Upcoming elections and you...
by Greig McGill 05 Sep '06

05 Sep '06

Hi All, It's been quite a while since I posted to this list. I've been lurking. I'd just like to ask you all to do me a big favour... For the last four years, the same very dedicated group of people have served as the WLUG committee, give or take a couple of transient members. I'd like to say they've done a great job, especially as this is the first year I've not been involved! ;) The problem is that it's left to them. I know from past experience that there is a lot of complaining behind the scenes, in private emails, and on irc about WLUG being run by an exclusive group who all know each other, and make decisions without enough consultation. That would be fair criticism if anyone else ever stood for the committee besides this dedicated bunch. Please consider standing for the WLUG committee. It doesn't require too much effort. You just need to be prepared to turn up to meetings regularly, do any tasks that are required of you quickly (and there aren't that many), and be good at reporting back to your fellow committee members. If you have good communication skills, and are a reasonably motivated person, *please* put your name forward. I'd like to think I'm not being hypocritical by not standing myself, I did it for four years, the last as president. I don't think it's unfair of me to hope that others will put their name forward. I've stepped right back this year, hardly even attending meetings, as I've had other priorities. I'd also like to think that the current hard working committee could do the same and not feel like if they do, nobody will step up to fill their shoes. Why does the WLUG even need a committee? After all, other LUGs don't have one. Well, I think that WLUG has achieved more than all the other LUGs in NZ put together. We have a world class knowledge base in our wiki, we have a great library, we have excellent knowledgeable membership, we hold regular informative meetings with interesting speakers, and we're just generally damn cool. Not to mentions things like installfests, software freedom days, and other such public advocacy events. WLUG rocks (I reckon). Would all this have happened without that same dedicated bunch pushing it along? I don't think so. Thank you Lindsay, David, Craig, Ian, Perry, Matthias, and all the other regular helpers, Matt, John, Daniel, and others. Right, I've gone on enough. Please consider standing for the 2006/2007 committee. It's not too much work, and it makes a huge difference. Cheers, Greig McGill

Sorry Bruce This was meant for everyone... ----- Message Forwarded on Tue 5/9/2006 ----- From: "" <jaytee(a)clear.net.nz> To: zcat <zcat(a)wired.net.nz> Subject: Re: [wlug] DVD woes!! + wifi Date: Mon, 04 Sep 2006 09:40:19 +1200 Hi All, Just to update you all on my progress. I got my wifi to work in Ubuntu by using an ndiswrapper using this link: http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=197102 One thing that did confuse me was the fact that the command prompt did not return after running a set up script, all that happened was the cursor seemed to (is this usual) just hang, making me think that it had been a failure . When I got to a access point I was happy to find it working. The dvd player which I thought I had got sorted. still does not work. I was using an unencrypted dvd (the reason it worked) when i tried a "normal" dvd the fault still exists. Regards John..

03 Sep '06

In accordance with Rule 6 of the charter, I would like to announce to all members that the Waikato Linux Users Group (Incorporated) will be holding its Annual General Meeting on Monday, 2 October, 2006, at 7pm, at the regular meeting location of room LitB at the University of Waikato. If you wish to nominate someone, please contact them and ask if they are willing to stand; if you would rather not contact them yourself, feel free to email me and I will pass your request on for you. Acceptable use of the WLUG Mailing List
by Meeting Reminder bot 31 Aug '06

31 Aug '06

The WLUG Mailing List is the discussion-list extension of the Waikato Linux Users Group (Incorporated). As such, we expect members of this list to adhere to the principles espoused in the official WLUG Charter[1], in particular, Rule 6, which covers the activities on this mailing list. While this is an Acceptable Use Policy, the WLUG Committee do recognise the need for informal discussion among list members, and draconian administration is not the goal here. Please keep in mind, however, that your comments to this list do represent the WLUG, and while it is good to be seen as an organisation with a sense of humour, some comments may do major harm to our credibility as a serious advocate of GNU/Linux and all things Free Software/ Open Source related. List discussion should * be honest * accentuate the positive, without hyperbole or blatant misrepresentation * maintain a reasonable level of spelling and grammar * not indulge in ad hominem attacks * not continue inflammatory or abusive threads * not be unprofessional or petty, especially with respect to the names of other software companies * not promote or denigrate political, cultural, or religious views * not indulge in marketing or advertising, other than on a private sale basis, or advertising of jobs - which may be announced once only * not reproduce copyrighted material without permission from the copyright holder * not defame any person or organisation Posters who consistently violate these guidelines will be dealt with at the discretion of the List Maintainer. If you feel you have been unfairly dealt with, you have recourse to any member of the WLUG Committee[2]. Certain mailing list etiquette should also be maintained: * please use only plain text (not HTML) * reply inline or below when quoting, rather than on top * trim quotes (don't reply quoting a 10 page message with a single line of reply) If you have any questions, start reading at http://www.gweep.ca/~edmonds/usenet/ml-etiquette.html. These points have been established over a long time on this list. If you want to question them, please do it off list. As list users, use your discretion when pulling people up over etiquette - please reply off list, and if there is a serious breach, the list administrator will probably have dealt with it off-list already. Committee meeting update
by Craig Box 27 Aug '06

27 Aug '06

Hi everyone, Meeting minutes --------------- Minutes of our last committee meeting are available online at http://www.wlug.org.nz/CommitteeMeetingTopics.2006-08-24. AGM --- The 2005 Annual General Meeting for Waikato Linux Users' Group (Inc) will be held on Monday 2 October, in the regular location. This is one week after our September meeting. The topic of the September meeting will be related to new users (and advertised in a handout at SFD), and include __free pizza__! Software Freedom Day -------------------- We are on track for hosting our Software Freedom Day advocacy event. If you are keen to help out (I haven't yet seen anything from the people who added their name to the wiki page!) please read the forum at http://forums.wlug.org.nz/viewforum.php?f=11, and see if there's anything you can help out with. We will be having a meeting about a week before the day for potential helpers to come along to. We're probably on track for demo people on the day but will still need people to help with set-up and tear-down, as well as random tasks during the day. WLUG server ----------- Thank you for your patience with the WLUG server over the weekend. Perry, Matt and I took the server up to Orcon on Saturday and spent the afternoon installing it. The database was quite corrupt (we were lucky to get the last backup off it) and Perry and Matt spent most of Sunday getting everything under control. On behalf of the committee Shell and mail access should be back online. Secure features such as webmail and the password changer will be down for a while still, while we figure out what we're doing with SSL certificates. See you all tonight for a crash course in the Squid caching web proxy! Craig

Printing with CUPS and Kyocera FS-9500DN
by Chris O'Halloran 24 Aug '06

24 Aug '06

http://homepages.slingshot.co.nz/~cmoman/Scan3845.pdf The above pdf is scan of the output I get having configured CUPS on my linux box to print to a Kyocera printer. It appears to me that the printer is not interpreting the PostScript test file as Postscript and is instead interpreting and printing the text within the file. The printer is connected to a local lan and most people print to it via Windows XP computers via a Windows server. I am using KDE with CUPS and have successfully printed to a brother colour laser using IPP and the PPD file from the Brother website. I am using the PPD file from the Kyocera file and linuxprinting.org says the Kyocera is supported perfectly. The Kyocera doesn't appear to use IPP but can be seen as a network printer or via SAMBA but I am not sure if this makes a difference. >From what I have described is a solution obvious? Thanks

Running from a USB drive
by Glenn Ramsey 21 Aug '06

21 Aug '06

Hi, I have sucessfully installed XUbuntu Dapper onto an external USB disk drive. I would like to be able to run it using this drive but the PC I have does not have the option of booting from USB. I understand that one solution to this is to create (or obtain) a custom boot floppy or CD, but I am wondering if it is possible to do it just with the live/install CD by passing the right parameters at the boot prompt. I tried pressing F6 and changing the root=/dev/ram to root=/dev/sda1 and removing all the other stuff but that didn't work. It boots but still runs from the CD. If that approach is not possible then is there a small (we're still in the DSL dark here) prebuilt iso that can be used to do this? I notice that there is a mini.iso in the distribution which I understand has something to do with network booting. Since that isn't too far removed from what I wan't to do then would it possible to use that? I have done some web searching for this but could only find the instructions for making a custom boot floppy or CD. Getting files from a debian/ubuntu mirror
by Glenn Ramsey 18 Aug '06

18 Aug '06

I have LAN access to an Ubuntu mirror at Akl uni and I'd like to copy all the Dapper packages (incl multiverse and universe) onto my laptop so I can install it on other PCs at home. For Breezy I just copied the whole thing (11.4Gb), since the mirror was new and that's all that was there but I expect that it will have more than doubled in size now and I won't have HD space for it. Is there a way to copy only the package files for a specified version? Glenn -- Glenn Ramsey <glenn(a)componic.co.nz> 07 8627077 http://www.componic.co.nz

Python problem?
by Leslie Katz 17 Aug '06

17 Aug '06

I downloaded the latest version of youtube-dl (2006.08.15) from www.arrakis.es/~rggi3/youtube-dl/. It's a CLI program to download videos from YouTube. The instructions say you need the Python interpreter, v 2.4. A check of my RPM packages showed that I only had python-2.3.4-13.1.i386.rpm installed, so I also installed python24-2.4.1-2.i386.rpm, which I assume means that I now satisfy the requirement for v 2.4 of the Python interpreter. However, when I run youtube-dl, I get the following error message: Traceback (most recent call last): File "/usr/bin/youtube-dl", line 150, in ? urllib2.install_opener(urllib2.build_opener(urllib2.HTTPCookieProcessor())) AttributeError: 'module' object has no attribute 'HTTPCookieProcessor' I checked the contents of the file youtube-dl and line 150 of it is identical to the third of the four lines I just set out. I know nothing about Python. I did google to see if I could find some solution to the problem, but couldn't. Is there anything that strikes people immediately as something I could try to get youtube-dl working?

device order
by zcat 15 Aug '06

15 Aug '06

I ran into a very frustrating problem yesterday, hopefully someone in wlug knows the answer.. Verne has 4 sound devices; onboard sound, two PCI cards, and a USB transmitter. When I first set up breezy I had them loading as /dev/dsp onboard /dev/dsp1 first PCI /dev/dsp2 second PCI When he first got the USB transmitter it kept coming up as /dev/dsp1 and I managed to fix that by listing snd-intel8x0 and snd-ens1371 in /etc/modules, forcing the module for the onboard sound and two PCI cards to load earlier. Yesterday I upgraded to dapper and now all the sound devices come up in completely unpredictable order, not even the same on two consecutive boots. Even though the correct modules are still listed in /etc/modules. Is there a proper way to force devices to get detected in the order I want?

SFD planning now on forums
by Craig Box 08 Aug '06

08 Aug '06

Hi all, As not everyone who wants to help is on the committee, and not everyone who is on the mailing list is in a position to help, and we have new forums that we're trying to encourage people to use, I thought I'd put some more information about what needs to be done up on a forum. Please check out http://forums.wlug.org.nz/viewforum.php?f=11 - each task is in its own topic, so if you're interested or have an opinion, please feel free to post. I will keep updating the first message in each thread as appropriate, but the more conversation, help and support, the better! The success of the LUG hinges on the participation of members. This is an event where we have the opportunity to set out well defined goals and then measure our success. It also has the potential of bringing lots of new blood into the society. Please get behind it. Regards Craig

Here we go this is strange but true, * Eats words and watches dvd's* I went down and ran "apt-get update then installed mplayer. Hi everyone. Hopefully someone can help. Installing knoppmyth, and having no end of trouble with the soundcard. Its an onboard VIA VT8235 chipset. On a PCChips M925 motherboard. Alsa auto confs the cards being an ens1731, which doesnt work. Altering the alsa-base file to set it to snd-via82xx with options up the wazoo. Everything seems to be set right Modprobing insmods correctly, and theres no errors, all dependensies load correctly. all procs are running. Try and run either aumix or alsamix and nothing works. Alsa-autoconifg wont detect a device as being there. /proc/asound contains a file called cards which says no soundcards, the only device that seems to detect is the timer. If you need anymore info let me know, im new to this linux thing.

My problem still exists I Have spent quite a bit of time googling and reading forums and have come across a few examplse of the same problem. No real answers have emerged except to install libdvdcss2 and libreaddvd both of which I have done many times now. The device works and will read most media including mpegs but stalls on dvd for some reason. I wonder if there is a totem setting that I should have done or some simple script that I have failed to issue Any ideas would be most welcome. John, I know little of these things at the best of times and it's been a while since I tried Wine (it didn't work with the Windows program I wanted to run). All that said, I seem to remember that there was a Linux program called winecfg that came with Wine. The command you mentioned is one to the Linux program Wine to run the Windows program config.exe and, since you have no such Windows program, you're getting the error message. Can this be right? I suppose it won't hurt to try, if you haven't already solved the problem. Leslie

SFD event planning
by Craig Box 02 Aug '06

02 Aug '06

Hi everyone, As you will have heard, WLUG are going to hold a public demonstration on Software Freedom Day, which is Sep 16 this year. I have created a wiki page for planning the event: http://www.wlug.org.nz/MeetingTopics.2006-09-16/Planning. If you're interested in helping out, whether on the day or before hand, please check the page out - you can sign your name on http://www.wlug.org.nz/MeetingTopics.2006-09-16 also. I think it is important we decide on what we want to achieve, as well as deciding how we will do it and apportioning tasks. I've put a draft of our goal and what we want to get out of it, which are, along with everything else, open for editing. I don't want to bore this list with all the back and forth about planning, so we will try and do most of it on the wiki or perhaps on the new forums, to give them a little bit of a kick. If anyone has any suggestions, please sign them on that page. Craig

Isnt the 'serial no.' you mention the same as the > USB ID discussed above? > Ok, so it doesn't work for all USB devices. Mice are probably the same. Anything with a filesystem or a unique serial, or MAC address, etc, however is fine. So, ok, multiple identical printers are probably a problem. At this point you might have to resort to "get different printers", or "leave them plugged into the same USB port, perhaps on an external HUB", or "buy an external print server that does ethernet -> USB. In terms of sound cards[1], you could use the PCI ID to define the order in which sound cards are brought up. This doesn't change - or it shouldn't change, unless you have faulty/crazy hardware - unless you shift the physical slot the device is plugged into. [1] or anything, even including USB devices as long as you are prepared to put them on the same port every time. Use the USB *bus* ID in that case, not the PCI ID, obviously :)

Acceptable use of the WLUG Mailing List
by Meeting Reminder bot 31 Jul '06

31 Jul '06

Live migration on Xen/ATA over Ethernet
by Ian McDonald 25 Jul '06

25 Jul '06

Folks, Here is an article on this: http://www.linux.com/article.pl?sid=06/07/17/1916214 It also talks a bit about ATA over Ethernet (AoE) which is a "cheap" way of doing SANs - cheap being a relative term. I myself would rather use iSCSI as it runs over IP (and therefore doesn't have to be on same segment). But AoE is still interesting as well. BIOS failure?
by Chris O'Halloran 22 Jul '06

22 Jul '06

Hello, On wednesday night, I was happily using my computer and playing around with some wengophone software. At the end of the evening I shut my machine down. On Thurday lunch time, I went home for lunch and thought I'd fire up my machine to play with the wengophone software somemore. The Nvidia BIOS flashed on the screen and then nothing further came up on screen. I waited a while and still nothing more. I held in the Power button until the machine switched off and restarted it again. Same result except I noticed the harddrive light was fluttering away. So I switched it off and tried booting a knoppix CD. No result. So I disconnected the power supply to the second harddrive thinking maybe there was some argument between the harddrive and tried starting again. The first harddrive contains the master boot record. This time, still get the Nvidia BIOS notice but still doesn't boot but this time no harddrive light persistently fluttering. So, I am running out of options. Bascially, the computer doesn't seem to get to the BIOS screen but I am not sure what I can do about that. I had moved the computer or changed any of the power requirements. Is the motherboard stuffed? Is the BIOS stuffed? Any thoughts or recommendations etc. Chris

Meeting minutes & discussion topics
by Craig Box 20 Jul '06

20 Jul '06

The minutes of our committee meeting are now up at http://www.wlug.org.nz/CommitteeMeetingTopics.2006-07-20 (when the meetings are at my house, I can take them live to the internet a lot easier!) We regret to announce the resignation of Gian Perrone from the WLUG committee, effective immediately. A replacement member will not be sought as we are due to have an AGM in a couple of months. A couple of questions for our community.. - Are you interested in helping out on our advocacy display on September 16? We expect to have a stand with PCs, demos and giveaways running at Centreplace. If you are available, or want to help organise the event, please add your name to http://www.wlug.org.nz/MeetingTopics.2006-09-16. - If WLUG held Linux training, would you be interested in attending? What would you want to learn? Would you, or your employer, pay, especially if there was the possibility of gaining a certification at the end of it? We also think that Hamilton needs a Thursday Night Curry, and if you bug us enough, we might just book a Thursday for it! Craig

Audio sub-systems on Linux
by Ian McDonald 20 Jul '06

20 Jul '06

I notice that Craig discusses these a bit on his latest blog at: http://craig.dubculture.co.nz/blog/2006/07/20/audio-on-ubuntu/ Craig - can you (or anyone else?) explain to me how Jack fits into all of this? Jack is mentioned at: http://jackit.sourceforge.net/docs/faq.php http://jackaudio.org/ I've seen quite a bit of mention of Jack around the place (as well as GStreamer) and haven't noticed PulseAudio much at all. It seems clear that OSS is going away and what Craig says about ESD makes sense as well... Now Alsa is at the kernel level for devices and doesn't seem to face any real competition. How do the other bits fit togther though? router disconnecting
by Haldor Riddering 19 Jul '06

19 Jul '06

Hi people, okay I had a big crash and lost loads of data in windows plus system got trashed so decided to give ubuntu dapper a go on my laptop. no worries after much hacking away got everything working how I want it. now however there is a problem. I have a dlink dsl-302g modem. now whenever I run the laptop after a few minutes the router disconnects then reconnects and this happens again and again whenever the laptop is on. it doesn't happen with my windows machines and if I turn the laptop off the connection is constant for 24+ hours. I emailed the slingshot help desk and they say it's a line fault and it's going to cost $88 to have it looked at. but it only happens when the laptop is on the network. any ideas about whats happening here? I'm very happy with ubuntu, just frustrated with the disconnects. I have tried a second dsl-302g so it's not the router and the internal network works flawlessly just the internet connection is screwy. Cheers Haldor

Local Linux training
by Eric Light 19 Jul '06

19 Jul '06

Hi all, My name is Eric, I've been following this list for about two years now but haven't had occasion to actually make a post until now... I've been looking for a training institute which offers a course towards the CompTIA Linux+ certificate. I was offered a scholarship in Auckland for such a course, but I'm really looking for somewhere in Hamilton. My experience with Linux is minimal - I've installed a few older versions of Mandrake in the past, and more recently got most of a server going with Ubuntu. But I still honestly don't really know what I'm doing, and most of the time I rely on programs which feature a GUI. I'd like to get away from that. I've called Hamilton Business School (http://www.hbsc.co.nz/index.asp?PageID=2145824273) who seem to be the only ones in Hamilton offering the course, but their Linux tutor has recently left the company and so they're not offering the course at the moment. Does anyone know of a Hamilton training provider where I could do something along the lines of a 20-week course via Student Loan? Thanks in advance, - Eric Light

Squid content admin tool

The Waikato Linux Users Group have a meeting in one week from today: ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Our July guest is Roger de Salis, a director of http://www.wlug.org.nz/FxNetworks. FX Networks are a http://www.wlug.org.nz/Wellington company with significant http://www.wlug.org.nz/Unix and http://www.wlug.org.nz/Cisco Networking experience. The principals of FX have over 50 years experience in the IT and Telecommunications industry, the bulk of which is about continuously available on-line systems for public use. They specialise in bringing interesting technical ideas to market. FX believe you should be able to get connectivity far greater than what is currently available in New Zealand, and have made great investment in a fibre network around New Zealand. They're also pioneers in the use of http://www.wlug.org.nz/VoIP. If you're interested in the InterNet or telephone calls, this is a meeting not to be missed!

David wrote Hi After playing with my networking settings in Breezy, I seem to have lost some data from my /etc/hosts file. Partly it requires editing to add to add "ubuntuDavid" to it. Thinking about it My command was probably trying to execute the file rather than open it and root did not have permission to execute it. I will look at the book I have at work to look into that next week. Then I can change the permission back again! Skype working better for Linux
by Ian McDonald 12 Jul '06

12 Jul '06

Folks, I'm meant to be making a Skype call at 5 am tomorrow (yeah!!) to talk about Linux but I have had bad experiences with Skype previously with sound working (or more to the point not!) and preferred not to use Windows in case I need to look something up that I'm talking about. Anyway I've now found that Skype for Linux has a new beta out which now uses ALSA by default as the sound system instead of OSS. What this means is that sound seems to "just work" now for me. If you have had problems with Skype have a look at: http://www.skype.com/download/skype/linux/13beta.html or: http://www.skype.com/download/skype/linux/changelog.html Still no webcam support yet but this is a big step forward for me at least. Re Intel Modem on Dapper
by David Bowen 11 Jul '06

11 Jul '06

Hi Matt wrote At this point the hamregistry and the driver itself have been installed successfully (as per the previous two messages), what you don't have is the boot scripts. It's a fairly simply matter to install these manually: run the following commands as root: # install -o root -g root -m 755 Intel536_boot /etc/init.d/Intel536 # ln -s ../init.d/Intel536 /etc/rcS.d/S16Intel536 Shouldn't I be able to find 536ep0 in /dev if the drivers are installed? Nothing there! Bnonn. I ran your script but it just looked for repositories, Not found of course as we have no Internet connection. Have not been able to network Breezy with Dapper or SUSE 10.1 yet. Can ping them both ways but cant get Internet connection through them to patch Yast yet. Regards David

-----Original Message----- Lotus Notes is now running on Linux: http://arstechnica.com/news.ars/post/20060710-7222.html -- Ian McDonald Hi, This is a little bit of a thread hi-jack but it is about corporate use of Linux so here goes..... I am an application packager by trade (MS environment) and the latest version of Wise Package Studio (http://www.wise.com/Products/Packaging/Overview.aspx) supports creation and editing of RPM files. The beauty of this tool is how simple it is to create and deploy consistent applications to large enterprises (we package the application to work consistently on 2k/xp/vista/citrix). I know it is doing nothing that couldn't already be done via a command line packaging tool but a lot of companies have already invested massive amounts of money in Wise infrastructure with delegated rights, deployment systems and reporting and would love to be able to apply those processes to their Linux systems. So now with Wise and Notes I can build 2 (MS/RPM) packages following the same configuration and testing steps and have every user running the same application and configuration while my manager can manager the teams workflows and productivity via the reporting functions. I know most of you will not see it this way, but this is a massive leap forward for Linux in the Standard Operating Environments that I help design and deploy. Lotus Notes is now running on Linux: http://arstechnica.com/news.ars/post/20060710-7222.html IBM have a stated goal to run much of their business on Linux and since they own Lotus they will have converted this as they probably use heavily. This will potentially help Linux uptake in places like accounting firms and governments which use Notes quite heavily. -- Ian McDonald Web: http://wand.net.nz/~iam4 Blog: http://imcdnzl.blogspot.com WAND Network Research Group Department of Computer Science University of Waikato New Zealand

Re: [wlug] Intel Modem
by David Bowen 08 Jul '06

08 Jul '06

From: "Ian McDonald" What source code package are you using? i.e. where are you getting those files you put in that directory Intel-536. These are the drivers from Intel's download site. The same ones I used on Breezy. That version number sounds like an Ubuntu kernel. Have you tried with a kernel from http://kernel.org and then using that? It is the default Ubuntu Dapper kernel. I gather compiling custom kernels is not for nube's like me. Maybe next install fest I will get a chance to come down and learn a few things, lots of questions to ask, From: Craig Box Tried following https://help.ubuntu.com/community/DialupModemHowto ? Yes. It works fine for Breezy, nothing there for Dapper yet, can't get the driver to compile (Make). Well I plan on going ADSL in the not to distant future. But it would be nice to work through this problem, for learning purposes. Thanks David Bowen

Replacing FreeS/WAN with a 2.6-kernel-friendly VPN server
by Craig Box 05 Jul '06

05 Jul '06

I currently have a Debian Woody machine acting as a head-end IPSEC server to three sites with Cisco 837 ADSL routers. Woody is no longer maintained and I would like to upgrade the machine, and get it onto a 2.6 kernel. The IPSEC driver used by FreeS/WAN on 2.4 is klips. FreeS/WAN is no longer maintained, and has forked into OpenSwan and StrongSwan. The 2.6 kernel has its own implementation of IPSEC, called NETKEY, and klips requires a patched kernel, which I would rather not have to maintain, as there is a good IPSEC implementation in the mainline. The standard 2.6 kernel IPSEC model, using the ipsec-tools, lets you do all sorts of things with policies. In the past, I've had an ipsec0 interface, which has been given IP addresses and been able to connect routes to, and hang firewall rules off. I believe NETKEY doesn't give that. The remote sites can be considered 'trusted' insomuch as machines on their LAN are currently routed such they may as well be on the local LAN, and so it wouldn't matter too much that I couldn't apply specific firewall rules. Can anyone advise me on the easiest way to do this? Should I continue using OpenSwan? Is there a good HOWTO for this, or will I be the guy that writes it? (Assume I know everything on http://www.wlug.org.nz/26sec :) Any suggestions? Michal, are you still around, and is this right in your area of expertise? :) Craig

Acceptable use of the WLUG Mailing List
by Meeting Reminder bot 30 Jun '06

30 Jun '06

Software Freedom Day - Public advocacy event
by Craig Box 24 Jun '06

24 Jun '06

Hi everyone, We've had two successful installfests in the last two years, but this year, especially with the emergence of the Saturday Workshop, it seems have already got Linux installed for all the people we know that know about it. So now it's time to drum up some new interest! One of the things we have wanted to do for a while is a public advocacy event, to be held before the next installfest, so we can tell members of the public that Linux exists, it's not just a "different DOS", and that Free/Open Source Software is available for proprietary operating systems too. Software Freedom Day is an international celebration of FOSS. Now in its third year, SFD 2006 is on September 16th, and it seemed only natural to have our advocacy event on this day. What we envision is a public booth in a high foot traffic area (currently we're hoping to be able to get some space in Centreplace or Downtown Plaza). We can have three or four computers set up to show off some of the latest Linux eye candy, as well as FOSS software on Windows, and some free culture media (such as the recent Pearl Jam video clip that was made available under a Creative Commons license). We will be seeking sponsorship from businesses for giveaways and signage, so if you are interested in supporting the LUG, please get in touch with me. SFD itself is sponsored, so we should be able to receive CDs and t-shirts from them, but we will also need flyers, posters, and other giveaways. There are some advocacy guidelines on the SFD website [1] that are worth reading; the basic gist is that FOSS is not the right answer for every situation, and the positives can be accentuated without 'boring people with ideology' or pretending that FOSS is the only answer. This means that you need to run ./configure to generate the Makefile before you run make. The INSTALL file in the source distribution should have some other instructions about how the build system works. > By the way, smb4k is not in the Kubuntu repositories. Interested in reading the stories of people involved in the tech industry in NZ? You might not have heard of Planet NZTech, which can be found at http://stuff.rancidbacon.com/nztech/ A Planet is a weblog aggregator that brings together the writings of a group of people. While the topic ensures they have at least one common connection, posts can be on widely varied topics. There are a lot of Wellington Ruby on Rails and .NET programmer types, and a number of blogs from Planet WLUG (http://planet.wlug.org.nz/) have just been added, so there's a wide spectrum of participants, software and hardware, proprietary and Open Source, commercial and community. Samba
by Joshua Mark Goodwin 17 Jun '06

17 Jun '06

Hello all, I am using a Kubuntu computer (dual-boot) on a Windows LAN. I am able to the following: -Use Samba to access Windows shares using my domain name and password (I'm a Domain Admin). -Open Microsoft documents in Open Office (If I open Open Office first and then navigate my way to the share using the "Open" dialog box. -Have the machine show up in the Windows "Microsoft Windows Network" location in My Network Places. It shows up in its own workgroup, even though I listed the name of the domain in the "domain" line in the network preferences setup (KDE System Settings). This is what I would like to able to do; 1- When I click on the Microsoft document directly from the Konqueror window, Open Office displays it start up screen, but never opens. When I open the document from inside Open Office, it opens it, but says "Samba not fully supported. Only a local copy of the file will be created." And then it gives it some jibberish name - like kdefilepickerPX0BQa.doc" How do I get it to directly open the Microsoft document from the Konqueror window? How do I fix the Samba error? 2 - I would like to be able to RDP/VNC into the Linux box from Windows. I have a VNC viewer and a putty client. Both of these, as well as Windows "Remote Desktop Connection", all give me the "Connection refused" error. How do I fix this? 3 - I would like to share some folders on the Linux box to be accessible from Windows. I can see the Linux computer in the computer list, but when I click on it, it comes up with a login box. When I type my Linux user name and password (which is the same as my Windows variants), it does not accept the authentication. This never happened when I was running Ubuntu 5.04. The file system was just shared - I didn't set anything up or install any packages. Any help appreciated! Hohua

How to create free VMWare Player images
by Ian McDonald 16 Jun '06

Really interesting article here: http://software.newsforge.com/article.pl?sid=06/05/16/1940214&from=rss This talks about creating images using the free (as in beer) VMWare Player by basically hacking configuration files. I suspect VMWare may close down this loophole so use it while it lasts... MySQL database
by Chris O'Halloran 11 Jun '06

11 Jun '06

Hello, I tried upgrading Kubuntu Breezy to Dapper using the "alternative CD" It didn't work particulary well and so I looked at kubuntu.org for information on what to do. The upshot is, in the words of the website, that I have "hosed" my Kubuntu install. Naturally enough I didn't do a backup before had because everything that I had done with Kubuntu in the past had worked fine. I have Suse10 installed on other partitions and I can happily see my kubuntu partitions so the file systems aren't corrupt, its just that Kubuntu won't boot anymore. I'll happily resign myself to a fresh install of Kubuntu Dapper except the only data I don't know how to retrieve is information stored in my phpwiki that relies on MySQL for the content storage. I'd forgotten I had it on my machine but now that I have remembered it I'd really like it back. Is my data recoverable from MySQL? I don't mind if I have to cut and paste everything back into the wiki. It doesn' contain heaps of data but it does contain some techobabble gems and I would like to recover them if possible. Is it doomed?

Soundcards
by Chris O'Halloran 10 Jun '06

10 Jun '06

Hello, I was wondering if people might care to comment on their experiences with soundcards and linux support. I have a Pentium III Coppermine on a motherboard with an onboard sound card. lspci> Multimedia audio controller: VIA Technologies, Inc. VT82C686 AC97 Audio Controller (rev 21) To date the sound card has worked fine playing ogg files and mp3's. However, where it seems to struggle is with programs like Skype and Openwengo, two VOIP applications. I believe it has something to do with operating in full duplex ie it can't record and play at the same time (I don't have Windows to test this theory) and/or the state of Alsa support for the card is such hardware mixing (which I don't think the card supports) is the only viable option for using these programs I was wondering if people might be able to recommend a PCI sound card that is well supported by/for Linux.

Ubuntu documentation
by Craig Box 06 Jun '06

06 Jun '06

There are many reasons that WLUG recommend Ubuntu as a distribution for new and experiences Linux users alike. The one I'd like to point out today is the excellent documentation that is available. http://help.ubuntu.com/ has PDF and HTML versions of guidebooks for the new 6.06 release, covering all variants (GNOME, KDE, XFCE), as well as Ubuntu Server and packaging. The documentation is available under the GNU Free Documentation License, so you can download it and print it yourself, as well as distribute it freely. A company called Lulu are making printed versions available by money-and-postage (http://www.lulu.com/ubuntu-doc) but I imagine shipping to New Zealand would be prohibitive. If enough people are interested, WLUG could investigate having some copies printed and bound, and made available to members at cost. Craig

Open Office
by Joshua M. Goodwin 06 Jun '06

06 Jun '06

To the WLUG, Howdy! Here's my first question. (BTW I am a novice Linux/ubuntu user -- dual boot and work with Windows networks) I am a Domain Admin trying to access Windows shares ( I have full access). That works fine. I've been using OpenOffice to open Microsoft documents, edit them, and save changes. This has worked fine for 2 weeks. Now, when I try to open these documents, the OpenOffice program starts launching, but never opens the document (or OpenOffice itself). This just started happening today, so it seems like a freak occurence. Some help would be great. Hohua (aka Josh) tech(a)iblp.org.nz

Openfiler
by Chris O'Halloran 01 Jun '06

01 Jun '06

Some discussions have come about adding another server to reduce the pressure on our existing server. I don't generally make any of the decisions regarding our computer network but a suggestion was made regarding a program/server/technology called openfiler. Given that I am the known open source advocate around here, the question was asked, what did I know about it and did anyone in the wlug have any experience of using it. I assumed it was a software package but its seems is a customized version of a Ret Hat derivate CentOS. http://www.openfiler.org Having a Linux server on the network would definitely be a foot in the door for Linux based software within our company but it would good if the first experience within the company was positive and straightforward. Any comments or does openfiler provide a nice gui install for setting up a network server that could also be acheived using other modern distro? Cheers Chris

Acceptable use of the WLUG Mailing List
by Meeting Reminder bot 31 May '06

31 May '06

I was reading the cnet article on the need for a mail client to push forward DESKTOP LINUX *E-mail will be the most significant factor governing the uptake of Linux on the desktop, according to a new study. * The Desktop Linux Client Survey 2005, released this week by the Open Source Development Labs, found that the lack of a powerful e-mail application could hinder the adoption of Linux on the desktop. Full story here: http://news.com.com/E-mail+crucial+to+future+of+desktop+Linux/2100-7344_3-5… What I wondered was what does an enterprise e-mail client do that's different from my thunderbird. Is it just the calender? is it notes. I have tried, and hated outlook, probably as I use just e-mail and dont like the complexity of all the other things, but what would happen in an enterprise situation. If you understand this article, can you explain what the novell and mozilla offerings will mean, and will this be the outlook killer. What does outlook do that so vital? Is this another case of its not the same, or are we really missing out on something? any enterprise experince that can help a tech like me understand this ? Is there a really good app for this, could something be done to solve this. After all e-mail is the number 1 app for the net, search is 2 and then web surfing. 2 and 3 are fine, are we missing the boat on 1? I thinks its sufficiently linux related. do we have the Guru's in the lug that could solve this?

Hi again Aristotle. All is, I believe, now resolved. Your latest script didn't work as you'd intended. Each time xmms finished its chore, it sat there without closing. As there were two wma test files to be converted, that meant that xmms had to be closed twice manually before the script finished. (When, however, the script was helped in that way, it ultimately produced two perfect mp3 test files.) I don't know that I'm expressing this properly, but what I had found by trial and error with my script was that the "xmmsctrl quit" command didn't seem to do anything unless there'd been an antecedent "xmmsctrl launch" command; it wasn't enough merely to have earlier started xmms by typing its own name, followed by a reference to a file to be played. When I added to your latest script, immediately before the line "xmms "$src"", the line "xmmsctrl launch", then the script ran from beginning to end without interruption, with xmms opening and closing at the appropriate points. At the same time, by running and rerunning the script and checking the results, I found that the script didn't do its job properly if, when it ran, there was already in the .xmms directory a file called xmms.m3u, which, as I understand it, is a playlist file. I therefore added to the line "xmmsctrl launch" the word "clear" and that put an end to that problem, although if with any potential adverse consequences, I'm not now aware. You asked me whether I had MPlayer. The answer's no. I'm doing all this on an ancient laptop running DSL. I tried to get MPlayer to run on it, but it wouldn't for some reason I can't now remember. In any event, even if it would, it'd be very cramped, given the ancient laptop's specifications. You also raised the issue of changing the script so that it would convert other audio file formats as well. I believe I understand how that could be done, but the circumstances in which I'm struggling with all this are peculiar. I gave the laptop to the son of friends and he's the one who asks me for things he wants to be able to do. I then try to work out (or, to be more accurate, try to get others to work out!) how to do them. The only kind of file he says he wants to convert to mp3 is wma, so, at least for now, the script can be used as it is. My warmest thanks for all the help you've given me with this. Best wishes, Leslie

slmodem problem

Hi I'm currently having a problem with connecting to my ISP. I'm not sure if it's a setup problem or a protocal problem--I thought I had set up my modem and driver, but when it connects from the terminal (just after it's sending my password), this type of message comes up: --> Don't know what to do! Starting pppd and hoping for the best. --> Starting pppd at Mon May 15 18:19:03 2006 --> pid of pppd: 4635 --> Using interface ppp0 --> Disconnecting at Mon May 15 18:19:34 2006 --> The PPP daemon has died: PPP negotiation failed (exit code = 10) --> man pppd explains pppd error codes in more detail. --> I guess that's it for now, exiting --> The PPP daemon has died. (exit code = 10) Any help for this new Linux user would be appreciated, Xiao _________________________________________________________________ Need a new job? Hi Aristotle. It was very generous of you to take so much time over "my" script, which, as I mentioned earlier, was almost entirely a mere cobbling together by me of bits and pieces which I'd taken from others. Given that you'd created an alternative script, I took the liberty of trying it out. Having saved it and made it executable by all, I then tried to run it in a terminal window. The directory in which I was when I did so contained two .wma files, Beethoven1.wma, which was a re-named file I'd copied over from my Windows computer, and Beethoven2.wma, which was just a copy of Beethoven1.wma, created so that I could test what happened when I tried to convert multiple files from wma to mp3. This is what happened. I got the following output: "Beethoven1.wma => Beethoven1.wma.wav Could not find "Beethoven1.wma.wav". Beethoven2.wma => Beethoven2.wma.wav" and then the graphical representation of the xmms player appeared on the screen, without any activity being apparent. After some time when nothing had happened, I tried to close that representation, but its close box wouldn't respond. I then closed the terminal window, upon which the xmms window closed too. I then opened xmms and checked the output plugin situation. I found that the output plugin was Disk Writer, which I'd expected, since the script hadn't had the chance to restore the OSS plugin. If what I've reported above suggests to you some tiny glitch in your script and you don't feel that you've spent too much time on it already, I'd be grateful to hear what amendment should be made to it. Best wishes, Leslie

Thank you to all those who took the trouble to reply to my post. Further consideration convinced me that I needed an application additional to xmms to do what I ultimately wanted to do. (What I ultimately wanted to do was to be able to convert files in .wma format to .mp3 format.) That additional application was xmmsctrl and it worked to close xmms. The script I was working on is now in the following form and does do the necessary conversion: #### #!/bin/bash sed -i "s/libOSS.so/libdisk_writer.so/g" ~/.xmms/config for i in *.wma do filename=`basename "$i" .wma` echo "Converting $i to .wav" xmmsctrl launch xmms "$i" while `xmmsctrl playing`; do sleep 1 done xmmsctrl quit lame "${i/wma/wav}" "${i/wma/mp3}" && rm -f ${i/wma/wav} done sed -i "s/libdisk_writer.so/libOSS.so/g" ~/.xmms/config #### Everything of any worth in the script has been derived from others, but I'm sure that the way in which I've put those things together breaks most, if not all, the rules about correct script writing. At least the script works (for now!). Thanks again, Leslie

I have an icon for xmms on my desktop. I click on the icon; xmms opens in its own little window. I open a terminal. I type in it kill -9 $(pidof xmms) and press Enter. The xmms window closes. I have a bash script. A line in it runs xmms, at which point xmms's little window opens and converts a .wma file to a .wav file. The next line in the script says kill -9 $(pidof xmms), but it doesn't work to close the xmms window. That window stays open until I click on the close box in the top right of the window. Why doesn't the kill command work in the second case when it works in the first?

DSE did not tell me that it would work they said that it should, if not right now then at a future time when the firmware became available. You probably can still get the wireless to work by using a card (maybe dse would help you with that, saves them getting a whole computer back) until the new version is on stream. Another alternative might be to take your machine to the meeting there are tons of lan experts to give you help.. > > I should have done some homework before I signed the > dotted line, although I am going to use the 14 day return > to get this steamer back to where it belongs. Fedora Core 5 problems?
by Michael McDonald 19 May '06

19 May '06

Recently I upgraded to Fedora Core 5. Some things I like, some I don't, but that's usual when you have an OS upgrade (or replacement). This time around, there seems to be a few more problems. First problem was with yum and updates. pup (software updater) wouldn't run. Solution to that was in the FAQ - a replacement yum.conf file. Yum Extender did work, but there was a fair bit of guessing as to which repositories to use (I'm not a Linux expert!). Following software updates I did on Wednesday, cups refused to start (cups was among the updates). Remote assistance from a family member (he likes puzzles!) gave me a work around - involved changing ownership of files and changes to cupsd.conf, and then running cupsd in foreground. Adobe Reader no longer runs - but I haven't bothered to chase that one up as there are alternatives. Anyway, I'm not asking for assistance. Just want to know if anyone else has run into these problems. I couldn't find anything on the Net. Any comments? I'm tempted to try Ubuntu 6.06 in the near future. Michael

I haven't done it much in recent years but in the past chipmakers wouldn't even ask for the cost of shipping the books to NZ. I installed the same distribution on another old laptop which I have, so that I could try to help him if problems arose. We have been able to solve some problems that way, but it's a slow process, with me doing things on my laptop, then emailing instructions to him. I remember working in the past at workplaces big enough to have their own hurt desks and having my computer taken over by someone else in an attempt to solve some problem I had. That's made me wonder what the equivalent Linux software is. I wouldn't have to run that software on my DSL laptop, but could run it on my Fedora desktop, taking over the other DSL laptop over the Internet. I'd be very grateful if someone could recommend any such software, just to get me started.

This lets you fly toasters around on top of your applications. Please debate the usefulness of this feature! Craig

Thanks and raincoat
by Justin Hyde 04 May '06

04 May '06

A big thank you to the linux (and mythtv) experts who helped out at the workshop last Saturday. Certainly I got a lot out of the day, I reckon I could get mythtv going by myself now. If anyone wants some help then we could test that theory. One of our mature members, who arrived around 3pm, left his raincoat at my place. Please contact me at 8562454 to arrange pickup. Cheers guys! Justin Hyde

Fibre
by Oliver Jones 03 May '06

03 May '06

I've deleted the email I was going to respond to... damn. Anyway, regarding LLU, the PDF pointed to makes a good point. Really people should be trying to get access to the ground so they can lay fibre. There is some sort of ruling in NY that makes it compulsory for all utility companies to co-operate on all ditch digging activities. If one company wants to lay a cable all other companies must also lay cable in the same ditch. If they don't they can't dig up the same part of the street for some long period of time. I believe this bylaw was put in place because NY city residents were complaining bitterly about the near constant road works and such due to cable/telecoms companies. Regards

Acceptable use of the WLUG Mailing List
by Meeting Reminder bot 30 Apr '06

30 Apr '06

Problem with .rpm files
by Leslie Katz 30 Apr '06

30 Apr '06

Thanks to both Shane and Michael for their replies. Shane, like you, I doubted that rpm would be found in DSL. However, to my surprise, the question in DSL, "whereis rpm", led to the answer, "/usr/bin/rpm". It seems then that it wasn't any absence of rpm which caused the DSL version of alien not to work for me as I'd hoped. Michael, my "real" distribution, if I can put it that way, is Fedora Core 3. Alien's not included in it. I did a search and ultimately found alien-8.21-1.noarch.rpm. When I tested an installation of it, I got on the usual dependency roundabout. The last message I got when I tested an installation of alien plus four additional perl-type rpms was "perl <1:5.8.0 conflicts with perl-base-5.8.8.4.i386". Since the latter file was one of those rpms whose installation I was testing, I took that to be a complaint that the version of perl I already had installed was less than 1:5.8.0. When I checked which version of perl I had installed, I was told it was perl-5.8.5-24.FC3.i386.rpm. At that stage, I threw up my hands, it being all beyond me. As to your kind offer to convert the two rpms for me, one of them is only 93.78 Kbytes in size, but the other is 3.61 Mbytes, a size too large to be passed back and forth by email. In spite of all the above, I don't want to give up trying to get the files converted and installed. It seems a shame if the printer will run in many other distributions, but not in DSL. So if you have (or anyone else has) any further ideas, I'd be very happy to try to apply them. Thanks again, Leslie

Problem with .rpm files
by Leslie Katz 28 Apr '06

28 Apr '06

For the son of friends who live a long way away, I converted an old laptop to run under Damn Small Linux, so that the son would no longer have to use the family computer. The friends have a Lexmark X1150 PrintTrio and they've asked whether I could get that gadget working with the old laptop, at least as a printer. I've found that many people have been able to get that gadget running as a printer under various distributions, including Debian and Ubuntu. In the case of the latter two distributions, people have downloaded a compressed file from Lexmark said by it to be intended for RedHat Linux 9.0, extracted from it two .rpm files, converted those two .rpm files into .deb files using alien and then installed the two .deb files. After that, they've been able to print with CUPS. Using a second old laptop which I also set up to run under DSL, I've been trying to duplicate the process just mentioned, with a view to giving instructions to my friends to follow on the laptop which they have. I've got as far as extracting the two .rpm files, but am stuck at the conversion to .deb stage. DSL has a version of alien available, but I haven't been successful at using it to convert the two .rpm files into .deb files. The persons who've given instructions about this exercise on the Web seem not to have been troubled very much about which version of their own distribution they were using, but simply reported success in installing the .deb files they'd created. If I could get the two .rpm files converted into .deb files via alien by someone running Debian or Ubuntu, is there any prospect that I could then take those files and install them successfully on my DSL computer? Or is it necessary that the conversion take place on the computer on which the files are intended to be installed? If the latter (which is my own guess), does anyone have any suggestion as to how I could proceed otherwise? For instance, would it be possible to convert the .rpm files to source files and then install the source files on the DSL computer? I'd welcome any advice. Thanks, Leslie

Canon 250i printer
by Leslie Katz 21 Apr '06

21 Apr '06

You may have already swept by this, but just in case: 1. http://linuxprinting.org was very helpful to me when I got my printer going; and 2. there's an O'Reilly book by Carla Schroder called "Linux Cookbook". There was up on the Web, when I was setting up my printer, a sample chapter. It was about printing and, again, it was very helpful to me.

Canon 250i printer

Please can anyone help me - I have a canon 250i printer. I believe that you can get it to run with Redhat and Fedora - there are a whole span of drivers on the Canon site - as a relatively unskilled Linux user, I just cannot get the printer working using Ubuntu (which I love by the way). Does anyone know how to get the damn thing to work with Ubuntu? Cheers John

Acceptable use of the WLUG Mailing List
by Meeting Reminder bot 31 Mar '06

31 Mar '06

Free Remote Access to LinuxPPC64 Servers for Open Source Developers
by Craig Box 28 Mar '06

28 Mar '06

Forwarded from Robert MacFarlan [Robert_MacFarlan(a)us.ibm.com] Hello, I am mailing a few of the more active Linux User Groups in Australia to make them aware of community-based remote access systems that have become available. These systems are open to any Open Source Linux developer interested in developing / porting / or just tinkering w/ Linux on high-performance 64-bit IBM POWER5 or PPC970 systems. In the case of Australian National University's system - brought on-line last week - they are hosting a 4-way system w/ 16GB of RAM. This system can be a great place to test SMP and memory scalability. If any of your members are interested in working on these systems they are more than welcome to request an account. Additional systems will be added in the coming months. Australia National University: (http://clug.anu.edu.au/) Other systems being hosted world-wide include: Oregon State University Open Source Lab - PPC970 running Gentoo ( http://wiki.osuosl.org/display/PPC64/Home) SourceForge.net compile farm - POWER5 running SLES ( http://sourceforge.net/docs/compile_farm#cf_overview) University of Portland Linux on Power Portal - POWER5 running SLES ( http://egr.up.edu:8080/) University of Augsburg Debian on PowerPC - POWER5 running Debian ( http://tuxppc.rz.uni-augsburg.de/) Linux on Power @ Peking University - POWER5 running SLES ( http://ppclinux.pku.edu.cn/) Thank you for your time, and if you have any questions, please feel free to let me know. Cheers, Robert MacFarlan Strategist ISV Global Solutions Enablement IBM

ANNOUNCE: WLUG meeting is one week away
by Meeting Reminder Bot 28 Mar '06

28 Mar '06

The Waikato Linux Users Group have a meeting in one week from today: ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Our guest for March is Linda Wright. Her talk is entitled ''New Business Models for Open Source (http://www.wlug.org.nz/OpenSource) Advocates and Developers'': ;: "In a nutshell, I plan to survey some of the past Commercial and http://www.wlug.org.nz/OSS business models (from the anarchic and utopian to the present) and discuss some of the commercial implications of these. I then intend to discuss three contemporary OSS business models, their virtues and limitations, and the new trend of large so-called 'old economy' companies solving the problem of OSS competition by buying out start-ups. Then I will move on to talk about the business model of Concentus, which I believe is fairly unique, and how I believe it addresses some of the classical problems that both commercial and OSS developers face with their respective models. Anyone who has ever wondered how the heck you can make money out of supposedly free software should probably attend." Linda Wright is the former Software Development Manager for Toll New Zealand (http://www.tollnz.co.nz) (Corporate). Linda is a native of San Francisco, California and has over 20 years experience in Software Development (http://www.wlug.org.nz/SoftwareEngineering) SDLC Management] and Business Consulting. Some of her personal career highlights include developing one of the world's first Visual Software Development Environments (1989), the creation of a complex problem solving methodology called 'The Resolution of Complexity' (1992), and a http://www.wlug.org.nz/patent for a Telephonic Transaction System (1998) (http://www.wipo.int/ipdl/IPDL-CIMAGES/view/pct/getbykey5?KEY=00/18088.000330) Linda is the managing director of a film production company called Pretty Good Productions Ltd, and has recently formed Concentus Ltd, an [Auckland-based technology company. Location is TW.2.07 (http://www.wlug.org.nz/TW) at the University of Waikato (http://www.wlug.org.nz/UniversityOfWaikato) Meeting will start at 7:30pm. Refreshments will be available afterwards.
