Microsoft and JBoss working together
by Ian McDonald 28 Sep '05

28 Sep '05

Quite an interesting article here: http://beta.news.com.com/Microsoft,+JBoss+link+server+software/2100-7344_3-… It goes further than I would have expected from Microsoft as it includes working together on Active Directory integration and allowing SQL Server to be a back end. Only question I have is how much will actually be open-source as the article says "most" JBoss software is LPGL.

Exim Install on Ubuntu
by Ivan Potgieter 27 Sep '05

27 Sep '05

Hello all, I've decided to install exim using Ubuntu's Synaptic Package Manager. When selecting some of the packages, some unexpected packages are marked for removal (see below). Marked for installation: exim4, exim4-config ==> automatically marked for removal: postfix, postfix-lts, ubuntu-base, anacron, at, lsb, mailx, mutt Can anyone explain why these are marked to be removed? Thanks, Ivan

Further to my post yesterday ... I pulled out the flash rom chip ... and removed the cmos battery ... left things for a few hours .. then reinstalled .. and it booted .. fine .. then reset it and the same problem recurred .. then reinstalled flash rom but left cmos battery bu out and left overnight .. .. it rebooted ok .. I wonder whether some of the memory in the flash rom has "gone stale" i.e. is returning equivocal logic values ... if so is this due to flash failure or the expected degradation of memory in a flash device after 4 years? Alternative is static damage at a gate level which is intermittantly casuing failure .. hdd seems to be reliable ... I plan to re flash the rom when I get home Stephen

Hi Same error, same conditions, Fedora core 4. Then lost control of keyboard ... .. could this be a virus using the recently identified hole in Firefox to download code to reprogram the flash rom? The alternative is a static spike which fried a whole lot of disparate systems .. would a hdd failure be consistant with being able to read to grub stage 2.? hopefully just corrupted the flash rom.. which might also be consistant with a wide range of disparate symptoms. I have a hdd partitioned for windows 98 and linux .. I could not get past the grub stage 2 phase .. and the keyboard would not respond to trying to "del" during boot to access the cmos ... so I reset the cmos on the motherboard (perhaps in retrospect ill advisedly ... it now gives a keyboard read error ..) if it is a fried motherboard .. does anyone have a k7s6a elite surplus/sale? It was thepccompany .. which of course is no longer! I'll have to pull it apart to see what processor and memory type it is .. unless someone knows. I have downloaded the firmware upgrade and plan to extract the flash rom and reprogram it in an eprom burner (if I can find one which suits the flash device en29f002t/5v challanging .. and frustrating symptoms! (I suppose it reflects crappy component tolerances .. maybe we should all buy pentioned servers as the engineering in these is a bit better) any new info appreciated Thanks Stephen

scanning for an IP address...
by Camster342 26 Sep '05

26 Sep '05

Does anyone know of a tool which will let me discover the IP address of my ADSL modem in this setup : LAN <----> switch <----> Linux Server <----> ADSL Modem My computer is in the LAN, the Linux server is a Debian Box with no monitor or keyboard, and the ADSL modem is a DLink 302G (the kind you get free with an Xtra connection). The Linux server has two network cards in it, one connected to the switch (eth0), and one connected straight to the modem(eth1). The ADSL modem has been configured into half-bridge mode as discussed on the wlug wiki page for it (http://wlug.org.nz/DSL-302G) which means the IP address that appears on the Linux box is the external IP address of the modem, or at least the last one that was used. Now the problem is, I want to update some configuration on the modem, but I cannot remember what the IP address for it is. All I remember was that I changed it from its default. Does anyone know of a command, presumably that I would run from the linux box that I can use to find out the IP address of the modem that I browse to, to configure it? -- Cameron

Devices, udev, device numbers
by Ian McDonald 23 Sep '05

23 Sep '05

Hi there, In the process of setting up webcams (and getting greatly frustrated) I have been using mknod to create device entries. This is something I'm not really familiar with and I have some questions. I am trying things at present and don't really know why I am typing stuff I find in Google! Questions: 1) How are major and minor device numbers assigned? e.g. a webpage will say type "mknod /dev/video0 c 81 0". I understand the syntax but why 81 and 0 for the major and minor numbers? 2) How do these devices you create interact with udev? Permissions and other things seem to disappear after a reboot. Should I be using udev instead of mknod? URLs to articles would be appreciated or just people's comments. I promise to Wiki what I find out as I have been doing for most of my discoveries... Ian

The company providing this is a Canadian Company that says: " We are here to support the Linux community at large so if there are people that need the disks for "test and experimentation" they can have them under our extended license. v4l question - /dev/video0
by Ian McDonald 22 Sep '05

22 Sep '05

Hi there, I'm trying to get a couple of webcams going in Linux. One is a firewire card and one is a USB. They are both loaded on my system and are partially usable (e.g. Firewire one works in Gnome Meeting). My question is how does /dev/video0 come into existence with video 4 linux (aka v4l)? I have tried using mknod and that can create it but it doesn't make it usable. I've hunted around the web heaps and not found much at all. Questions: - is there a magic step to create /dev/video0 automatically and I haven't set it up? - or is it that my drivers aren't really working well? Ian

802.11G Wireless Cardbus cards for sale
by Daniel Lawson 20 Sep '05

20 Sep '05

Hi, I recently acquired a bulk lot of brand new (shrinkwrapped) 802.11G Wireless cards through an auction. They caught my attention because the particular models were compatable with linux. They are DLink DWL-G630 cards, hardware revision D1, Firmware 4.10. They use the Atheros chipset, and are fairly easy to get to work in linux using a recent snapshot of the madwifi drivers. I'll provide some better notes on the wiki once I get time. I've got 5 for sale. I also have a pair of DLink DWL-G650+ cards, which I believe have an ACX chipset. Last time I tried to make an ACX chipset card work in linux, it didn't like me very much, but I've heard good things about getting the DWL-G650+ to work with the driver available from acx.sourceforge.net. They'll work fine in windows. If you'd like one of these, mail me offlist. Asking price is $35, and I can provide some limited support for getting them working. http://www.wlug.org.nz/GarageSale Daniel

Debian tips

Hi people. I've just leased a Debian server from Server Beach. I've managed to upgrade it from 3.0 to 3.1 and install a few apps I want to play with. However I'm a recovering RedHat user and therefore very green when it comes to Debian. ;) I would appreciate any sage advice/tips to help me transition from people (Daniel?, Perry?) who've made the switch before. Ubuntu said "Ack!!"
by jaytee＠clear.net.nz 16 Sep '05

Hey all I had a problem with the "simple" install of Ubuntu Hoary which I thought was due to me not paying attention to the partitioning thus not including a swap space. However I retried the install and paid attention to what happened. Almost at the end of an otherwise uneventful install the programme said: "Ack! something bad happened trying to recover". Sadly ths was not the case much custard was developed. I guess this is a (no cay)nown problem but i did not read about it yet in my limited experience. Regards John

Debian user defaults.

Does Debian 3.1 use the usual your uid is your gid standard?? The useradd tools seem to be creating users with their gid set to users(100). Is this normal? Political party responses to InternetNZ questions.
by Greig McGill 13 Sep '05

13 Sep '05

I find this fairly interesting. http://internetnz.net.nz/government/2005-survey.htm Basically (and obviously this is my opinion); National sucks (and I am a Nat supporter) Labour sucks ever so slightly less The Greens ROCK The other responding parties appear clueless (SURPRISE!). I assume, based on Rodney Hide's fairly passionate views on IT (which were closely aligned with the Greens views, strangely enough), that ACT do have a policy, and have simply not submitted it yet. Winston is most likely too busy digging dirt to be bothered filling out the questionnaire. I know it's a single issue, and shouldn't really form the basis of any intelligent persons vote, but I think it is concerning that neither of our two major parties "get it", and it is left to a party often written off as hopeless idealists to have the best, most progressive policy on ICT issues. Regards, Greig McGill

mythtv installation day?
by Justin Hyde 13 Sep '05

13 Sep '05

I am trying to install mythtv on my ubuntu box, but without success, so I need help! I propose a mythtv installation day/evening, but will require some experts to come and help us novels. Are there any locals willing to help and advise? Depending on numbers interested I can host this event at my place, plenty of tables, power points, bbq etc I am thinking of the weekend of the 8th/9th October as that is only a couple of days before my jetstream quota renews itself, so we can blitz the connection and only suffer dial up speeds briefly. Any goers? Cheers Justin Hyde

New Zealand Linux Wiki redesign
by Craig Box 05 Sep '05

05 Sep '05

The New Zealand Linux wiki is a frontend into the data of Waikato Linux Users Group wiki. It is designed to open the amazing resource of user contributed information to participation from members of other LUGs, and free software/open source users and supporters in New Zealand. After a somewhat shaky start, I'm pleased to announce a redesigned theme for the site, now live at http://wiki.linux.net.nz/. The theme is the handiwork of Craig Box and Simon Bridge, based on the WLUG theme by Matt & Kat Brown, and is the culmination of suggestion and assistance from both the NZLUG community and WLUG committee members. On behalf of the WLUG, I would like to thank: * Carlos Varela, media designer (http://www.carlosvarela.net/) for the kiwi-in-circle logo * Simon Bridge, for his co-ordination and design work on the redesign of the original green theme * The NZLUG community, for their suggestions and design ideas * Everyone else on all the mailing lists for their criticisms, complaints and eventual support :) Please check out the site - http://wiki.linux.net.nz/ - now with a redesigned front page and new look. Remember, all content on this site is edited, and made available (except where otherwise noted) under a Creative Commons license. Craig

Update on membership for 2005
by Craig Box 05 Sep '05

05 Sep '05

Hi everyone, I assume most of you skipped over the message I just posted because you've seen it before, but please don't skip this one. We currently have three nominations for committee members, and require at least seven. Please, if you think you have time to help out with the WLUG (it really doesn't take much), stand for nomination. If you're a current committee member who wishes to reapply, you should really already have told me. >:) The list of candidates is now at http://www.wlug.org.nz/WlugCommittee. Also, thanks to everyone who has filled out the survey already (http://survey.wlug.org.nz/) - responses will probably close a couple of days before the AGM, so a proper report can be written, but anyone who has yet to fill it out is encouraged to do so at their earliest convenience. We have had a number of good ideas pitched by people via the survey that I look forward to the LUG implementing. Remember also you also go into the draw to win a $100 Dick Smith Electronics voucher if you fill out the survey and (re)subscribe to WLUG at the AGM. Thanks for your time, Craig

ANNOUNCEMENT: Annual General Meeting, 26 September
by Craig Box 05 Sep '05

05 Sep '05

In accordance with Rule 6 of the charter, I would like to announce to all members that the Waikato Linux Users Group (Incorporated) will be holding its Annual General Meeting on Monday, 26 September, 2005, at 7pm, at the regular meeting location of room LitB at the University of Waikato. New committee ============= All WLUG members are encouraged to stand for election onto the WLUG committee for 2006. The charter currently specifies the committee as consisting of a President, Vice President, Secretary, Treasurer, and five general committee members. Because of the relatively large size of the committee compared to the organisation's membership, the outgoing committee intends to propose a change to the charter at the AGM. We wish to call for a vote on modifying Rule 7 to require only three general committee members, not five, and modifying Rule 6 such that the quorum for committee meetings is four, not five. To stand for the committee, please email secretary(a)wlug.org.nz. If you wish to nominate someone, please contact them and ask if they are willing to stand; if you would rather not contact them yourself, feel free to email me and I will pass your request on for you. People with uncertain futures (who may be leaving the Waikato) are encouraged not to let this stop them standing for election, but please only stand if you are committed and prepared to take on a relatively small workload. To be granted voting rights at the meeting, you must have been a paid member for 2004-2005, and signed a new membership form for '05-'06. (Remember, you have 90 days to pay.) Survey ====== I would also like to remind everyone about the first annual WLUG survey, and the chance to win a $100 Dick Smith Electronics voucher! All people associated with WLUG, paid members or not, are encouraged to fill out the survey at http://survey.wlug.org.nz/. No personal information is collected and all responses are totally anonymous. At the end of the survey you will be given a token; bring this to the AGM and sign up for the '05/'06 year, and you will be in to win the $100 voucher. Regards, Craig WLUG Secretary

Mobile Repositories
by Ivan Potgieter 03 Sep '05

03 Sep '05

Hello all, I have recently upgraded to a larger HDD and I decided to install (Ubuntu) from scratch. This required all the updates and installation of all the additional packaged that I use. The problem is that I only have dialup Internet access and it took some time to download. I also have a requirement to update 2 non-networked PCs. I am using Ubuntu with Synaptic Package Manager, which works well, but I am not sure how it works 'behind the scenes'. The idea I have is to create a specialised repository that contains specific apps (or updates), which can be placed onto mobile media for installtion onto the non-networked PCs (as well as a being a backup). Can anyone out there shed some light on how to create such a repository or any other possibilities for installing packages onto the non-networked PCs? Some topics I love more info on are: * Where do packages stored when downloaded and how long do they remain there? * What is required for creating a repository? * How do configure Synaptic to access this new repository? Any thoughts / help welcome. Thanks, Ivan

Acceptable use of the WLUG Mailing List
by Meeting Reminder bot 02 Sep '05

02 Sep '05

The WLUG Mailing List is the discussion-list extension of the Waikato Linux Users Group (Incorporated). As such, we expect members of this list to adhere to the principles espoused in the official WLUG Charter[1], in particular, Rule 6, which covers the activities on this mailing list. While this is an Acceptable Use Policy, the WLUG Committee do recognise the need for informal discussion among list members, and draconian administration is not the goal here. Please keep in mind, however, that your comments to this list do represent the WLUG, and while it is good to be seen as an organisation with a sense of humour, some comments may do major harm to our credibility as a serious advocate of GNU/Linux and all things Free Software/ Open Source related. List discussion should * be honest * accentuate the positive, without hyperbole or blatant misrepresentation * maintain a reasonable level of spelling and grammar * not indulge in ad hominem attacks * not continue inflammatory or abusive threads * not be unprofessional or petty, especially with respect to the names of other software companies * not promote or denigrate political, cultural, or religious views * not indulge in marketing or advertising, other than on a private sale basis, or advertising of jobs - which may be announced once only * not reproduce copyrighted material without permission from the copyright holder * not defame any person or organisation Posters who consistently violate these guidelines will be dealt with at the discretion of the List Maintainer. If you feel you have been unfairly dealt with, you have recourse to any member of the WLUG Committee[2]. Certain mailing list etiquette should also be maintained: * please use only plain text (not HTML) * reply inline or below when quoting, rather than on top * trim quotes (don't reply quoting a 10 page message with a single line of reply) If you have any questions, start reading at http://www.gweep.ca/~edmonds/usenet/ml-etiquette.html. These points have been established over a long time on this list. If you want to question them, please do it off list. As list users, use your discretion when pulling people up over etiquette - please reply off list, and if there is a serious breach, the list administrator will probably have dealt with it off-list already. Call for nominations for 2005/06 WLUG Executive Committee
by Greig McGill 02 Sep '05

02 Sep '05

Hi all, It's almost AGM time. Craig tells me that survey responses are coming along nicely, and that several people have said that they would stand for election to the WLUG Committee. To date, we have recieved no nominations, and time is growing short. If you wish to nominate someone, please get in contact with them and confirm their desire to be nominated. You may nominate yourself if you wish. When you have a confirmed, enthusiastic nominee, please email secretary(a)wlug.org.nz, and we will tally the nominations. Voting will be at the AGM. All continuing paid members are elligible to vote, as per our charter (http://www.wlug.org.nz/WlugCharter) I'd like to take this opportunity to announce that I will not be standing for the WLUG Executive again this year. It's been a great year as "The Fist", and I believe that the current committee has achieved a lot, but I can no longer commit the time or passion which I feel the job requires, and will thus be standing down. My final presidential role will be chairing the AGM, and I hope to see you all on the 26th. :) Thanks, Greig McGill President Waikato Linux Users Group Inc.

Wireless performance
by Oliver Jones 29 Aug '05

29 Aug '05

I've been twiddling with my wireless router settings and nothing I've changed so far has improved performance. Some appeared to degrade it a little. I'm still only getting 120kbytes/sec in gFTP/SSH. Which translates to about 1Mbit/sec. This is supposed to be a 54Mbit device. Come someone else with a 802.11g wireless network do a little throughput test and let me know what sort of data rate they get. Thanks.

I was think from a maintenance perspective it might be wiser for me to use Debian. Though now that 3.1 (Sarge) is out I'd prefer to use that. Is it possible and/or easy to upgrade 3.0 to 3.1 via apt-get dist-upgrade? Advice, experiences, etc appreciated. Regards

27 Aug '05

Hi everyone, If you have some spare time over the weekend, please consider filling out the WLUG survey at http://survey.wlug.org.nz/ We have had around 20 submissions so far, and we have received some excellent feedback on what we should be doing differently. Some of the suggestions will be brought in from as early as the AGM. There are over 150 people subscribed to this list. It would be great to end up with a similar number of responses, so we can be sure that the overall answers are representative of the opinions of everyone involved with WLUG. Remember, all people in any way associated with WLUG, paid members or not, are encouraged to fill out the survey. Everyone who fills in the survey and then signs up or renews their membership at the AGM is in the draw to win a $100 Dick Smith Electronics voucher! Transparent bridge ADSL modem
by Craig Box 25 Aug '05

25 Aug '05

Hi all, I am looking for a reliable, good quality ADSL device that can be used as a transparent bridge to a Linux machine. Some of the Linux machines we have run as IPSEC heads, and by far the best way to make sure that the device correctly forwards packets on certain protocols (not ports) would be to have it transparent. Ultimately what I want to have is this: internet -- adsl modem -- [linux (eth1: public IP) ] [linux (eth0: internal IP)] - nat The closest I've got to this before is the M1122 on PPTP, but I would rather the bridge was at ethernet level if possible. Can anyone make any recommendations on devices that do this? Reliability is far more important than price (these will be for business customers) and I would prefer something that has firmware upgrades available without a support contract. Thanks, Craig

I am not aware of any DSL modems that do PPP-to-Ethernet relaying. I'm not even sure how you would implement this in the DSL modem. I guess the eth interface of the DSL modem would have to emulate the IP of the upstream side of the PPP link, and provide some sort of DHCP server to assign that IP as default-gateway to the downstream client). help for hamilton linux newbies
by David McNab 22 Aug '05

22 Aug '05

Hi all, I'm a Debian user of 4 years, and have just recently moved into Hamilton from a certain torturous urban sprawl north of the Bombays. I've been meeting lots of people here, and every time the topic of computers comes up, and I say I've been 100% virus-free for 4 years, people ask me how I've done it, and what they need to do to make the switch to Linux themselves. Does WLUG have any official points of contact for linux newbies seeking to kick their proprietary software addictions? For instance, is there a programme of regular installfests, or linux for newbies meetings? -- Cheers David

Making Wireless go faster.
by Oliver Jones 21 Aug '05

21 Aug '05

Hi Guys. I've got a 802.11g Wireless card and Linksys WAG54G. I've also got my "NAS/Media Centre" connected to the WAG via wired 100Mbit Ethernet. Now, "G" wireless is supposed to be 54Mbit per second. Which if you take it at face value should give you around 6Mb a second transfers. However whenever I'm transfering to and from my NAS I'd be luck to break 200kb a second. Now I know the "advertised" speed of 802.11g isn't close to 6mb/sec but I would have thought I'd get faster than 200kb a second. Why is it so slow? How can I make it faster? eth1 IEEE 802.11g ESSID:"FlindersLAN" Mode:Managed Frequency:2.462 GHz Access Point: 00:13:10:9A:DD:9C Bit Rate=54 Mb/s Tx-Power=20 dBm RTS thr:off Fragment thr:off Power Management:off Link Quality=94/100 Signal level=-41 dBm Noise level=-81 dBm Rx invalid nwid:0 Rx invalid crypt:0 Rx invalid frag:0 Tx excessive retries:1 Invalid misc:0 Missed beacon:5 I am using WEP. Good distro for old machines
by async＠slingshot.co.nz 16 Aug '05

I have a tutor with a problem. He wants to send a whole lot of machines back to his home town in South Africa and has asked me to help. The problem is that most of the machines have 32/64MB RAM and only P2's with very small hard drives. I was wondering if anyone could recommend a distro that would run on these specs and be easy for people who have not touched a computer before. Ideally, it would run XFCE or something that is low on resource usage. I am looking at maybe Puppy, DSL or MepisLite. Cheers Nick

bash versus the space character
by Jonathan Purvis 16 Aug '05

16 Aug '05

Does anyone know how to get bash to split the output of a command enclosed in `` the same way it would split the command line if typed in? Everything i do to try to escape spaces ends up not working. Eg, this command (for sorting the songs from _The Dark Side Of Phobos_ in level order) produces a string that can be cut'n'pasted to bash, but if i change the echo command to mplayer, it doesn't work as bash split on spaces. echo `find . -name '*E1M*' | awk '{print $2,$0}' FS='[()]' | sort | sed -e 's/[^ ]* $.*$/\1/' -e 's/$[ ()]$/\\\\\1/g'`

15 Aug '05

2006 - Dunedin, NZ! linux.conf.au is the annual Australasian Linux technical conference, and is one of the largest gatherings of users and developers of Free and Open Source Software in the Southern Hemisphere. It is an opportunity for developers and groups to present their ideas amongst peers, and for the Free Software and Open Source communities to gather in general. Summary: Call for Miniconfs The 2006 conference is being held in Dunedin, New Zealand, at The University of Otago[1]. More information can be found on the conference website: http://lca2006.linux.org.au/ Call for Miniconfs: The organisers of linux.conf.au 2006 would like to invite any groups or organisations wishing to hold a 'Mini Conference', or 'Miniconf', to present a short proposal outlining their interest. Miniconfs are held on the Monday and Tuesday before the start of the main conference (23rd and 24th of January 2006). Proposals for 1-day or full 2-day Miniconfs are welcome. Proposals should be made via email to the main conference organisers at: organisers(a)lca2006.linux.org.au . Proposals are due by Wednesday August the 31st, 2005. This is a very short period for proposals - Just over two weeks, since there have already been expressions of interest from several groups, and we wish to provide organisers with as much time as possible to organise their Miniconf. Organisation of a Miniconf is the complete responsibility of the individual, group, or organisation that has expressed interest. This includes, but is not limited to, inviting speakers for the Miniconf, scheduling allotted time, and leading the Miniconf. linux.conf.au 2006 will only provide a venue to hold the Miniconf, which includes AV equipment. We will also provide a mechanism for Conference delegates to 'register' which Miniconfs they intend to attend, during their registration for the main conference. Please note that attendance at Miniconfs is only available to delegates registered for the main conference. Miniconf Speakers are not eligible for the same benefits as main conference Speakers, and will need to register if they wish to attend the main conference. Dates to Remember: * Proposals Due: Wednesday August 24, 2005 * Announcement of Chosen Miniconfs: Friday August 26, 2005 * Conference begins: Monday January 23, 2006 Please feel free to forward this announcement to your local LUG, or any other person or group that would be interested! Using SimplyMepis 3.3.1: I have to access work using a Cisco VPN connection. I have installed "vpnc" and "tun". I can establish a VPN connection and get an IP address assigned. ifconfig tun0 tun0 Link encap:UNSPEC HWaddr 00-00-00-00-00-00-00-00-00-00-00-00-00-00-00-00 inet addr:10.255.255.1 P-t-P:10.255.255.1 Mask:255.255.255.255 I then added a route with the work IP address range: route add -net 10.83.0.0 netmask 255.255.255.0 dev tun0 However, I cannot access the servers at all. What have I done wrong and/or missed? Thanks for your help Felix

Free wiki space?

Folks, Does anybody have any recommendations for free Wiki space? I am thinking of maybe wikispaces.org as this looks OK and content is under Creative Commons. I am looking at this for todo for DCCP kernel development and it is a bit detailed, dynamic and hard core for the WLUG website in my opinion... Ian

Hi. I'm looking to hire a part time Linux person to help with customer support over at http://rimuhosting.com. I've posted some info about what I'm looking for here: http://forums.rimuhosting.com/forums/showthread.php?t=130 RimuHosting is based out of Cambridge, but the intent is that most of the work is doable remotely (i.e. from home). It is evening work and may suit a Linux-mad uni student wanting to gain some IT work experience. Regards, Peter http://rimuhosting.com - Linux VPS Hosting

New Zealand Linux Wiki
by Craig Box 10 Aug '05

10 Aug '05

Hi everyone, At the last WLUG committee meeting, we discussed the topic of the "NZLUG view" into the WLUG wiki. The issue is that we have a very complete archive of Linux knowledge related to New Zealand that some people incorrectly believe "you have to be a WLUG member to use". The WLUG committee are committed to making our wiki useful and accessible to everyone, while retaining its identity as "the official WLUG website". We would like the wiki to be relevant to all of NZ's Linux users, not just those involved with WLUG or NZLUG. We also respect that much of the content has specific relevance to only New Zealand. Much discussion took place on the various options to rectify this situation, with the two main options being: * Remove the "NZLUG view" until a national organisation is in place * Rebrand the "NZLUG view" as a New Zealand Linux Wiki, now The committee decided that the first option may send the wrong signals regarding our intentions, and has therefore decided to offer the alternative view under the tentative name of "New Zealand Linux Wiki", and publicise it to all New Zealand LUGs. Feel free to check out the modified site at http://wiki.linux.net.nz/. Comments are welcome (offlist in the first instance please). Regards Craig

RE: [wlug] suse linux goes community
by David Nicholls 08 Aug '05

9.3 seems to have bumped up its detection of hardware I'm pleased to say. It managed to detect an old scsi card that 9.1 & 9.2 both did not pick up. As a consequence I now have my tape drive & cdrwiter back... Yay! You can also choose a gnome install for suse (it's been my default choice since 9.0) although a few people up @ the uni seem to prefer the kde install. Cheers... david -----Original Message----- From: Oliver Jones [mailto:oliver(a)deeperdesign.com] Sent: Monday, 8 August 2005 10:55 pm Subject: Re: [wlug] suse linux goes community Hmmm... the System admins at work were waving around copies of SuSE 9.3 the other day. I only just installed FC4 on my Laptop and I'm happy enough with that. Certainly the Geekiest of the Sys Admins at work seemed to think SuSE was nice. Though he still uses primarily FC. I've toyed briefly with a SuSE 9.x Live CD just after I got my Laptop. It didn't detect all the hardware as well as FC3 did so I didn't dally with it long. Also, I'm not a big KDE fan. Good too see that Novell is being more open about SuSE development though. The whole Cathedral built from OpenSource bricks idea is not so good IMO.

suse linux goes community
by David Nicholls 08 Aug '05

08 Aug '05

you might find this interesting... <http://arstechnica.com/news.ars/post/20050802-5162.html> SuSE goes community 8/2/2005 11:40:34 PM, by Ryan Paul <mailto:segphault(a)sbcglobal.net> The community dynamic perpetually stimulates the progress, development, and communication that enable distributions like Gentoo, Fedora, and Ubuntu to maintain their position at the pinnacle of Linux popularity. In an attempt to create a community of its own, Novell plans to announce <http://www.eweek.com/article2/0,1895,1843097,00.asp> the creation of an OpenSuSE community at LinuxWorld in San Francisco. Novell intends to make the entire body of SuSE Linux source code available to the public by the end of 2006 via its future OpenSuse.org web site. Novell believes that collaboration with the Linux community will substantially benefit Novell as well as Linux developers and consumers. Novell's open source marketing director, Greg Mancusi-Ungaro says "We're trying to make it easier for application developers to come to Suse, create forks, create packages and build the software." Source code accessibility will bring new developers into the fold, which could potentially yield exceptional new technologies. It will also broaden the base of active testers, which will enable Novell to squish bugs faster. Despite plans to make the new, fully open incarnation SuSE Linux widely available at no charge via Internet downloads and CD give-aways, Novell will also sell OpenSuSE in boxed sets. Distribution and availability are key in this game, and the marketing minds at Novell are well aware of it. According to Mancusi-Ungaro, Novell previously "made [SuSE] not widely available--just retail stores or a packaged download from an FTP. It's not the easiest way to gain a large user community." He says that Novell now plans to "give away thousands [of copies] at user group events." Migration towards a community model is always a very positive change for everyone involved. The value of a strong community is possibly best seen in Ubuntu (which means "I am what I am because of who we all are"), a widely popular Linux distribution that places an incomparable emphasis on collaboration. Ubuntu was named best community of the year, and best distribution of the year in the 2004 Ars Technica Linux Awards <http://arstechnica.com/columns/linux/linux-20050102.ars> and continues to be a favorite of the Linux.Ars crew. By establishing a well-knit community of users and developers, Novell hopes that SuSE will be able to achieve the level of success and notoriety attained by open distributions like Ubuntu. SuSE has always been a popular commercial distribution, and now by actively engaging its fans in the development process, it could become one of the new Linux leaders, both on corporate desktops and in the homes of individual users. Novell is already the proud custodian of countless imperative Linux technologies like Mono, Evolution, Hula and Beagle. OpenSuSE will give Novell even more leverage as it struggles against fierce competitors like RedHat and Mandriva. The notion of an open SuSE is not a new one. In May, Jason Perlow wrote an article for Linux Magazine in which he states: "It's pretty darn clear to me that to make mojo, SuSE Linux Professional needs to look deep into its roots and re-birth itself as a public, open-source project similar to Fedora." Now that Novell has heeded the call of the community, SuSE will have an opportunity to grow and evolve in ways that it never could before, and Novell will have many excellent opportunities to capitalize on increased community interest. Reminder: linux.conf.au 2006 - Call For Papers
by Mike Beattie 05 Aug '05

05 Aug '05

2006 - Dunedin, NZ! linux.conf.au is the annual Australian Linux technical conference, and is one of the largest gatherings of users and developers of Free and Open Source Software in the Southern Hemisphere. It is an opportunity for developers and groups to present their ideas amongst peers, and for the Free Software and Open Source communities to gather in general. Summary: A gentle reminder that the Call for Papers is open, and there's only one month remaining for submissions! http://lca2006.linux.org.au/cfp.php The 2006 conference is being held in Dunedin, New Zealand, at The University of Otago[1]. More information can be found on the conference website: http://lca2006.linux.org.au/ Call for papers: The organisers of linux.conf.au 2006 would like to invite you to submit a paper for presentation at one of the world's leading Linux community conferences. Most presentations will be of a technical nature, but those covering legal, educational, organisational, community or similar aspects of open source software will also be welcome. Promotional presentations, commercial advertisements, sales pitches and their like are not appropriate for this conference. Papers on the following topics are encouraged: * The Linux kernel, filesystems and networking * Databases and storage * Programming languages and tools * Linux on the desktop: productivity, groupware and GUIs * Multimedia, audio, video, music and games * Security * Linux deployments, practical experience and war stories * Linux on unusual platforms: embedded systems, virtual systems, handhelds and very large systems * Distributions, management and standardization * Other open source projects We are open to a broader range of topics as well, even non-Linux based projects. So, submit it to us anyway! Please note however, that all presentations must be based on 'open source' software and projects. We have two (very different) main presentation formats: 120+ minute interactive tutorials and 50 minute seminars. You may also wish to participate in a miniconf, lightning talk, BOF session, or present a poster. ** Submission Guidelines Abstracts are required for paper, tutorial and work in progress presentations. Abstracts should be up to 400 words and be submitted to the Paper Review Committee via the web page: http://lca2006.linux.org.au/cfp/ Submission requires pre-registration as an Author, providing the following information: * Author's full name (and preferred handle, if any) * Author's complete email address * Author's affiliation with commercial or relevant organisations * Author's postal address * Author's telephone and/or mobile numbers, with area and country codes. * Author's short biography, in around 1 - 3 paragraphs. * Whether travel and accommodation assistance will be required Abstracts and biographies should be submitted as plain text. The final paper should be submitted in an appropriate open format, such as 7-bit ASCII text, HTML, DocBook or LaTeX. Any featured software in papers must be available under a licence compatible with the Open Source Definition[2]. Any papers that are accompanied by non-disclosure agreement forms will be rejected. All successful papers must be eligible for republication on-line and on distribution media given to conference attendees. linux.conf.au requires publication rights to accepted papers, including the publication of the audio proceedings as well as publication and reproduction rights to any video filmed during the presentations. These rights are non-exclusive. Copyright ownership is retained by the author. Submitting an abstract indicates understanding of and consent to these conditions. In the event that you miss one of the deadlines we reserve the right to revoke any offer to present your paper. We take having the paper for the conference proceedings very seriously and late submissions place an undue burden on our formatting team. ** Travel and Accommodation Assistance Some financial assistance is available for speakers' travel and accommodation in cases of need. Please indicate in the appropriate place during registration as an Author if this is the case. Financial assistance may be withheld if final complete submissions aren't received by the date specified above. Dates to Remember: * CFP Opened: Tuesday July 12, 2005 * Abstracts Due: Tuesday September 5, 2005 * Notifications by Review Committee begin: Wednesday September 20, 2005 * Final Complete Submissions Due: Friday December 1, 2005 * Conference begins: Monday January 23, 2006 Please feel free to forward this announcement to your local LUG, or any other person or group that would be interested! Invitation to participate in discussion about a national Linux body
by Matt Brown 01 Aug '05

01 Aug '05

Tue, 2 August 2005 Recently, discussion has taken place in a number of forums around the creation of a national Linux body in New Zealand. We (the undersigned) envisage a national Linux organisation for New Zealand which would be very closely modelled on the successful Linux Australia. In particular, such an organisation would have the following broad goals: * Support, resource and promote local LUGs[1] * Provide national co-ordination services (speaker organisation, etc) * Provide web/email/mailing list hosting for LUGs where required * Seek funding from corporates and other interested parties in order to provide financial support to LUGs and individuals to foster F/OSS[2] development efforts and support attendance at F/OSS conferences. * Partner with organisations like NZOSS[3] to advocate and educate the community (and particularly the Government) on the benefits of Linux and F/OSS. * Partner with organisations like Linux AU to support and enhance the LCA conference. * Provide SIG[4] mailing lists and support services for NZ F/OSS users The national organisation would not perform the functions of a LUG itself, instead it would: * Provide a central location where users could be connected to their local LUG * Provide co-ordination and communication between individual LUGs * Undertake national initiatives supported by all LUGs * Aggregate LUG opinion and present a unified voice to the Government and other industry groups. * Support the formation of local LUGs in areas where they currently do not exist. We believe that to be successful such a group must be separate to local LUGs but have strong relationships with each of the LUGs around the country. A mailing list has been setup at discuss(a)meta.net.nz; see https://secure.meta.net.nz/mailman/listinfo/discuss for details on how to subscribe. All interested parties are invited to join this list and participate in the disucssion. In particular, we would like to see robust discussion of the above goals and also of the scope of the organisation: * What should the name of the organisation be (LinuxNZ, NZ Linux)? * Should the group seek to enhance an already existing group (eg NZOSS)? * Should it seek to support other Free Operating Systems (*BSD, etc)? * Should it seek to support F/OSS on other Operating Systems, eg Mozilla / OpenOffice.org on Windows? * How should the organisation be organised legally? * What should the nature of the group's relationships with NZOSS and Linux Australia be? Our intention is to solicit opinions until about 1 October 2005. At that point we would hope to be able to be in a position to put together a more formal proposal to refine the discussion. All going well it would be great to be able to hold the inaugural AGM of the new organisation during LCA'06 in Dunedin in the final week of January 2006. We look forward to seeing you on the discussion list. Kind Regards -- Craig Box <linux(a)dubculture.co.nz> Matt Brown <matt(a)mattb.net.nz> John McPherson <jrm21(a)cs.waikato.ac.nz> Footnotes 1. Fedora, RPM, and repositories.
by Oliver Jones 31 Jul '05

31 Jul '05

Hi Folks. I've recently upgraded from FC3 to FC4 on my laptop and I'd like to ask about others experiences with RPMs and the different repositories out there. Personally I think the whole Fedora repository thing is getting a little messy. At the moment I'm just using the FC, Fedora Extras, Livna.org, nRRPMS-mono and JPackage repositories because they are all "compatible" with each other. However there are a number of other repositories out there like Dag Weirs, Dries, ATrpms etc that have lots of neat stuff but tend to be fairly incompatible with FC+FE. Ie, they duplicate packages found in Core or Extras. I'd be interested to hear about how others are dealing with repo incompatibility issues when using Fedora. I'd also like to hear about any advocacy or repository merging stuff that is going on that anyone knows about. Regards

Hi everyone, On the 1st of February we were happy to have Philip Hazel, author of Exim and PCRE, present to WLUG (see http://www.wlug.org.nz/MeetingTopics.2005-02-01 for the writeup). The meeting was videoed and was then encoded by R2 in Wellington. You can find it with the NZNOG talks at http://www.r2.co.nz/20050203/, else a direct link is at http://www.r2.co.nz/20050203/p-hazel.asx. Be warned, the entire talk comes in at about 650mb. If anyone is interested I might be able to get a couple of copies on CD at the next meeting. With the win32 codecs (w32codecs package from Marillat on Ubuntu) you can play this stream with mplayer. Acceptable use of the WLUG Mailing List
by Meeting Reminder bot 31 Jul '05

31 Jul '05

Warty then Hoary 5.04 It took me a long time to get this distro installed. I think the main reason for this was that I was a bit afraid of losing my Ntfs partion (XP win with a working 54m wireless card) so I allowed the auto partion to do its thing. What happened was the install went ahead but failed right at the end because there was no / root partion. auto partition made a 8.7 gig non root ext3 and a 512 bootable swap. The way I finally overcame this error by reinstalling but choosing the "expert" mode (Yep, John the expert) I could then choose a partion with a /root I still stayed with the two partitions 8.7gig /ext3 and 512meg bootable swap. the result of this was that I got (for the first time ) a non crippled but not quite fully funtional Ubuntu laptop. the problems that I _KNOW_a little about are 1.. The last thing about the install was a message telling me to become su and run cron. I do not know what the actual message said or how to recover the message in order to read it 2.. The widgets that require a user pass word are returning "fail" with a child <n> error 3.. I have no sounds because I have not joined the correct group yet. In an attempt to get this right I have downloaded a several thousand more words to read from a number of Debian areas with a view to doing yet another, perhaps even more successfull instal. If any Wlug members would like to add some helpful comments (on or off list) I would appreciatte their input as I am determined to do this this thing at some time of my life.. Regards John

Soooo many Gnome apps generate these sorts of messages. You would think that developers would get rid of them. I certainly would if I were writing GTK/Gnome software. But that is just me. But then lots of Gnome apps (even "professional" ones like Evolution) commonly crash. I love Linux, but for all the "linux is so stable" rhetoric out there, GUI apps in Linux are not always the best. Which is why more GUI apps should not be written in C/C++. More python I say. Even Java would be a good option now with the way GCJ is maturing and the Gnome/Java bindings. I would also give props to Mono as that looks pretty cool but until it is on safer legal ground I can't. Knoppix, apt
by Camster342 28 Jul '05

28 Jul '05

Hi people, first time poster here... Okay, this is somewhat difficult to explain, but I'll try my best. I use Knoppix 3.8.1 at work, but I cannot get good internet access (it keeps randomly cutting off downloads larger than about 500K), and I want to update/replace a couple of packages, but I know that doing this is going to require a whole lot of dependencies. First of all I want to replace OpenOffice.org with an english version (this knoppix only came with the german version). And then I want to upgrade KDE from 3.3.2 to 3.4.1. I want to do this by 1. Working out from my knoppix machine at work which packages it's going to need. 2. saving that list somehow, going home, downloading all of the packages at home. 3. Writing a CDRW or something with those packages. 4. Configuring apt on my machine at work to get all of the packages it needs from the CDRW, rather than the net. Has anyone had to something like this before? The ones that I think I need pointers on are going to be 1 and 4. Anyone know how I would go about those in particular? -- Cameron

by jaytee＠clear.net.nz 28 Jul '05

I have checked for case errors and tried a variety of ways of putting the pass it simply does not work. There are three likely outcomes after I type a password.<enter> 1 The widget disappears and nothing further happens. 2 The widget returns "Failed to run < name of programme> Child terminated with 1 status" 3 returns a password error message (least likely) Regards John

"Bus Error" when running apt-get, and how it went away.
by Glyn Webster 26 Jul '05

26 Jul '05

At the last meeting I told some friendly people I had problems with 'synaptic', 'aptitude', and 'apt-get' all crashing with a "Bus Error" on my Ubuntu installation. They all began to work again after I ran 'dselect'; I assume 'dselect' somehow repaired the package database while updating it. Yay: a grave bug in the APT package management system has been hidden away until Next Time! :-) I mention this because the friendly people (whose names I'm sorry I can't remember) said to describe my problem again on the mailing list. -- Glyn Webster ~ Simplicity Himself.

WLUG and NZLUG tentative position
by Greig McGill 26 Jul '05

26 Jul '05

Waikato Linux Users Group Inc. Interim Statement on National Linux Body ======================================================================= Tue, 26 July 2005 During this year discussion has intensified around the creation of a national Linux body in New Zealand. WLUG committee members have been involved in this discussion and WLUG has shown its commitment to the ideal of a national linux body by offering to host an "NZLUG Theme" into the WLUG Wiki. WLUG envisages a national Linux organisation for New Zealand which would be very closely modelled on the successful Linux Australia. In particular such an organisation would have the following broad goals: - Support, resource and promote local LUGs - Provide national co-ordination services (speaker organisation, etc) - Provide hosting for LUGs where required - Provide financial support - Partner with organisations like NZOSS to advocate and educate the community (and particularly Government) on the benefits of Linux and OSS. - Partner with organisations like Linux AU to support and enhance the LCA conference. The national organisation would not perform the functions of a LUG itself, instead it would: - Provide a central location where users could be connected to their local LUG - Provide co-ordination and communication between individual LUGs - Undertake national initiatives supported by all LUGs - Aggregate LUG opinion and present a unified voice to the Government and other industry groups. The WLUG committee intends to meet this Friday (July 29) to discuss this issue further and to formulate WLUG's definitive position on this subject. We look forward to working with other members of the New Zealand Linux community in trying to create a national Linux organisation. Please direct all submissions on this matter to secretary(a)wlug.org.nz before midday on the 29th of July. -- Greig McGill President Waikato Linux Users Group Inc.

Hi rod, I suggest you go here ( http://dev.mysql.com/doc/ ) and check out the different forms of documentation - one even has user comments. You can also download tarballed html and PDFs etc. I myself have found this site extremely helpful in the past. There are other sites around dealing with mysql and they should be easy to find, by the official site is pretty good. However it seems to be an info version of what I read on the mysql website. This looks to be just what is needed for an expert, but leaves me uncertain as to what has already been done by synaptic and what I need to do to achieve what I want. For example the installation section of the info manual says: ---snip--- I think synaptic has done most or all of that and I that should go on to post-installation setup and testing, but how do you tell? There is no sign of mysql on my user menu. Do I need to add rod to the mysql user group? Rod

My root pass and my user pass does not work (even Gandhalf is no good) I think this last issue is unrelated, on boot I get "ror: temporary unable to resolve name" Any help on this would be welcome Regards John

Setting up and learning MySQL
by Roderick Aldridge 25 Jul '05

25 Jul '05

I have installed MySQL on Ubuntu but have not initialised anything yet. I want to learn it well enough to set up a simple database for my audio collection and also a simple database for work. Neither will be on-line or need high security. What is the easiest way to initialise it? Do you just run the install script (as root?) shell> cd mysql_installation_directory shell> ./scripts/mysql_install_db shell> ./bin/safe_mysqld --user=mysql & or shell> ./bin/mysqld_safe --user=mysql & if you are running MySQL 4.x. and continuing? I want to set it up for user rod to be able to experiment easily without ruining everything. Also what and tutorial GUI would you reccommend for my purposes? I see the python front-end was also installed along with MySQL and I have installed mysqlcc. Any pointers greatly appreciated Roderick Aldridge

Installing OOo beta on Ubuntu
by Graham Lauder 15 Jul '05

15 Jul '05

Need a little help here for an rpm centric user I put the latest OOo beta in my Ubuntu box and ran alien with -i to convert and install Everything seemed to go swimmingly . All files in the right place and installation exactly as would expect. However, the executable: soffice, won't run. I ran ls -la and soffice permissions read: --------- interesting Anyway I'm definitely a deb newbie, so I'm scratching my head a bit. Anyone else used Alien to get OOo 1.9.113 running on Ubuntu or would have a suggestion what to try. I also did a simple conversion from rpm to deb. Would that be a better way to go rather using Alien to do the install. And having said that what's the install procedure. man install is of course no bloody use at all. ;) Cheers Yo

New MythTV music player on the way - something to help hack on?
by Craig Box 13 Jul '05

One of the complaints we have about MythTV is that the music player is very unintuitive. Have a brief read of the thread http://mythtv.org/pipermail/mythtv-dev/2005-July/038011.html where some discussion is underway about a replacement that is a frontend/backend system, using the DAAP protocol (http://daap.sourceforge.net/) that ITunes uses. http://cvs.mythtv.org/trac/browser/trunk/mfd - backend http://cvs.mythtv.org/trac/browser/trunk/mfe - frontend When I get home I'm very interested in having a look at this and it might pay to look at helping this project rather than doing anything with MythMusic. SATA RAID cards
by Bnonn 13 Jul '05

13 Jul '05

Hi guys I'm looking for a 2-port SATA RAID 1 card, which I'll be installing into a P3 1 GHz to make up a wee webserver running Ubuntu. I currently have my eye on the Adaptec 1210SA or the Promise FastTrak TX2200/TX4200 cards. Both of these appear to have Linux driver support, although the websites only list specific distros so I suspect they're binary drivers only. Does anyone know of any thorny issues I should be aware of? I've done some searching and couldn't find anything conclusive either way. I don't want to spend too much on the card, but I'm willing to pay a little more for a card which is known to work (I couldn't find a list of supported RAID controller cards for Ubuntu; if anyone can point me in the right direction I'd be appreciative). If anyone has any other cards they know work and can recommend, I'd be pleased to hear from them. Regards Bnonn

ISO + Modem questions
by Dean 11 Jul '05

11 Jul '05

I solved my modem problem yesterday by using pppconfig instead of the GUI one Ubuntu provides, I'm not sure whats wrong with it, but something is definatly broken. I'm not sure if ubuntu comes with pppconfig by default (I downloaded it and installed it before checking) if not I used the package from http://packages.debian.org/stable/base/pppconfig I then installed the package and used it, just as easy as the GUI to setup, and all you need to use are pon <name of connection> and poff <name> and all works wonderfully :) Hope that works, Dean > Message: 1 > Date: Sat, 09 Jul 2005 23:20:43 +1200 > From: Ivan Potgieter <tealsky(a)bigfoot.com> > Subject: [wlug] ISO + Modem questions > To: wlug <wlug(a)list.waikato.ac.nz> > Message-ID: <42CFB30B.5(a)bigfoot.com> > Content-Type: text/plain; charset=ISO-8859-1; format=flowed > > Hi all, <snip> > > I realize that the speed test is not going to be overly accurate, but > I'm not concerned with getting an accurate speed measurement. ISO + Modem questions
by Ivan Potgieter 10 Jul '05

10 Jul '05

Hi all, I have been running Ubuntu now for a few weeks (on a test box) and I am continuously finding new 'gems' in the GUI. It does handle writing ISO images to disk very well, but I found no way to create an iso image of an (existing) disk from within the Ubuntu (Gnome) GUI? (I was trying to copy the Ubuntu Live CD). I had to use 'dd' from a console - is there another way? ALSO: I am having some trouble with my external modem... * The abridged version * Good connection using Win2K, SLOW connection using Ubuntu. * Detailed version * Step1: To begin, I checked to see what modem I had via MiniCom: atz OK ati1 External Controller Ver1.20, CheckSum=617A OK ati3 TP560 Data/Fax/Voice 56K Modem OK - So it is a (generic) 56K Modem. Step2: I used Win2k to perform a speed test (it's the pc nearest to the phone line) Connected to http://www.jestreamgames.co.nz/speed/ Quite a respectable speed (43 K bits/sec) Step3: I connected the modem to Com1 on my Ubuntu box, it connected, but the same test (on the same phone line) gave me 0.9 K bytes / sec! I realize that the speed test is not going to be overly accurate, but I'm not concerned with getting an accurate speed measurement. I just used this method to get a comparison. btw - I did the 500k test. Does anyone have any ideas / suggestions ? Thanks Ivan

I have had notorious problems with Ubuntu and external modems, It has put me off for the moment until I can find a fix. I have tried 2 different external modems and both had sub 14.4k connection speeds. I think I tried some init strings and I tried setserial, both with no noticeable effect. If you do find a solution I would be very interested in it. :) Dean > Date: Sat, 09 Jul 2005 23:20:43 +1200 > From: Ivan Potgieter <tealsky(a)bigfoot.com> > Subject: [wlug] ISO + Modem questions > To: wlug <wlug(a)list.waikato.ac.nz> > Message-ID: <42CFB30B.5(a)bigfoot.com> > Content-Type: text/plain; charset=ISO-8859-1; format=flowed > > Hi all, <snip> > ALSO: > > I am having some trouble with my external modem... > > * The abridged version * > Good connection using Win2K, SLOW connection using Ubuntu. > > * Detailed version * > Step1: To begin, I checked to see what modem I had via MiniCom: > atz > OK > ati1 > External Controller Ver1.20, CheckSum=617A > OK > ati3 > TP560 Data/Fax/Voice 56K Modem > OK > > - So it is a (generic) 56K Modem. > > Step2: I used Win2k to perform a speed test (it's the pc nearest to the > phone line) > Connected to http://www.jestreamgames.co.nz/speed/ > Quite a respectable speed (43 K bits/sec) > > Step3: I connected the modem to Com1 on my Ubuntu box, it connected, but > the same test (on the same phone line) gave me 0.9 K bytes / sec! > > I realize that the speed test is not going to be overly accurate, but > I'm not concerned with getting an accurate speed measurement. FW: Announcing Launch of ($10m) Ubuntu Foundation
by Craig Box 08 Jul '05

08 Jul '05

Below is the press release sent off to the wires announcing the creation of a new foundation by Mark Shuttleworth and Canonical to help support Ubuntu and employ core Ubuntu developers over the long term and to help distinguish the commercial support and certification programs of Canonical from the truly community-based nature of much of Ubuntu's work. There are some other big announcements buried in there as well like the introduction of longer-term supported releases. :) I hope you join me in thinking this is fantastic news for the Ubuntu community on a number of different levels. Regards, Mako LAUNCH OF $10m UBUNTU FOUNDATION 08 July 2005 Mark Shuttleworth and Canonical Ltd, founders of the popular Ubuntu Linux-based operating system, have today announced the creation of The Ubuntu Foundation with an initial funding commitment of US$10m. The Ubuntu Foundation will employ core Ubuntu community members to ensure that Ubuntu (www.ubuntu.com) will remain fully supported for an extended period of time, and continue to produce new releases of the distribution. As a first step, the Foundation announces that Ubuntu version 6.04, due for release in April 2006, will be supported for three years on the desktop and five years on the server. The Foundation was established on July 1st 2005 with an initial funding commitment of US$10 million, to ensure the continuity of the Ubuntu project and create a legal vehicle that represents the community structures of the project. "It's important for us to distinguish the philanthropic and non-commercial work that is at the heart of the Ubuntu project, from the commercial support and certification programs that are the focus of Canonical Ltd." said Mark Shuttleworth, who is founder of the project and is making the initial $10m commitment to the Foundation. "The core team members employed by the Ubuntu Foundation will ensure that we can meet public commitments to keep Ubuntu entirely free of charge, as well as meeting commitments of support for extended periods. I'm very excited at the progress that has been made in bringing free software to the global marketplace, and pleased to continue my support for the project in this way." Ubuntu has quickly become a leading distribution in the free software world, taking the #1 place in DistroWatch popularity rankings over all timescales which are published. The distribution focuses on usability, security and stability on desktops and servers, and on making free software widely available for individuals and organisations who are ready to switch from proprietary platforms, such as Microsoft Windows. Ubuntu has also become the basis of many other derivative distributions, particularly those backed by govenments for widespread deployment. The government of Andalucia, Spain recently announced that its own version of Linux would be based on Ubuntu, and deployed in all educational operations. LONGER SERVER SUPPORT CYCLE One driving factor behind the creation of the Foundation was the need to ensure that an Ubuntu release can be deployed on servers, which demand much slower release and upgrade cycles. "In order to support the use of free software on database and other servers, we will be offering security support for the Ubuntu base and major server components for a full five years", said Matt Zimmerman, CTO of the Ubuntu project. As Ubuntu and free software in general become more mainstream, it has become costly for companies and large organisations to keep track of the rapid pace of development. In the desktop environment the problem is more manageable, and steady improvements in the usability of desktop office and productivity applications have been welcomed. In the datacenter, however, where Linux and free software are considered mature, deployments have a preference for fewer releases with long lifecycles. Ubuntu version 6.04, to be released in April 2006, will be aimed at meeting those requirements with a full five year commitment to provide security and other critical updates for servers. This also meets the needs of OEM distribution providers and ISVs, who have expressed strong interest in supporting free software environments but who prefer to be able to plan for releases and support them for longer periods of time. The extended service support for Ubuntu version 6.04 will remain free of charge, under the same terms as the support currently provided to every release of Ubuntu. The extended service support program will only apply to designated releases of Ubuntu. Other releases, which will still be made on the current six-month cycle, will continue to receive the current commitment of 18 months free security and critical updates support. KEEPING FREE SOFTWARE FREE A primary goal of the Ubuntu Foundation is to ensure that a high quality distribution of free and open source software is available free of charge, throughout the world. "Free software is produced by expert volunteers who make their time and work freely available - our goal is to ensure that anybody in the world can make the best use of that work, at no charge." said Benjamin Mako Hill, Ubuntu Community Relations. Both Canonical and the Ubuntu Foundation have made public commitments that Ubuntu will always be freely available, without the need for royalties or licence payments of any kind. "We include only free and unencumbered applications, ensuring that users have the ability to share and modify their software." CONTINUED SUPPORT FROM CANONICAL LTD. The establishment of the Ubuntu Foundation enhances the commercial commitment already made to the Ubuntu project by Canonical, Ltd. "Demand for the commercial services offered by Canonical to users of Ubuntu continues to grow. We welcome the very large number of companies that have announced support for Ubuntu both regionally and globally, and expect to continue to create additional partnership, certification and support programs in coming months," stated Jane Silber, head of marketing at Canonical. The extended life support program for Ubuntu version 6.04 is in line with Canonical's efforts to broaden the OEM base for Ubuntu. "The distribution has been selected by several hardware manufacturers for sale with PCs and laptops, and the availability of a long term supported release of Ubuntu that's independent of the commercial success of Canonical meets the needs of specific manufacturers in the hardware marketplace", continued Silber. The Ubuntu Community Council will act as the advisory board of the Foundation. Current members of that Council are Benjamin Mako Hill, Colin Watson, James Troup and Mark Shuttleworth (Chairman). First post - Help please
by Ivan 02 Jul '05

02 Jul '05

Hello all, I attended the last WLUG meeting (my first time at a LUG) and I picked up the latest Ubuntu CDs, which I have been trying it out. Although I am not new to Linux (in the far distant past I found great enjoyment setting up Linux servers: Samba, DHCPD, Apache, DNS, etc from the CLI - using Redhat 5.2 ). I have not had time to continue and much of that knowledge has faded. :-(( I do remember that there are no short-cuts: RTFM, RTFM, RTFM, RTFM, and RTFM again - Unfortunately due to demands on my time I cannot spend any great amount of quality time mulling over documentation and deciding the best application and/or strategy to take. (Ubuntu does make most tasks easy!) Recently, I have been spending a little time with Gentoo, but after trying Ubuntu's live CD I was hooked, especially since it has the Install disc as well. IMHO Ubuntu has really stepped up the standard with regards to getting the typical home user to experience Linux painlessly AND leaving them impressed and possibly even excited by the possibilities. (well, I was) <grin> Cutting to the chase: I have decided to replace the family's main PC with an Ubuntu Box. Currently it is mainly used for browsing, email, the family finance & the odd WinMine game. I have setup an old PC as a Ubuntu 'proof of concept' with great success so far, but there are a few issues: 1) I need a replacement for MS Money. GNUCash seems to be the appl for the job. Has anyone used it or any other that can be recommend? 2) Currently we access multiple (pop3) mailboxes. Since, Linux maintains strong user security, I am unsure which strategy to follow: a) Configure one user specifically for the mail. b) Share the mail between multiple users (shared single db) c) Other ??? I am also not sure which email appl to use. Evolution seems fully loaded with features, but would thunderbird be better? We also have about 3 years worth of archived mail which must be imported (from MS Outlook). 3) I would like to setup internet sharing from the Ubuntu box and I cannot find an easy (GUI) sharing option. I could probably do this 'manually', but would like to know if there is any way this can be achieved for non-techies. 4) How do I reconfigure X, to use a different video card? 5) Winmodems <sigh> is there any hope? Many people with whom I have come into contact would love to try/switch to Linux. The problem is that many have winmodems (myself included, fortunately I also have an USRobotics external that came to my rescue). Is there anything that can be done? (easily, that is) There are more questions, but I think these are enough for the moment. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Is there any way I can get my grubby mitts on 3 more Ubuntu disks? (As I mentioned before. I have been showing it around and would like to hand out the disks) Many thanks, Ivan

Dual boot
by John Torrance 02 Jul '05

02 Jul '05

I have previously configured a dual boot system with Grub using XP (FAT32) and linux with no problems. However, on my main computer, I tried XP (NTFS) and Linux with disasterous results - lost my whole windows disk. I am keen to try and load Ubuntu concurrenly on a separate disk on my main XP computer but do not want to loose my bills etc. Has anyone successfully dual loaded Ubuntu on an XP machine where the XP is NTFS? Alternatively, can one convert NTFS to FAT32? Cheers John

Acceptable use of the WLUG Mailing List
by Meeting Reminder bot 30 Jun '05

30 Jun '05

Wlug Wiki License Changes
by Matt Brown 29 Jun '05

29 Jun '05

Hi All, Long mail sorry, please read at least the first five paragraphs, as they are the critical ones. I'm happy to receive comments on this, please try and keep onlist replies to topics that are of interest to *all* readers only. Currently the wiki states that copyright is retained by the author of the page, but provides no details on the acceptable uses of that content. This leaves the situation quite murky. Clearly it is highly desirable to have a much more definite situation regarding the licensing of wiki content. To this end the Committee has decided that going forward the wiki content will be licensed under the Creative Commons Wiki License. Details information on this can be found at http://www.wlug.org.nz/WlugWikiLicense in short it allows anyone to copy / modify / distribute the wiki content provided that they a) attribute its source as the WlugWiki b) provide the copied / modified / distributed content under the same license as they are using it under (ie the WlugWikiLicense). As a wiki author it means that you are agreeing that your content can be used in the ways specified by the license and you are waiving your rights to attribution in favour of the content being attributed to the Wiki. You'll still get your name displayed on the wiki in the recent changes / page history / etc :) If you're an author (have ever added or edited content to the wiki, please add the following code to your HomePage to indicate that you are happy for all your past / future content to be licensed under the WlugWikiLicense. ---- I agree to the WlugWikiLicense%%% [http://www.wlug.org.nz/theme/WLUG05/cc-wiki.gif] ---- >From the date Mon 18 July 2005 00:00 NZST onwards all authors making additions and modifications to the wiki must agree to provide their content under the WlugWikiLicense. This will be clearly described on the edit page from this date forth so that everyone understands this. ----- Critical bit ends now - thanks for your patience ------ The remainder of this email deals with our plans for the significant issue of how to relicense the existing wiki content in an appropriate and acceptable manner. In this process the committee is trying to balance the need to have a robust defendable process for relicensing the content, with the common belief that anyone who added content to the wiki (by it's very nature) was implicitly agreeing that it could be further copied / modified / distributed. While we think that there is a very strong argument for this interpretation we would still like to set a good example by obtaining permission to relicense from authors wherever possible. Obviously there will be some content (imported manpages / howtos / etc) that we may not be able to relicense, so for the forseeable future there will be certain pages in the wiki that will not be under the CreativeCommons license. Each page will clearly describe the terms that it is licensed under. It is the committees intention to work with wiki authors over time to bring more and more content under the new license, with the eventual goal of having all content in the wiki available under the same license. This may take some time :) 1) As described above the first step in the migration plan is to get every author to add to their page a statement that they agree to the WlugWikiLicense 2) A plugin will be written to analyse each page and the individual diffs that constitute the current version of this. 3) For each diff the author will be looked up to see if they have agreed to the new license 4) If all authors of significant diffs that constitute the present version of the page have agreed to the creative commons license the page will be licensed under creative commons, otherwise it will remain as is. 5) Significant diffs as mentioned above must meet two criteria 1) They were not marked as a 'Minor change' when they were made 2) They add or modify more than 10 lines of the page content and contain new material (ie. A 20 line diff that fixes capitalisation and punctuation is not significant). Hopefully this is an acceptable process that will allow us to progressively bring the entire wiki under the new license as we gain acceptance from more and more authors, and as pages naturally grow and are modified with new content under the new license. Pages containing both old content and new licensed content will default to being displayed as they currently are (ie not under the new license). Futher details are available at http://www.wlug.org.nz/WlugWikiLicense and I am happy to clarify any details that I've missed out of this email. Thanks for your patience, -- Matt Brown Wlug Commitee Member matt(a)mattb.net.nz Mob +64 275 611 544 www.mattb.net.nz

Hi, Thanks for all the help. Bnonn I tried: > $ sudo aptitude update > $ aptitude install gnucash Update worked, but install didnt. The highlight (lowloght) was: ** Couldn't find any package whose name or description matched "gnucash" ** Then I tried Synaptic Package Manager (as Matt suggested) - Did not work at first, but tweaked it a bit and got it going. It took forever to download - I think my modem must be in v.34 Mode or something - will have to investigate. BTW GNUCash seems to suit our needs. Thanks again for all the help. Ivan

Stolen laptop
by zcat 19 Jun '05

19 Jun '05

A few days ago my laptop was stolen from my van. I'm fairly sure that the people who stole it were on foot and live within a few blocks from here (around the Poutney Park area). They also stole a stack of DivX movie CDs, some tools, and varous other items. I'm expecting that they won't be able to sell it (my laptop has no keyboard) but they might be able to figure out how to swap the Linux drive for the Windows drive and play movies on it, and there's a slight chance that they will leave the Wifi card plugged in. SO if anyone's driving around this area with a laptop and netstumbler, please look out for the MAC address 00:04:e2:b5:51:0d. If it shows up make a note of the approximate location and call me 8551826 or 0212595256. -- Disclaimer: Any disclaimer attached to this message may be ignored.

On getting and setting up Ubuntu (dual booted)
by s swami 18 Jun '05

18 Jun '05

I'd like to try Gnome. (shush :-) Ubuntu seems to be the way to go given WLUG expertise and a read of the wiki. Do we have any more cd's to give away? Can I hopefully get the most recent version? How do I get hold of them? I'm on a blistering 33k[1] modem so the more stuff I can get on cd, the better. Current setup: Slackware dual booted with w2k on a single HD. Would like to replace w2k with Ubuntu. (Judith has her own box now!) Steps ----- 1. backup Slack 2. delete w2k partition with Linux fdisk 3. intall Ubuntu beside Slack I'm already familiar with lilo but if things will be smoother for dual Slackware/Ubuntu with grub (for whatever reason) I'm happy to switch. Advice, suggestions, warnings are appreciated. Does Ubuntu come with reiserfs? Thanks Sid [1] Until recently, I thought it was a 56k.

Squid
by Bnonn 13 Jun '05

13 Jun '05

Hi everyone I'm looking for opinions on Squid. If anyone runs it, or has run it, can they offer their views on it, and comment on any possible pitfalls? I'm wanting to install it on Hoary to act as a caching web proxy on a firewall box. I notice that Squid doesn't appear to be in the Universe or Multiverse repos for Hoary (unless I'm using aptitude completely wrong). I have no problems compiling from source; I'm lazy and like to install from binary where possible. Does anyone know of third party repos with Squid in them? Any decent third party repos would be handy actually. Failing that, does anyone know why Squid is not included in the Hoary repos? It seems fairly popular and I would have expected to see it there. Note that if you're using grub (which Ubuntu does by default) you don't need to mount rw to fix problems. simply push 'e' on the line that is about to be booted and you'll be able to edit it. This will allow you to try booting with different root partitions /dev/hda2, /dev/hda3 etc until you find the correct one. Once you done that and booted up ubuntu successfully then you can modify the grub config on the hard disk. That sounds a bit extreme!! What filesystem does ubuntu use by default? Sounds to me like someone released a new kernel without compiling in the appropriate FS support. My solution would be boot from the live CD, mount your root partition, copy over the live CD kernel and initrd.img, then edit grub or lilo to boot from that kernel. After that you should be able to boot normally and go find a newer kernel that works like it should. -- Disclaimer: Any disclaimer attached to this message may be ignored. _______________________________________________ wlug mailing list | wlug(a)list.waikato.ac.nz Unsubscribe: http://list.waikato.ac.nz/mailman/listinfo/wlug

Introducing Software Freedom Day 2005!
by Craig Box 07 Jun '05

07 Jun '05

Henrik Nilsen Omma writes.. Hello, Mark September 10th 2005 on your calendar! It is the second annual Software Freedom Day. We will be staging a range of events around the world to raise public awareness of Free and Open Source Software. This is a global grassroots effort, and we invite the Free and Open Source Software community around the world to join in the celebration and help spread the word! Over 70 teams joined the celebration in 2004, organising a range of events at schools, universities and public places. This year, we have every opportunity to grow and make an even greater impact on community awareness. What will happen? ----------------- You may celebrate the day locally however you would like, but we encourage you to engage in some sort of outreach activity to spread the FOSS message in your community. For example, you could organise a seminar or an installfest or simply invite people to meet up in the park for a picnic. If you want to participate, please stop by the SFD website [1] and register a team so that others in your area can find you and hook up. Our website and wiki have pictures and reports from some of the SFD2004 events, so you can get an idea of what worked well. If you participated last year, please join us again, and please share your experiences with the new teams. How does it work? ----------------- As last year, we will prepare special promotional materials for distribution by the SFD teams. In 2004 this included ISO images of a custom version of TheOpenCD and a custom version of Knoppix along with some printed materials. Due to our budget constraints we were only able to produce CD covers while the local teams did a great job of burning their own CDs and copying materials. This year we will create a single CD containing both a Live Linux image and some Windows-FOSS for this purpose. We have funding from our primary sponsor for up to 15.000 of our custom CDs shipped out to 150 teams world-wide! We In addition, other supplies (such as t-shirts and balloons) will be available, but the quantities and distribution process of these items is not yet determined (depends in part on the availability of additional funding). By June 15th we will provide a simple supply request form where established teams can request CDs and possibly other materials for SFD. Be sure to get in your application for supplies before the July 1st deadline so we can get the supplies produced and distributed in time for the event. What can I do? -------------- The best way to participate is to start forming a SFD team and start planning local celebrations. Make sure you register as an official team [1] so you can apply for sponsorship of materials. We also need help with lots of things on the global level: Writing: We would appreciate well-written articles about SFD or about FOSS in general that can be submitted to local media or distributed on the day. Form letters that can be sent to schools, businesses government organisation, etc. will also be useful. Material Design: We have some artwork already, but we need designs for the SFD 2005 CD labels and covers, as well as T-shirts, balloons, stickers, or even temporary tattoos! If you or your friends have some artistic inclinations feel free to pop into the SFD Forums to share your ideas and your work. Donations: SFD funds cover the costs of material and logistics support that we provide. The more funds we have available, the more material and logistical support we can provide for teams world-wide. So don't feels shy about donating :) Any surplus funds can be used for advertising in the week before the event. Donations can be made online at the SFD website. Getting in touch ------------------ Please stop by our forum or join #sfd on freenode IRC. We have set up a temporary mailing list here [2] where people can hook up, but we will provide more regional lists as the needs arise. Best wishes and happy Software Freedom Day 2005! - The SFD Team [1] http://softwarefreedomday.org/ [2] https://lists.sourceforge.net/lists/listinfo/theopencd-sfd2005

Website Redesign
by Matt Brown 05 Jun '05

05 Jun '05

The more observant of you may notice that the WLUG Wiki is sporting a fancy new look. We'll probably roll this theme out across the other resources (Library / Webmail, and Planet WLUG (coming soon)) when we get some spare time. As with all new things there might be a few bugs lurking in the new theme, if you spot any please let me know. While I am semi-interested in comments on the new layout, I'm going to have a very low tolerance for comments like "the fonts look ugly" or "the fonts are too big" unless you're actually interested in making a positive contribution to improving the situation (and that generally means the email includes a diff for the .css that you think fixes the problem). Thanks to John, Perry and the others who have helped in the implementation of this new theme. Graphic design credits go to my wife Katalina. Kind Regards -- Matt Brown matt(a)mattb.net.nz Mob +64 275 611 544 www.mattb.net.nz

Kiaora CD is 'piracy' ?!!
by zcat 05 Jun '05

05 Jun '05

I gave my wife a few spare copies of Kiaora CD to sell on Trademe (mostly just to get the name out there) and they were pulled. When I asked why, we got the following reply; Dear Susan, Thanks for contacting us. You are not allowed to list CDs containing programs that you do not hold the copyright for. These CDs contained a number of programs freely available on the internet. CDs of this nature are considered piracy and will be removed. If you have any further questions or if I can be of any further help please do not hesitate to contact me. Regards, Sophie I sent a fairly grumpy reply back citing the GPL, RMS's page on 'selling free software' and so on, but now Sue's quite upset and refuses to have anything more to do with it. What else can I do. TM seems to have some 'very confused' ideas of what constitutes piracy, and I have a hard time calmly explaining the issues when I feel like they're calling me (or Sue) a criminal and removing perfectly legitimate listings with no compensation. -- Disclaimer: Any disclaimer attached to this message may be ignored.

Gnome 2.10
by Oliver Jones 01 Jun '05

01 Jun '05

Hmm. After all that fricking around with Synaptic I can hardly notice the difference between Gnome 2.10 and 2.8. *sigh*. There are a few cool new applets, CPU freq monitor, trashcan, etc. And I think some of the games use SVG for graphics instead of PNG's (though I'm not sure if 2.8 didn't have that already). It doesn't seem as stable... in some areas. Though the package quality of the nrpms.net Gnome RPMS is not so great so this is probably more a problem with the RPMS than GNOME 2.10 as a whole. There are a few nice new apps. Seahorse (GPG encryption key manager), Evince (Cairo based PDF & PS viewer) considerably slower at rendering than gpdf :( but does provide nice thumbnails in Nautilus. Of course nothing beats Acrobat for rendering PDF but Acrobat takes an age to start. "Fast task switching", aka starting a new X session on another VT, is kinda neat. Remote desktop sharing would be handy in some cases. Coaster is an extremely simple CD/DVD burner which looks good/useful. GnomeBaker on the other hand looks like the startings of a K3B replacement, but with not as many features yet. Other than that, not a whole lot of difference. Of course the RedHat menus have gotten all buggered up with weird entries. Mainly from 3rd party rpms. As for some of the mono apps... well I've not played with them too much. Had a brief look at Muine, tomboy, f-spot and Beagle. Beagle will be cool. But it is quite rough around the edges at the moment. f-spot is good but 'alpha'-ish. Muine will be excellent when it supports more than mp3. Nearly all my music is in .m4a (AAC) format for my iPod. Muine uses GStreamer as a backend but GStreamer as shipped by NRPMS.net doesn't support AAC. Ah well... life on the bleeding edge... ;) Regards -- Oliver Jones » Roving Code Warrior oliver(a)deeperdesign.com » +64 (21) 41 2238 » www.deeperdesign.com

Acceptable use of the WLUG Mailing List
by Meeting Reminder bot 31 May '05

31 May '05

Hi there, One thing I have noticed at http://www.wlug.org.nz/WantedWikis is that some of the entries shouldn't be there. e.g. CategoryDialUpISP which is only referenced in http://www.wlug.org.nz/CategoryIsp but there it has a ~ in front of it to say that it is not a Wiki Word. There are lots more of these to be found.... Is this a known bug or just not been fixed? Ian

RMC Donnelly [rmcdonnelly(a)linuxmail.org] writes... Hi Im looking for some help in the Waikato area and Im hoping one of your members can be of service. Please excuse me if I say all the wrong things, or call stuff by the wrong names as all of this stuff goes way over my head. The problem I have is this: my partner has just installed open office on my mums pc which is good, but we live on the Kapiti Coast and she lives in Thames. We will courier her pc up to her, but this is where the problem starts. We need someone who is familiar with it to plug it in and configure it properly (I think thats what my partner said has to be done??) Is there any one of your group who lives close to Thames or is able to help us out with this? We would be willing to pay for their time and travel. My mum will need a little help in getting started on it too - how to do the basics and how to get onto the internet - shes 78 and is used to using only Microsoft products. We got rid of the microsoft stuff as Andy (my partner) says its unstable and full of security risks. Are you able to put a call out to your members and see if anyone is able to help us. Thanks for your time and once more please excuse my stupidity and ignorance - Im not the techy one in this household (as you probably have noticed LOL) Cheers Ruth Donnelly

Problems with 2.6.11 on FC3
by Raymond Burgess 30 May '05

30 May '05

Hey Guys, I have installed FC3 on my server machine and have noticed huge problems when running the latest kernel release, 2.6.11-1.27_FC3. When ever I try to copy a larger amount of files from one partition to another the machine locks up and just dumps millions of lines of what looks to be a stack dump, I left it dumping to see what it said when it stoppped, but after 8 hours while I was at work it still was running past too fast to read. I have switched back to the stock 2.6.9 kernel that comes on the CD and have no problems doing the same thing. Anyone else had any problems with the newer kernel pacakge? Side note, I had originally planned to run Ubuntu on the machine but couldn't get it to boot off a Raid 1 /boot and / on LVM, FC3 handled installing on this setup without an issue. Raymond

GPG Keysigning Tomorrow Night
by Matt Brown 22 May '05

22 May '05

Hi, I'm doing a bit of an impromptu talk tomorrow night on PGP/GPG, what it is, why you'd want to use it, etc. At the end we'll organise an impromptu keysigning party. Given the late notice and the fact that there is not likely to be a huge number of people with keys I'm not going to organise anything using the fancy methods. So if you want to get your key signed you need to bring - A trusted copy of your key fingerprint (preferably multiple copies that are printed, so you can give them away) - At least one form of government issued photo id (two are preferred). 21 May '05

Hi all As a suggestion, suggest asking Nandor Tanczos visit a few sites like http://www.mplayerhq.hu/homepage/index.html were the mplayer project foresees having to shut down if the EU adopts the software patent laws. By the way there is a petition to the EU at this page, mainly intended for within the EU but they do appreciate support from elsewhere in the world too. There is also a page explaining why software patents are a bad idea. http://lpf.ai.mit.edu/Patents/industry-at-risk.html and here http://swpat.ffii.org/ and here http://www.nosoftwarepatents.com/en/m/intro/index.html At least when he gets to a meeting he will have some idea of the issues. As I work evenings I won't have a chance to attend the meeting. Oh well back to a day job in August :-) Regards David

Train spamassassin virtual domains.
by DrWho? 12 May '05

12 May '05

A question for all you script people. Has anyone come across a script that will read all users from the userprefs table then call sa-learn, with the user name and a constructed path to the spam / no spam. Basicly I have set up two IMAP folders, spam and no spam for use per user, which will hopefully be used to train spamassassin per user. All user options and Bayes are stored in MYSQL. I am using vpopmail to provide the "virtual domains" so the script has to be able to pull the user name apart so it can be re-assembled to form a path to the spam folders. i.e. User - x(a)y.z Path to spam folder - /home/vpopmail/domains/y.z/x/Spam/New Oddly enough I thought this would be something every man and his dog would do, but it seems not. Any ideas???

Hi everyone Just today my sturdy old Athlon 850's CPU fan decided to give up the ghost, and I decided that it was a sign that I need to get with the times. Because I have no need for anything particularly powerful, I'm going to be purchasing an AthlonXP 2400+, since they're dirt cheap. I'd like the list's advice on what sort of mainboard is best to pair this with; or, rather, what sort of mainboard I definitely shouldn't pair it with. I'm running Ubuntu, and I know its hardware support is pretty good, but any advice you can offer would be appreciated. Onboard graphics is prefered; onboard sound is neither here nor there. In general alarms are wired directly into the telephone system, not to a plug which goes into a socket. If it was, then eveyrone would just unplug the socket, and the alarm couldn't dial out to say it had gone off. In a wires-to-a-wall situation, if there is a random wire cut, the alarm should go into "I have been tampered with" mode. Therefore you can't just drop an inline filter in as easily as you can in front of a telephone. You can do your own ADSL installs (http://jane.nevada.net.nz/realDSL.jpg) but unless you have good equipment, it's not advised. The internet would always drop out at the flat in the picture. :) Craig

Security is their primary responsibility. As Matt said, a polite email to the bank explaining your problems, what you've encountered is a more appropriate action to take. Anyway, when you are more than likely to encounter the same problems with the next bank. Just bear in mind that they won't come up with an instant solution (unless they have already identified this problem) as they will spend time doing testing.

I know there was a thread about a month ago about Linux antivirus software, but I don't recall anyone mentioning AVG. Grisoft now have various versions of AVG 7.0 on offer for email servers & workstations. Has anyone tried any of the Linux versions yet?? http://www.grisoft.com/doc/Programs/lng/us/tpl/tpl01?prd=trisng Shane.

What version or Firefox were you using under WinXP? They are most probably doing their browser detection using the UserAgent string that your browser supplies which I would have thought would have been fairly similar between Linux and Windows. Perhaps not... You could try going to http://www.showmyip.com/ in both Windows and Linux, and recording the Browser (UserAgent) string it reports, I'd be interested in seeing how they differ. Hello list, I'm interested to know how the install-fest went on Saturday. I was scheduled to be in Auckland at a convention for the weekend but was stricken with some illness and was left behind. Still I was able to install Ubuntu Hoary on my box. Some news would be welcome. Linz

Thanks for all your help. I have installed the user agent switch and all seems to be working sweetly. I will contact the bank and advise them accordingly. Problem #1 solved. I was explaining to Justin on Saturday that we spend a lot of time chasing online suppliers that our clients deal with in order to get them to support firefox. They usually respond helpfully. HSBC seem to be an exception. I would suggest that the useragent workaround will get you going right now, and in the meantime, if you find that their site works flawlessly with the switch, then email them, and let them know this. It may at least convince them to opening up trials of other browsers, once they realise there may not be anything to fix. Internet Banking using Ubuntu and Firefox
by Justin Hyde 09 May '05

09 May '05

Hi After installing Ubuntu on the weekend at the install fest, I tried accessing my internet banking service with HSBC. I got an error message saying that I should use IE or Netscape. I contacted the bank this morning and received the reply below. Could someone using Ubuntu and Firefox check whether they can access https://ebank.hsbc.co.nz to see if its just my computer or a general problem. Could someone recommend a way of getting around the customer services people at the bank and through to the IT guys? As an aside, I could access this banking service using Firefox on my WINXP setup. Cheers Justin Hyde Dear Andrew, RE: HSBC Internet Access We thank you for your email. Please be advised to access the HSBC Internet Banking you will need to use one of the following: Web Browser Version PC's Internet Explorer 5.5 and 6.0 Netscape Navigator 7.0 MAC's Internet Explorer 5.1.7 for Mac OS 8.1.9.x Internet Explorer 5.2.3 for Mac OS X We apologise for the inconvenience and thank you for your patience. If you require further assistance please call our Direct Service Centre 24 hours a day, 7 days a week on 0800802380 (within New Zealand) or 09 3660366 (from overseas). Kind regards, Tatiana Mendoza Customer Service Consultant Direct Service Centre www.hsbc.co.nz --Original Message-- I have a new computer at home that has the Ubuntu version of linux as its operating system and Firefox as its web browser. When I tried accessing HSBC internet banking I was not allowed by HSBC to log on saying that I needed to Internet Explorer or Netscape Navigator. I believe that Friefox and Linux are widely accepted in the IT community, so I am puzzled as to why HSBC is not allowing access through these systems. I had to log into my old computer that has Windows XP so I could send this message from HSBC internet banking. Cheers

Installfest roundup
by Craig Box 08 May '05

08 May '05

Hi everyone, Thanks to everyone who made the WLUG Installfest for 2005 a huge success. We had around 60 people attend, with about 40 maximum at any one time; slightly more than last year. Thanks to our sponsors: * CrawshawSchool, for the venue * DSE, for donating CDs, power cables and Cat5 patch cables * AlliedTelesyn, for the loan of network equipment * O'Reilly, for giveaway and new library books. Thanks also to all the committee members and helpers who gave a lot of time and energy into getting Linux going. Twelve people took advantage of our half price membership at the installfest offer and joined WLUG. We hope you're really pleased with Ubuntu as a distribution; I'm really pleased that we got it running perfectly on nearly all PCs, including two that were having serious problems with Mandrake and SUSE. [1] The network was really great. We had no major problems on the day, and we cached all the updates beforehand so that people didn't have to wait around. We did about 2gb of traffic, but about 80% of that came out of the cache, so we only actually downloaded 400mb of data (most of which will be the updates for the two AMD64 machines that we didn't have updates cached for). If anyone has any feedback (especially new people who are on the list now) please feel free to post it here. Photo galleries are linked from the http://www.wlug.org.nz/InstallFest.2005-05-07 page. Craig [1] To my knowledge, there were only two PCs that didn't leave with Ubuntu correctly set up on them. One was a very new tablet PC that couldn't boot off an external CD-ROM drive. We got the Ubuntu netinstaller and made it boot that, but the hard drive resizing facility in the installer didn't want to resize the hard drive. The other machine was a very old laptop that had a hardware fault of some sort.

got hardware/machines for sale?
by John R. McPherson 04 May '05

04 May '05

Hi everyone, we're considering setting a table or two aside at the installfest[1] this Saturday for the sale of machines and hardware. We'd like to have a couple of reasonable low-end/mid-range machines for sale that are suitable for a linux desktop in case anyone wants to buy a machine and get help with installation at the installfest. If you are interested in selling anything, please let me know (off-list!) so we have some idea of how much stuff we need to accommodate. Note that you'll have to be responsible for bringing it along, looking after it, and taking it away if it is unsold. [1] http://www.wlug.org.nz/InstallFest John McPherson

Debian, Shorewall and dial-up
by Glenn Ramsey 02 May '05

02 May '05

Recently I changed the NAT/firewall setup scripts on my Debian box to Shorewall from ipmasp, because I couldn't figure out how to configure DNAT using ipmasq. There is problem with the Shorewall setup that I cannot find any references to, neither in the docs nor googling. This box does NAT/firewall for my small office LAN through a dial-up connection[1]. On boot as Shorewall tries to start I get messages saying: "modprobe: modprobe: can't locate module ppp0", until the script times out after 180s. After that, however it seems to work fine. The issue is that this extends the startup time by 3 minutes. I think this is because, following the "two interface setup" in the docs, I have set wait_interface="ppp0" in /etc/default/shorewall and this causes /usr/share/shorewall/wait4ifup to be executed. Since it's a dialup connection it can't find ppp0 at boot time, hence the problem. Removing the wait_interface causes the startup of Shorewall to fail. Seems like this would be a common issue and since I can't find any references to it this makes me think I have missed something fundamental in the setup. Apart from this issue the rest of the setup works fine. Ipmasq handles this situation by setting up LAN stuff at boot and then having a /etc/ppp/ip-up script to setup the external interface stuff. What is the right way to resolve this issue? The solution I'm after is the "standard, out of the box" one. This is because if I put in customised stuff I will inevitably forget about it and then wonder why it's broken next time I uprade something[2]. For now I have disabled shorewall at startup and added a script that contains only "/sbin/shorewall restart" to /etc/ppp/ip-up.d. This works but also involves customisation beyond what is described in the docs and is additional to the configuration provided by the package. Ie if I remove the shorewall package my script will not be deleted. I could just set the timeout in wait4ifup to be a smaller value, like 1sec, which would solve the problem but that seems like a hack that I shouldn't need, but it's more likely to be removed if I remove/purge the package. Glenn [1] in case you were wondering, DSL is not available where I live. [2] and it's frustrating enough dealing with the stuff that breaks all by itself when you upgrade something -- Glenn Ramsey <glenn(a)componic.co.nz> 07 8627077 http://www.componic.co.nz

I have downloaded and installed BWBasic to tinker with some older basic programming code that I know. I cant get it to run in RUN but it starts in Terminal. However, with no GUI I tell tell what I'm doing. 1) Is there away to make this more visual i.e. like GWBasic, Quick Basic? 2) Where can I find some coding instructions? (I have googled without getting anything I thought was relevant) Thanks in advance

Sausage sizzle at installfest
by Craig Box 02 May '05

Hi, Anyone want to run a sausage sizzle/cold drink sale at the installfest? Short notice unfortunately, but if anyone has a school or another club that wants to fundraise they would be welcome to. Alternatively if anyone wants to run a sausage sizzle for the WLUG and doesn't mind bringing a BBQ, we'll buy the sausages/bread etc.. Craig
