REMINDER: WLUG meeting tonight!
by Meeting Reminder Bot 26 Mar '06

26 Mar '06

There's a WLUG meeting tonight: ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Our guest for March is Linda Wright. Her talk is entitled ''New Business Models for Open Source (http://www.wlug.org.nz/OpenSource) Advocates and Developers'': ;: "In a nutshell, I plan to survey some of the past Commercial and http://www.wlug.org.nz/OSS business models (from the anarchic and utopian to the present) and discuss some of the commercial implications of these. I then intend to discuss three contemporary OSS business models, their virtues and limitations, and the new trend of large so-called 'old economy' companies solving the problem of OSS competition by buying out start-ups. Then I will move on to talk about the business model of Concentus, which I believe is fairly unique, and how I believe it addresses some of the classical problems that both commercial and OSS developers face with their respective models. Anyone who has ever wondered how the heck you can make money out of supposedly free software should probably attend." Linda Wright is the former Software Development Manager for Toll New Zealand (http://www.tollnz.co.nz) (Corporate). Linda is a native of San Francisco, California and has over 20 years experience in Software Development (http://www.wlug.org.nz/SoftwareEngineering) SDLC Management] and Business Consulting. Some of her personal career highlights include developing one of the world's first Visual Software Development Environments (1989), the creation of a complex problem solving methodology called 'The Resolution of Complexity' (1992), and a http://www.wlug.org.nz/patent for a Telephonic Transaction System (1998) (http://www.wipo.int/ipdl/IPDL-CIMAGES/view/pct/getbykey5?KEY=00/18088.000330) Linda is the managing director of a film production company called Pretty Good Productions Ltd, and has recently formed Concentus Ltd, an [Auckland-based technology company. Squid - Proxy Auth - Firewall
by Jodi Thomson 24 Mar '06

24 Mar '06

Hi all I'm wanting to setup Squid to use proxy auth against Active Directory. That seems straightforward enough. However I am having trouble in figuring out whether or not to put Squid internally or inside the DMZ for this to work The firewall re will be running is a Juniper NetScreen-25. The DMZ is comprised of real-world IP's, internally it's all private IP Does any one have any experience in this? kernel for p4 (kinda OT)
by Glenn Enright 23 Mar '06

23 Mar '06

Anyone have some ideas why they never built an arch for p4 CPUs into the kernel? I realize that these are covered by i386. A little while ago, after looking round a bit in a custom tree and creating a p4 arch myself (Im not a programmer BTW, just hacking, pruned out some 'surplus' code mostly, using 2.6.14), a clean build ran in *lots* less time. No runtime benchmarks, but response times were also definately better, and had no issues with drivers or anything. Used gcc 3.4.5 too. It wasnt quite as stable so I did something wrong somewhere, but it seems odd there was no real demand for this arch. Especially since p4s have been around for so long. BTW I did have a look on google, but mostly found newbies asking the same question with no response or devs saying they couldnt be bothered lol. Just seems a shame to waste potential if its there :). Comments? -- No outsider has ever seen a Tleilaxu female and lived to tell about it. Considering the Tleilaxu penchant for genetic manipulation -- see, e.g., related memos on clones and gholas -- this simple observation raises a wealth of additional questions. -- Bene Gesserit Analysis

Waiting until the day before you leave the country is not a good way to make a buying decision but that is what happened in my case _I did_ go to dse and try an install but dopey me took the wrong architecture so the thing failed. My purchase was a Acer aspire 5000 amd64 1.6mhz turion 448 mg of reported ram Installed is Ubuntu and thanks to a lot of support from a Wlug member I have a useful system. I need to hunt around for some vga drivers and some other programmes. So far I have run the machine for extended periods with a heat problem. It remains to be seen how it will respond to bounceing around in a truck for 100,000 miles or so Thank you for all your advise and help. Before you install Fedora 5...
by Ian McDonald 18 Mar '06

18 Mar '06

>From http://lwn.net/Articles/175793/ Fedora core 5 will (temporarily) break non-GPL modules [Posted March 16, 2006 by corbet] Many Fedora users are anxiously waiting for the Fedora Core 5 release, scheduled for Monday, March 20. Be warned that some of you may have to wait a little longer, however: the kernel shipped with FC5 effectively disallows the loading of any non-GPL modules. That behavior was a mistake, and a fix has already been made, but it is too late to get that fix into the initial FC5 release. So binary module users will want to wait until the first errata kernel is released (a few days, at most) before upgrading. -- Ian McDonald Web: http://wand.net.nz/~iam4 Blog: http://imcdnzl.blogspot.com WAND Network Research Group Department of Computer Science University of Waikato New Zealand

Looking for HDD
by Jodi Thomson 16 Mar '06

Hi Folks Am on the scrounge here We've had to send a drive off for data recovery. However it's a relatively recent model and the data recovery company has no parts for it, they need the heads. Therefore we are looking for a 'doner' drive that matches the following: Western Digital Caviar SATA 80GB Model: WD800JD - 60LSA0 (Last 6 Digits MUST be exact) Date of Manufacture: 16 OCT 2005 (give or take 1 month) We're willing to pay for a replacement. Does anyone have one of these lying around spare? Ran across this today regarding possible password leaks. http://www.ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=143334 You might want to review any existing Ubuntu servers pronto. While I didn't see these same values on my Debian Sarge server, that's only one data point. Now I'm off to check my Alpha server. Yet another reason to use temporary passwords when installing systems. Best Regards, Anthony Martin

Re: [wlug] Novell hopes its next desktop will leapfrog Windows -- IDEAS (a little long)
by Mathew Carley 11 Mar '06

11 Mar '06

>>"When Microsoft Vista ships it will catch up to us in a number of areas, but we'll enjoy six months where Novell's Linux desktop is in the lead," Well, I think Novell just needs to start cracking the cogs of it's marketing machine. Take out some Ad's on the telly. Do the Mozilla/ImpeachBush.org/open-source thing and take out full-pagers in (for example) the New Zealand Herald (Or Helsingin Sanomat, Iltalehti or YLE for that matter - not that linux isn't already well known here). I'm sure that Saatchi & Saatchi or Admark or even a company that uses OSS to develop its advertising would be able to come up with a half decent marketing campaign to cover the 6 months between SLED and Windows Vista's release. I remember at the Novell Conference in September 2004 at the Hilton in Auckland had a pretty good little movie that ran for a few minutes (if you were there, I'm talking about the one where they had the cartoon thing based on LOTR) - something like that targeting the main reasons to BUY Linux or buy a machine with Linux on it might work quite well... Even though Microsoft hasn't really pushed out any new consumer products (save the XBOX 360 and maybe a couple of other things) in the past 4, nearly 5 years, I still see their ads all over the world on TV, billboards, street-sign ads etc in Finland, Sweden, Estonia, New Zealand, Australia, Germany, Singapore, Japan, Netherlands, France/Monaco, Italy and where ever the hell else I have been lately. Microsoft's ads are always about "We help you do what it is you want to do... productivity in the office, we help your kids learn blah blah blah"... maybe if Novell can do a "We do all that too, with an interface that makes sense, and far less problems with Viruses and Spyware! Plus out search tools are better... this is prettier, that is better, you can still do everything you do on your MS OS and for a cheaper price!" At least here Linux is used in all the banking kiosks which are located next to most ATMs that are not outside, Public Libraries, Private/University Libraries, Info Kiosks, certain Government departments, CyberCafes (Ok, well they are coffee places like Starbucks, but they have free Internet or WiFi access if you buy a coffee)... and so on. The fact that Linux is fairly widely used in comparison has kind of provided an answer to the interface question, though: Most people don't give a toss what interface they are using, so long as it works. For example, Kirjasto Kymanen (the library next to the central railway station), The "Queue Up" computers are all Linux (not sure which distro) running KDE 3.3, with Firefox, aMSN, OpenOffice 1.x and a couple of other little apps. People just go on there to check email, do banking etc, and don't seem to have any trouble adapting from Windows to Linux to Mac to whatever. There are some Windows NT and XP machines available, as well as some Macs, but you have to reserve them specifically. Anyway, getting back to my original point: yes, Linux is technically superior. Yes, Mac OS is easier to use. But it's Microsoft thats been marketing it's arse off for the past 20 years getting hundreds of millions of consumers to buy their crap. Perhaps a few side deals with the top 5 OEMs helped but thats not what I am getting at. So, Novell, start marketing now (build up some hype a-la MS), get a "Think Secret"-style fan club/insider info source site and then do a fantastic release a-la Apple... perhaps do it differently, you know... Take out the Aotea Centre or something and do a big product release. Even better if you can get it on TV3 or the news or something. Have like... "NovCon 2006" or "Novell Consumer Fair" of some sort; you know; get your shit together. Maybe some free CDs or additional software... Even better if live-installation is included for those that buy the new NLED or something - all without erasing documents and so on (OK maybe some of this is not so feasible at something the size of what I am imagining) OR... Trade in your Microsoft Software (Windows/Office, non-pirate copies of course) for a FREE copy of NLED! Or how about getting someone like [insert random tv-personality here, I will choose Kerry Woodham because I know her from when I was a kid - or even John Campbell] to like, install and show off how pretty the new interface is... on like Good Morning New Zealand or Campbell Live or whatever shows are on these days... that covers your bored housewife demographic, depending on the time of day its shown. Partner with like, Dick Smith, Harvey Norman or someone like that to get it installed on new machines, or some other nation-wide chain that services computers (I don't know if DSE does this...) to get this up and running on some more machines. It can be done, it will more than likely cost some money, but I'm sure it would be worth it. Perhaps some Mom-and-pop style Computer Stores (SmartPC, Millennium Technology, PB Tech, any others I have missed) might like to partner with Novell too... tangible benefits? We all know Microsoft offers incentives, now, don't we! I'll end it here, I am sure you all get my drift :) -- Regards Mathew Carley **UUSI** Nopeita tietokonepalveluita ja ohjausta @ www.fingeekit.com (Avaamme pian!) Novell hopes its next desktop will leapfrog Windows
by Ian McDonald 09 Mar '06

09 Mar '06

By Ingrid Marson http://news.com.com/Novell+hopes+its+next+desktop+will+leapfrog+Windows/210… Story last modified Thu Mar 09 12:05:50 PST 2006 advertisement Novell on Thursday unveiled the features that will be available in the next version of its Linux desktop product--SuSE Linux Enterprise Desktop--which the company claims will be more usable than any other desktop product on the market. "We have made a big investment taking the Linux desktop past everybody. The usability work we've done is not to reinvent Windows, but to reinvent a better desktop," Greg Mancusi-Ungaro, Novell's director of marketing for Linux and open source, told ZDNet UK on Wednesday. "When Microsoft Vista ships it will catch up to us in a number of areas, but we'll enjoy six months where Novell's Linux desktop is in the lead," he said. The SUSE Linux Enterprise Desktop (SLED), which will be available beginning this summer, is a "big change for Linux" as it is now suitable for all enterprise users, according to Mancusi-Ungaro. "Up until now the Linux desktop has primarily been deployed in specialized circumstances--as a fixed-function workstation or as a transactional desktop," he said. "Now, for first time, we can tell you with confidence that it can be deployed for general office workers." Important new features in SLED include an animated user interface and integrated desktop search. Other features that Novell is touting in the product include the addition of support for Microsoft Excel Macros and Pivot Tables in OpenOffice.org, and full support for all standard network and printing protocols, allowing plug-and-play functionality for cameras, USB drives, personal music players and printers. The animated GUI takes advantage of the XGL graphics software, which Novell made available to the open-source community last month. The GUI makes the Linux desktop more usable, for example, by providing visual cues to users when they minimize windows, according to Mancusi-Ungaro. "When users minimize windows to the panel at the bottom of the screen they will see it move there rather than vanish, so users are more aware of where they have put something," he said. As for desktop search, although the Beagle tool is already available in SuSE Linux Professional 9.3, this is the first time that Novell is offering seven years' support around the product. Novell carried out hundreds of usability tests and shot almost 1,500 hours of user-interaction video to aid the design of SLED. It claimed that each feature of the product has been "rigorously tested and refined for usability to ensure the best possible performance in a business environment." The results of the usability tests can be viewed on Novell's Better Desktop Web site. Ingrid Marson of ZDNet UK reported from New York. Copyright (c)1995-2006 CNET Networks, Inc. Laptop considerations
by Mathew Carley 08 Mar '06

08 Mar '06

Might have to try that next time the machine powers off because I forget to open the window and let some snow and cold air in to my apartment ;-) The overheating was a real problem over the Summer (July/August/September) whilst I was in Bordeaux and Nice; because the laptop would power off just randomly if I wasn't giving it some airflow underneath by letting it sit on top of a pen (underneath where the fan is) or something - especially during the day. I kind of forgive it, though - I didn't feel like working in those temperatures either. Still, I don't know if I would recommend an Acer to anyone again... They have just kind of lost my trust. I have one client back in NZ who brought one about a year ago, and I never hear the end of it, as it too, sounds like its a dudd. Different model, though. Perhaps its just sub-NZ$2500 Acers :-( Long story short I am in the market for a new laptop as well, so it will be interesting to see what laptop is chosen here. Gavin Denby wrote: Sorry to hear about the issues, I have several acers and we had a similar but easily fixed problem. In my experience, I would not buy another Acer - especially a cheap one. Not because of the lack of Linux support (I've run several Debian Based distros including Breezy and Xandros, Suse 9, 10, Fedora and probably others without too much trouble). The main reason is the fact that I've had so many problems with the hardware; including the fact that my machine in particular is badly designed (very little airflow over the processor, which is prone to overheating - lucky I can just open the window, and because its -10 outside it cools down OK). I've had the motherboard and hard drive replaced (in the first year) and the second hard drive died just 3 weeks ago. Their 2-hour warranty service agreement is misleading (I used to work for an Acer reseller until about 3 years ago), if I unplug the speakers or a pair of headphones, there seems to be a short of some sort which causes the machine to just turn off... and... I'm sure there are other things too. It went in for warranty service (for periods up to a week, even if I drove to Auckland to hand-deliver the machine) I think 4 or 5 times in its first year. Perhaps I just got a lemon. I do remember someone else at an installfest a year ago having the same overheating problem that I did with the same model of laptop, though. Normally I wouldn't speak so badly of a product or brand, but this thing has just been ridiculous. Lucky for me I have just had the opportunity to acquire a nice Mac, so I'm happy about that. I'll be using this laptop as a media center in my apartment or something. Go for the Toshiba or something similar. I wish I had gone and got a Toshiba. I will put it this way: if the motherboard chipset is Intel, chances are most (if not all) of the bits and pieces attached will work in Linux. Not always true, but something I would use to gauge the likelihood of something working. Also, if you can get an ATi video processor on board, thats usually a good thing, right? Fujitsu Siemens are supposed to be OK, but I'm not sure about the differences between FS in Finland and FS in New Zealand (the same way that HP and NEC/Packard Bell are very different in quality between the USA/NZ and Japan/NZ respectively). As for the power brick - I dont think I have seen one for a laptop that is not capable of handling 100-250v and 50-60Hz, so it shouldn't be a problem. Keep in mind that the next Ubuntu will be coming out in a month or thereabouts, so perhaps if something doesn't work in Breezy 5.10, it might work in 6.04? Acceptable use of the WLUG Mailing List
by Meeting Reminder bot 28 Feb '06

28 Feb '06

The WLUG Mailing List is the discussion-list extension of the Waikato Linux Users Group (Incorporated). As such, we expect members of this list to adhere to the principles espoused in the official WLUG Charter[1], in particular, Rule 6, which covers the activities on this mailing list. While this is an Acceptable Use Policy, the WLUG Committee do recognise the need for informal discussion among list members, and draconian administration is not the goal here. Please keep in mind, however, that your comments to this list do represent the WLUG, and while it is good to be seen as an organisation with a sense of humour, some comments may do major harm to our credibility as a serious advocate of GNU/Linux and all things Free Software/ Open Source related. List discussion should * be honest * accentuate the positive, without hyperbole or blatant misrepresentation * maintain a reasonable level of spelling and grammar * not indulge in ad hominem attacks * not continue inflammatory or abusive threads * not be unprofessional or petty, especially with respect to the names of other software companies * not promote or denigrate political, cultural, or religious views * not indulge in marketing or advertising, other than on a private sale basis, or advertising of jobs - which may be announced once only * not reproduce copyrighted material without permission from the copyright holder * not defame any person or organisation Posters who consistently violate these guidelines will be dealt with at the discretion of the List Maintainer. If you feel you have been unfairly dealt with, you have recourse to any member of the WLUG Committee[2]. Certain mailing list etiquette should also be maintained: * please use only plain text (not HTML) * reply inline or below when quoting, rather than on top * trim quotes (don't reply quoting a 10 page message with a single line of reply) If you have any questions, start reading at http://www.gweep.ca/~edmonds/usenet/ml-etiquette.html. These points have been established over a long time on this list. If you want to question them, please do it off list. As list users, use your discretion when pulling people up over etiquette - please reply off list, and if there is a serious breach, the list administrator will probably have dealt with it off-list already. Last nights meeting

Thanks to Peter Bryant for an excellent meeting last night about his Linux VPS company, Rimu Hosting. If you're interested in buying (root!) access to a virtual private server, check out http://www.rimuhosting.com/. Before the meeting, I ran a video demonstrating Xgl, Novell's 3D-accelerated desktop technology. We talked briefly about this and Red Hat's upcoming technology, AIGLX. If you're interested, there is a good article that explains the difference between the approaches: http://www.freesoftwaremagazine.com/newsletters/accelerated_x/index_p1.html The video I showed is at http://pubcrawler.org/2006/02/23/jaw-dropping-xgl-demo/. Try this as your /etc/ppp/options - works for me with that modem === cut here === lock noauth defaultroute ipcp-max-configure 65 ipcp-accept-local ipcp-accept-remote idle 600 === cut here === Cheers John Thanks John I put that in on Thursday morning and tried it three times during the day. It connected first time every time. I typed out a reply and got called away in the middle of it. Came back a few minutes later and went to send it.... but it had dropped the line again. This time it would not connect again. Sounds like it was having trouble negotiating protocols. I have a speaker on the phone line as part of my job is fixing modems to component level. These ones aren't plug in! No involvement on software level! I had tried another modem in before when I had the problem of not connecting and had no joy, then the hard drive gave up. Went from tap tap to get it to start spinning at times to suddenly can't find /dev/HDD... during use. Might be worth swapping the modem again when I get time. " If you want to try Ubuntu, I wrote a script to get this modem set up under it which you may find handy. Of course, I make no guarantees regarding my scripting abilities... Regards, Bnonn " Thanks Bnonn I got the modem working under Breezy already. It was well written up on the Ubuntu wiki. I also got it working on the updated kernel, I just have to figure out how to stop it from connecting during boot, about the time in the sequence it says " Setting the clock to ntp Ubuntu... it starts to dial, before log in! Then asks for password to disconnect :-) Thanks anyway I will keep playing with it and see what hapens Regards David Bowen

Text encoding
by Bnonn 23 Feb '06

23 Feb '06

Hi everyone. I have created a large text file which is essentially a concatenated bunch of emails. I simply selected the emails in Evolution with shift-click, and went "Save As". I can open the file fine in nano, or I can cat it without problems. It has a lot of useless crap markup, but that's to be expected. However, I'm completely unable to open it in gedit; I just get the error that gedit couldn't determine the correct character encoding. I've tried manually selecting all the various UTF and Western encodings without luck; the only one that will open at all is UTF-16, which renders the file as a lot of Japanese-looking text. Any ideas? Regards, Bnonn

Modem dropping
by David Bowen 21 Feb '06

21 Feb '06

Hi I am having a problem with the modem dropping while connecting to the net. (ihug) This is an Intel 536 modem on Mandrake 10.1 It dials, says expecting connect, then, starting pppd, and a few seconds later the modem drops the line, and some seconds later a dialogue box comes up and says Kpppd daemon died unexpectedly error 17 Kppd manual says that error 17 is a to do with loop back detected so the following part of the log would seem to be relevant. Postfix rules.
by Oliver Jones 15 Feb '06

15 Feb '06

Hi Guys. I recently setup postfix on my new server and have configured it to be rather strict when accepting mail. It has done wonders for reducing the amount of spam the server accepts. Ie, the volume of spam I now get has dropped to nearly zero without the need for tools like SpamAssassin. However legit mail is also being rejected. With good reason though, usually the sending host has fucked up DNS entries or is identifying itself with an invalid hostname during SMTP HELO/EHLO. Anyone else here use postfix? If so what are your smtpd_*_restrictions set to? Have you had to loosen your rules to allow valid mail sources that are badly configured though? What sort of policies do you have in place? What other alternatives to "reject_unknown_client" are there? Advice, help, suggestions most certainly welcome. Regards

From: Andi Mann [mailto:amann(a)enterprisemanagement.com] Sent: Tuesday, 14 February 2006 10:36 a.m. To: secretary(a)wlug.org.nz Subject: Linux Management Survey Results Hi, You might remember in November last year, I asked for assistance from you and members of the Waikato Linux Users Group for our research on the cost and effort involved in managing Linux server environments. Your members' responses to our web survey were added to a wide-ranging random telephone survey and in-depth interviews to get a vendor-neutral look at Linux system management. Well, the study is complete now, and I promised to send it to you when it was done. You can get the executive summary from OSDL's web site at http://osdl.org/newsroom/studies/EMA, and the full PDF is available at the web site of the main sponsor (Levanta) at http://www.levanta.com/linuxstudy/. Please feel free to pass these links along to your members, at your discretion. Both the summary and the full report are available free of charge. I want to thank you again for your help with collecting primary data for this study. Due to the anonymous nature of the web survey, I cannot be sure that your members contributed, but I am sure they will be interested to see the results anyway. If you have any questions or comment, please feel free to contact me. Regards, Andi Mann Senior Analyst Enterprise Management Associates.

Gnome Applet question
by Leslie Katz 18 Jan '06

18 Jan '06

I'm using Gnome v 2.8.2. Among the Gnome applets available to be added to my top or bottom panel is one called "Stock Ticker". I'd like to use that applet, but I'd only like to have it open while the stock exchange is open. At other times I'd like to have it closed. I added the applet to one of my panels and then configured it as I liked. I then removed it and re-added it (without having shut my computer down in the interim). On re-adding the applet, I discovered that all of the preferences I'd earlier set for it had disappeared. If, on the other hand, I shut down my computer without having removed the applet and then restarted it, the applet re-appeared with all of my preferences intact. I read a lot of material about Gconf, its GUI editor and gconftool-2. By playing around with those things, I discovered the following: the Stock Ticker applet gets assigned a number when added to the panel, say, applet_3. If I remove the applet and then re-add it, it comes back as applet_4. That's the reason, no doubt, why my preferences disappear when I close the applet--they were attached to applet_3 only. Applet_4's preferences are the default ones for whenever the Stock Ticker's first opened. I need a way to change the default preferences for the Stock Ticker so that, whenever it's opened, it opens with my preferences, not the built-in ones, but finding it's beyond me. Does anyone have any suggestions as to how I can change the Stock Ticker's default preferences permanently, so that, each time it's opened, it opens with my preferences?

OSS Software for SOHO?
by Greig McGill 10 Jan '06

10 Jan '06

Hi all, A friend is considering starting her own small business, and has asked me what the state of F/OSS packages for small businesses in NZ? She is specifically looking for (in order of priority): * Meeting the requirements of her accountant (any accountants on the list? What requirements are there? I don't know! :) * As complete and featureful as possible. * Runs on Windows. This last one is really not a problem, as I have told her there will be no problem obtaining a Linux or *BSD workstation specifically to run her business applications, and she likes the idea of the separation, as her kids and partner are fiddlers! :) Anyone done this? Olly? I vaguely remember you were playing with MYOB alternatives? I'd be very interested in hearing from any accountants lurking on this list also as to how hard it makes your job if your clients aren't running something "standard" like MYOB? Regards, Greig McGill

Getting user to choose whether to exit bash script
by Leslie Katz 02 Jan '06

02 Jan '06

I've created a number of bash scripts which make it easier for me to run particular security applications, among them rkhunter. I run the scripts in gnome-terminal. It's crucial to say at the outset that I've had no tuition in bash script writing, so I'm sure my scripts won't win any beauty contest. In any event, I was happy with my script for running rkhunter, except for one thing. I had great difficulty reading part of the output of the script, because that output (from rkhunter itself) was in yellow on a white background. I then figured out how to write a script that opened a second window in gnome-terminal. That second window had a black background, in which my original script for running rkhunter then ran. Legibility of the yellow and all other output in the second window is fine. However, there's a problem. When my script for running rkhunter in the second window finishes, it automatically exits, leaving me back at the first window, so that I haven't got a chance to examine the rkhunter output except as it scrolls by rapidly in the second window. I therefore want to amend my script for running rkhunter so that it doesn't end until the user says so. In a number of places on the Web appears the following script, which I thought I could borrow: #!/bin/bash # Shows how to read a line from stdin echo "Would you like to exit this script now?" read answer if [ "$answer" = y ] then echo "Exiting..." exit 0 fi I tried that script. There's a tiny problem with it. It exits no matter what answer the user gives! The only difference between giving a "y" answer and any other answer is that the word "Exiting" doesn't appear if one doesn't give a "y" answer. How should I amend my script to keep the output on the screen until the user enters some appropriate input?

Fonts on Ubuntu.
by Oliver Jones 02 Jan '06

02 Jan '06

Hi Folks. I've switched to Ubuntu Breezy from FC4 on my laptop. Everything is going swimmingly. However one thing is odd. Fonts. The fonts in Ubuntu on webpages and apps don't appear quite the same as on FC4. I've installed the MS TT Core fonts package so I have Arial, Tahoma et al installed. But things still look different. Things look clearer in some apps (I think this is the freetype2 hinting setting at work) which is nice but other apps are ugly. Particularly GTK+ v1 apps are all jaggy. Also some websites don't look the same as I'm used to. Like as if the Arial fonts arn't being used.... Anyway, sage advice on fonts in Ubuntu would be apreciated. Regards, PS: Happy New Year

mythtv question
by Jonathan Purvis 02 Jan '06

I've installed MythTV (0.18.1-5) under Ubuntu 5.10. Under the Video Source setup option in mythtv-set, the XMLTV listings grabber has no option for New Zealand. There doesn't seem to be any way of changing what's in the list, other than recompiling from source. Is there any way of configuring MythTV without using the gui or other option for specifying where to get the NZ TV listings? I don't seem to be able to procede without it. Regards, Jon

Superfluous files?
by Leslie Katz 29 Dec '05

29 Dec '05

I first used chkrootkit recently. It categorised certain files of mine as suspicious. I understand that it did so because those files were hidden ones, but were not in my home directory. Many of the files chkrootkit called suspicious were connected with earlier kernels that I hadn't uninstalled, so I uninstalled those kernels. That reduced chkrootkit's list of suspicious files significantly. One of the files still on the list was associated with Firefox v 1.0.4. (I use Firefox 1.0.7.) On investigation, I found that in /usr/lib I had three directories, each connected with a version of Firefox earlier than the current one. Is there any risk involved in deleting the three directories?

22 Dec '05

2006 - Dunedin, NZ! linux.conf.au is the annual Australian Linux technical conference, and is one of the largest gatherings of users and developers of Free and Open Source Software in the Southern Hemisphere. It is an opportunity for developers and groups to present their ideas amongst peers, and for the Free Software and Open Source communities to gather in general. Summary: There's just over a month to go until linux.conf.au 2006 begins! The 2006 conference is being held in Dunedin, New Zealand, at The University of Otago[1]. More information can be found on the conference website: http://lca2006.linux.org.au/ A "heads up" from the linux.conf.au 2006 Organising team. With just over a month to go before the start of linux.conf.au 2006, we feel it's time to let those that have not heard, hear, and give those that have a reminder that time to register is running short. linux.conf.au 2006 will be held at the University of Otago in the remarkable city of Dunedin, New Zealand from the 23rd - 28th of January 2006. With just over 200 seats left, that are filling fast, you'll need to decide soon if you're going to join us for the best LCA yet! If you're worried about accommodation, We still have over 200 beds available at University College, the student residential hall we've organised for the duration of the conference. As usual, the first two days of the conference are occupied by Miniconfs - This year we have a great selection: * Debian Miniconf * Education Miniconf * Embedded Miniconf * Gnome.conf.au Miniconf * Linux Digital Arts Miniconf * Openoffice.org Miniconf * Open Source Developers Workshop * SysAdmin Miniconf Along with the above Miniconfs[1], we have an excellent program[2] full of the worlds best and brightest speakers[3] covering a diverse range of subjects that we're sure will have something to offer anyone with Linux in their blood. Thanks for having us, and especially to Jamie for being co-opted back onto the committee for the day. We didn't quite get perfect weather, but there was still much cricket played. Turnout wasn't hugely inspiring; there were a good number of committee and hangers-on, but the number of "general WLUG members" wasn't that great. Different answers when trying to learn file numbers
by Leslie Katz 15 Dec '05

15 Dec '05

Thanks both to Oliver and to Aristotle for taking the trouble to reply to my query. I'll have to take Aristotle's word that the difference between my second and third results, as implied by Oliver, was caused by /proc and /sys "files", since I don't know how to act on Oliver's suggestion to exclude those "directories" from my command. I printed out and tried to read the entire man page for "find", but that didn't overcome my ignorance. Thanks again, Leslie

Different answers when trying to learn file numbers
by Leslie Katz 13 Dec '05

13 Dec '05

I wanted to discover the number of files on my system. I found on the Web the suggestion that the way to do so was to type in the Terminal, as user, "find / \! -type -d | wc -l" and then press "Enter". I did that. The names of quite a few files appeared on the screen, each with the words "Permission denied" after it, and then, ultimately, the number 153,406. I decided to issue the command as root instead, to see what happened. No file names appeared on the screen as they had before. I just got the number 154,821. That was 1,415 more than earlier, though the number of filenames which had appeared with "Permission denied" the first time round was nowhere near as many as 1,415. I next edited my sudoers file, so that, as user, I didn't need to enter a password in order to run "find". I then typed, as user, "sudo", followed by the command I'd typed twice before. That time, I got the number 154,722. Can anyone explain to me why I've been getting the different results that I have?

I don't know how much ASB had to do with the push for alternative browser support but I know it is something the developers of the Fastnet site were trying to do. I can't say for sure but most likely they are running Firefox themselves. Any in house stuff we do gets tested with IE, Firefox and Opera, and I've been pushing for Safari testing as well. Of those, supporting IE gives us the most trouble. Matt

Internet Banking

Hi I remember some postings some months ago about not being able to log on to the ASB unless using Internet explorer. I heard today that Firefox 1.5 was able to log in. I tried it and it does. (under windows at least) I will try under Linux tomorrow. Yeh one less reason for using windows!! Another thing I haven't seen posted is an article I found in the Post DB Open Source Project, Run by an editor of the Bangkok Post, found here http://postdb.ricshreves.net/archives/ An interesting link to the NBR where The New Zealand State Service Commission is promoting use of the Open Source Content Management System Plone for other agencies. The story can be found here http://www.nbr.co.nz/home/column_article.asp?id=13734&cid=3&cname=Technology Maybe the politicians are listening? Regards David Bowen

ssh and cat problem
by Bnonn 08 Dec '05

08 Dec '05

Hi again everyone. In my continuing quest to automate absolutely everything about rebuilding one of my computers, I'm writing a script that will generate a key relationship between it and my laptop (which I use for remote backup sometimes). I'm able to create the public and private keys without problems, but when it gets to adding the public key to the laptop ("scarlet"), I run into an issue. I don't want to just copy the public key into ~/.ssh/authorized_keys2 on scarlet, because from an aesthetic point of view, and a portability point of view, that's just nasty. If authorized_keys2 exists already, I'll overwrite it and cause myself pain. So, I instead copy the public key into my home dir on scarlet (scp ~/.ssh/id_dsa.pub bnonn(a)scarlet:~/) However, I then want to append the contents of this key to the authorized_keys2 file in ~/.ssh/ on scarlet. Seems to me that the best way to do this is to simply cat it, since this will create the file if it doesn't already exist. I'm using the following command: ssh bnonn(a)scarlet cat ~/id_dsa.pub >> ~/.ssh/authorized_keys2 This, however, appears to have no effect at all. It doesn't return an error; it just quietly does nothing. Again, I apologize if this is again an example of my fundamental dimness, but any help would be appreciated. Regards, Bnonn

1/packet writing for cd 2/formating flash memory stick
by stephen pearce 08 Dec '05

08 Dec '05

Hi Can anyone help me here please. 1/ How do you do incremental writing to a cdrw under linux. I have a cdrw which was formated under windows .. used the INCDFS file system according to the properties report in wondows. With this I can then write, and delete files from the cd .. within windows .. as if it was a large floppy or removable hard disk. Under Fedora Core 4 the disk mounts ok and I can read the contents at anytime .. but I cannot do the incremental writing .. I have looked up linux references to this INCDFS using google and not found anything of significance. Any pointers to making cdrw work more adeptly would be appreciated. 2/ My 64Mb and 128 MB usb memory sticks mount fine under fedora core 4 and I can delete and write to the devices .. deleting I think puts the data into a trash directory .. but when I empty trash it does not seem to free space on the device .. also .. although ".Trash" appears when you mount it in Windows .. and you can delete the files and reclaim the space there .. .Trash does not appear in the Linux FS .. even using say mc which would normerly show ".--" directories . Also formating the flash memory does not seem straight forward .. I tried mounting with fdisk and deleting all partitions, making a siingle FAT32 partition .. then using format to format it .. unsuccessfully ... are there any tricks here? Formating under windows seems straight forward. Thanks Stephen

Adept crash- graceful resolution to debconf
by Chris O'Halloran 08 Dec '05

08 Dec '05

Having converted from Suse9.2 to Kubuntu I have appreciated the Adept front end to dpkg. However the other day, it locked up my machine so I crashed out of X and rebooted the system. However whenever I start Adept now it mentions that another process is in effect and that I need root permissions to run Adept. Having run Adept as root it still won't let me install further packages and when I try it reports debconf:DbDriver "config" /var/cache/debconf/config.dat dpkg:status database area is locked by another process dpkg run finished I assume the file "config" is locked by the aborted Adept process. I was wondering what the graceful way of resolving this problem Delete config.dat? BTW, I have been pretty impressed with Kubuntu Cheers Chris

nvidia-glx-legacy has gone from bad to worse
by zcat 07 Dec '05

07 Dec '05

When I first upgraded to breezy I was mildly annoyed that the nvidia drivers broke, I had to install nvidia-legacy instead, and that all of the openGL stuff stopped working although the driver appeared to be loading and xorg seems to think everything is in order. Programs like glxgears would tell me I didn't have GLX. Programs like mplayer would work with "-vo xv" which was good enough most of the time so I didn't worry about it too much. Just recently I thought I would try to sort this out properly. I removed all of the 'restricted' modules and glx stuff, including config, via synaptic, then cleanly reinstalled the nvidia-legacy kernel modules and nvidia-glx-legacy package. Now glxgears exits with a segfault. Worse, so does mplayer even when I use -vo xv and even if I'm trying to play some audio-only file (or even no file at all!) Where to I even begin trying to find out what's messed up and how to fix it?!

no audio input sources
by Jonathan Purvis 06 Dec '05

06 Dec '05

Aleisha's computer has a SoundBlaster Audigy and a fresh install of Kubuntu 5.10. When i load Audacity or any other sound recording program, no input sources are available. Where you'd expect to see "Microphone", "Line In", etc, the list is empty. If i turn up the volume on the microphone in alsamixer, i can hear it through the speakers. arecord claims to be recording, but the resulting .wav file is silent. Audio playback is fine with every program i've tried. Also on my computer with an nForce2 chipset, i can record via line in, but not microphone. This might be due to me plugging in a mono microphone plug into it and shorting something out. (Computer microphones seem to use a stero plug to provide power to the microphone.) Does anyone have any ideas? Thanks, Jon

Next meeting: Christmas Barbeque
by Craig Box 06 Dec '05

06 Dec '05

Hi everyone, The December WLUG meeting will be the annual end of year barbeque. This year the barbeque will be on Sunday 18 December, starting at around 2pm. The venue is the same as last time - Perry and Jamie's, 3 Liston Crescent. Due to the closeness to Christmas there will be no postponement if it's wet. Please check the website and mailing list before coming if you're in any way concerned about the weather. Please bring yourselves, partners [1], meat, alcohol, topics of conversation [2], and a passing interest in backyard cricket. WLUG will provide salad, bread and soft drinks as usual. You don't have to be a member to come to the barbeque, but if you aren't, it would be a really nice gesture to bring your $20 and sign up, wouldn't it? Hope to see you all there. Craig [1] Not all topics of conversation at WLUG barbeques are suitable for children. Some aren't even suitable for us. [2] Some comment was made in the last survey about some of the members being 'cliquey'. Two things are at play here; a lot of the WLUG regulars are friends outside of WLUG, and a lot of people go to barbeques and have weekends to get away from computers. Please don't expect all the topic to be about Linux. Probably, most of it will be about backyard cricket. Most of the people involved are easy to talk to, so please strike up conversations, and if there's anything that can be done to make the barbeque better, feel free to suggest it to someone who looks official.

Desktop internet dialler in Ubuntu 5.10
by Glenn Ramsey 05 Dec '05

05 Dec '05

Hi, In the weekend I installed Ubuntu 5.10 on my Dad's PC to replace Mandrake which didn't have support for all his hardware. It seems to have everything he needs except a sensible internet dialler. I was able to connect to the Internet by using the "Network settings" gui to configure the ISP parameters and then activate the modem device. But that seems like an odd way to dial up and isn't particularly obvious. I then installed GnomePPP but it didn't work. After some searching I discovered that it needs to have wvdial set up but that didn't work either due to the restrictive permissions of /etc/ppp/*secrets, and the wvdial man page just says "yeah we know about that and don't have a solution". I could probably fix that but I was expecting it to "just work". Whats up with that? I expected that an internet dialler frontend would have been part of the basic functionality. Did I screw up the installation in some way? I don't remember answering any questions that pertained to this. Glenn -- Glenn Ramsey <glenn(a)componic.co.nz> 07 8627077 http://www.componic.co.nz

help with network connection please
by John Torrance 05 Dec '05

I have installed Breezy badger on my other computer and was working well - I then moved the computer upstairs and now cannot connect to the network that I have. I had the same problem with windows and fixed this by changing the speed from 100BaseT full duplex to 10BaseT full duplex. I think that the problem is the poor quality of the network cable. How do I change the connection speed with Ubuntu? I am a newbie so will need simple instructions Thanks John

Acceptable use of the WLUG Mailing List
by Meeting Reminder bot 30 Nov '05

30 Nov '05

As list users, use your discretion when pulling people up over etiquette - please reply off list, and if there is a serious breach, the list administrator will probably have dealt with it off-list already. sudo and writing to /var/log
by Bnonn 30 Nov '05

30 Nov '05

Hi everyone, I'm writing a small script to automate backing up to a remote machine using rsync. As part of the script, I'm directing stdout from rsync to /var/log/b.netbackup.log. The problem I'm having is in actually outputting said stdout. I run all my scripts with user privileges only, escalating to root only those commands within the script that need it. This has various benefits in my eyes: 1. Principle of least privilege; why run a whole script as root when you can just run certain bits of it? 2. No need to error-check UID=0 3. Anyone in the sudoers group can run the script. So normally I just type the script name from the dollar prompt, rather than sudoing it. Inside the script itself, rsync is run with sudo, so as to both read certain files in /etc/ which have 0600 umasks, and also to be able to output to the log file in /var/log. HOWEVER You would think (or at least, I do) that something like "sudo rsync options source destination >> /var/log/logfile" would NOT give you a permission denied error. Similarly with "sudo date > /var/log/logfile". But you would be dead wrong. Running the entire script with sudo (ie, sudo b.netbackup) will work fine, as will running it from a hash prompt. Anyone got any ideas why I can't write to a log file using sudo? Hopefully it isn't something really obvious that will demonstrate my fundamental lack of understanding of how Linux works... Regards, Bnonn

I was taking that into account actually, they still aren't quite up to IHUG in terms of latency but it's nowhere near as bad as it used to be. I suspect IHUG already deprioritised P2P which would seem true if you try and use port 6881 for anything ;) Before Orcon started doing that they were having delays of up to 6000ms at peak times hitting overseas servers. It was virtually unusable for any real time applications (i.e. like gaming). Thankfully things have improved a lot now and the difference is slight. Matt

Not to belittle Orcon's support of the LUG or their great no-cap policy but from my own experience and a group of Orcon/IHUG users I know, Orcon's latencies are a little lacking at times compared with IHUG's. This isn't a dig at Orcon, in fact more power to them I'd say. My respect for them has grown too hearing they are supporting the LUG. The truth is, most people would probably not even notice but it's better to say it up front now rather than have those few to whom low latencies matter switch only to have some trouble. I blame all the heavy downloaders that love Orcon's no-cap plans personally. One other thing worth mentioning, Orcon probably loses money on consumer broadband as most ISPs do. If you really want to support them financially, buy their dialup, tolls or hosting services. Matt Browne

hoiho moving - service disruption
by Matt Brown 25 Nov '05

25 Nov '05

Hi All, As many of you probably know from previous posts to the list earlier this week hoiho's current hosting arrangements are coming to an end. Over the weekend we'll be moving hoiho from its current home at Tintz Digital to the Orcon Internet datacentre. Unfortunately most services offered by hoiho (HTTP, SMTP, POP, IMAP, etc) may be unavailable at various times over the course of the weekend. We are endeavouring to keep downtime to a minimum of course! Hoiho should be back up and running at full steam in its new home from mid Monday morning onwards. I'm sure I speak for everyone in the LUG when I extend a big thank you to Tintz for their generous hosting of hoiho to this point, and also to Orcon Internet for taking over the hosting of hoiho at this point. Sorry for the late notice about this change. If you have any questions or urgent problems over the weekend my contact details are below and please feel free to contact me. problems connecting to the website
by Raymond Burgess 23 Nov '05

23 Nov '05

Hey All. I have been having a lot of trouble connecting to the Wlug website recently. It's been at least a week, mayeb two since I remember being able to connect. I'm having the same problems from the Office and at home. I tried it from Olivers place last night and he also couldn't connect. Oliver has a different ISP. As I'm in Melbourne all of these attempts would probably use the same link to reach to New Zealand. All of these attempts where using Firefox. I have now attempted to view the site from a couple of US based machines using lynxs and from home using links and have had better success, although not what I expected. One of the US machines complained initially with [socket failed: family 10 addr 2002:d237:12fa::1 port 80.] this is probably due to having a badly setup ipv6 config. It then falls back to using ipv4 and works, but at bytes per second, 100 *bytes* per second. Which is very very slow. I see the same speed from the other machines, no ipv6 error tho. Has there been any changes made tot he server config in the last month? I know that another wlug list member was having trouble connecting earlier in the year which I think was resolved once their ISP fixed up some routing issue. I no longer have any NZ based shell accounts so I can't do any further testing, I assume it's ok inside NZ otherwise someone would have mentioned something earlier. Does anyone have any suggestions for diagnosing connectivity issues like these? I guess a step by step process for diagnosing such things would make a good page for the Wiki. Raymond

21 Nov '05

Folks, What do people use mainly? I was going to use Dia from Gnome but this project doesn't seem to be moving ahead so going to use kivio. I will update the Wiki with what I find. Requirements: - vector based as doing diagrams rather than pictures - ability to export to a format suitable for LaTeX (EPS or similar should be fine). Cool process utility
by Craig Box 18 Nov '05

18 Nov '05

Hate having processes die because of kernel upgrades? The thought of losing your irssi scrollback just too much for you? http://cryopid.berlios.de/ Compile (I needed zlib1g-dev on my Ubuntu machine which had build-essentials installed) and then run 'freeze' to save processes to disk. You start the process again by executing the file that it saves - there is no 'thaw' utility It can't save a screen session, but you can save the processes inside them and rescreen. Craig

NAT rule entry for DSL-302G modem

Thats been my downfall _many_ a time. Many thanks! The D-Link document, "Opening Ports in DSL-302G Modem", makes no reference to doing a separate save, but implies that clicking on "submit" once you've added your rule equals saving. As a result of what you wrote, I went back and read the modem manual. It wasn't very clear either about what you do once you've created a NAT rule, but other parts of it led me to believe that, when I'd added my rule, I should go to "Administration", "Save & Reboot" and then press "Save". I did that and now my rule survives powering off. Thanks again.

NAT rule entry for DSL-302G modem
by Leslie Katz 16 Nov '05

16 Nov '05

I'm sorry to bother people about this again. What I thought was a solution to an earlier problem turns out not to have been a permanent one. I wanted to open some ports in the above modem, but couldn't access the modem's internal web server using Firefox for Linux. I was, however, able to do so using Internet Explorer (on my dual-boot computer) and to create an appropriate NAT rule. Then, when I restarted the computer and booted into Linux, the rule I'd created in Windows persisted in Linux. However, when I later powered the computer (and modem) down and then powered up again, the rule I'd created was gone. Since the WLUG wiki page on the modem referred to using the CLI and to some material about doing so, I got that material and studied it. I then did the following: - booted into Windows; - (re)created my NAT rule via the Web interface; - restarted in Linux; - tested the rule, which worked; - opened the CLI and issued the command to get me the rule, which worked; - issued the command to delete the rule, which worked; - issued the command to (re)create the rule, which failed. Here's the output: ******************* Welcome to Titanium ******************* D-Link Corp., Software Release R2.01M.B34.AU(021206a/T93.3.44) Copyright (c) 2001-2002 by D-Link Corp. login: admin password: Login Successful $get nat rule entry ruleid 2 Rule Id : 2 Flavor : REDIRECTION Interface : ALL Protocol : ANY Local addr from : 10.1.1.3 Local addr to : 10.1.1.3 Dest addr from : 0.0.0.0 Dest addr to : 255.255.255.255 Global addr from : 0.0.0.0 Global addr to : 0.0.0.0 Dest port from : 5235 Dest port to : 5237 Local port : 0 $delete nat rule entry ruleid 2 Entry Deleted $create nat rule entry ruleid 2 rdr destportfrom 5235 destportto 5237 lcladdrfro m 10.1.1.3 lcladdrto 10.1.1.3 Error: Invalid command $ I then rebooted into Windows and tried to (re)create the rule via telnet. Again, I got the invalid command message. I then tried simply to create a rule which appeared in the material about using the CLI. It wouldn't work either. If anyone can give any suggestion about what I'm doing wrong, I'd be very grateful. Thanks. I don't know what I'm doing wrong.

Installing Skype on Ubuntu [Rant]
by Mathew Carley 15 Nov '05

15 Nov '05

It seems to be to have more "stuff" with it: which may or may not be a good thing, depending on your opinion. Apps and Eye candy are also a bit helpful in the choice: not just for me, either. I will put it this way... with the exception of MPlayer (matter of preference for media players) and programs like Skype, there is very little else that needs to be installed on a brand-spanking new install of SuSE, and most of the dependancies for these programs (except maybe the Win32 codecs for MPlayer) are already included and configured with the System. As I said, I still like Ubuntu, and am now considering running Ubuntu on my laptop (lightweight distro, at least, until I put some more RAM in it) and SuSE on my desktop (When I build it). It is possible that I am biased because I am more familiar with SuSE than I am with Ubuntu - it is the distro that rescued me from the "Red Hat = Linux" mindset (RH was what I had been using for most of my "Linux life"). It is also the distro of choice when I install Linux for other people (if not only for the eye candy. In saying that, though, I don't see why I can't resurrect some old hardware with the aide of Ubuntu, given that SuSE can be a heavyweight on old systems, if the people whom I am moving off of Windows don't want to buy a Mac Mini or something. So yeah: After using Breezy for a couple of days, I do now like Ubuntu as a distro; despite my being a sucker for eye-candy, though if I end up using it more than a week (quite likely at this point), then I'll start customizing Gnome with some themes and custom icons and all that. Consider my rant over. I now like Ubuntu more than I did the other day. But I still like KDE as well - I'm sure I can add it on somehow (I use both UIs... they both have certain features I like about each one, so...) When I have time... Linux for Grandmother
by Mathew Carley 15 Nov '05

15 Nov '05

Going on from my previous post, would you all mind if I sent my grandmother to the next installfest and/or meeting? I threw together a SuSE 9.1 Personal system on an old box just before I left NZ, and they took the box home from my parents place the other day. What they seem to use the computer for is: Internet Email Office (Writer, Calc, Impress mostly). Is there a publisher equivalent that you would recommend? I hate publisher myself, but... yeah. Not a whole lot else. I don't mind whether you leave SuSE on the box or if you "upgrade" it to Breezy, I am happy to support either from the other side of the globe. It needs to have **A VNC server installed and configured for me to be able to do this as well, so... yeah. **A nice, easy, clean, pretty interface. **I don't think it would have to be too similar to Windows 98. Box specification is (as I said, old) Cel366/128/6GB/CD, Modem, Sound Blaster 16... Used to be in mums shop before she upgraded. I'm sure she wouldn't mind paying for some tuition as well, but I have made the suggestion that she might go there. -- Regards Mathew Carley HostENZ Data Services A Carley Network Media Ltd. Hello, I have set up a Phpwiki using my Suse Linux Box on the company lan and using Apache, Php, MySql using the code from the Phpwiki site. I've manage to get it all going quite nicely many of the staff are keen to use it as a collaborative documentation site for keeping each other informed of the latest technical information available or the gotcha's you find working with different manufacturers equipment. I've got the linking to other pages, webpages and email addresses working fine. What I was know wanting to know was how to link to various documents etc we might have on our servers. It's an MS Active directories network. I can link to documents I put on the webserver easily enough but what about P:\Library\Electrical\Transpower\Standards\ABC.pdf Any hints appreciated. Re: [wlug] Installing Skype on Ubuntu [Rant]

> > > Here's why I'm a bit frustrated at the moment with Ubuntu: > > >>I think it's a bit short sighted to blame your problems on a Ubuntu when > >>the problem is caused by a non-free application being distributed in > >>binary only form. The blame should be appropriately placed with Skype. You are quite right, perhaps I should have "blamed" Skype for the lack of appropriate support for a still young (yet surprisingly mature) distro. Keeping in mind it was a bit of a rant as to why (in this particular instance) I prefer(red) SuSE, and also this install of Ubuntu was to revive/choke out the last life of this laptops hard drive, and is not of any real importance, shall we say. I have since installed breezy, and had Skype working within minutes, all appropriate packages downloaded through Synaptic (yay no dpkg!) and so on. I've even changed totem-gstreamer to totem-xine with xine-ui and was able to get the multimedia stuff working quite quickly. I must say, 6 months of obviously hard work has made a huge difference to Ubuntu, and I must congratulate all who develop in and around it. > I wanted to install Skype. Skype is a KDE app, (and it looks ugly in > > Gnome - there are workarounds, but aside from that). It requires > > libqt3-xxxxxxxx. > > > > Firstly, I was trying to install it from the .deb package distributed > > on skype.com <http://skype.com> (skype_1.2.0.18-1_i386). > > >>Luckily, as fulfilling as it is to be a Free software zealot and say > >>it's all Skype's fault there are more pragmatic members of the community > >>who are happy to put time and effort into make non-free software like > >>Skype work seemlessly. My experience with Hoary was not nearly as pleasant as the one with Breezy. I must say that I much prefer Breezy over Hoary (surprised) and it is so much quicker than SuSE 9.3, but this may be due to the light-weight nature of the distro and the fact that I have bugger all installed on a clean (but slowly dying) hard drive and clean /home partition. To get Skype working nicely on Ubuntu you need to look no further than > the Ubuntu Guide (http://ubuntuguide.org) which links to nicely > built .debs for Ubuntu that I've used successfully from Warty -> Hoary > and now for Breezy. > > See specifically http://ubuntuguide.org/#skype Correct. Once again - instructions worked fine with Breezy, but not so well with Hoary. After reading the rest of your email and the packages you installed I'm > surprised that your box still works at all! So was I. In fact, I went so far as to leave the laptop on until I was able to download and burn the Breezy ISO the next morning (after some sleep). In saying that, I did end up having to reboot it, as for some reason it thought the CD-RW drive was busy, and, well, yeah. Believe it or not, the system did boot, apparantely without error; though there were a few complaints that it couldn't talk to locale (unsurprisingly). However, all is well now (until my hard drive and more RAM arrives), at which time it will be a tougher decision than originally anticipated to choose between SuSE 10 and Breezy. It hasn't taken long (or much) to like Ubuntu so far, though as a "full featured" distro, I will probably end up with SuSE. Or I could partition the drive and just have both, sharing a /home partition (with different user-folders) - Ubuntu for lightweight applications (eg when I'm on the tram and need to write down a URL, for example) and SuSE for my Development Stuff or something. -- Regards Mathew Carley HostENZ Data Services A Carley Network Media Ltd. D-Link DSL-302G modem queries

My apologies to all those who kindly replied to my post on the above subject for not acknowledging those replies sooner. I was required to be away from the computer for a few days. I then switched into Linux and found that the changes did what I'd hoped (at least for now!). My thanks to everyone.

Installing Skype on Ubuntu [Rant]
by Mathew Carley 13 Nov '05

13 Nov '05

Today I "rescued" my laptop (temporary measure as it needs the hard disk replaced) by installing Ubuntu Hoary over what was SuSE 9.3. 1. Yes, I know I could get breezy. It would take <5 minutes to download on my connection here (Yay for 40 megabits). 2. SuSE 10 will be going on the new hard drive, anyway. [That DVD ISO took around 2 hours] Here's why I'm a bit frustrated at the moment with Ubuntu: I wanted to install Skype. Skype is a KDE app, (and it looks ugly in Gnome - there are workarounds, but aside from that). It requires libqt3-xxxxxxxx. Firstly, I was trying to install it from the .deb package distributed on skype.com <http://skype.com> (skype_1.2.0.18-1_i386). Err, no - turns out I needed libqt3c102-mt_3.3.4-3_i386. So I download it. I read that I can use libqt3-mt_3.3.5-1_i386 instead, which is supposed to be a better way... I thought hrm... I should only need this package and maybe one other... but no. Next, it tells me that I need (insert several GCC-related libraries and supporting packages * 6) Why is none of this mentioned on any of the forums I ended up going to? Long story short: Here is what I ended up downloading and installing with dpkg (and for some parts I used Synaptic, but I couldn't make a local repository? What about apt-get? Would that have made life easier?): cpp-4.0_4.0-0pre6ubuntu7_i386 gcc-4.0_4.0-0pre6ubuntu7_i386 gcc-4.0-base_4.0.2-3_i386 initrd-tools_0.1.81.1_i386 [and Ubuntu versions of initrd-tools 0.1.77 and 0.1.78; however they wouldn't work with libc6] libc6_2.3.5-6_i386 libfontconfig1_2.3.2-1_i386 libgcc1_4.0.2-2_i386 libqt3c102-mt_3.3.4-3_i386 [which was replaced with libqt3-mt_3.3.5-1_i386] libqt3-mt_3.3.5-1_i386 libstdc++6_4.0.2-3_i386 libxrender1_0.9.0-2_i386 nscd_2.3.2.ds1-20ubuntu14_i386 and of course skype_1.2.0.18-1_i386 Not only did I have to get the required versions of these files from ftp.fi.debian.org/ <http://ftp.fi.debian.org/>, but the Ubuntu versions were "outdated" in terms of version numbering. According to most of what I read, I should have just needed to resolve 1 or 2 things (ended up downloading the repackaged skype .deb from a link posted on the Ubuntu Forums). Now, aside from all that, when I went to install libc6_2.3.5-6_i386, I found it conflicted with initrd-tools. Which is a vital part of the OS, if I am not mistaken. However at some stage over the several hours I was installing and figuring all this out, it installed. At some stage Synaptic decided that it would be a good idea (well, it asked, and there didn't appear to be any "argh! don't do that!" option) to remove most of the base system because I no longer had initrd-tools. So I downloaded initrd-tools 0.1.81, installed that, but now I want to install things like locale, but it won't because it needs a whole lot of other things. I think if I reboot this machine it... well... won't. Perhaps I will download and install Breezy and give the same task a go. As I mentioned originally, installing Ubuntu on this hard-drive was just a temporary measure so that I could at least browse the net. I like Ubuntu, but I felt that I really had to stuff around to get this app installed (and even then it doesn't seem to quite work correctly). Did I just have a bad experience (that perhaps I shouldn't have?) Maybe I have been somewhat spoiled by SuSE, and I don't use Debian-based Distros that often, so I'm not as used to them, but has anyone else experienced similar problems? This is the part where you all go: you didn't need to do all that, you should have .... :-) -- Regards Mathew Carley HostENZ Data Services A Carley Network Media Ltd. I think it's actually rated at 48Mbits, but I typically get around 4000 *kilobytes* per second in actual download speed (total). I posted a screenshot of my downloading of the Breezy ISO from Denmark (not using a download manager other than the one that comes with firefox). The file came in at a measly average of 2950 kilobytes per second. (I have also used Ibiblio.org <http://Ibiblio.org> and got similar speeds). D-Link DSL-302G modem queries
by Leslie Katz 12 Nov '05

12 Nov '05

I use the above modem, connected to my Ethernet port, with Fedora Core 3, kernel version 2.6.12-1.1378. I wanted to try out an application called Qnext, which is, among other things, a videoconferencing application. However, it insisted that the ports it required on my machine for incoming communications were not accesible by external contacts. Looking for the reason why that was, I found at the Australian D-Link site information about opening ports in the modem and realised that that was my problem. The D-Link information was for Windows only, so I looked on the Web to try to find information applicable to Linux. That led me to the WLUG Wiki page on the DSL-302G. That page contains the fullest information available on the topic, at least according to my Google searches I'm posting this because I'm hopeful that a subscriber to the list has followed the instructions on the Wiki page successfully to open a port. Unfortunately, I haven't even been able to take the first step, accessing the modem's internal web server. My Linux browser is Firefox. When I ask it to go to 10.1.1.1, I'm prompted for the user name and password and I give those and press Enter. Then, the browser says that it's waiting for 10.1.1.1 and never connects. My computer is dual-booting and my Windows browser is Firefox too. I tried to access 10.1.1.1 with it and had exactly the same result. I also have Internet Explorer and when I go through the same routine with it, I get the modem's internal web server instantaneously. Here are my questions: 1. Is there some thing I should be doing to access the server in Linux Firefox? 2. If I can't use Linux Firefox, is there some other browser anyone's used successfully? (I tried lynx, but it wouldn't work, I suppose because of the need for username and password. Maybe one can add those to the lynx command string, but that's way beyond my capabilities.) 3. Finally, I don't understand the effect of changing settings on the modem, but is it possible that changing them through Windows, which I think I could manage, would change them for Linux too? (I don't know how to express the idea technically correctly, but are those changes somehow internal to the modem and independent of the operating system used with the modem?) If anyone can give me information on any of the above questions, I'd be very grateful. Leslie PS: Ian McDonald, who kindly directed me to this list, said he thought that there'd been some discussion on this list recently about my modem. I searched for "302" by thread for each month for 2005, but found nothing. Perhaps the thread didn't make reference to that number. In any event, if you see this, Ian, I wouldn't want you to think I didn't bother trying the archives first.

FW: Linux Research - Request For Assistance
by Craig Box 03 Nov '05

03 Nov '05

Another message for the LUG from afar. Craig ________________________________ From: Andi Mann [mailto:amann(a)enterprisemanagement.com] Sent: Friday, 4 November 2005 9:55 a.m. To: secretary(a)wlug.org.nz Subject: Linux Research - Request For Assistance Hi, I am a Senior Analyst for Enterprise Management Associates (www.enterprisemanagement.com) a leading IT analyst firm, covering Systems Management technology. We are doing an in-depth research paper on Linux server management, and would like your help to survey the members of the Waikato Linux Users Group. We have posted a web survey, and I would like you to forward this email to your members, asking them to complete the survey. Each survey should take about 10 minutes. The URL for the survey is: http://www.emausa.com/surveys/ema_lsurvey.htm The proposition I am researching is that the total cost of ownership (TCO) for large-scale commercial Linux systems is declining due to availability of more powerful management tools; and that Linux TCO is equal to or less than that of Windows. It is in reaction, in part, to 2004 studies from Meta Group, Yankee, and Microsoft claiming Linux has higher management costs, and higher TCO, than Windows. My research aims to find out if the availability of better management tools has further reduced the cost of Linux ownership. In return, we would be happy to provide any respondents with the completed report. We think this will be a very significant paper, which will help you and your members present independent validation of Linux cost advantages. I would appreciate your help. Please let me know if you have any questions or comments. Thanks, Andi.

Fwd: [nznog] Update to Telecom Xtra DNS servers
by Ian McDonald 01 Nov '05

01 Nov '05

For people's info as this may affect you (or your friends) if DNS is not congifured correctly. ---------- Forwarded message ---------- From: Ted Grenfell <Ted.Grenfell(a)telecom.co.nz> Date: 02-Nov-2005 08:52 Subject: [nznog] Update to Telecom Xtra DNS servers To: NZNOG <nznog(a)list.waikato.ac.nz> As part of our ongoing DNS service improvements, Telecom is making some changes to it's DNS servers which will affect some non-Telecom customers. The following Xtra name servers will in future only accept queries from Non-Telecom customers for domains that the name servers are authoritative for. Recursive queries for other domains (e.g. www.google.com) will no longer work. * dnsh1.xtra.co.nz ( 202.27.184.3 ) also known as alien.xtra.co.nz * dnsh2.xtra.co.nz ( 202.27.184.5 ) also known as terminator.xtra.co.nz We will be phasing in these changes from November 15th over a period of several weeks and you may wish to alert your help desks to check the DNS settings of users having problems after that. Currently Xtra operates the following recursive DNS services: * dnsc1.xtra.co.nz ( 202.27.158.40 ) * dnsc2.xtra.co.nz ( 202.27.156.72 ) We are happy for external people to query those IP's for DNS troubleshooting and similar purposes but they should not be directly configured into machines. Please note these IP's may change from time to time and external access may be limited or withdrawn without prior warning (especially in cases of abuse). Could not determine the server's fully qualified domain name

Hello all, Just wondering if anyone might be able to give me some clues here. I started Apache on my system and the following error was returned. Apache seems to operate okay but I was getting a similar kind of error in the log files when I was running Privoxy, an advertisment and cookie crunching proxy server. When the proxy server was operating it was this error that kept slowing the response of the server. /etc/init.d/apache2 start returned 0 (success): Starting httpd2 (prefork) ..done httpd2-prefork: Could not determine the server's fully qualified domain name, using 127.0.0.1 for ServerName Any clues? Acceptable use of the WLUG Mailing List
by Meeting Reminder bot 31 Oct '05

31 Oct '05

PCI adsl modem.
by Camster342 25 Oct '05

25 Oct '05

Well i've had a lot of trouble with my adsl modem over the years... All probably being due to my very crappy DLink 302G adsl modem. It has slowly become the bane of my existence... So what I want to do is, one of two things: If possible I would like to get the 302G modem running in bridge mode, so that I can connect to it with pppoe. I have tried numerous times, but my linux box refuses to see the "Access Concentrator" when I try to set up pppoe. I've followed the instructions from DLinks site to use bridge mode, and I've tried using the updated firmware too. Both to no avail. Has anyone managed to get this modem working in full bridge mode, (not the half-bridge mode detailed on the wlug site)? The second option is to buy another modem. I want to try using a internal ADSL modem this time. Does anyone know which modems that are available in New Zealand work under Linux? -- Cameron

USB Headset
by Oliver Jones 23 Oct '05

23 Oct '05

Hi all. A week or more ago I posted about my interest in purchasing a Plantronics USB headset and whether it might work under Linux. Thank you to those who responded to that post. On Friday, after receiving my copy of World of Warcraft, I decided I needed to replace the dodgy analogue Plantronics headset I have with a USB one. It seems the only computer store near my place in Melbourne's CBD that stocked headsets was Harvey Norman and they only stocked Logitech devices. I bought a Logitech® Premium USB Headset 350 <http://www.logitech.com/index.cfm/products/details/AU/EN,CRID=103,CONTENTID…> and hoped for the best. As expected it works well on Windows for WoW. :) Tonight I decided to test it with Linux and I'm happy to report that getting it to work with Fedora Core 4 was a simple case of plugging it in. Hot plug and udev did their jobs and I could instantly twiddle with the mixer settings in Gnome Mixer and Audacity grabbed audio from /dev/dsp2 without a hitch. I'm well pleased. Regards

Fwd: [lca-announce] linux.conf.au 2006: Registrations are open!
by Ian McDonald 11 Oct '05

11 Oct '05

Folks, This is one of the three premier Linux conferences worldwide which is in NZ next year. Well worth attending if you can. I am presenting a paper at this conference also! Ian ---------- Forwarded message ---------- From: lca-announce-admin(a)lists.linux.org.au <lca-announce-admin(a)lists.linux.org.au> Date: 11-Oct-2005 11:59 Subject: [lca-announce] linux.conf.au 2006: Registrations are open! To: lca-announce(a)lists.linux.org.au 2006 - Dunedin, NZ! linux.conf.au is the annual Australian Linux technical conference, and is one of the largest gatherings of users and developers of Free and Open Source Software in the Southern Hemisphere. It is an opportunity for developers and groups to present their ideas amongst peers, and for the Free Software and Open Source communities to gather in general. Summary: Registrations are open! See http://lca2006.linux.org.au/register/ The 2006 conference is being held in Dunedin, New Zealand, at The University of Otago[1]. More information can be found on the conference website: http://lca2006.linux.org.au/ Registrations: The organisers of linux.conf.au 2006 are proud to finally announce that registrations are open. Keynote speakers at the conference are Mark Shuttleworth (instigator of the Ubuntu Linux distribution), Sudhakar "Thaths" Chandrasekharan (co-founder of Linux India), and Damian Conway (Perl 6 Developer and Guru). Some of the other speakers presenting at linux.conf.au 2006 are listed on http://linux.conf.au/speakers.php. This list will grow as more speakers confirm their acceptance to present at linux.conf.au, so check back from time to time. Like previous years the response to the call for papers was overwhelming, with over 150 paper and tutorial submissions received. Selection of the successful submissions was very difficult! Registration fees for linux.conf.au 2006 will be: AU$690 for professional delegates, AU$300 for hobbyist delegates, and a low AU$100 for students. An early bird discount of AU$172 for professional delegates and AU$75 for hobbyist delegates is available for those who register and pay before November 18th 2005 (This brings the prices down to AU$517.50 and AU$225 respectively). Registration for linux.conf.au includes admission to the two days of mini-conferences preceding linux.conf.au. We'll be announcing the miniconfs very soon, so stay tuned! Anyway, without further ado, it's time for you to direct your browser at: http://lca2006.linux.org.au/register/ ... And register so you can join us in January! See you there! Please feel free to forward this announcement to your local LUG, or any other person or group that would be interested! I have got the router working with WinXP as well as my Ubuntu box however it stopped working on my Linux Box and I suspect it may be a wiring problem is there any way to test the network so I can eliminate software as a cause.

Weird power
by Kyle Carter 07 Oct '05

07 Oct '05

Just an inquisitive question. My UPS seemed to go mental last night/this morning (around midnight Sat Oct 1st) flicking between battery and mains repeatedly for a few hours.. But no flickering lights or anything.. Im wondering if anyone else had something similar? Im assuming it may have been the power company doing something weird re: daylight savings? Kyle Carter

Using the Sony EyeToy under Linux
by Ian McDonald 06 Oct '05

06 Oct '05

Folks, While playing around with webcams under Linux I got this working and I've documented this at http://wlug.org.nz/EyeToy I've tested this out with GnomeMeeting and Camorama successfully. I'm sending this to the list as I know many of you may have these at home and it gives you a free webcam (you still need a microphone though). It wasn't well documented on the web either so I thought I might save a few of you the fun I went through :-) Ian

Re: [wlug] mythtv installation day?
by Justin Hyde 03 Oct '05

Thanks for the help Craig, very tempting to go home and try it now, but will have to wait until this evening. I knew that there was more than one way to skin the cat, but couldn't figure out how to integrate the help from the various pages/wikis. What are you experts partial to? Would ice cream persuade you to come along and help? I originally proposed next weekend for an installation day. I think this is too soon now, and I would like to get more experience before such a day. Can the experts please email me privately with a day/evening that is convenient, between now and end of November. I envisage a sat/sun with expert help for a few hours in the morning, and the experimenters can carry on through the day. Or the experimenters can start in the morning and experts turn up for lunch and solve all the problems in the afternoon. Location: my place in Ham East. Content: limited to free to air TV reception Bribery: Ice cream and other food and drink Date to be announced. Expressions of interest from experimenters would be helpful too please.

>Along those lines, have you ever tried Knoppmyth? It's goal in life is >"KnoppMyth is my attempt at making the Linux and MythTV installation as >trivial as possible. " >http://www.mysettopbox.tv/knoppmyth.html Well, I tried to get this running on the weekend, (for free to air channels in Hamilton) and with a bit of experience under my belt I think I can ask a couple of targeted questions... I followed the installation instructions found on http:// <http://zaf.geek.nz/projects/mythtv/> zaf.geek.nz/projects/mythtv/ but came across a couple of hang ups. 1. In step 2 of the instructions, it gives details of how to grab the listings from ontv or mrgeek and also how to create a symlink between the tv_grab_nz_mrgeek (or ontv) to the tv_grab_au file that will be selected in the next step. >From what I can understand this tells mythtv where to look for the current tv listings. Am I right in assuming that through this setup mythtv will grab the settings automatically each week, or does that still need to be set up? Is anyone else using the scripts from zaf's webpage? Do the scripts need modification? 2. In step 3, section 3 - "Video sources" of running mythtv-setup as the mythtv user I create a new video source, and called it FTA or similar, and selected the "Australia" option. This creates a file in /home/mythtv/.mythtv called FTA.xmltv If I cancel out of the mythtv-setup program then this file will contain no code. The instructions then say to run mythfilldatabase --manual as the mythtv user but this doesn't work, I get an error along the lines saying that --manual is not a valid option. Any ideas how to proceed from here? What does the FTA.xmltv code look like? Any one got this file for Hamilton? 3. I'm still keen to have a mythtv installation day, who on the committee can help me make this happen? Cheers Justin

USB Audio and Linux
by Oliver Jones 03 Oct '05

03 Oct '05

Hi Folks. For some unknown reason my plantronics headset makes nasty noises when I'm trying to record voice. Lots of background hum etc. On my laptop the hum is unusably bad. On my media box it isn't so bad. Anyway, I thought I might get a USB Plantronics headset to replace this one. I'm thinking it being a pure digital device the hummmmmm might be avoided. Anyway, I did a little Google for Linux and Plantronics DSP-500 and came up short. It appears to work but people seem to have problems integrating existing soundcards and the USB audio device. Most of these web pages mention old distross or kernels. Has anyone used a recent 2.6 kernel with ALSA and had joy getting two sound cards (or USB audio + sound card) to work well? Thanks. -- Oliver Jones > Roving Code Warrior > http://www.deeperdesign.com/

MTAs, oh the choices...
by Oliver Jones 03 Oct '05

03 Oct '05

Now that I've got a debian box I have a somewhat more eclectic selection of MTAs. Instead of being "stuck" with sendmail I can select either Postfix or Exim. Currently my box has postfix 2.1.5 installed. But I see that I can install one of the following: Exim 3.36 Exim 4.50 (stable) Exim 4.52 (testing) Postfix 2.2.4 (testing) I know Daniel is fairly familiar with Exim but I know nothing about these alternative MTAs. Can anyone provide sage advice on which has more features, is easier to configure, has powerful plugins, db support, IMAP server integration, virtual domains, spam filtering that sort of thing. Recommendations highly appreciated. Regards -- Oliver Jones > Roving Code Warrior > www.deeperdesign.com

Distro Question - Terminal Server
by Ivan Potgieter 03 Oct '05

03 Oct '05

Hello all, I am trying to get a 'proof of concept' machine going that will emulate a Terminal (serial port) Server. ie. Connecting via SSH and get access to a com port via a VT100 terminal session. I'm looking for a distro that meets specific requirements: (If anyone can recomend any hadware equivalent devices, that would be appreciated also.) My requirements are (in oder of preference): * SSH * minicom * Good NIC detection * Small resource requirements (pentium I, approx 32MB ram <1GB HDD) * pref LiveCD or simular that will install onto HDD * CLI only - X not required, in fact, I'd prefer no X at all. Most of the mini distros seems to be lacking minicom (usually rescue distros) or are geared towards running some form of mini-X (usually also lacking minicom). The closest distro that I have found that may do the trick, is FreeSCO. Anyone have any suggestions? Thanks, Ivan

Acceptable use of the WLUG Mailing List
by Meeting Reminder bot 30 Sep '05

30 Sep '05

'Fixit' meetings
by GunCom 28 Sep '05

28 Sep '05

One of the suggestions in Craig's survey was to have 'fixit' meetings. Informal discussion after the AGM showed there is some support for this from experienced members. To gauge the depth of interest, e-mail me off list and mention the sort of things you would like to have 'fixed'. If there is enough interest I'll put it to the committee. Exim Install on Ubuntu
by Ivan Potgieter 28 Sep '05

28 Sep '05

Thanks for all the suggestions, I've tried apt-get install resulting in: ivan(a)silver:~$ sudo apt-get install Reading package lists... Done Building dependency tree... Done 0 upgraded, 0 newly installed, 0 to remove and 0 not upgraded. My understanging of the above is that my system is clean. (FYI: I'm running Ubuntu 5.04) I have installed exim4, exim4-config, exim4-doc and found that anacron, at, lsb, mailx & mutt were still installed, but postfix, postfix-lts, ubuntu-base had been removed (as expected). So all seems fine. Thanks for all the feedback - it looks like it was just a storm in a teacup. Ivan.
