eratic but the instructions mentioned a reset command "AT&F" which seems to have sorted it. Hope someone finds it usefull Regards David Bowen

Re: [wlug] Linux LVM and Windows.
by Stephen Pearce 19 Dec '04

19 Dec '04

Hi, I had the same problem ... with fedora 2. I ended up doing away with LVM. As I understand it is only useful if you are likely to fill your partitions and need to resize them. I thought this might be useful initially, but as I don't create many huge files, I don't think I would ever use it even if I could get it working. When I looked into it they were doing a major change in the code .. it might be simpler now .. I've forgotten it and not regretted it. NexStar external 3.5" USB2/Firewire HDD enclosures and FC3.
by Oliver Jones 19 Dec '04

19 Dec '04

Hi Folks. Thought I'd share a little tidbit of experience with you all. Recently I purchased a Vantec NexStar external USB2/Firewire 3.5" HDD enclosure. I had an existing 200GB Seagate Barracuda drive to put in it. Today I assembled the unit and plugged it into my Fedora Core 3 powered Compaq laptop. I was rather pleased to see FC3 detect the device, amend /etc/fstab, mount it, and put a nice little media icon on my desktop with a USB logo on it. It even did so when the HDD was formatted with NTFS. I subsequently deleted the NTFS partition that was on the drive and reformatted with FAT32 so that I can share the device more easily between Windows and Linux machines. I did the partitioning and formatting under Linux as Windows XP (in its infinite wisdom) can not create FAT32 partitions greater than 30GB. All in all the experience was quite nice. Certainly nicer than my past experiences with USB storage devices under Linux. Unfortunately when I switched cables to Firewire (IEEE1394) things didn't go so smoothly. The Linux ieee1394 driver can't seem to communicate with the device. Something about being unable to parse the configrom. This isn't the only firewire device that this Laptop hasn't been able to talk to under Linux. So I imagine it is some driver issue with whatever chipset that this laptop has. I've never had much luck with firewire and Linux. But I don't mind. This laptop has 3 USB 2 ports and USB is "fast enough" for storing my iTunes/iPod music and other backup/archive data. Linux LVM and Windows.
by Oliver Jones 19 Dec '04

19 Dec '04

On my laptop I've installed Fedora Core 3. By default FC3 uses Linux LVM for the install partitions and swap. It only puts /boot on a separate "Linux native" partition. I also have Windows XP installed on my laptop in a 20GB partition at the front of the drive (hda1). When I booted Windows today (a rarity) I noticed that the LVM partition is showing up as a drive letter in Windows. The disk manager doesn't show it with a file system but I am concerned Windows XP will do something stupid and try and write to the device at some point and fruck my Linux install. Does anyone else have experience with Windows XP and Linux LVM? How can I hide the LVM drive from Windows. Is there a way of telling Windows the get the hell away from that partition? I've never used LVM before so I'm in the dark a bit. Any help would be appreciated. Regards -- Oliver Jones <oliver(a)deeper.co.nz> Deeper Design Limited

Python and recording audio
by zcat 16 Dec '04

I'm trying to write a program in python but I am _very_ confused about how to set audio parameters. I can find documentation but it doesn't make any sense. I can't seem to find an example anywhere that I can follow. In the past I've just used /dev/dsp with the default settings of 8 bit mono, 8k samplerate. This time I want to record 16 bit, two channels, 44k1, splitting the recording into left.wav and right.wav and stripping out silence in realtime. How do I do it?

Hi, Sorry about the lack of detail. It is an external model on COM port 1 (ttyS0) and I have tried a couple. The one I am using at present is a dynalink one. I have tried configuring it using the Network Configuration tool and while it appears that I have been able to activate the PPP link, I don't think it has in reality. In defence of Fedora
by Craig Box 01 Dec '04

01 Dec '04

Hi everyone, The current distro that the WLUG Committee recommend our new users run is Fedora. Mandrake is possibly a 'simpler' distribution, but most of the people who come to help out and post to the mailing list don't run it. In fact, a lot of them don't run Fedora either, but know enough about it to be helpful. If there is enough of a groundswell of people using Mandrake who have learnt it through to expert level and are prepared to help other people, we'd be happier about recommending it. Right now, it's out there, it might suit peoples needs better, but as a club, we can't necessarily help you with it. Fedora is a good combination of useful to new user, well supported, powerful and up to date. Ubuntu is another distribution that fits that bill. Mandrake might be, but I don't know enough to make that call. With regard to yum especially, yum 2.2 in Fedora Core 3 addresses lots of the shortfauls in yum 2.0 (it now has .repo files, which are more like apt's Packages/Releases, instead of thousands of little .hdr files). Perhaps this discussion could be held at http://www.wlug.org.nz/SelectingADistribution which needs an overhaul. We could also perhaps have a list of the top 10 things that are different in each distro (ie how to get security updates, how to get MP3 playback, how to configure your network card). Giving up on the list isn't a good way to stop other people from having problems. Remember also we're more than happy to look at machines at LUG meetings. Just let us know in advance if you need an internet connection so we can arrange one. Craig

Hi All, I did make sure that I had a good repo and plenty of mirrors then "yum update" There were 54 items to d/load. at the 11th file, some three hours later (at 47k), a thing called "gzip" failed to down load so it tried mirror after mirror very slowly. Failing on each occasion. I think it was at the fourteenth unsuccessful mirror attempt that I began cutting 25mm lengths off the modem cord. The mirror sites then went by much more quickly as they were unable to connect. The success in this is that there were TONNES of mirrors to try if only I had waited a couple more days things may have been OK and I could have got on with updating yum and possibly installing mplayer. I am finding Fedora to be bad for my self esteem and I note with horror that I have forced myself into the position of the official "idiot question asker". To this end I am unsubscribing from the mailing list so as not to broadcast my ineptitude to all and sundry when doing fubars in the future. The distro that has given me the least grief is "Mandrake"> (yep. Windows user) If any one is willing to burn me a good copy of the latest issue I would be happy if they would contact me off list. Many thanks to all the list members. Regards John. > A bad checksum probably means the file corrupted while you > were downloading it. Acceptable use of the WLUG Mailing List
by Meeting Reminder bot 30 Nov '04

30 Nov '04

The WLUG mailing list is the discussion-list extension of the Waikato Linux Users Group. As such, we expect members of this list to adhere to the principles espoused in our official Charter[1], in particular, Rule 6, which covers the activities on this mailing list. While this is an Acceptable Use Policy, the WLUG committee do recognise the need for informal discussion among list members, and draconian administration is not the goal of this policy. Please keep in mind, however, that your comments to this list do represent the WLUG, and while it is good to be seen as an organisation with a sense of humour, some comments may do serious harm to our credibility as a serious advocate of GNU/Linux and all things Free Software/Open Source related. List discussion: * Should not commit slander or libel against any person or organisation * Should not be unprofessional or petty, especially with respect to the names of other software companies * Should not indulge in ad hominem attacks * Should not reproduce copyrighted material without permission from the copyright holder * Should not indulge in marketing or advertising, other than on a private sale basis, or advertising of jobs - which may be announced once only. * Should maintain a reasonable level of spelling and grammar * Should be honest * Should not promote or denigrate political, cultural, or religious views * Should not continue inflammatory or abusive threads * Should accentuate the positive, without hyperbole or blatant misrepresentation Posters who consistently violate these guidelines will be dealt with at the discretion of the List Maintainer. If you feel you have been unfairly dealt with, you have recourse to any member of the WLUG Committee[2]. [1] http://www.wlug.org.nz/WlugCharter [2] http://www.wlug.org.nz/WlugCommittee

Hi again, I have not managed to find an answer to this as yet, managed to get google down to six or so possibles. None of those seemed to match my problem. Buying Linux Books
by Gun Caundle 29 Nov '04

29 Nov '04

For what it is worth (and in this case quite a bit) I had a look at one our library books "How Linux Works" and thought that I would need to buy it and use for reference. John Mc said buying from O'Reilly's, members get a 20% discount. I checked Dymocks Auckand and they could get me one for $94.95 and would take 6-8 weeks to arrive from the US. So I ordered it from O'Reilly's website for $US30.36 (including discount) The only shipping option was DHL (courier) and it was not until I had given my credit card details and the invoice was created that I could see the shipping charge. $US31.60. Then I checked on Amazon (never a good move to check other prices after the tranaction has taken place). Below are the comparisons. Dymocks Auck $NZ94.95 + postage to me O'Reilly's $US30.36 book $US31.60 shipping (Supposedly 2 days but it hasn't arrived after 4 days) $NZ83.00 total Amazon $US25.05 Book $US11.98 Shipping (1-2 vweeks) $NZ37.03 Total

Greig, I think one of the dangers of using politician's (of any sway) is that they use infomation for political gain. I noticed the HomePage for www.wlug.org.nz changed recently. What's the story? A lot of the content on HomePage was fairly useful where it was - now I have to click through to WlugIntro to find it. I know I can move it back - but I'd rather not get into a edit/revert battle on that page.

I dont know perl, but I have done programming in the past and I have a few ideas that might help point your mind to a new train of thought. Using a basic sorting script (suitably altered to take account of the numeric data (e.g. sorted by number or ASCII code). Once the list is ordered, run the data through another loop that takes each piece of data (one subnet at a time) and compares it with the previous piece of data and if they are the same - remove one of the entries. Hope this helps. Nick

Assistance on nzip.meta.net.nz
by Drew Broadley 20 Nov '04

Hi all, I am in need of a single standalone perl script that will open a file with a list of all of the subnets (ordered and each subnet is on a newline) and then remove any overlapping, unneeded subnets and print the output to stdout. I am unable to figure this out for myself and have been trying for a while. My only results are of unoptimised code and isn't useful at all. Thanks in advance, Drew

Overlapping usage nonsense

Having got a network and Internet connection sharing set up (thanks Bruce), Xtra is now charging my family for "overlapping usage" via my Linux computer. (The Internet connection is on the family computer, with Windows XP professional.) Initially, web browsing at the same time as other family members was slow; now it seems to be normal dialup speed. Last night's presentation by Rodney Hide was a great success. Those expecting right wing propaganda were pleasantly surprised, and I believe we all learned a lot about the parliamentary process, and how to further our goals of Linux/OSS advocacy with Rodney's advice. For those who did not attend, a summary of Rodney's presentation is on the wiki at http://www.wlug.org.nz/ParliamentaryQuestions. Please read and contribute. A MASSIVE thank you to Steve Reeves, and the Computer Science department for sponsoring an "extra" meeting. This one was possibly the most worthwhile meeting we've had in terms of actually furthering the goals of our organisation, so thanks for helping to make it possible. Thanks again to all those who came, and thanks in advance to all those who contribute questions. Regards, Greig McGill President Waikato Linux Users Group Inc.

The Airport Extreme cards (what the 17" PB will have) are Broadcom based and the older Airport cards are Orinoco Silver/Gold hybrids. I don't know what Linux support is like for these but they're both common chipsets. I've had quite a few Macs over the years, got a G5 and an iBook currently, but I've never tried running Linux on them so I can't be much help there. As to Fink, I don't really use it but it is quite impressive what can be done with it. I once had KDE running on a rootless X11 server on the MacOS X desktop and all the applications I tried performed flawlessly. Matt Browne

Supporting Open Source software is one thing (perhaps the only one) that Rodney Hide and Nandor Tancos agree on - witness this press release from Nandor Tancos today. I don´t suppose you could get Nandor to come as well - think of the headlines in the local media ¨Open Source unites sworn enemies¨ ..... 15 November 2004 Cut costs at IT giants' expense, not students Green Tertiary Education and IT Spokesperson Nandor Tanczos is hailing Victoria University's move to open source servers and suggests that Waikato University look at following suit. Both varsities have announced today that they need to reduce costs, but while Vic is achieving this by moving its admin, finance and HR systems to servers running the open source software 'Red Hat Linux', Waikato is instead looking at reducing staff numbers by doing some jobs less often and reviewing student-staff ratios. "Congratulations to Victoria for choosing to balance their budget by reducing how much money they give to multinational corporations; Waikato should follow their example instead of compromising the quality of their students' education," said Nandor, who is a Waikato graduate and lives in Hamilton. "Waikato prides itself for being a hot bed of innovation, but this time Victoria are the ones using their imagination and lateral thinking to look at the overall picture. "Tertiary institutions nationwide should take note of Victoria's move. Open source is a cheaper option all round and the education sector making greater use of it would benefit institutions, their students and the local software industry." > _______________________________________________ > wlug mailing list | wlug(a)list.waikato.ac.nz > Unsubscribe: http://list.waikato.ac.nz/mailman/listinfo/wlug -- Roderick Aldridge <rod-a(a)hnpl.net> _______________________________________________ wlug mailing list | wlug(a)list.waikato.ac.nz Unsubscribe: http://list.waikato.ac.nz/mailman/listinfo/wlug

Linux on PPC (Macs)
by Oliver Jones 17 Nov '04

17 Nov '04

Anyone here used Linux on PowerPC systems? Ie, Macs. I'm tossing up whether to buy a PowerBook G4 17" vs a Dell Latitude D800 15.4". The Powerbook is only ~$900 more and has a bigger screen. And considering my business partners experience with his D800 I'm worried about stability/reliability. I've been an x86 user since the dawn of time but after using my Mothers iBook for a while I've come to appreciate the simplicity, reliability and attractiveness of Apple gear. From what I read on the net Linux PPC (Yellow Dog etc) is quite good. Not that much different from RedHat and such. I've been a long time RH/Fedora user so I'm most familiar with RPM based distros. And from what I can tell Mac-on-Linux is very good at running a virtual MacOS system (for iTunes or whatever). Anyone here have any experience to share? At $5000 a pop I'm concerned about making the wisest choice... Other than that, I'm just hoping everyone will bring a friend! :) Lit. B is not too big, but you raise a good point about the media. Anyone got any contacts at the Waikato Times? /me delegates... I think I should clarify, as I think my comments may have been misconstrued. I am pleased to see Greig try to raise the profile of open source with political parties. Rodney and Nandor (sorry if i spell either wrong) have both made comments regarding open source, and therefore are logical contacts. I am not keen to see the LUG as such become political. However when you consider the millions of dollars spent on software by Government departments, and the possible effects of Spam legislation, Software patents and the like, there are real issues to discuss with those who influence policy issues. This is not being political, but rather raising issues that will affect us all in the years ahead. Also Greig very wisely suggested making Open Source an election issue. During campaigns every political party will want to promote its ideas on IT, open source, software patents, using Open V Proprietary formats, Probe, UBS V Unbundling, On-Line services ... and so on. By hosting a panel of representatives of Political parties, each explaining their views on IT issues, We get the chance to make the issue one they have to think about. Also as we can put the questions to the panel, we get to control some of the debate and show that the lug can be professional. These sorts of things well done can influence how issues are dealt with by a Government. Lindsay Druett wrote: > That's a good point actually... > > Obviously it sounds like Gavin is keen to have this, but if you're > really keen, firstly, Di Yates is actually a family friend of ours, > and I'm quite happy to ask her if she can come to speak to us. One what subject? If she were the minister of IT or Communications or something, then yes it would be relevant. Dianne is a local MP not an expert in IT issues. We are still a lug, and there needs to be a linux relevant issue before we really want to get involved. > Also, a friend of mine, Colin Ranby is standing in the Piako district > for the Destiny party (I know, I know, ....), he has up until a couple > of months ago worked for TelstraClear, and has been involved with > Technology for a number of years and is actually very down to earth > and is a really good guy, I'm also quite happy to ask him if he would > do a presentation again on what? Colin is a really nice guy, we have even worked together both in Communications and in Politics, but again he is not a spokesperson for the party on IT policy, and as far as I recall was not using linux when we last spoke. I think Greig has managed to walk a fine line here, and I think he has handled it well. This is not promoting any political party, but hopefully allows us to cover some of the dangers of poorly considered legislation with a number of people. If it goes well, perhaps in the future a door may be open to do a wider appeal meeting that can raise the image of the LUG as well as promote sensible debate on the issues that as IT professionals most of us have to deal with. The Lug should not be politicized but should be active in promoting discussion and debate about issues in the IT and Open Source industries. And I think this is a good start. For that reason I applauded Greigs efforts. Anything that make policy makers consider open source is a good thing. Other than that I have no axe to grind one way or the other. And I want to keep it that way. I have stated this just to keep the comment focused, and to clarify my earlier post. and by way of disclaimer I have been an Act candidate in the past , as well as CHP spokesman on Telecommunications and IT but my concern here is not political but rather the LUG and issues relating to open source users. I leave it to you to support your own political party.

Extra Meeting - this thursday
by Greig McGill 14 Nov '04

14 Nov '04

Hi WLUG, and other interested parties. In an effort to step outside our little box, and to encourage members of the WLUG to consider the political aspects of Open Source, I have asked Rodney Hide to come and speak to us. He will be speaking this Thursday evening (the 18th) at 8pm at our usual meeting location - Lit.B. at the University of Waikato. A map is at: http://www.waikato.ac.nz/perl-bin/map/tt-map.pl?term=litb Mr. Hide is, as you will all be aware, the leader of the ACT party. He posts a regularly updated blog at http://www.rodneyhide.com, and he is all in favour of Open Source software. This meeting is open to all, so please, bring a friend. It'll be the least "geeky" meeting we are likely to have until Nandor Tanczos joins us sometime next year (yes, really - I like to hear both sides of an argument - how about you?) so you are welcome to bring people who may have been scared away by the more technical meetings. This is a great opportunity to get Linux and Open Source software in general into the list of campaign issues for the upcoming elections, so please, come along and show Mr. Hide that Linux and OSS matters to many people. In return, you will get a very lively speaker - I've had the pleasure of hearing Mr. Hide speak before, and I can't wait for a re-run! :) Forward this to all who might be interested. Regards, Greig McGill President Waikato Linux Users Group Inc.
