I'm asking $20 each, but if you're interested, make an offer! Cheers, - Eric

What do I need do to refer the user to the invalid input prompt?? Regards John

I came across this in Linux User magazine. It supposed to be slightly more interactive and user friendly shell to Bash. sudo apt-get install fish then at the command line in bash, type fish (you might have to logout and login to make the fish shell available) The shell will change to the fish shell. The main difference I've noticed is the colours and that tab completion is a little more sophisticated. Here's the main website http://www.fishshell.org/ have fun.

penguin suit
by Cairo Kingsbury 01 Mar '07

For software freedom day we got Mystique costumes to make us a tux penguin suit. Lots of people thought it was very cool and I think we should use it at lots more events but at the moment we have to book it in advance and pay $15 to hire it. I think WLUG should buy it so we can use it any time and we should use it a lot more. We asked and Mystique will sell it to us for $150 which is only the same as hiring it ten times. What does everyone else think?

Traffic monitoring
by Glenn Ramsey 23 Feb '07

23 Feb '07

Hi, I recently got a wireless broadband service installed and my data allowance is small (and expensive too!). I noticed that something on my network is using about 3Mb/hour and I need to find that and switch it off. I have a Debian box and a Windows XP box on the network connected like this: SIU---router~~wireless link~~access point---switch--PCs where SIU is the wireless service interface unit, equivalent to a DSL modem. I am assuming that the traffic I need to monitor is coming from one of my PCs and not the router so I want to install a traffic monitoring program on the Debian box. There seem to be lots of them available so can anyone suggest one that would be suitable for this application? Ideally it would have minimal configuration requirements. TIA Glenn BTW The router is a Linksys WRT54Gv5 and I tried the Linux based DD-WRT firmware which has many more features than the native firmware but the router's wireless interface wouldn't work properly with it. -- Glenn Ramsey <glenn(a)componic.co.nz> 07 8627077 http://www.componic.co.nz

Woof won't work. Why?
by Leslie Katz 18 Feb '07

18 Feb '07

I've plugged my modem and more than one computer into an Ethernet switch, so that any computer plugged into the switch can use my Internet connection. On a couple of occasions, I've wanted to transfer a file from one of the plugged-in computers to another (both using Linux) and have been able to do so via ssh. A few days ago, I learnt about Woof: http://enterprise.linux.com/print.pl?sid=07/02/07/2118208, and decided to try it instead of ssh. I followed the instructions in the document and got the transferor computer to announce that it was serving, on a specified URL, the file I wanted to transfer. However, when I tried to go to that URL using Opera on the transferee computer, all I got was the hour glass; nothing else happened. I then tried wget instead. Then, I got the output "connecting to" the specified URL, but again nothing else happened. I'm satisfied that the connection problem isn't a firewall one. The transferor computer uses Firestarter and it gives no indication that it's refusing the attempted connection from the transferee computer. I've just installed the OS on the transferee computer and haven't yet added a firewall. Opera and wget both work otherwise than when I try to connect to the transferor computer. What other reasons might there be for the transferee computer not to connect to the transferor one?

Read-write access to an ext3 partition
by Roderick Aldridge 11 Feb '07

11 Feb '07

I want to be able to read-write to one of my ext3 partitions as an ordinary user as I can to the home partition and the FAT32 partitions. I am running Kubuntu Edgy which uses UUIDs in /etc/fstab which I haven't got the hang of yet (for everything except floppies and CDROMs). e.g. # /dev/hdd2 UUID=xxxxxxxx-xxxx-xxxx-xxxx-xxxxxxxxx /media/hdd2 ext3 defaults 0 2 # /dev/hdd1 UUID=xxxxxxxx-xxxx-xxxx-xxxx-xxxxxxxx /media/hddboot ext3 defaults 0 2 and for the FAT32 partitions: # /dev/hdb1 UUID=xxxx-xxxx /media/win-c vfat defaults,utf8,umask=007,gid=46 0 0 # /dev/hdb5 UUID=xxxx-xxxx /media/win-data vfat defaults,utf8,umask=007,gid=46 0 0 # /dev/hda7 The umask option seems to be available only on FAT32 partitions and just adding user or users to the ext3 options doesn't do the trick. I have Googled and looked at the Edgy manual but can't find anything that quite explains how to do it in the approved way - not one that I can understand anyway. Can somebody point me to the right way of doing this? TIA Rod

Fwd: [ANNOUNCE] d80211 based driver for Intel PRO/Wireless 3945ABG
by Ian McDonald 09 Feb '07

09 Feb '07

Useful drivers for people if you have a reasonably new notebook. ---------- Forwarded message ---------- From: James Ketrenos <jketreno(a)linux.intel.com> Date: Feb 10, 2007 10:12 AM Subject: [ANNOUNCE] d80211 based driver for Intel PRO/Wireless 3945ABG To: linux-kernel(a)vger.kernel.org, linux-wireless(a)vger.kernel.org, ipw3945-devel(a)lists.sourceforge.net, netdev(a)vger.kernel.org Please hold all questions until I am done with this email. Thank you. We are pleased to announce the availability of a new driver for the Intel PRO/Wireless 3945ABG Network Connection adapter. This new driver uses the new d80211 subsystem previously only available as part of the wireless-dev tree. You can find the new driver, and additional information about it, here: http://intellinuxwireless.org/iwlwifi. Within the new driver package are sources which we plan to submit for kernel inclusion as well as scripts and patches which create a version of the driver which can be loaded into kernels based on 2.6.18 and newer (provided you have installed the d80211 subsystem as well) The README document can walk you through pretty quickly. Since a lot of our users are not able to move to the latest versions of the Linux kernel, we have put together a d80211 package allowing the installation of the d80211 subsystem into an existing kernel image without the need to migrate to wireless-dev, or upgrade to a newer kernel at all (assuming you are using 2.6.18 or newer). You can find that package at: http://intellinuxwireless.org/d80211 Ok. Now... any questions? Thanks, James / Intel Corporation - To unsubscribe from this list: send the line "unsubscribe netdev" in the body of a message to majordomo(a)vger.kernel.org More majordomo info at http://vger.kernel.org/majordomo-info.html -- Web: http://wand.net.nz/~iam4 Blog: http://iansblog.jandi.co.nz WAND Network Research Group

RimuHosting Hiring (Yes, Again)
by Peter Bryant 26 Jan '07

26 Jan '07

Hi. I'm looking for someone(s) to do Linux support work for RimuHosting: setup people's Linux servers, install Linux apps, troubleshoot problems and the like. It can be very interesting, challenging work. You get to play with _lots_ of servers, distros and get exposure, it seems, to any app that runs on Linux. For those that don't know, RimuHosting is based in Cambridge and we provide Linux VPS and dedicated server hosting and support to customers dotted all around the world. This job would suit a uni student. Or maybe someone who is looking to do more than just manage some company's boring old internal servers and apps. If you are available to work part-time (with the possibility of full time work later on) then check out: http://forums.rimuhosting.com/forums/showthread.php?p=645#post645 If you had any questions just reply off list to me. Cheers, Peter http://rimuhosting.com

Dual booting Linux and XP or Vista
by Ian McDonald 24 Jan '07

There's an excellent write up here: http://apcmag.com/5162/the_definitive_dual_booting_guide_linux_vista_and_xp Basically summary is install XP/Vista before Linux if possible, but if you can't they explain how to work in with Microsoft boot tools and installers (Vista has become more complex, not simpler). Also mentions two very useful tools: http://gparted.sourceforge.net/ http://neosmart.net/dl.php?id=1 This also talks about how to do xp/vista dual boot if you want as well. Correcting filesystem errors
by Leslie Katz 10 Jan '07

10 Jan '07

Thanks very much for putting me right about the above, Daniel. Using mkfs (instead of fdisk) allowed me to replace the filesystems on the my three Linux partitions and, when I ran fsck afterwards on each of those partitions, I got a clean bill of health (though I understand your warning about the hard disk possibly going bad). I'm now onto re-installing DSL. Thanks again, Leslie

Correcting filesystem errors
by Leslie Katz 09 Jan '07

09 Jan '07

I have an old Compaq laptop I'm trying to fix for the son of friends. I'm the one who gave him the laptop, with Damn Small Linux installed on the machine's only hard disk, so that he could use the thing for browsing, email, instant messaging, etc. When I set it up, I had four partitions: 1. hda1 was the boot partition. It started at cylinder 5 and went to 483. I put a regular Linux filesystem on it, ID 83. 2. hda2 started at cylinder 484 and went to 961. I put a regular Linux filesystem on it too, ID 83. 3. hda3 started at cylinder 1 and went to 4. I put a Compaq diagnostics filesystem on it, ID 12. I have a vague memory of learning at the time I was setting up the laptop that the BIOS for the computer was on the hard disk and that's why I had hda3. 4. hda4 started at cylinder 962 and went to 993. I put a Linux swap filesystem on it, ID 82. When I took the computer back to try to fix it, I was aware that there were lots of filesystem problems being reported. At the same time, I thought I'd take the opportunity to upgrade to the latest version of DSL for the boy. I thought the best way to proceed was to boot up using a Knoppix live cd in text mode, delete the existing partions 1, 2 and 4 and add new partitions 1,2 and 4 with the same filesystems as the original partitions had had before. I did that using fdisk and was told I'd have to reboot before my changes took effect. I did that and then tried to run fsck /dev/hda1. I thought there'd be no problem reported by fsck, because I thought that replacing the partitions as I'd done would have overwritten everything on them. However, that doesn't seem to be right. fsck found errors and asked me to confirm every change it suggested as it went along. I didn't want to have to do that, so I exited and ran fsck -p /dev/hda1 instead. However, that didn't work either. It kept telling me that because of unexpected inconsistencies, I had to proceed manually. How do I obliterate everything on hda but hda3 and create my other partitions and filesystems afresh, in a way that puts an end to existing filesystem errors?

So who else has drawn the short straw and is working through this year? The cafe in the building is closed, the coffee is a barely acceptable substitute for the real thing and the workload is normal only there's fewer people to do it :) However, it is not all gloom and doom :) At least I still have my annual leave time for a holiday in the new year - that'll be cool! Hi First is to identify the modem chipset. You can do this visually or use scanmodem from http://www.linmodems.org/ You unzip the file and make it executable by running the command chmom +x scanModem Note the capital "M" then run it ./scanModem It will output to the home directory a file identifying the chipset and where to find drivers, if available. Also check out the Ubuntu wiki https://help.ubuntu.com/community/DialupModemHowto It was very good for setting up an Intel 536 modem "which is still available" Good luck David Bowen

Help with configuring modem under Ubuntu DD
by James Pluck 22 Dec '06

22 Dec '06

Hi all, A friend of mine is trying to set up dialup internet on his computer under Ubuntu (as a gift for his wife so she can keep in touch with a good friend who's moved back to England - It's a surprise for Christmas). He and I have done our best to get things going but no joy. The modem is reporting as a HCF 56K voice/data/fax but we don't know the make as the computer was bought second hand with no supporting documentation :( Is there anyone out there who is adept at getting modems to work under Ubuntu who could help us get this working? We discovered that the Windows XP (original version - prior even to SP1) that is on the HDD (we installed Ubuntu to dual boot) is a pirated copy so it won't allow us to update the security patches and get things working under windows in the meantime. Any help would be appreciated. James. -- James Pluck PalmOS Ergo Sum

Help with configuring modem under Ubuntu DD
by Leslie Katz 21 Dec '06

21 Dec '06

My view of these things is, no doubt, tainted, but when I got a used machine with an HCF modem already in it and set it up for a friend, I bought the Linuxant driver as the best way to get the thing going quickly. Upgrading kernels since hasn't presented any problem--the licence is perpetual, it seems, including upgraded drivers. Also, I had some problem, the nature of which I can't now recall, and asked Linuxant for assistance. I got it immediately by email and the problem turned out not to be a driver problem. (Maybe it was a wvdial problem.) However, the tech person, Jonathan, helped me sort it out over a couple more emails, even though I acknowledged to him that I knew he had no obligation to do so. Job hunting in Hamilton
by Bryce Utting 13 Dec '06

13 Dec '06

Hi all, Sorry about the WLUG-wide post, but hunting and chasing contacts and watching the agencies for over a year so far hasn't turned up anything yet. 'Tis a one-off message, I promise. Living in Pukekohe is just too much of a cost, so I'm trying to find a job back home in Hamilton. I've been working as an IT manager (JOAT: Windows, BSD, Samba, Apache, Perl, Postfix, etc) since 2001 and was a VB developer for a couple of years before that. The gotcha is that for health reasons I have to limit my work hours to 20 a week, which is why no-one's taken me up so far. (Yes, the university frequently job-shares, but their pay scales would mean a pay cut I can't afford.) Half-time jobs very rarely get listed, and my experience is that they only become available when an employer realises (a) they have a desperate need for someone with experience, but (b) they can't free up $80-$100K. If anyone knows of someone who's quietly despairing of finding someone they can afford but could work with those hours, I'd dearly love to hear about it. Address is as per header, CV available on request. I'd prefer to avoid short-term work if at all possible. And, yes, I'm fully resigned to many more months of searching. Sigh. Fwd: [nzlug] OpenMedia formally release their Web based Virtual Remote add on for MythTV
by Ian McDonald 11 Dec '06

11 Dec '06

I know some people here are keen on Myth TV so forwarding. ---------- Forwarded message ---------- From: Steven Ellis <mail_lists(a)stevencherie.net> Date: Dec 12, 2006 9:54 AM Subject: [nzlug] OpenMedia formally release their Web based Virtual Remote add on for MythTV To: aucklug(a)linux.net.nz, nzlug(a)linux.net.nz The primary aim for this was to assist customers with disabilities or access issues that would prevent them from using a conventional remote control to use their MythTV units. We have worked very closely with a customer who has Cerebral Palsy to come up with a layout that was both simple and obvious. As part of OpenMedia's commitment to the Open Source community all of this development is being released back to the MythTV team under standard Open Source Licenses. The initial release is now available on-line, and you can find more details at http://www.mythtv.co.nz/mythtv/?p=29 Steve. -- Steven Ellis - Technical Director OpenMedia Limited email - steven(a)openmedia.co.nz sales - sales(a)openmedia.co.nz support - support(a)openmedia.co.nz website - http://www.openmedia.co.nz _______________________________________________ NZLUG mailing list NZLUG(a)linux.net.nz http://www.linux.net.nz/cgi-bin/mailman/listinfo/nzlug -- Web: http://wand.net.nz/~iam4 Blog: http://imcdnzl.blogspot.com WAND Network Research Group

Java problem
by Leslie Katz 09 Dec '06

09 Dec '06

I posted a message a short time ago and don't know how to edit it, assuming that's possible, so I send this follow-on message. I kept looking for an answer to my problem after sending my original post and just found it. I record it, just in case it should be of use to someone who searches the archive later with a similar problem. As root, I did: mv /usr/bin/java /usr/bin/java.old ln -s /usr/java/jre1.5.0_09/bin/java /usr/bin/java Now, all works. Apologies for troubling people unnecessarily. Leslie

Government overhauls copyright law.
by Ian McDonald 08 Dec '06

08 Dec '06

Folks, Here is a major announcement from the government: http://www.beehive.govt.nz/ViewDocument.aspx?DocumentID=28024 and the actual proposed legislation is here: http://www.parliament.nz/NR/rdonlyres/5A88D15B-C4A1-42C2-AE75-9200DD87F738/… Some quick highlights as I read the act: (Note I am not a lawyer) - Reverse engineering IS allowed under some circumstances - basically for interoperability - format shifting is allowed but only initially for 2 years, this can be extended though (or not) - time shifting is allowed provided you don't keep it and it's not available on demand - ISPs are basically not liable (provided they follow take down notices) - allowed to alter commercial software if the vendor doesn't fix problems in reasonable time - anti-TPM (DRM via another name) is prohibited for sale or for producing (seems to cover open source). Fines of $150K or 5 years jail. Doesn't seem to prohibit if you have a copy but you can't write it yourself, sell it or tell others about it. Does make it an offence if you use it to copy copyrighted material. But you are allowed to use anti-TPM for "interoperability of software" so conceivably you could use software to play Itunes or DVDs on Linux. But this only applies if you have asked vendor for a copy you can use and they don't supply in a reasonable time. Overall this seems to be much better than DMCA of the USA but not perfect. It is probably better than people could have hoped for. Ian -- Web: http://wand.net.nz/~iam4 Blog: http://imcdnzl.blogspot.com WAND Network Research Group

Java problem
by Leslie Katz 08 Dec '06

08 Dec '06

When I test my Java Virtual Machine at www.java.com, I'm congratulated (no less), told I have the latest version, 1.5.0_09, and told that the JRE is functioning correctly. However, when, in a terminal, I issue the command "java -version", I get the following message: Error occurred during initialization of VM java/lang/NoClassDefFoundError: java/lang/Object I've tried to figure out how to resolve the contradiction in favour of the former statement, but it's beyond me. A snippet I've perhaps understood seems to suggest that rt.jar has the class file for java.lang.Object. I looked for rt.jar on my system and found I had two of them: /usr/lib/jre/lib/rt.jar; and /usr/java/jre1.5.0_09/lib/rt.jar. Why I have two, I don't know. The first one is smaller and seems to be older. I tried renaming it to rt.jar.old and then issuing the java -version command again. That had no positive effect, so I renamed it rt.jar again. Another snippet suggested that the problem might be that rt.jar was not included in the boot class path. I'm not sure if that's the same thing as not having the correct entry for JAVA_HOME, but I saw it suggested that, if there was no entry identifying Java's "home directory" Java might fail to identify its home directory. I found an entry about JAVA_HOME in /etc/profile.d/java.sh. It was: export JAVA_HOME=/usr/bin/java. Well, /usr/bin/java bears no resemblance to either of the two directories where I found the two rt.jar files. I did try substituting export JAVA_HOME=/usr/java/jre1.5.0_09/ for the original entry, but that didn't work. If anyone has any further suggestions, I'd be grateful. Leslie PS Maybe I should add that when I run Firefox 2.0 and get a list of plugins, the java plugin is there. It seems to be working properly.

Re: [wlug] I've seen the light
by elroy 06 Dec '06

06 Dec '06

My story: I have a requirement for a reliable, semi-up-to-date PC, that would keep my data reasonably safe if a HDD went South [1]. I would also like to be able to play the occasional Win32 game on it. Also, being faster than a Celeron-400 would be a bonus. I decided to get an IBM Netfinity 5100 (IBM x230?) - currently it has Dual-P-3-733s/1.2GB RAM/36GB RAID-5 Ultra160 SCSI/1x 10KRPM 36GB SCSI, with DVD-RW. Being slightly wary of Linux, I went about installing and using Win2k on it. Whether this is actually supported on this hardware would be interesting to find out - I'm guessing not, due to the USB issues I had... anything USB, and BSOD. Joy. I had a spare machine (Celeron-400), with USB stick that needed files from BenQ old digital camera copied to it. The Netfinity wouldn't budge, and ended up being unable to get past the boot prompt. Chucked an old copy of Ubuntu (5.04? Live CD) I was given at one of the WLUG meetings I attended, into the Celeron machine, it fired up, I connected the USB stick, it auto-mounted it, and I could see and access my files. Thought that was pretty cool, so connected the camera - same thing happened... I was impressed. I got the job done. I gave the Ubuntu CD a quick whirl on the Netfinity - and haven't looked back :-) Currently have an Intel SRCS14L plus 2x 320GB SATA to go into the Netfinity as RAID-1. Currently trying to figure out best way to get data transferred from Netfinity==>Celeron; remove SCSI RAID gear (insufficient capacity), install Intel RAID controller, setup, then move data from Celeron==>Netfinity again. Questions: Any reference pointers to NFS for noobs would be appreciated - having issues with identifying where exactly it is/isn't working... :-) Am learning a reasonable amount, however. Failing NFS, any Samba info would be appreciated - D/L'ing Samba packages plus docs at the moment... Recommendations for partitioning scheme please? Current Idea: Out of ~300GB: =GRUB= ===500MB /boot=B== ====4GB Linux Swap==== =====4GB Windows Swap===== ???? PROFIT! ======60GB Windows NTFS===B=== =======60GB Linux Business===B==== ========60GB Linux Play/Testing===B===== =========60GB Data1 FAT32=========== ==========60GB Data2 FAT32=========== Any help appreciated :-) Elroy. [1] A regular backup plan is also on the agenda... :P

Date for Xmas bbq - 9th or 10th?
by Ian McDonald 22 Nov '06

22 Nov '06

Folks, We were going to have the BBQ on Saturday the 9th because of the Santa Parade on the 10th. However at least one person can't make it on the 9th because of other commitments. The santa parade is likely to be finished by early afternoon but I understand that people with families mightn't want to be going out all day to events. Can anybody who can't make it on the 9th or 10th please email me so that we can find the date that affects the least number of people. Upgrade problems

16 Nov '06

Just a short post to that you all for you help. A really big thanks to Bruce who spent a number of hours trying to solve my problem. It is great to have so many people happy to help a novice like me. I was unable to solve my upgrade problem in the end and I reloaded Dapper. I did come across the following which may have solved my problem - it may be helpful to someone. /*no text status messages in ubuntu edgy 6.10 splash screen* After upgrading from ubuntu 6.06 to ubuntu 6.10, usplash stopped working, Ubuntu started displaying a blank screen during startup and shutdown. *Solution* Edgy disabled the status messages in Usplash, but you can get them back easily using the following commands. First, open your menu.lst gksudo gedit /boot/grub/menu.lst Now you remove any mention of “quiet” from the file. You should get the messages again next time you boot./ /November 2nd, 2006 at 8:30 am <http://www.debianadmin.com/ubuntu-edgy-upgrade-common-problems-with-solutio…> In “text and splash doesn’t after upgrade to edgy” section, sudo gedit /boot/grub/menu.lst should be a tiny typo of gksudo gedit /boot/grub/menu.lst/ Dapper is working for me and so I will probably just stick with it for the moment Cheers John

ADS Realm - Openfiler configuration
by Chris O'Halloran 13 Nov '06

13 Nov '06

Hello, I am assisting the setting up of an "openfiler" server at work. www.openfiller.com Its on a network using Active Directories and I want openfiler to be visible on the network. One authentication question I have is what consitutes the ADS realm. Google search bring up lots of questions asked by other people on samba groups etc but I wonder how I can establish it from the windows configuration We've tried "tesla.local" and that seems to work to a certain extent but still can't see the computer on the Windows network. I've wondered if we haven't quite got the ADS realm or is there some other SAMBA setting the probably stopping the server being seen.

This problem seemed to come after I had upgraded from the upgrade icon a few days ago. Ron Dean Read their home page status report. (Ihug) They have had problems due to a large quantity of spam being received. You have to chane some setting in the E-mail client. Below is their instructions for Thunderbird, Evolution was similar Thunderbird: Go to “Tools” --> “Account Settings”, click on the "Outgoing server (SMTP)" field. Depending on your version you will either then un-tick “Use name and password” or click edit then un-tick “Use name and password”. Then “OK” out of those screens.

Re: [wlug] [SPAM] Re: Two flavour install partioning?

Wanker here again. Okay, thanks a lot Chris, that's really helpful. I admit I was suprised no one suggested I do a e2fsk before disk partioning since this used to be standard practice back in the day when I last fuzzily recall doing this kind of thing. So everything seems to be set-up for the disk partioning exercise now and I've got the go ahead on disabling the DMA but the question I now have is there seems to be two options; Do I i) merely make some free space available for Xubu (i.e. just shrink current root (/) and let the Xubu installation decided how to do the actual pationing and naming or ii) set up some partions for Xubu and a boot sector for it (actually will I even need two boot sectors for two linux flavours?) and tell it where to go? If/when a new root directory is made for Xubu will it named root (/) also? Can you have two sector named root(/) on the same hard drive? Re: [wlug] Two flavour install partioning?
by GJB 05 Nov '06

05 Nov '06

Okay, it seems I should apologise, I expect whoever called me a wanker to do the same of course. There seems to be a huge misunderstanding here, my apologies for that. My comment to Matt wasn't intended as a "bite" (what does that mean?). I merely said in a somewhat rural vernacular that it was a "bum stare" (we are in waikato right?), i.e. the advice didn't work for me, not any reflection on Matt. And yes I know all about the "free advice is worth what you pay for it" thingy, I have picked up a few useful tips lurking here and that is appreciated. Messing with disk partions is hair raising stuff for the DIYer, once in a decade partitioner, linux user who values his data for his livelihood, it was late, etc. Anyway no-one, except Matt, has actually offered any useful suggestions on what the problem maybe or even queried what my hardware maybe really be as to where to go from here so I'm not expecting anybody to come up with anything. I cannot for the life of me see how armchair sysadmin types can diagnose harddisk partioning problems without knowing the hardware of the drive they are advising towards. If I have any criticism of anybody, this would be it. No malice intended, just a technical point and that perhaps there should be some more caution on that side of it. Back to the technical issue at hand. So yes Matt I did check the md5sum of the CD image before the burn but had become skeptical of the burn itself, is there anyway of checking the md5sum of the iso image once it is on the CD? Regardless of that, I found the problem with sysrescdd was I had to disable the DMA for the sysresccd to boot up cleanly. Others may want to note this, maybe not. This raises the further questions now: i) Is disabling the DMA before doing hard disk partitioning a safe thing to do? Qtparted seems to give me a GUI and recognises my current partion so that's encouraging. ii) Oh yeah, shouldn't I be doing an e2fsck before doing any disk partioning? For now I'm getting up the gumption to screw around with the partions and make room for Xubu. Thnx for any help so far, particularly Matt. actually, now I think about it, the correct turn of phrase is spelt "bum steer" ... as in a bad animal that one might buy at the sales from time to time. which it wasn't thus far ... so no harm done, yet.

What about a Knoppix live cd as a way into repartitioning? It may work even if sysrecord doesn't.

Two flavour install partioning?
by GJB 04 Nov '06

04 Nov '06

Well Matt, the sysresccd was a bum stare. How many times have you actually used this utility on pre-Millenial Dell laptops? Segmentation Fault untarring the hotplug firmware and unceremoniously hung. Perhaps some more caution before bandying advice about third party disk tools? I was expecting at least a hardware question or two but your misplaced confidence spurred me on. Anybody else got ideas for disk partioning utilities for a Dell '99 era laptop, only ever had linux redhat on it? See previous discussion for what I'm wanting to do. Greg

Two flavour install partitioning?
by GJB 04 Nov '06

04 Nov '06

Hello all, a longtime lurker here, I have an old Dell Laptop that has faithfully run various versions of Redhat over the years. The current hardrive in it has Rh7.3 that I'd like to keep on there for a while yet but I'd also like to put Xubuntu on the same hard drive, tried out the CD test and like it. The drive is currently partitioned with a separate boot, swap space and rest on root (/), all ext3 and no other system has ever been near it ;). Several questions arise: i) can I adjust the partitions of the hardrive to shrink the current root (/), create a new partion to install the Xubunutu on and set-up GRUB bootloader to give me a choice of which system to boot from? Is the best tool to do this fdisk or is there something else out now? ii) will I risk losing any of the current data in "/"? (As always will do a full system back-up first but what's the chances?) iii) will the systems need separate swap drive partitions or will Xubunutu recognise the current swap partition set-up? (No idea if or where config for this would be) iv) can i also partition a new section for to mount the current /home that both systems will then recognise as the new /home? (Just mount table config here I'm picking) Thanx for any help, Greg

Ubuntu 6.10 login problem
by John Torrance 03 Nov '06

03 Nov '06

Thanks for the advice I tried alt control F1 which gave me a command line - and allowed me to log in to a console, however, as I was typing the commands, it then automatically went back to the graphical interface. I then loggin in using the recovery mode which allowed me to run the sudo aptitude update sudo aptitude dist-upgrade this seemed to run until it listed a syntax error with "freemed" which might be an application I tried to install in the past - it then exited back to the command line. When I rebooted, it gave me the same screen - however, it tried to go past it, the screen would flash blank then white and then back to the cream blank screen. Eventually it popped up a box with: "The greeter application appears to be crashing - attempting to use a different one" After I clicked OK, the same thing happened - eventually sticking on the blank cream screen again. Any ideas?

Sorry, I should have been more specific - no, it just hangs - I am unable to log on hence my concern. I could do a fresh install but then I would loose everything on the computer. Thanks for the advice John, but I am an illiterate and the logs, even if I could work out how to boot into safe mode, would be meaningless. With regard to the Graphics card however, the computer has always run fine with all the previous Ubuntu releases that I have used Cheers John

Introducing 'Iceweasel' and 'Icedove'
by Simon Green 01 Nov '06

01 Nov '06

>From this weeks Debian Weekly News: "Firefox becomes Iceweasel. Due to trademark [47]issues the Debian project felt impelled to rename the Firefox web browser to Iceweasel and the Thunderbird mail client to Icedove. Roberto Sanchez [48]explained that the new packages don't contain non-free artwork from the [49]Mozilla Foundation and that security updates will be properly backported. The trademark [50]policy requires that such packages are not distributed under the original name, hence the new names. 47. http://lists.debian.org/debian-legal/2004/12/msg00328.html 48. http://lists.debian.org/debian-devel/2006/10/msg00665.html 49. http://www.mozilla.org/foundation/ 50. http://www.mozilla.org/foundation/trademarks/policy.html " Personally, I see this as the death of debian as a desktop distribution. Ubuntu 6.10 (which includes the non-free logo for the first time) suggests Ubuntu won't be following Debian footsteps in the renaming, thankfully. -- simon

Announcing Ubuntu 6.10
by Simon Green 27 Oct '06

27 Oct '06

---------- Forwarded message ---------- From: Tollef Fog Heen <tfheen(a)ubuntu.com> Date: 26-Oct-2006 23:11 Subject: Announcing Ubuntu 6.10 The Ubuntu team is proud to announce the release of Ubuntu 6.10, codenamed "Edgy Eft". This release includes both installable Desktop CDs and alternate text-mode installation CDs for several architectures. Ubuntu is a Linux distribution for your desktop or server, with a fast and easy install, regular releases, a tight selection of excellent packages installed by default, every other package you can imagine available with a few clicks, and professional technical support from Canonical Limited and hundreds of other companies around the world. Ubuntu 6.10 will be supported for 18 months on both desktops and servers. Note that the previous stable release (6.06 LTS) is a long-term support release, and so users requiring a longer support lifetime may choose to continue using that version rather than upgrade to or install 6.10. To Get Ubuntu 6.10 ------------------ Download Ubuntu 6.10 here: New Zealand: http://nz.releases.ubuntu.com/ubuntu-releases/6.10/ ... To burn these CD images, you will need 700MB media. Ubuntu 6.10 media can also be purchased from a number of retailers. For more information, visit: http://www.ubuntu.com/products/GetUbuntu About Ubuntu 6.10 ----------------- Highlights of this release include: On the desktop This version introduces a host of new features, an improved interface and a wide variety of new applications and desktop tools making Ubuntu 6.10 flexible and user-friendly. Enhancements include: * Tomboy, an easy-to-use and efficient note-taking tool * F-Spot, a photo management tool that enables tagging, photo editing and automatic uploading to on-line web management sites such as Flickr * GNOME 2.16, which in addition to new features such as enhanced power management, makes the GNOME desktop more secure, faster and more stable * Substantially faster startup and shutdown with eye-catching high-resolution graphics * The latest Firefox web browser, version 2.0, which offers inline spell check support in web forms, easy recovery of crashed sessions, built-in phishing detectors, enhanced search engine management with built in OpenSearch support, and better support for previewing and subscribing to web feeds * Proactive security features, preventing many common security vulnerabilities even before they are discovered * Evolution 2.8.0, which brings new features such as vertical message panes On the Server The Ubuntu server edition builds on the functionality from the previous release simplifying common Linux server deployment processes. It also includes a pre-release of the upcoming LTSP-5 (Linux Terminal Server Project). LTSP-5 offers clients a lower TCO (total cost of ownership), simpler installation and easier maintenance than typical IT deployments. With all data stored on the server, administrators have substantially eliminated the cost of updating individual workstations to ensure their security. Enhancements to LTSP-5 include: * Automatic network configuration with DHCP service for servers with two or more network cards attached -- available with the alternate CD installer * Language and session selection from the LTSP login manager -- allowing a user to choose from any of the languages and desktop sessions installed on the server * Support for locally attached devices on thin clients -- allowing users to access cameras, iPods or USB sticks on the thin client * Printing support - enabling printing on a local printer from the thin client * Full support for Etherboot Localization * Automatic setup of non-Latin input methods * Menu item translations included in language packs, for faster integration of new and updated translations provided through Rosetta * Ongoing translation updates from the Rosetta web service: https://launchpad.net/distros/ubuntu/edgy/+translations Installation and Upgrades Under the hood * GCC 4.1 * Glibc 2.4 * Linux 2.6.17 As always, Ubuntu includes the very best of the 100% Free / Libre application software world, and each new release incorporates countless new features and bug fixes from the global development community. More detailed release notes are at http://wiki.ubuntu.com/EdgyReleaseNotes Helping Shape Ubuntu -------------------- If you would like to help shape Ubuntu, take a look at the list of ways you can participate at http://www.ubuntu.com/community/participate/ If you have a question, or if you think you may have found a bug but aren't sure, try asking on the #ubuntu channel on IRC.FreeNode.net, on the Ubuntu Users mailing list, or on the Ubuntu forums: http://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-users http://www.ubuntuforums.org/ More Information ---------------- You can find out more about Ubuntu and about this release on our website: http://www.ubuntu.com/ To sign up for future Ubuntu announcements, please subscribe to Ubuntu's very low volume announcement list at: http://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-announce

Oracle doing a CentOs (rebadging RedHat)
by Ian McDonald 25 Oct '06

25 Oct '06

For those that haven't heard Oracle is rebadging RedHat and providing support. http://weblog.infoworld.com/openresource/archives/2006/10/with_friends_li.h… Things that I see significant are: - Download RedHat EL clone for free - Cheaper support costs - Full compatiablity support - More support for older versions. - Don't have to be a Oracle customer Oracle have contributed a lot of kernel patches recently so I think they are fairly serious about that. I think this may well reduce CentOs installs and some corporates will go with Oracle. 25 Oct '06

Hi all, I am Nigel Nguyen, currently doing a dissertation that study about FOSS movement in New Zealand that focused on SME (small & medium size enterprise - that is business that have less than 19 staffs). I wonder if anyone from the list that run a business or the main decision maker / technology people that could help me to have an insight study in FOSS. Following are information about the study: ----------------- Overview This research is conducted to examine the status of Free and Open Source Software (FOSS) adoption within New Zealand context, particularly the small and medium enterprises community. The report of this research is a compulsory dissertation for my Postgraduate of Electronic Commerce qualification. This research also aim at provide literature ground for later study on FOSS in New Zealand as well as to provide chance for FOSS developers learn about New Zealand business requirements. Who’s responsible? My name is Dung Trung (Nigel) Nguyen who undertake the responsibility for this entire research. You can contact me at 021 78 6769, email me at nigel(a)nigelnguyen.org. This research is supervised by Professor Robert J. McQueen who contact details is available on requested. What will you as a participant have to do and how long will it take? There will be a single interview which should take approximately half hour. The interview will be unstructured (non-directive), unbiased, yet still focus on the recent FOSS implementation in your organization. What will happen to the collected information? The interview responses will be used by the researcher to write a descriptive research report. Only the researcher and the supervisor of the study will be privy to source materials. Afterwards (30 days after final submission of the report), all physical material (notes, recorded tape) will be destroyed and/or erased. Some information, however, will be trimmed to be unidentifiable and transferred to digital format for later reference. No participants will be named in research reports unless explicit consent has been given, and every effort will be made to disguise the identity. Declaration to participant If you take part in the study, you have the right to: - Refuse to answer any particular question, and to withdraw from the study (all collected information will be destroyed immediately in this case) within 21 days from the interview day. - Ask any further questions about the study that occur to you during your participants. - Be given access to a summary of the findings from the study when it is concluded. - The Privacy Act 1993 will be applied in order to protect the interest of participants. -------------- If you are interested, please contact me off the list. Copying from one hard drive to another
by Glenn Ramsey 20 Oct '06

20 Oct '06

I have a hard drive that contains several ext3 partitions an NTFS partition and a FAT32 partition. Is it possible to copy it's contents to another drive of a different type but nominally the same capacity (one drive is 2.5" the other 3.5") using some sort of bitwise copy? If so then what commands do I need to do it? I could do it manually by creating the right partitions on the second drive and copying the files, but I'm wondering if there's a less tedious way? Flashplayer 9 beta out now
by Ian McDonald 19 Oct '06

19 Oct '06

For all of those people who haven't been able to use MySpace and YouTube fully under Linux you might want to check this out: http://blogs.adobe.com/penguin.swf/2006/10/beta_is_live.html I haven't had a play yet but looking forward to trying it. I've also tried gnash which is an open source alternative to flash but unfortunately it doesn't really work very well at all - the sites I tried on it crashed or did nothing. -- Ian McDonald Web: http://wand.net.nz/~iam4 Blog: http://imcdnzl.blogspot.com WAND Network Research Group Department of Computer Science University of Waikato New Zealand

Openfiler
by Chris O'Halloran 19 Oct '06

19 Oct '06

Hello, The company I work for is about >< this close to setting up Openfiler as a file server. The IT guys have setup 1.1 and liked what they saw but were waiting for OpenFiler 2 to be released as stable for use. It is now, so our IT guy downloaded the ISO file, cut it to CD but it won't boot. He came to me and I suggested that we check the md5sum to verify the image. I've looked high and low on the site, googlged around, searched wikis and mailing lists and even hooked on to a few mirror sites to see if I could find a text file with the md5sum. But I am stuck for an answer on this one short of posting to the openfiler discussion list. Any other suggestions? Cheers Chris

Ubuntu 7.04 planning begins
by Ian McDonald 18 Oct '06

18 Oct '06

Folks, Efty Edge is not quite out and Feisty Fawn is getting underway. I like the sound of multimedia enablement and improving the end user experience. From: Mark Shuttleworth <mark-AT-canonical.com> To: ubuntu-devel-announce-AT-lists.ubuntu.com Subject: Planning for Ubuntu 7.04 - the "Feisty Fawn" Date: Wed, 18 Oct 2006 20:48:22 +0100 Salve, Ubuntero's With the final release of Ubuntu 6.10 approaching, and apparently set to be spot on schedule October 26th, we're starting to look beyond it to Ubuntu 7.04, scheduled for release on 19 April 2007. In the next cycle we'll expand on the brand new infrastructure that has landed in Edgy as well as branching out in some exciting new directions. This combination of courage and restlessness is also found in a young deer that sets out to explore a world that is new and exciting - seeing the world through eyes unprejudiced by what has gone before. In that spirit, the release will be be code named "The Feisty Fawn". The main themes for feature development in this release will be improvements to hardware support in the laptop, desktop and high-end server market, and aggressive adoption of emerging desktop technologies. Ubuntu's Feisty release will put the spotlight on multimedia enablement and desktop effects. We expect this to be a very gratifying release for both users and developers. Detailed planning will take place at the developer summit next month in Mountain View, California. Please join us there to help shape the Feisty Fawn! https://wiki.ubuntu.com/UbuntuDeveloperSummitMountainView This will be our sixth release, marking the third anniversary of the project's inception, and will be a return to our standard six-month release schedule following the shortened catch-up cycle used for 6.10. Edgy has been a wild ride, with some remarkable achievements (nothing like re-inventing and substantially improving on init!). Feisty will be a little more focused on features that are very visible to end-users. We welcome new participants in our community - whatever your talent we look forward to working with you! Jono Bacon, our new community lead, will find a way to make sure your contribution is well received. NTP syncing on a local network
by Ian McDonald 18 Oct '06

18 Oct '06

I'm wanting to sync two machines to within 1 msec for my research using ntp. Questions: - is this realistic given how clocks drift? Has anybody done this? - is there a quick way to force them to converge I've had a quick read of the ntp pages and made one of my machines a broadcast server and the other broadcast clients I think but they seem to be taking a while to converge. The man pages say they will fix at 0.5ms/sec but I'm not seeing that. Comments appreciated. NB I don't want my clocks to be deadly accurate to the "real world", just to each other. Suggestion for meeting topic next year
by Denise Bates 15 Oct '06

15 Oct '06

Hello folks, At last months meeting there was a call for suggestions for meeting topics for next year. I would like to propose the following..... As I am in the process of upgrading my stable of computers to Slackware 11.0, I remain puzzled why the BS about Slackware being hard to use has any traction at all. While I expect _any_ discussion of Slackware will probably be branded as a distro war, I think that I could deliver a constructive, informative talk on the _underlying essence_ of text-based installation, package management, and configuration. I would invite the audience to engage in _constructive_ discussion of whether the extra demands made by GUIs on computer resources justifies any ease of installation, package management, and configuration (if any). I would like to have a newbie actually install and configure a computer as part of the presentation. I realise that time will be tight, but I should be able to keep it around the one-hour mark. I suggest the following parameters- ** The installer does not have to be experienced with Linux, but it would be helpful if they were savvy with the computing basics on any operating system. I can give them a printed copy of Slackware Basics and the Slackware Manual. If they get stuck and cannot find the information that they require within one minute, then I could tell them what to do (to keep the presentation moving along). ** The computer to be used should be representative of current modest-specced machines available- no Winmodems, odd-ball, or defective components. ** The installation should be a typical one for a typical home user - no esoteric networking or overly specialised hardware. I would have the installers machine hooked up to the projector, so to show how she/he is progressing. Given these parameters, the newbie should be able to complete the installation/configuration in well under an hour on a reasonably fast machine. I could offer up a few Slackware CDs if any member of the audience also wants to do an install during the presentation. I would welcome the participation of other Slackers as co-presenters. I would also like to attend equivalent presentations by other folk who prefer a substantially different distro (I am particularly curious about Gentoo and LFS). Again, I stress that I am not attempting to start a distro-war. I would be attempting to discuss the underlying philosophy behind the oldest surviving Linux distro and to question whether the purported user-friendliness of GUI-based administrative suites can be justified. regards, ********************************************* Dr Denise J. Memory module information
by Leslie Katz 12 Oct '06

12 Oct '06

I've acquired half a dozen old memory modules. I've been able to identify them from Googling as two 72 pin SIMMS and four 168 pin DIMMS. The DIMMS have PC speeds varying between 66 and 133. It may be that one or more of the modules will fit into a friend's computer, which is itself pretty old. Is there some command I can ask the friend to run which will give us information about the installed memory modules now in her computer--such things as type and PC speed--so that I can find out now whether I should even try to install any of them for her?

Splitting an image file over CR ROMs
by Chris O'Halloran 08 Oct '06

08 Oct '06

Hello, I have a disk image of about 8.4G that I took from a friends computer about 18 months ago. Since then the harddrive has been reformatted and that data lost. I would like to send disk image via CD's to the UK where the disk image can be reassembled. I imagine that might take about 12-13 CD's the file is recognised as a xxxxxx.dat file and I am sure I made it using something like dd if=/dev/hda5 of=/mnt/hdb11/image_name.dat Would people be prepared to offer any hints on how to do that? Cheers

Spam and encrypted emails
by Chris O'Halloran 06 Oct '06

06 Oct '06

http://www.clear.net.nz/terms.html Clear have advised that spam from known spam addresses will be blocked and that other messages will be quaranteened for only 3 days after which the messages will be deleted. As I am not a systems administrator I was wondering what the usual policy for encrypted email (eg GPG) in regard to spam filtering. Is encrypting an email a guarenteed way for people to communicate and avoid messages being deleted by aggressive ISP spam policies. I assume spammers wouldn't bother encrypting email because receiver's couldn't decrypt the emails. Thoughts? Chris

X and projectors Fwd: Ubuntu Weekly News #16
by Ian McDonald 05 Oct '06

05 Oct '06

Great news in this - looks like X will finally get better automatic support for external VGA ports on notebooks.... ---------- Forwarded message ---------- From: Corey Burger <corey.burger(a)ubuntu.com> Date: Oct 5, 2006 8:19 PM Subject: Ubuntu Weekly News #16 To: ubuntu-news(a)lists.ubuntu.com Welcome to the Ubuntu Weekly Newsletter, Issue No. 16 for the week of September, 24 - 30, 2006. You can always find older Ubuntu Weekly Newsletter issues at: https://wiki.ubuntu.com/UbuntuWeeklyNewsletter == Ubuntu 6.10 (Edgy Eft) Beta Release == The beta releases of Kubuntu 6.10 and Ubuntu 6.10 were made this week. Kubuntu features stylish new artwork, improved power management and better accessibility. See: https://wiki.kubuntu.org/EdgyEft/Beta/Kubuntu Ubuntu features Firefox 2 beta and adds Tomboy and F-spot. Artwork hasn't been neglected either. See: https://wiki.ubuntu.com/EdgyEft/Beta == Akademy 2006 == Report by Jonathan Riddell. "Even though I was not able to attend the whole Akademy this year (due to the Kubuntu beta release) the conference, e.V. meeting and BoF sessions I did make it to were exciting and showed great promise for KDE 4. Firstly, thanks to Canonical for making Kubuntu a Gold sponsor of Akademy, it was lovely to have large Kubuntu banners all over the lecture theatres as well as a hacker lab full of Kubuntu machines. KDE 4 has been a long time coming, but with the presentations at the weekend we got to see the multimedia layer Phonon in action and the hardware layer Solid at work. In the KDE 4 build environment we saw a full KDE 4 session being run - a first for many people. There's still plenty of work to be done; the Plasma desktop still has no screenshots and the Telepathy project Decibel is behind schedule, but with the first developers' preview now out and packages available in Kubuntu Edgy, development should now accelarate. We were pleased to have a number of speakers from other communities including Gnome's John Palmieri, who convinced us that it's not just KDE who are happy to have competition, Keith Packard, who wrote some special code to ensure his laptop worked with the university's projector and showed other wonders of hotswap pluggyness that will be coming into X soon, and Jin Yoon, who showed us the open platform used on his Ricoh printers. Looking very promising is KHTML, where the decision on whether to keep the original KHTML or convert to a version of WebKit will likely be taken soon. We also got to see the Qt 4 C# bindings and using Javascript to manage any application's object tree just like a web page DOM. The Akademy Awards were given to the author of Krita, a painting application that now rivals the free and proprietary competition; the poor soul who converted all of KDE from autotools to the CMake build system and the Mandriva coder who has made more KDE 3 to KDE 4 commits than anyone else. Unfortunately, Mark Shuttleworth had to cancel his visit after Canonical One needed repairs, but I managed to hold a successful Kubuntu BoF on my own showing what we had done in Edgy and working out how to get those changes further upstream. The SuSE developers were especially interested in Ubuntu's thinkpad-keys daemon. KDE e.V. is KDE's legal body, and in a day long meeting we went over the usual administrative matters that projects the size of KDE have to. We also chose the location of Akademy 2007 of which I will be one of the organisers, details to be announced soon." == Ubuntu Poster Competition Yields Results == Ubuntuforums.org user HanZo has created a winning entry for a poster design competition that happened at the forums. You can look at the beta image at http://doc.ubuntu.com/~marketing/DIY%20Material/Batch%201,%20Posters/HanZo/… The image will yet be edited a bit (especially the white text), but is a sure winner now. HanZo will be getting 5 free prints. There will be a total of 500 prints, available by email order from Jenda Vancura approximately for production costs. To read more about the competition, please read http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=248546 == Universe Version Freeze == Daniel Holbach tells us that the Universe Freeze is now in effect. This means that no new upstream versions will be synced and no new packages will be admitted entrance to the Universe repository. All is not lost for those certain emergencies though, as you can always file a UVF exception; the process for this is explained [https://wiki.ubuntu.com/MOTU/Processes/UVF here]. For an exception, please make sure you attach all the necessary information and in cases of NEW packages have it reviewed and approved on REVU beforehand! Universe Freeze is in accordance with the Edgy release schedule which can be found [https://wiki.ubuntu.com/EdgyReleaseSchedule here]. == Changes in Edgy == As previously mentioned, universe is moving towards frozen, which will slow down the changes in Edgy somewhat. However, this week was a busy one, as people raced to beat the freeze. === Ubuntu === Sebastian and Daniel of the GNOME uploading team started in on GNOME 2.16.1 at the end of the week, with the bulk being uploaded after Sept 30th. 2.16.1 is the first of 3 bug fix releases on the stable branch of GNOME. Bits of the underlying libraries were also updated as well, with the uploading of gtk 2.10.4 and gtkmm1:2.10.2 by Sebastien and Daniel respectively. Other updated GNOME and GTK-based applications this week included glom 1.1.2, clamtk 2.24 (both uploaded by Daniel Holbach), lat 1.0.7, bluefish 1.0.6, and wifi-radar 1.9.7 (synced from Debian), the new Novell/SUSE menu, slab 0.0.cvs.20060915, synced by Sebastian Bacher, who also uploaded glade-3 3.0.2 and Sebastian Droege uploaded brasero 0.4.4. The world of Telepathy continued at is usual frantic pace this week, with the syncing of telepathy-stream-engine 0.3.6, farsight 0.1.8, gst-plugins-farsight 0.10.2and telepathy-gabble 0.3.7 from Debian and the new telepathy-butterfly 0.1.0 (a connector for MSN), its underlying library pymsn 0.2.1 and telepathy-blue 0.0.1.1~darcs20060926 (a bluetooth/sms connector). Daniel Holbach also uploaded libgalago 0.5.1+svn20060928, telepathy-feed 0.13 and cohoba 0.0.4. Also on the communications front, Daniel Holbach uploaded gossip 0.17 and loudmouth 1.1.4 while asterisk 1.2.12.1 was synced from Debian. A new Firefox plugin for interacting with Launchpad was uploaded this week, firefox-launchpad-plugin 0.1. If you fancy your web browsing slightly more basic, links 2.1pre23, the new version of the Links webbrowser might be more up your alley. === Kubuntu === A few pieces of Kubuntu were also updated, including a new SVN snapshot of kde-systemsettings, 0.0svn20060929, uploaded by Anthony Mercatante. He also uploaded the 0.1 release of knetworkmanager, the KDE frontend to the Network Manager tool. Not yet part of Kubuntu, strigi is a desktop search and indexing tool. This week saw version 0.3.8 of the program, strigi, and the applet, strigiapplet. === Xubuntu === The Xubuntu people, while not as insanely busy as the GNOME uploading team, still manage a respectable output. This weeks haul includes the new xfce4-dict-plugin 0.1.0, uploaded by Gauvain Pocentek and a number of new bits of xffm, the XFCE file manager. They include xffm-applications 4.5.0, xffm-book 4.5.0, xffm-locate 4.5.0 and an underlying library libxffm 4.5.0. === Ichthux === The Ichthux team keeps rolling along, with Raphael Pinson uploading bibletime 1.6 and bibletime-i18n 1.6. He also uploaded ichthux-konqueror-shortcuts 0.1, a new set of Ichthux specific bookmarks. Jordan Mantha also uploaded sword-text-dutsvv 1.3, sword-text-swahili 1.0, sword-text-tagalog 1.1, and sword-text-viet 1.4. === General === The multimedia side of Ubuntu got a great deal of action this week. Daniel Chen uploaded an SVN version of vlc, 0.8.6-svn20060918 as well as mutagen 1.7.1, Sebastien Droege uploaded the new last-exit, 3.0 as well as banshee-official-plugins 0.11.0, William Alexander Grant got working on the new soundcoverter, 0.9.1, and Anthony Mercatante uploaded the new kmplayer 0.9.3. In the MythTV universe, ivtv 0.7.0 and the new myththemes 0.20, the latter uploaded by William Grant, made their way into the archives. A number of new versions of various multimedia tools were also synced from Debian, including mpqc 2.3.1, cdtool 2.1.8, rosegarden 1.2.4, djplay 0.3.0. For those of you who use your Ubuntu machine for a bit of gaming, this week was not all work. bomberclone 0.11.7, lincity-ng 1.0.3, pioneers 0.10.2 and stellarium 0.8.1 were all synced from Debian. If you the scientific pays the bills or floats your fancy, this week brings the syncing of tulip 2.0.5, openbabel 2.0.2, and pcb 20060822 from Debian, William Alexander Grant uploading biosquid 1.9g+cvs20050121, amap-align 2.0, astronomical-almanac 5.6, and treeviewx 0.5.1. In a more medical vein, the gnumed-client 0.2.2a was synced from Debian. Mattias Klose may have the misfortune to have to deal with OpenOffice.org, but he still has time to deal with Zope and this week he did exactly that, uploading zope-cmfplacefulworkflow 1.0.0, zope-pluginregistry 1.1, zope-pas 1.2, zope-plonepas 2.0.1, zope-statusmessages 2.0, and zope-passwordresettool 0.4, all new packages to Debian and Ubuntu. Various pieces of Java software also got updated this week. They include classpath 0.92, an integral part of the free Java stack. This release brings Cairo graphics. You can read more at http://savannah.gnu.org/forum/forum.php?forum_id=4573. Also updated were axis 1.4 and wsdl4j 1.5.2. If you use any of the distribution revision control systems (and you should be), this week brought you some new toys. Users of bzr were given 0.11-rc3 (the final was out as of writing) and if you prefer a graphical frontend, olive 0.11, a Summer of Code project that is going strong after the summer is over, was uploaded as well. bzrtools was also updated to 0.11.0 for the new bzr release. Another popular system is mercurial, which was updated to 0.9.1. And for those that cannot decide, there is a tool for moving between revision control systems. It is called tailor and you get version 0.9.26 as of this week. In other server news, several popular applications were updated. They include egroupware 1.2-105 (Users of groupware should read http://www.jwz.org/doc/groupware.html) and horde3 3.1.3.The 0.5.5 release of the, "light and fast" web server, cherokee found its way into Ubuntu. If you fancy a spot of file sharing, nicotine 1.2.4.1 and mldonkey 2.8.1 are now available. However, if you seek the need to protect your identity while doing it, tor 0.1.1.23 can help you do that. Users of gmail received a gift with the uploading of gmailfs 0.7.2, which allows you to turn your gmail account into another file system. The more prosaic use case of merely checking a gmail account got easier with the release of checkgmail 1.10, which apparently uses Atom feeds for notification. On the server end of the mail system, maildrop 2.0.2 and geximon 0.7.3 are now available. A couple of final things you might be interested include a new version of espeak, the speech synthesizer, 1.15, a new Intel video driver update by Matthew Garrett, 1.6.0, the 2nd release candidate of the 1.0 release of Fluxbox, 0.9.15.1+1.0rc2. Andrew Mitchell uploaded the new krb5-auth-dialog 0.6, which is a dialog for dialog for reauthenticating kerberos tickets. Those of you still stuck with Windows partitions will notice the new ntfs-3g 20060920, which allows full read and write to NTFS drives, all done in userspace. Lastly, Xen has 2.6.17 this week, thanks to the hard work of Chuck Short. xen-source-2.6.17 and xen-restricted-modules-2.6.17 were uploaded right on the last day of the month. == Launchpad News == Welcome to another round of Launchpad updates covering changes included in this week's rollout. This cycle was mainly focused on polishing of existing features, although a number of new features that are under development were brought closer to deployment. === Bug watch enhancements === The new features deployed in this rollout make bug watches a bit more convenient to work with: it is now possible to specify a remote bug tracker for a specific upstream product; when adding new bug watches to distribution bugs, the bugtracker and product name will be prefilled if there is information linking the package to an upstream product. The prefilling also works for upstream products that are officially using Launchpad as a bug tracker. For instance, if you visit the page for the [https://launchpad.net/distros/ubuntu/+source/bzr/+bugs bazaar source package in Ubuntu], notice a bug which is an upstream matter, when marking it as upstream you will notice that the name "bazaar" is already filled in. This small improvement is the first in a number of enhancements planned for upstream bug forwarding. Bug information can now also be synchronized from archived debian bugs; this is the reason why a number of bug watches were updated at once this week (and you may have received some bugmail letting you know!). === CVE reports === The CVE report pages were reformatted and optimized; you can see the general CVE status for Ubuntu at https://launchpad.net/distros/ubuntu/+cve here This listing displays CVEs related to bugs, and their current status. There are now also CVE reports for upstream products -- but no products have CVEs linked to their bugs yet! === Other bug tracking improvements === Handling of binary package names as input in the Package: field was improved in the bug-filing and bug-changing page. Oh, and the 'Untriaged' status was renamed to 'Undecided'; this avoids confusing the concepts of "status triage" and "importance definition". Time to update your bookmarks! === Distribution and package management enhancements === On the distribution management front, this rollout included new formatting for mirror listings; the number of official mirrors for Ubuntu is growing rapidly, and we aim to make this information authoritative for the distribution in the coming weeks: https://launchpad.net/distros/ubuntu/+cdmirrors https://launchpad.net/distros/ubuntu/+archivemirrors This rollout meant deployment of the optimization and code improvement work done in the London sprint. Visible results of this deployment are significantly faster publisher runs (with no-op runs taking negligible time, and the faster 'real' runs taking around 7 minutes). Package builds are now issued to saner sets of architectures, taking into account package-specific architecture restrictions. With respect to upload processing, failed uploads now trigger email notifications to theperson uploading as well; uploads to frozen releases go straight to the pending-approval queue, and superseding backport uploads behave as expected. The Soyuz team also invested long hours into an acceptance testing system which was used to verify the changes done over this period prior to rollout. The test system successfully pointed out regressions and allowed fixes to be verified before deployment. A script for automatically retrying failed builds was implemented, and the queue tool was updated to include pocket information and behave correctly in a few corner cases (read the detailed changelog for the details). === Branches in the Bazaar === One interesting Launchpad feature for upstream products is the tracking of series and releases. Each release represents an actual new tarball release of upstream; a series represents a line of tarball releases that were spawned from the same long-term code branch. Product series can now have Bazaar branches linked to them, this branch ideally containing the coding work done for that specific series. The product can select which series is its main development ("trunk", or "HEAD" in CVS terms) series, containing new feature work being implemented. This allows Launchpad to more closely model the coding work done on an upstream product, which will in turn make it easier to use Bazaar to manage the codebase for a product, and in particular, derivations of that codebase. === Other news === On the translations front, improvements to the automatic package imports were deployed; they reduce the amount of manual nursing required for imports of packages with unusual directory layouts. Language pack generation was optimized, as were the pages that report translation status for languages in specific distribution releases. A number of additional performance improvements are in queue and will be deployed as part of the next rollout. In the ticket tracker, subscriptions of support contacts were modified to be implicit. This means that new support contacts are automatically notified of all existing ticket modifications. The calendaring feature in Launchpad was temporarily disabled; we found it was too buggy to be useful, and have chosen to now focus on features which are priorities for this period. You can install Bip on a server that stays connected, and connect as many clients as you wish while using the same nickname. So, once you setup Bip, you connect to it like you would any ordinary server, while using your IP, port, and a custom password (which bip can generate and encrypt) - Bip will do the rest. For instance, Bip is setup on server 192.168.1.3, using the default Bip port of 7778, and using the username 'Bip', password 'biprocks', and network 'freenode'. I would set my client up to connect to the server and port, and in the "Password" section for the connection on my IRC client, I would enter Bip:biprocks:freenode. Now, I am connected from my localhost to my Bip server, which means I can reboot my localhost and never loose connection to IRC, meaning I won't miss a thing. Novell goes after SCO money
by Ian McDonald 03 Oct '06

MEETING TONIGHT: Codebreakers documentary, end of year windup and free pizza
by Craig Box 25 Sep '06

25 Sep '06

For tonights meeting, we will air BBC World's documentary "The Codebreakers", about free/open source software. We will also present a short recap of the events of Software Freedom Day and a general pre-AGM wrapup, and then we will feed you with the promised Italian flatbreads. A synopsis for the documentary is below. Craig -- The famous digital divide is getting wider. A documentary, The Codebreakers aired on BBC World in May, examines whether free/open source software (FOSS) might be the bridge? FOSS contains 'source code' that can be used, copied, studied, modified and redistributed without restriction. It has been around for over 20 years but most PC owners are not aware that the Internet search engines and many computer applications run on FOSS. "It's not that FOSS has had a bad press, it has had no press because there is no company that 'owns' it," says executive producer Robert Lamb. "But we found that in the computer industry and among the afficionados, it is well known and its virtues well understood." The crew of the independent producers who made the film went to nearly a dozen countries around the world to see how the adoption of FOSS presents opportunities for industry and capacity development, software piracy reduction, and localization and customization for diverse cultural and development needs. Stories from The Codebreakers include computer and Internet access for school children in Africa, reaching the poor in Brazil, tortoise breeding programmes in the Galapagos, connecting villages in Spain, and disaster management in Sri Lanka. The documentary also includes interviews from key figures around the world. Intel, IBM, Sun and Microsoft all seem to agree that FOSS is a welcome presence in computer software. According to Jonathan Murray of Microsoft "The Open Source community stimulates innovation in software, it's something that frankly we feel very good about and it's something that we absolutely see as being a partnership with Microsoft." Updated proprietary drivers
by Ian McDonald 21 Sep '06

21 Sep '06

http://www.phoronix.com/scan.php?page=article&item=551&num=1 https://support.ati.com/ics/support/default.asp?deptID=894&task=knowledge&q… This may be of interest to people. It shows the drivers changing and in some cases improving. It also shows the danger of non-free drivers as well. These drivers support old versions of X and not the latest (so I can't use easily on Debian Unstable). They don't yet support ailgx and of course you are limited to Intel/AMD platforms. The ATI driver drops support for old cards too... Now if Intel would mark their cards faster as they have supported the community by making open source drivers. -- Ian McDonald Web: http://wand.net.nz/~iam4 Blog: http://imcdnzl.blogspot.com WAND Network Research Group Department of Computer Science University of Waikato New Zealand

Ubuntu Local Community Team for New Zealand relaunched
by Craig Box 21 Sep '06

21 Sep '06

Ubuntu New Zealand: Local Community Team ---------------------------------------- Ever since the birth of computers, enthusiasts and fans around the world have collected together in garages, universities and pubs to talk about their interest, learn from each other and help promote their interest. Combine this with the huge popularity of Ubuntu, and you get the Ubuntu Local Community (LoCo) project. A LoCo team is formed to help groups of Ubuntu fans and enthusiasts in a particular region to help advocate, promote, translate, develop and otherwise improve Ubuntu. With the support of Jono Bacon, the Ubuntu Community Manager, and the awesome AustralianTeam, we're launching a New Zealand team for Ubuntu (http://ubuntu-nz.org/) What's involved? ---------------- What would you like to be involved? Activities other teams have engaged in include, but are not limited to: * development & coaching new, interested contributors * regional customisation * translations * advocacy, both virtually and locally * CD & merchandise distribution * IRC support (or just hanging out) There are no set goals for the team yet - it's entirely up to you, the new members, to decide as a group what we should do. Involvement in a LoCo is an easy way to get involved with the global Ubuntu community for non-developers and developers alike. There are people involved from many teams within Ubuntu who can help you gain useful skills for further involvement if you are keen! How can I get involved? ----------------------- Join our mailing list (https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-nz) and our IRC channel (#ubuntu-nz on Freenode - irc://irc.freenode.org:6667/#ubuntu-nz) More details are available from the website: http://ubuntu-nz.org/ Craig (Please pass this message onto your local LUG mailing list if it hasn't been there already!)

Problem with Google Earth Updating

Thanks very much to both Simon and zcat for taking the trouble to reply to my query. I began by trying zcat's solution (merely editing my .bashrc to change Firefox to firefox) and it worked, so it seems as though some PATH designation already supplied the necessary path. Funny about that capitalisation. Like many things, it's so obvious, once someone else has the wit to point it out! Thanks again, Leslie

Software Freedom Day Event
by Lindsay Druett 17 Sep '06

17 Sep '06

Hi There, From what I have seen and heard, the feedback has been awesome. I'm still getting up to speed as to what other LUGs and other groups have done to celebrate Software Freedom Day, but on the whole, from what I have seen looking at the software freedom webpage, I feel very confident to say that ours was world class and we gave awesome open public exposure to open source software. There are photos of the event that took place online, look at http://softwarefreedomday.org/gallery/2006/gallery/2006/oceania/nz/hamilton Thankyou all who got involved in making this event happen. I would like to this opportunity to single out three people out who did an outstandingly stunning job of making this happen... Craig Box, Ian McDonald, and Bruce Kingsbury. Without you guys, this event would not have happened. I would also like to thank Sue Kingsbury, Bruce's wife who supported Bruce, and also Cairo and Destiny, Bruce's daughters, who took turns dressing up as Tux, I think it was mostly Cairo. And, I would also like to thank our supporters... IT Partners (http://www.itpartners.co.nz/) for the loan of the computers WAND Group (http://wand.cs.waikato.ac.nz/) for loan of the TV and other bits and pieces Gateway Christian Centre (http://www.gateway-net.com/) for the loan of the tables and chairs Mystique Costume Hire who made the Tux Penguin Suit especially for us and also Telecom, Centreplace/Downtown Plaza management. Furthermore, I would also like to thank those who helped behind the scenes, those who came on the day, demonstrated open source software and shared their experiences with OSS, and also Ron Dean particularly, but others who have taken photos of the event that has taken place. I would like to take an opportunity to make comment that Open Source Freedom day is about celebrating and putting a day aside to promote free and open source software, however, it is not a day to be seen as a day put aside, or a an event to be held on that day, where there is open season to denigrate vendors, in particular Microsoft, who choose the copyright and charge out a licence fee on a per user and/or per seat basis. Hey, excellent work... Regards, Lindsay Druett, WLUG President.

Problem Installing Democracy Player
by Leslie Katz 16 Sep '06

16 Sep '06

Thanks to both of you for your replies. I should've said in my original post that I had already installed pyrex, without overcoming the error message about Pyrex.Distutils by doing so. I apologise for that omission, which was caused by my being a bit flustered. However, something written by Dominic reminded me of an earlier occasion on which I sought help on this list regarding a python script. The person who kindly helped me then pointed out that installing python2.4, while not uninstalling python2.3, wouldn't, of itself, help me to run a script that said it required python2.4. Python2.3 was being used as the default version on my system, so that I had to force the script to use python2.4. When I did that, the script worked. Since Dominic had told me that the Pyrex scripts should appear in /usr/lib/python2.4/site-packages, I went looking, not there, but in /usr/lib/python2.3/site-packages. Sure enough, that's where they'd been installed. I therefore copied Pyrex/ into /usr/lib/python2.4/site-packages and re-ran run.sh. On that attempt, there was no longer a complaint about the absence of the module Pyrex.Distutils. Instead, I got a different complaint further into the setup script, as follows: Traceback (most recent call last): File "setup.py", line 175, in ? packages = getCommandOutput("pkg-config --list-all") File "setup.py", line 124, in getCommandOutput raise RuntimeError("%s outputted the following error:\n%s" % RuntimeError: pkg-config --list-all outputted the following error: Package dbus-1 was not found in the pkg-config search path. Perhaps you should add the directory containing `dbus-1.pc' to the PKG_CONFIG_PATH environment variable Package 'dbus-1', required by 'NetworkManager', not found I went looking on my system for RPMS with dbus in their name and found I had four of them. One in particular was called dbus-python-0.22-10.FC3.2.i386.rpm and I assumed it was the relevant one. I got a list of all the files in that package. There were six of them: dbus.py; dbus.pyc; dbus.pyo; dbus_bindings.a; dbus_bindings.la; and dbus_bindings.so. I went looking for those six files and found them all in /usr/lib/python2.3/site-packages. I therefore tried the same trick as I'd tried with the Pyrex directory, namely, copying all six files into /usr/lib/python2.4/site-packages, but the trick would only work once. When I re-ran run.sh, I still got the same error message I set out above. (It's those files with "binding" in their names that are causing the trouble, I suspect.) My current question, therefore, is how do I get into /usr/lib/python2.4/site-packages copies of the dbus-python rpm's files that will work? One last thing. Craig raised a wry smile on my face by telling me upgrading was good. I've been wanting to upgrade for ages, but I'm too afraid. What I really need is a step-by-step guide in words of one syllable, explaining to me how to prepare for an upgrade, so that, after upgrading, I'll still have all my current data, my applications that I've separately installed and my settings for my current applications. Without that security blanket, I feel I'm stuck with FC3 indefinitely. Thanks again, Leslie

What is democracy player?
by Ian McDonald 14 Sep '06

14 Sep '06

Saw this today at lwn.net and thought it is timely given SFD. Democracy player 0.9 Last February, the Participatory Culture Foundation announced its existence with the launch of the "Democracy" player, billed as "the world's first comprehensive open source Internet TV system." Many Linux users may be excused for not trying out the program at that time; despite being a GPL-licensed program, Democracy had not been ported to the Linux platform. That situation has now changed; on September 11, Democracy 0.9 was announced. It runs on Linux, and packages for Debian, Fedora Core, Gentoo, and Ubuntu are provided; the source is available for everybody else. Beyond the Linux port, this version promises a polished user interface, a new playlist capability, Flash video support, and more. Your editor clearly had no choice; a tool like this simply must be tried out. Unfortunately, the Democracy experience is still rather spotty at best. It requires the installation of a number of proprietary codecs (which is not particularly surprising, once one thinks about it - the Democracy developers will have no magic solutions there). The system can be sluggish to respond, and your editor never was able to get it to display a video in its own window. It also would not explain why it failed to display anything, so there was little to be done about it. But your editor was able to get far enough to realize one important thing: video display is not really what Democracy is about in the first place. This tool is really a sort of video feed aggregator for free video content; it has all the required features around sorting feeds into categories, collecting votes for interesting videos, using BitTorrent to download videos in a provider-friendly way, and more. There is also significant support for people who want to create their own video feeds. What Democracy and its supporting foundation are trying to do is to get as many people as possible into the business of creating and distributing interesting content. The term "Internet TV" is somewhat off the mark - Democracy will suit couch potatoes just fine, but its real purpose is to get them off their couches and participating in the process. It is trying to create a world where video content is free, universal, and compelling - so it has tools for finding and distributing videos but a distinct lack of DRM support. This is an important goal - television is too important to leave to the TV companies. If the Democracy system can help to bring more free content into existence, it will have done good thing. Some progress in that direction has been made: there are, it is said, some 600 channels of free content available now, and, doubtless, more to come. The current code has real promise; it looks like a capable system for discovering, distributing, and managing interesting video content. If they can get past the remaining troublesome issues, the Democracy hackers will have created a valuable tool indeed.

by Leslie Katz 14 Sep '06

14 Sep '06

I read about Democracy Player on the Web and thought I'd like to try it. My distribution is Fedora Core, but I'm still using v 3 and there was no RPM for that version. I therefore downloaded the tarball and got to the stage at which I was told to run run.sh to see whether I had the necessary dependencies installed. This is what happened when I did that: [root(a)localhost gtk-x11]# ./run.sh Traceback (most recent call last): File "setup.py", line 46, in ? from Pyrex.Distutils import build_ext ImportError: No module named Pyrex.Distutils [root(a)localhost gtk-x11]# I don't understand how to overcome the problem disclosed. I thought that it might be possible for me to get an RPM which was or included Pyrex.Distutils, but I couldn't find such an RPM. I then Googled on Pyrex.Distutils, but, to be blunt, what I read was beyond me. If anyone can explain to me what I should be doing to overcome the problem, I'd be grateful. Leslie

Setting console font size
by Ian McDonald 11 Sep '06

11 Sep '06

Folks, Is there a recommended way to alter this easily without going into great pain in the config file. I'm using debian-unstable and just added a kernel boot parameter vga=ask and hacked /etc/init.d/console-screen.sh by putting an exit in. Is there a nice easy way or is this hack just as good? Software Freedom Day
by Craig Box 11 Sep '06

11 Sep '06

Software Freedom Day is this coming Saturday. Everything is coming together nicely, and I'd like to thank everyone who has helped so far. Again, it's been mostly carried by the committee; we put up a forum and requested comment on it, as well as announcing it at meetings and on the mailing list, but other than a couple of people signing up on the wiki page, not much traction from the general membership. I hope you all make up for this by coming down to see us on the day! On the day ========== We have a stand in Centreplace, which we'll have some computers running demos of OSS. Everyone is encouraged to come down and say hello, and if you don't have an Ubuntu 6.06 CD, we might be able to flick one your way. Extra help ========== We'll need people to assist at set-up and tear-down time, and help with general things during the day. If you're interested, please drop me a line by e-mail. Regards Craig

linux.conf.au 2007 Call For Participation - Five days to go! ============================================================ There are only FIVE DAYS LEFT to submit your proposal for linux.conf.au 2007. Heed our words, procrastinators -- your time has come! Remember to check the 'travel assistance' box if you can't get to Australia under your own steam... If your submission rocks, we'll sort that out for you. :-) http://lca2007.linux.org.au/cfp Important dates =============== * Extended proposal deadline: September 15, 2006 * Notifications by review committee: October 15, 2006 * Conference begins: January 15, 2007 Call for Participation ====================== Presentations are the main part of the conference and consist of a 40 minute talk followed by 10 minutes for questions. Presentations provide an an ideal opportunity to present a new technology or idea to the community. Papers related to their presentation can be submitted by academics who are accepted to give a presentation in the conference. These papers are peer-reviewed by an international papers committee. Papers will be included in the conference proceedings. The papers track allows students, researchers and academics to have their work formally recognised. Tutorials are half-day presentations which provide an opportunity to provide an in-depth and hands on look at a specific technology. These tutorials should be interactive, and the level of expertise required by participants should be clear so people can choose tutorials appropriate to their level. Mini-confs form an important part of linux.conf.au by providing an opportunity for various groups within the community to come together to share ideas and experiences. Mini-confs can be 1 or 2 day events, and an appropriate room will be provided by the linux.conf.au team. There will be other opportunities to participate in linux.conf.au 2007, such as poster sessions, lighting talks and BOFs however organisation of these events will happen immediately before, or at the conference. Topics ====== Most presentations will be of a technical nature, however we encourage presentations covering educational, organisational, community or similar aspects of Open Source software. Promotional presentations, commercial advertisements, sales pitches and their like are not appropriate for this conference. Proposals on the following topics are encouraged: * System administration: - Monitoring - Deployment - Best practices - Linux deployments, practical experiences and war stories * Deep hacking: - Low level design and implementation of large and complex pieces of software such as kernels, database engines, or compilers. * The Craft of Programming - Programming languages - Tools - Project management * Free culture - Open Source in education - Important legal - Advocacy - Community - Government * The user experience - Open media, multi-media - Desktop environment - End-user applications, productivity apps * Cool hacks - Anything which doesn't fall under one of the other topics Review Committee ================ * Angus Lees * Andre Pang * Conrad Parker * Erik de Castro Lopo * Glynn Foster * Mary Gardiner * Martin Pool * Michael Davies * Peter Chubb * Robert Collins * Rusty Russell * Silvia Pfeiffer Proposal Guidelines =================== Proposals for presentations and tutorials should be around 400 words and should detail the subject you want to talk about and include links to any other relevant details, such as a project home page. Remember this proposal needs to convince our programme committee that you should be talking at linux.conf.au 2007. Proposals for miniconfs can be up to 2000 words, and should detail the community involved, the expected number of attendees, proposed activities and detail any support you would like from the organising committee. This proposal needs to convince us that you can organise an interesting, successful miniconf that people are going to want to go to! Papers should be no longer than 14 pages and are reliant upon the related presentation being accepted for linux.conf.au. Papers and proposals should be submitted in an appropriate open format, such as 7-bit ASCII text, HTML, DocBook or LaTeX. Proposal requires pre-registration, providing the following information: * Full name (and preferred handle, if any) * Complete email address * Short biography, in around 1 - 3 paragraphs. The biography should include any previous speaking or organising experience. Proposals and papers and should be submitted through our web form: http://lca2007.linux.org.au/cfp Any featured software in papers must be available under a licence compatible with the Open Source Definition. Any papers that are accompanied by non-disclosure agreement forms will be rejected. All successful papers must be eligible for republication on-line and on distribution media given to conference attendees. linux.conf.au requires publication rights to accepted papers, including the publication of the audio proceedings as well as publication and reproduction rights to any video filmed during the presentations. These rights are non-exclusive. Copyright ownership is retained by the author. Submitting an abstract indicates understanding of and consent to these conditions. In the event that you miss one of the deadlines we reserve the right to revoke any offer to present your paper. We take having the paper for the conference proceedings very seriously and late proposals place an undue burden on our formatting team. All proposals must be complete by the closing date -- that is, the 15th of September is not merely a closing date for abstracts.
