Hi All, If any one who is going to the fixit meeting has a Feisty 64bit install disc it would be helpful as I downloaded a 64 bit version of Feisty .ISO and saved it to my windows ntfs partition then burned it with my Gnomebaker in Dapper only to find the CD had two file errors on it. Maybe dragging it across to Ubuntu corrupted them. Also if I can get a successful install(64 or 32 bit) I would probably need a help with my broadcom wireless card set up. AGM notice, voting and proposed constitutional change
by Ian McDonald 29 Aug '07

29 Aug '07

Folks, Here is another periodic notice to remind you that the AGM will be held on 24th September 2007. For you to vote you must be an official member, although you have 90 days to pay if you do not have the $20 with you at the AGM. The method of voting proposed for the AGM is simple first past the post voting. We will put this to a vote at the AGM so if people feel strongly about STV for example, and the majority agree, then we can have STV. You will be required to have a method of counting the vote though so if you wish for STV you will need an electronic system for this. It is proposed to alter the first paragraph of rule 9 of the charter (which is our constitution) from: The funds of the society shall be held under the control of the officers of the committee. The treasurer and secretary shall have joint required signing rights, and operate the bank accounts, handle investments, and make payments as needed. to: The funds of the society shall be held under the control of the officers of the committee. The officers shall have joint signing rights with a minimum of two signatories required, and operate the bank accounts, handle investments, and make payments as needed. The purpose of this change is so that the president or vice president can also sign cheques (which they cannot do at present). As a safeguard there must be a minimum of two signatories. -- Web1: http://wand.net.nz/~iam4/ Web2: http://www.jandi.co.nz Blog: http://iansblog.jandi.co.nz

It'll suggest what you need and you just tick the box.. If you're using an earlier distro; probably the easiest way is to use the easyubuntu installer - http://easyubuntu.freecontrib.org/ The hard way; System > Preferences > Hardware Information -- Look for an entry that says "AGP bridge" and the card underneath is your video card. If it's an nvidia then you want to install the nvidia-glx package (or nvidia-glx-legacy for older cards) and if it's ATI, I think the package is xorg-driver-fglrx After you do that switch to a text login, sudo dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg, and change the driver (nv to nvidia or ati to fglrx), leave all the other settings as they are. Next time you start you should have accelerated video. Or possibly none at all.. :( Yup Right I did mean the graphics drivers! But he said he is using Mandriva, I haven't used it since Mandrake 10.1 My guess is with Mandriva you will have to identify your graphics card and download the drivers from the manufacturer, Nividia if you are lucky, consensus seems to be that they have the best Linux drivers or ATI, I am not sure about the other chipsets, Intel and co. Maybe you can Google up something worth while. The mandrake site wasn't very helpful unless you joined the club, I never joined so I don't know if it was any better inside. I found the Ubuntu forums _much_ better for help and resources. Regards David -- Some people say that if you run a windows installer cd backwards it commands you to worship the devil... America's Cup Job
by James Spooner 20 Aug '07

20 Aug '07

Hi all, Apologies for the non-technical nature of this post. I'm trying to find someone to take over my role here in Valencia, Spain for the next America's Cup. This position is due to start in October. The job would suit an all-rounder with both hardware and software experience - as well as the ability to get their 'hands dirty' working on buoys and boats and things. Degree / Experience: 2-4 years working in a real job, with a real boss. BSc or similar degree in software or electronics engineering. Here's a tech rundown: * Ruby, VB, C, C++, Bash, SQL, Java * Subversion and Trac * Ubuntu/Debian Linux and Windows 2003 Server * Word and Excel etc. * RS232, RS422, Ethernet and 802.11B/G * Some cabling and soldering work * Documentation (yes - I know) And in general: You will need to be comfortable working on the water and ideally have an interest in sailing and boats. You will most likely learn to aim and maneuver a (real) twin-engined boat. You will need to work well under pressure and be comfortable operating in a production environment with flexible hours. You will like eating Spanish food, taking siestas and being exposed to copious amounts of gorgeous women and some pretty impressive parties! You will get wet, and will probably get a tan. This is a great opportunity to learn Spanish, earn some Euros, get a visa for Spain and use it as a springboard into continental Europe, the UK and Africa. Not to mention being part of a major international event! To get an idea of the location, check out: http://kant.entronomy.com/~james/office.jpg If you like the sound of this, email me a CV off-list. Hello folks, I am about to leave for Australia, and I am concerned that a dear friend in Hamilton will no longer have my support for his computer, on which I have installed Linux. My friend is elderly and lives in the retirement village off Ruakura Road. He is an intelligent man who came to computers rather late in life to build up his confidence, and asks for my help every couple of months. Although I have installed many packages on his machine, only uses email, web-browsing and word-processing. Is there anyone who is prepared to offer to drop around whenever he get stuck? He has been very generous in covering my time. And we're still looking for someone to submit a slashdot review. Let me know if you need a copy. Thanks for your help, Marsee O'Reilly's created a brand new website devoted to the topics in our new book "Beautiful Code" at http://beautifulcode.oreillynet.com. We give you the opportunity to discuss the book's projects and to contribute information about other projects that illustrate coding artistry. The lead programmer for the Beautiful Code website is Michael Feathers, a popular author and expert in Agile Programming who contributed the chapter "Framework for Integrated Test: Beauty through Fragility." In a recent post, Feathers writes: "When I was a younger programmer, I felt guilty about being a neat-freak. It was a selective obsession. There I was, sitting in my office with stacks of papers and books covering every available space, but I was oblivious to it. As long as my code looked great, I could shut out the chaos around me: the towering stacks of dead tree that could've toppled and crushed me if I had sneezed." Feathers continues, "I don't know why I felt bad about being that way, but in retrospect, I think that I felt that I was wasting time caring about neatness in code. It took me a couple of years to figure out that the ergonomics of code matter, and that the time you spend decluttering your code can declutter your thoughts as well." Got a site that fits the spirit of Beautiful Code? Reminder AGM in September
by Ian McDonald 07 Aug '07

07 Aug '07

Folks, According to the constitution we are required to make periodic notices advising of the AGM. So consider this another periodic notice as per our constitution. Our AGM will be at the regular slot in September and we won't have a formal speaker but I'm sure we can discuss ideas if we have time - just like when we had a speaker mishap last time. Remember - we're always keen to get people involved on the committee. I'll be stepping down and so will some (but not all of the others). It's not a huge workload and feel free to discuss it with any existing committee member. We will vote for committee members and my aim is that we will just have a simple first past the post vote now we don't have Craig to run the STV system. Of course, this is open to discussion if anybody wants to discuss it. Ian Current El Presidente -- Web1: http://wand.net.nz/~iam4/ Web2: http://www.jandi.co.nz Blog: http://iansblog.jandi.co.nz

Fwd: CS SEMINAR: Thursday 9 August, 11.00am, I.G.09

This looks interesting. Found out recently Auckland time are leading the firefox project to get things to work offline. ---------- Forwarded message ---------- From: Masood Masoodian <masood(a)cs.waikato.ac.nz> Date: Aug 3, 2007 1:50 PM Subject: CS SEMINAR: Thursday 9 August, 11.00am, I.G.09 To: seminar-announce(a)cs.waikato.ac.nz Title: FOXHOLES: News From The Front Line Of The Browser Wars Speaker: Robert O'Callahan, Mozilla Corporation Date: Thursday, 9 August 2007 Time: 11:00am to 11:50am Room: I.G.09 (NOTE THE CHANGE OF ROOM) Once viewed by some as technologically stagnant, the World Wide Web is being refreshed by renewed competition in Web browsers and the popularization of advanced "AJAX" Web applications. Yet the Web's future is darkened by severe security threats and competition from technologies that seek to replace the Web as we know it. As a contributor to Firefox, I will discuss challenges facing our project: competition from Internet Explorer and other browsers; changes to fundamental assumptions about code-level security vulnerabilities; sustaining and evolving a complex and fragile codebase; and the successes and failures of our tools and processes. Looking forwards, I will discuss our efforts to keep the Web vital, in concert with like-minded browser vendors and standards organizations, by enhancing the Web platform with vector and 3D graphics, offline Web applications, accessibility, richer typography and layout, enhancements to the Javascript language, efforts to improve cross-browser compatibility, and more. I will talk about why everyone should care and what people can do to help. BIO: Robert O'Callahan obtained his PhD from Carnegie Mellon University with the help of Daniel Jackson and Jeannette Wing. After three and half years at IBM Watson working on programming languages and tools by day and Mozilla by night, he volunteered for full-time duty in the browser wars, with the substantial fringe benefit of returning to the most lovely country in the world -- he now runs a Firefox development team based in Auckland, working for the Mozilla Corporation. ---------------------------------------- Dr Masood Masoodian Department of Computer Science The University of Waikato Private Bag 3105, Hamilton, New Zealand Tel: (+64) 7 838 4978 Fax: (+64) 7 858 5095 URL: www.cs.waikato.ac.nz/~masood -- Web1: http://wand.net.nz/~iam4/ Web2: http://www.jandi.co.nz Blog: http://iansblog.jandi.co.nz

Job position: Research Programmer/System Administrator
by Marcel van de Steeg 01 Aug '07

Hi, I'm leaving my current position at the University of Auckland on the 9th of August, if anyone is interested, here is the job-description: http://www.vacancies.auckland.ac.nz/positiondetail.asp?p=5350 and the closing date is 11 August. Please circulate this to anyone who may be interested. It might not be clear from the job-description, but most of the work is Linux and Mac OS X based (command line only, heh :), the amount of Windows administration is almost non-existent. Saturday workshop
by Roderick Aldrdge 27 Jul '07

27 Jul '07

The next workshop is on Saturday 4th August at the IT Training and Education Centre, 17 Devon Road, Frankton from 10am to 4pm. Three (of many) reasons to come to the workshop: 1. Bring somebody to show Linux in action and, if they like it, help them install it - getting off to a flying start. 2. Learn more yourself and/or sort out any problems and become more productive. 3. Help those who come along to learn. Many thanks to Simon, Bruce and Chris for help last time, and to Michael Denigan for the use the use of the facilities at IT Training. This is probably our last chance to use these facilities, so make the most of it while you can.

Webmin and alternatives

Hi there, I'm currently developing a system that will provide some infrastructure for an IT team, specifically along the lines of network management. I've come across Webmin[1] and Ganymeade[2]. Does anyone here have experience with either of these platforms or good alternatives that I could look at? Gotchas encountered etc? Anything considered at this time, although inexpensive/free is definately a plus. Topics for Aug meeting to be announced.. would you consider Funky Penguin presentation on wireless penetration / defense?
by David Young 25 Jul '07

25 Jul '07

Hi WLUGgers :) As you know, I'm a South African Linux geek. My wife and I are coming over in August on a "prospecting" trip, before making our final decision about immigration. I know WLUG is the most active of the NZ LUGs, and I'm really keen to attend the meeting on the 27th. In fact, if you'll have me, I can give an interesting practical presentation on wireless network penetration / defense. (Since according to the website, the topic is yet-to-be-announced). There are other topics I get excited about, if wireless is old news : http://dave.blogs.funkypenguin.co.za/2007/07/10/professor-penguin-i-could-g… So, wlug, will ya have me? :) -- Regards, David Young [image: David Young's Facebook profile]<http://www.facebook.com/p/David_Young/580695413> [image: my blog] <http://feeds.feedburner.com/%7Er/FunkyPenguiNZ/%7E6/1> [image: My status] <skype:funkypenguin?add>

Ubuntu Dapper 6.06 ==> Feisty? 7.10 - CD-ROM Drive not recognised
by elroy 23 Jul '07

23 Jul '07

Hi all. I have an Asus P5WDG2-WS-Pro, and am having trouble trying to install a version of Ubuntu I got from the last WLUG install meet - (This is the Feisty 7.04 Alternative CD I believe - will need to double-check this). Basically it boots from CD fine, but fails to recognise the CD-ROM drive - is it not recognising the IDE controller? I will try to sort out a dmesg from when I boot the 7.04 CD. The strange thing is that Dapper 6.06 Live CD boots from same CD-ROM, and happily installs from the same CD-ROM - any recommendations on things to try? The posters are going to be SR-A3 (bit bigger than A3 - A3 is twice the size of A4 (normal paper)) Images need to be at least 2000px * 2000px but larger is also ok. If you can email them to me or just respond with a link. If you know project leaders and can assist that would be fantastic. I think it is a wonderful idea. I read that Google Earth had updated in June last year including some NZ areas. It seems from some of the comments on site that some of the Wellington images in the update were older than the ones they replaced. How frustrating would it be to submit some neat clear recent shots only to have them "superseded" by some cloudy old photos that Google earth already had licenses for? Regards John ----- Original Message Follows ----- > Hi, > > For years now, I've been using Google Earth on and off. > More and more of New Zealand is now there in good detail, > but to this day Hamilton and most other Waikato towns > remain a sad archaic green and white blur. > > I wrote to the Hamilton City Council IT department over a > year ago, encouraging them to scan/submit aerial photos, > but all I got was a 'we might look into it one of these > days' type of response. > I'm sure that the Waikato Times and/or Hamilton Press > would be very interested in covering the project, and it > could be a good opportunity for WLUG to extol the virtues > of F/OSS here in the Waikato. > > Would be a great look for WLUG, Linux etc if the scanned > photos were post-processed with some 1337 GIMP plugins. > > Thoughts? > > Cheers > David > > > > _______________________________________________ > wlug mailing list | wlug(a)list.waikato.ac.nz > Unsubscribe: > http://list.waikato.ac.nz/mailman/listinfo/wlug

I think if you google for Google Earth updates and read the ensuing comments that they seem not to update very often and when they do the results are variable and sometimes disappointing. Proposal: WLUG and Google Earth
by David McNab 21 Jul '07

21 Jul '07

Hi, For years now, I've been using Google Earth on and off. More and more of New Zealand is now there in good detail, but to this day Hamilton and most other Waikato towns remain a sad archaic green and white blur. I wrote to the Hamilton City Council IT department over a year ago, encouraging them to scan/submit aerial photos, but all I got was a 'we might look into it one of these days' type of response. This gave me the thought that there might be an opportunity for WLUG to boost its profile. What it would require is a small group of volunteers to learn about the Google Earth submission protocols, to source out the best available aerial photos, scan them and submit them into Google Earth. Perhaps some professional digital graphics companies/people might be willing to donate some time and effort in exchange for a share of the publicity. Some of those folks would have pro scanning gear way way beyond the average humble A4 flatbed. I'm sure that the Waikato Times and/or Hamilton Press would be very interested in covering the project, and it could be a good opportunity for WLUG to extol the virtues of F/OSS here in the Waikato. Would be a great look for WLUG, Linux etc if the scanned photos were post-processed with some 1337 GIMP plugins. Thoughts? Cheers David

We need the right person to join our small programming team based at our premises in Hamilton. Marathon-Photos.com photographs marathons and endurance events around the world, with the images displayed on the internet for viewing and ordering. recovering data off failing/failed hard drive
by Chris O'Halloran 17 Jul '07

17 Jul '07

Hello people, As the linux fan at work I was offered an old machine to set up a wiki at work. I migrated much of the data off a private wiki I kept on my home machine and set up the wiki using Kubutu Server 6.06 LTS. The wiki is phpwiki and uses mysql as the backend. The machine stopped serving webpages yesterday and although I could ssh into it it was complaining that it couldn't write to the access logs when I stopped and started apache. I elected to reboot the machine but the machine no longer boots linux although it will be boot the Windows partition if you wait long enough. (i suspect Windows is running scandisk.exe 'cause it thinks something is wrong) I put in the Kubutu 6.06 server CD and tried to start a rescue session. Althought it boots it wouldn't boot of any of the partitions (my knowledge getting a little fuzzy here). At one point I tried starting the partitioner but the machine seemed to lock up so I had to switch the power button. So I put in a Damn Small Linux Live CD (kernel 2.4.26) and it boots ups fine, sets up X windows etc. I can mount /dev/hda8 fine which is my home partition but it won't mount /dev/hda7 which is the root partition and inconveniently containing the data I wish to recover. When I run e2fsck /dev/hda7 it exits early saying its a short session and asks is it a zero length partition? I run fdisk and the stop and start segments, sectors? seem in proportion to the partition size (about 10G). I've tried running fsck.ext2 -b 8913 /dev/hda7 but it still complains that it can't find the superblock and makes ominous suggestions that the partition might be corrupt. I have been running badblocks /dev/hda7 for the past hour or so but nothing salient seems to be reported. My plan was to image the partition and mount on another machine to recover the database but this now seems hopeful. Do the sys admin guru's out there have any suggestions? Thanks Chris

Whilst I do have a gui manager for networking it is not like the one shown in the link. One clicks on the name of the network shown and a drop down with any other access is shown. I _think_ the the key is WEP simply one word <ultra> I will I try the command line. should that fail I guess I need to install network manager, hopefully I can get it through apt. This is the output from: iwlist eth1 scanning ESSID "martin" Protocol IEEE 802.11g Frequency: 2.412ghz Channel 1 Quality: 0/100 Signal level 64dbm: 256dbm Encryption key: on Bit rates 1-2-5.5-11.6-9-12-24-36-48-54MBS Extra:bin_int=100 Extra:ati=0 I have never had a problem with open access points so I wonder if I am incorrectly entering the key somehow ( does it need to be entered twice with a space/dash?) The key is a simple 5 letter dictionary word so I assume that it would be ascii though I did try the hexadecimal entry also. I can ping the router under windows with round trips under 2ms When i ping with ubuntu I get network unreachable. Thanks for responses, I have a broadcom wireless in my note book and no wifi radar. Windows is reporting a constantly fluctuating signal on its gui giving a signal of 2 to three bars (5 is max) Ubuntu wireless network "sees" the connection but will not connect once I enter the wep key. My guess is that the signal is too week to connect with as I usually can connect with out any effort. Thanks very much to David and Bruce for your replies. @ David: the modem is a Belkin ADSL2+ modem, which I believe is available only here in Australia. It was supplied to me by my ISP. (I took the path of least resistance on that!) @ Bruce: your reply prompted me to look at the fine manual that came with the modem. There's a section in it called "Setting MAC address filtering" which seems to allow me to do the sort of thing you're suggesting. I really should've looked there first, shouldn't I? How to mount a usb drive at boot time
by Glenn Ramsey 03 Jul '07

03 Jul '07

Hi, I have a usb drive that I would like to use for automatic backup and I'd like for it to be mounted at boot time and treated the same as any other disk. I found these instructions which describe exactly what I want to do... <http://linux.wordpress.com/2006/10/07/suse-automatically-mount-usb-hard-dri…> However I'm running Ubuntu feisty and those instructions don't work properly for this distro. During boot the fsck stage fails because the disk isn't mounted yet (Well I think that's what's happening). After boot up manually running 'mount -a' mounts the drive as expected. Anyone know how to get this working? Or is there an alternative approach? I figure I could just run mount -a in rc.local but then how would the fsck get to run every nth mount? Changing addresses
by Leslie Katz 02 Jul '07

02 Jul '07

My modem is plugged into an Ethernet switch. The Ethernet card in my computer and my printer are each plugged into the switch. My modem has the address internally of 10.1.1. My printer's usually 10.1.1.2. My computer's usually 10.1.1.3. However, recently on a number of occasions, I've discovered my printer or computer has a different address. No doubt, some command will tell me the current addresses of things plugged into the switch, but I don't know which. Could someone enlighten me as to the command? Also, is there some way to force my printer and computer to keep their usual addresses permanently? Otherwise, when I discover that my printer isn't working or that my firewall's blocking connections, I have to change the relevant settings temporarily to match the different numbers, which is annoying. Configuring monitor in Ubuntu
by Ian McDonald 28 Jun '07

28 Jun '07

Folks, I'm working on Ubuntu 7.10 (beta) on a PC which I must say is quite nice and Dad is also working on Ubuntu 7.04 boxes and we have an issue with resolution. Our PCs seem to not pick up the capabilites of the monitor and lock down the modes you can choose from Preferences, Screen Resolution I can't find a graphical box to alter the monitor characteristics. I can either edit the /etc/X11/xorg.conf or type "sudo dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg" and it fixes the issue. Is there a nice graphical way I can do this so that I can tell others as this is not the easiest to tell other users... I'm a South African Linux Geek, and I run a small consulting company over here called "Funky Penguin". For the past three years, we've been assisting clients with Open Source systems, developments, and customizations. I've subscribed to this list because my wife and I are giving very serious consideration to immigrating to your fine country. (South Africa is not the safest place to start a family). I'd want to ply my trade as a consultant over there, while continuing to manage my fledgling company back in SA. I enjoy working with technology in general, specifically open-source software, and if you asked me to define my specialties, I'd have to say : mySQL / PHP development and customization ( http://www.google.co.nz/search?q=wp-phplist - although it's not my favorite pastime), network and open source systems setup, wireless hotspots (working on a pay-for-play model to resell your connection to your neighbors / customers), and (really esoteric) jabber logging ( http://www.google.co.nz/search?q=jabber+bandersnatch) The wife and I are coming over there for a month in August, to get a "feel" for the place, before making our final, life-altering decision. I'm hoping to make friends and contacts on this list, and to establish some "street cred". So, I'll try to make intelligent posts and comments where appropriate, will welcome questions, contact via Facebook, Skype, etc., and hope to meet some of you in August! :) -- Regards, David Young [image: David Young's Facebook profile]<http://www.facebook.com/p/David_Young/580695413> [image: My status] <skype:funkypenguin?add>

Peer Review Starts for Software Patent Applications

<quote> The U.S. Patent and Trademark Office begins an unprecedented experiment this week that will allow you (yes, you!) to review software patent applications. The USPTO is hoping the wider community of programmers and engineers will do a better job of spotting bad claims and thereby prevent innovation-killing legal tussles. </quote> http://spectrum.ieee.org/jun07/5275 http://www.peertopatent.org/

Please excuse the cross-post but there is a position at FX Networks for a Linux Administrator. -------- Forwarded Message -------- From: Jamie Baddeley <wellylug(a)vpc.co.nz> Reply-To: wellylug(a)vpc.co.nz, Wellington Linux Users Group <wellylug(a)lists.wellylug.org.nz> To: Wellington Linux Users Group <wellylug(a)lists.wellylug.org.nz> Subject: [wellylug] Position Available: FX Networks Date: Tue, 19 Jun 2007 22:47:39 +1200 Forgive the intrusion, but I thought I'd mention something that may interest some WellyLuggers. FX Networks (http://www.fx.net.nz/) has a position available for a junior/medium level systems administrator with some experience in looking after Debian Linux systems. Ideally they should have experience with Asterisk (or an enthusiasm for it), and a willingness to learn Cisco Networking technology. This person should not be afraid of customer interaction and working in a small tight team that has fun. If anyone is interested then feel free to contact me off list or call FX. Thanks Jamie

June 24th will see the NZOSS elect a new President. The AGM will be held across the country with venues in Auckland, Wellington and Christchurch connected by Internet Conference. Vik Olliver and Don Christie will be running for President. Both candidates are very well respected in the open source community. The AGM will be an opportunity not only to do the "business" of the NZOSS in terms of elections, but also to catch up with each other and get some energy going in each Region. Ideally we will finish the society business in about an hour. The Presidents Address will be delivered via YouTube - I will record it before the event and publish the link on the list. For those unable to make the event we will be on IRC. We will use IRC as the primary means of communication. We will also try to get more real time communication going, either voice or full video. 08 Jun '07

A reminder, the WLUG Fixit Meeting is today. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- After much procrastination we've finally restarted the http://www.wlug.org.nz/SaturdayWorkshops. The first one for 2007 is on June 9th. Future workshops will be on the first Saturday of the month. Time: 10am to 2pm Location: IT Training building, 17 Devon Road. (http://zoomin.co.nz/?search/address/17+devon+road%2C+hamilton) The room has plenty of benches, power and network sockets. We'll also provide tea and coffee. If you have any questions, feel free to contact Rod (http://www.wlug.org.nz/RodAldridge) or Bruce (http://zcat.geek.nz/) Requests For Help: ElroyLiddington - would like assistance with Ubuntu 6.06 LTS? KDE setup - currently using Gnome, but prefer KDE WM, but having issues getting task-bar-applets-installed/PPP-working. Not important, but maybe: help with lmsensors/SMARTD setup if available :-) and setting up pppd bandwidth throttling for say http/ftp downloads etc, so when requesting a webpage, downloads get throttled until request has completed?

Help setting up DHCP and RAID in Ubuntu
by Eric Light 29 May '07

29 May '07

Hi everyone, Is there anyone in the Hamilton area who could spare some time (in person) to help a linux newbie? I've been dabbling with a new computer, and I've done everything I needed to do with the exception of RAID-1 and DHCP. I have a feeling I've also stuffed up something, as I've got an external eSATA hard drive (for backups) which doesn't auto-mount, and I can't figure it out. I'm sorry to say I'm a bit tight on the old wallet this week, but anyone who lends a hand will get a nice cup of coffee, and their choice of a couple classic linux books I've got hanging around. I live in the Hillcrest area, but I'm quite happy to meet elsewhere if desired. More details available on request. :-) Thanks in advance! - Eric

NZOSS AGM
by Peter Harrison 29 May '07

29 May '07

June 24th will see the NZOSS elect a new President. The AGM will be held across the country with venues in Auckland, Wellington and Christchurch connected by Internet Conference. Vik Olliver and Don Christie will be running for President. Both candidates are very well respected in the open source community. The new President will be challenged by several projects such as ongoing patent opposition against Microsoft's XML Word Processing patent, lobbying against DRM restrictions in law, supporting open source in education and promoting open source events. Don Christie: Don is a founder and director Catalyst IT Limited, a New Zealand based software development company. Catalyst specialise in providing open source software solutions to the education sector, corporates and government agencies in New Zealand and round the world. He has lived and worked in three continents. He has specific interest in technology that empowers and enables grass roots organisations and business to extend their potential. He is also a member of the NZ Institute of International Affairs. Don says that "I would not be putting myself forward for this role if I were not convinced that the NZOSS has already achieved a great deal and has an important role to play in the future. FOSS is much more than a philosophy, it runs the heart of communications and IT round the world. It is used by start-ups round the world who attract billions of dollars of investment every year. It is core to the livelihood of hundreds of thousands of developers and companies that employ them. The philosophy of FOSS has now extended to many walks of life, from publishing to architecture through the use of Creative Commons type licences. This is in many sense purely an issue of history repeating itself as we once again discover the value of community over the individual." He is keen to start attracting businesses to become members of the NZOSS and expand its reach beyond the current membership base. He believes that many businesses do not realise just how much they need to protect the systems they have built or run from predatory attacks. He is keen to carry that message through to this audience. He comments that "I see no reason why most of the IT businesses in New Zealand would not have an affiliation with the NZOSS at one level or another." Vik Olliver: Vik Olliver is a software developer from Waitakere. Born in the UK, he emigrated to NZ in 1994 with his wife Suz and daughters Kate & Tamara. He has worked on projects ranging from implantable heart monitors to launching satellites, and from urban self-sufficiency to hydroponics in moonrock. He has also done enough journalism to get the shakes if he doesn't write articles occasionally. Vik is a staunch supporter of Open Source, Open Standards and an Open society. He has persuaded companies and retailers to pick up the Open Source banner, represented New Zealand as a regional delegate at LinuxConf Australia, and took part in the reviewing of OSS guidelines for the NZ government. He looks forward to embracing the innovation that Open Source is bringing to us at an ever accelerating rate.

Software Freedom Day
by Ian McDonald 24 May '07

24 May '07

Folks, The committee have been looking at what we can do to promote this event this year and have come up with some ideas but we need your input. What we are looking at is a public display at the library and also an event like we had in Centreplace last year, followed by an installfest. We have people on the committe who are willing to organise the library display and the installfest. However if we are to do an event like Centreplace we need some volunteers who are prepared to lead it. Committee members are prepared to help but want somebody to lead it. If this feels like you, then contact us. Please note that this is a reasonable amount of work to carry out as Craig Box will attest to from last year. Microsoft counts number of opensource patent issues
by Ian McDonald 14 May '07

14 May '07

Microsoft is starting to rattle some sabres: An excerpt from http://money.cnn.com/magazines/fortune/fortune_archive/2007/05/28/100033867/ (Found at lwn.net) But he does break down the total number allegedly violated - 235 - into categories. He says that the Linux kernel - the deepest layer of the free operating system, which interacts most directly with the computer hardware - violates 42 Microsoft patents. The Linux graphical user interfaces - essentially, the way design elements like menus and toolbars are set up - run afoul of another 65, he claims. The Open Office suite of programs, which is analogous to Microsoft Office, infringes 45 more. E-mail programs infringe 15, while other assorted FOSS programs allegedly transgress 68. Looks like Microsoft is starting to change strategy.... -- Web: http://wand.net.nz/~iam4/ Blog: http://iansblog.jandi.co.nz WAND Network Research Group

Ubuntu moving into handheld/embedded market
by Ian McDonald 06 May '07

06 May '07

This could be interesting as it's a largely untapped marked so players like Microsoft may not be dominant from the start. At present Nokia use Linux and there is some Windows XP on UMPC. https://lists.ubuntu.com/archives/ubuntu-devel-announce/2007-May/000289.html At the heart of the Ubuntu project lies a belief that open source software and technology can play a key role in enabling individuals to achieve their potential. A central goal has been the creation of a world-class, free and open source operating system that we have worked to make accessible across notebooks, desktops, thin clients and servers. Three years on, it is clear that new types of device - small, handheld, graphical tablets which are Internet-enabled are going to change the way we communicate and collaborate. These devices place new demands on open source software and require innovative graphical interfaces, improved power management and better responsiveness. Intel, specifically, have announced a new low-power processor and chipset architecture which will be designed to allow full internet use on these mobile Internet devices. To fulfil the aims of our mission and in response to the technical challenges that these devices pose, we are announcing the Ubuntu Mobile and Embedded project. We will start more detailed planning at the Ubuntu Developer Summit next week in Seville and the first release of this edition will be in October with Ubuntu 7.10. If you are interested in the project, please get involved. We will be working through our normal development processes on Launchpad, the developer mailing lists and IRC. Finally, we are delighted to be working with Intel on this version of Ubuntu. Intel are making significant contributions of technology, people and expertise to the project. We hope that others who are interested in producing an easy-to-use and open source environment for this class of device will join us in making this a success. -- Web: http://wand.net.nz/~iam4/ Blog: http://iansblog.jandi.co.nz WAND Network Research Group

Firefox attack
by jaytee＠clear.net.nz 02 May '07

02 May '07

Hi All. Recently my firefox browser was sneakily attacked by a "systemdoctor/drivecleaner" scam programme that gave a bogus harddrive scan and reported a bogus outcome then locked the browser unless the home site was visited. I fond out that I need to install Adblock into firefox then block adbrite by: *.adbrite.com/* If any one is aware of more of these nasties that can be simply eradicated by Adblock please feal free to share. Given that most of the list are IT experts, this will come as a history lesson I guess. However if it can help one person it will be worthwhile posting. Regards John

Ubuntu's reputation dented?
by Michael McDonald 30 Apr '07

30 Apr '07

I've had a few problems since upgrading from Ubuntu 6.10 to 7.04 I'm still researching what to do about them. It seems I'm not the only one with problems. The ones I've got are: 1. USB flash drive is no longer auto-mounted. System message log notes insertion and removal. 2. System doesn't appear to recognise any media in DVD/CD drive. 3. Swap file has to be mounted manually. The last problem may go back to 6.10 ... it was because of that problem that I decided to upgrade. Seems that the swap file was corrupted a while back. Has anyone else done the upgrade? Did you experience any of the above problems? Michael

laptops that like linux.
by Chris O'Halloran 27 Apr '07

27 Apr '07

Hello, I am interested in buying a laptop. A key requirement would be that it ran Linux (Kubuntu) smoothly and that all the hardware was supported, not neccessarily by *open* source drivers as binary drivers would be okay eg NVIDIA drivers. I would be interested to read comments on what would might be a good model or vendor and advice on hardware options that definitely struggle to work? I realise that there are all sorts of websites for advice but sometimes the models aren't readily avaiable here. If someone has recently bought a laptop that they are really happy with Linux wise, I'd be interested to know. Options I am interested in moderately large screen, nvidia graphics card, intel duo and linux support camera and wifi. Thoughts, comments appreciated. Chris

Firefox
by jaytee＠clear.net.nz 20 Apr '07

20 Apr '07

Hi People, My web browser is doing some odd things. If I am using webmail (clear.net) I can usually read mail and browse the inbox but if I choose to reply or new it goes into "connecting to" mode and stalls. My option seems to be to copy my text to an editor, close, re-open Firefox and sign into my mailbox again then paste and post. A similar thing happens when I am browsing forums, I can read them but if I choose to reply the stall thing happens again and even the copy paste thing is not a success. Google did not help me that much though it is likely I was looking in the wrong place (Firefox stalling) Any help would be appreciated. Regards John Grrr! It has happened with this post:-(

Linux Mobile Internet Devices

No word yet on a price of the Intel/Red Flag device (I've put a giant "wanted to buy" for these specific devices on a big import/export site - shall see what that turns up). I can get Nokia N770 internet tablets at reasonable prices (cheaper than I can buy them in Finland!). I've asked for prices on other models too. GPS unit is also available for those interested. Sadly the n-series tablets are not *strictly* a Linux-device, and may not be as flexible as the MID at the link below... or... maybe they are - they seem to be Linux-based. I don't know how you guys classify these things, and I'm not interested in starting a war about it - or am I. Do these devices have to be pure GNU/Linux, free software, GPL license code etc for you to drool over them or what? Any criteria that needs to be fulfilled for you to just go "I want one" as below? Mathew P.S. Do we get to coin a new phrase for the Linux/Intel combination: Lintel? Anyone want to try and register lintel.com in case it hasn't gone already? > > I like the idea. I like the idea. I was unable to find, however, an actual release date - the articles are all future-tense. Hopefully the OS is available in English. I'm trying to find a vendor (in China or HK) to negotiate an export deal with to Europe as we speak - I've been wanting devices like these for about 18 months to facilitate a tourism project - if the price is right, I'm want many of them! Admittedly, DSE could probably get a better price than we could at the end of the day, but I can hopefully respond to the market faster than they can. I'll let you know what I find out and thus the plausibility of importing some to NZ. Two CUPS questions [re-sent, because I did something wrong with my earlier post]
by Leslie Katz 13 Apr '07

13 Apr '07

I hope to get a Canon PIXMA MP160 all-in-one printing with a computer running Damn Small Linux ("DSL") and CUPS. Right now, I have access to neither the computer nor the printer, but hope to get guidance in advance about the matter. Last weekend, in the absence of access to the computer running DSL and CUPS, I was able to get the MP160 printing with a computer running Fedora Core 3 and CUPS. I did that by installing two RPMs supplied by Canon, which it said were for Fedora Core 6. Due to RAM and storage constraints, I can't hope (by, for example, using alien) to install the entire contents of those two RPM packages on the computer running DSL. However, among the installed files from the two RPMs were: (1) a .ppd file; (2) a filter file; and (3) a backend file. The .ppd file included a line referring to the filter file. I have two questions: 1. Is there any chance that by copying all three of the files I've mentioned to the appropriate directories on the computer running DSL, I could get the MP160 to print with that computer? 2. If not, could I edit the .ppd file to remove the reference to the filter file and copy only the edited .ppd file to the computer running DSL, relying on the fact that default CUPS filter and backend files are already on that computer? Thanks for reading, Leslie -- Visit http://stumblng.tumblr.com An Australian lawyers' tumblelog about things (some legal, some not) you might otherwise have missed

While upgrading my Ubuntu machine i needed to manually remove /usr/lib/python2.4/site-packages/dbus, but i accidently removed /usr/lib/python2.4/site-packages instead. I was safe as i could ask dpkg which packages had files in those directories (with -S) and reinstall them. If someone else needs to do this, the command is: sudo apt-get --reinstall install `dpkg -S /usr/lib/python2.4/site-packages | cut -d: -f1 | sed 's/,//g'` (changing the directory name, of course)

Help for locking myself out of administrating machine
by Ian McDonald 10 Apr '07

10 Apr '07

Somehow my graphical administration on one of my machines has gone screwball. I entered a root password incorrectly under Desktop, Administration, Networking and now it won't come right even after rebooting and using correct password. I'm getting The entered password is invalid as a dialog title and a message box saying Check that you typed it correctly and that you haven't activated the "caps lock" key This occurs after successfully authenticating and even if I try the following at command line: gksu network-admin sudo network-admin kdesu network-admin or su (or sudo -s) followed by network-admin I presume this is some sort of lock that I've put in place by doing it wrongly but how do I fix? Fwd: It's Official: Dell Offering Linux on Select Notebooks, PCs
by Ian McDonald 29 Mar '07

29 Mar '07

Snippet from today's WinInfo update ---------- Forwarded message ---------- From: WinInfo UPDATE <WinInfo_UPDATE(a)list.windowsitpro.com> Date: 29 Mar 2007 11:50:38 PDT Subject: It's Official: Dell Offering Linux on Select Notebooks, PCs To: ian.mcdonald(a)jandi.co.nz - It's Official: Dell Offering Linux on Select Notebooks, PCs ==== IN THE NEWS ================================ -It's Official: Dell Offering Linux on Select Notebooks, PCs -Microsoft Updates Zune, Cites Ongoing Successes -Apple Bows to Industry Pressure, Offers Album Discounts by Paul Thurrott, thurrott(a)windowsitpro.com Dell has responded to overwhelming feedback from its IdeaStorm customer feedback site this week by announcing that it will soon begin offering the open-source OS Linux on select Dell desktop and notebook PCs. The announcement comes about a month and a half after IdeaStorm was first brought online. The availability of Linux was, overwhelmingly, the number one customer request. "We have heard you and appreciate the direct feedback," Dell wrote to customers in a posting to its corporate blog. "We will expand our Linux support beyond our existing servers and Precision workstation line. Our first step in this effort is offering Linux pre-installed on select desktop and notebook systems. We will provide an update in the coming weeks that includes detailed information on which systems we will offer, our testing and certification efforts, and the Linux distribution(s) that will be available. The countdown begins today." Dell's sudden fixation on customer feedback comes in the wake of a disappointing year in which it fell from its perch atop the PC industry, ousted its CEO, and saw founder Michael Dell retake the reins of the company. Mr. Dell feels that better connecting with its customers--and delivering exactly what they want--is the key to future growth. That said, it's unclear how offering a free OS--one that Dell will need to support--will dramatically improve the bottom line. In the battle for the desktop, Windows remains the overwhelming champion, with more than 95 percent of the market. Apple's Mac OS X accounts for about 2.5 percent of the worldwide OS market.

How to recover from failed edgy install
by Glenn Ramsey 22 Mar '07

22 Mar '07

Hi, My attempt to upgrade my laptop from Dapper to Edgy has failed. After booting it goes into single user mode and I assume that upstart is not installed correctly. Does anyone know how to recover from this? I searched but so far haven't found anything helpful. Glenn -- Glenn Ramsey <glenn(a)componic.co.nz> 07 8627077 http://www.componic.co.nz

Debian stable vs Debian testing.
by Oliver Jones 18 Mar '07

18 Mar '07

Hi Folks. I've got a box running Debian stable (sarge) but in order to get some features I've installed some packages from testing. This causes a few problems when I try and keep my box updated. Which makes me worry. Should I just give stable the boot and switch to running entirely from testing? Anyone here doing that? Any problems? Regards

Changing ext3 file system to ext2
by Leslie Katz 18 Mar '07

18 Mar '07

Hello again, Ian. Well, gparted worked as advertised on ext3 file systems. Thanks so much again for drawing it to my attention. I have some questions arising, though, if I may. Here's what the output of fdisk now shows for the relevant drive. Device Boot Start End Blocks Id System /dev/hdb1 * 1 13 104391 83 Linux /dev/hdb2 14 1318 10482412+ 83 Linux /dev/hdb3 1319 1449 1052257+ 82 Linux swap /dev/hdb4 1450 4865 27439020 5 Extended /dev/hdb5 1450 1462 104391 83 Linux /dev/hdb6 1463 4865 27334566 83 Linux hdb1 and hdb2 are respectively my original /boot and / partitions for FC3, with hdb2 now shrunk from 35 GB to 10GB. hdb3 is my new swap partition--it's functioning and I've added it my fstab file. However, I'm not quite sure what to do now about hdb5 and hdb6. I want them respectively to serve the same function for FC6 as hdb1 and hdb2 now do for FC3. In my fstab file, the entries for hdb2 and hdb1 respectively are as follows: LABEL=/ / ext3 defaults 1 1 LABEL=/boot /boot ext3 defaults 1 2 Do I make hdb5 bootable, label hdb5 and hdb6 respectively /bootfc6 and /fc6 and then mount them on mountpoints corresponding to their labels? Or (as often happens with Linux) am I missing some fundamental point about this? Thanks again, Leslie

After posting, I reversed in Knoppix all that I'd done to my hdb2 and my fstab and could boot up successfully in Fedora again. Given your alerting me to gparted, I've downloaded it and will now try my resizing with it instead. Thanks again, Leslie

Changing ext3 file system to ext2
by Leslie Katz 17 Mar '07

17 Mar '07

There's a good expression used in an American judicial decision: the judge said he wouldn't "let the sideshow take over the whole circus". I think that's what I've done. I use Fedora. I want to shrink my / partition (/dev/hdb2) in order to create an extra partition on which to install a later version of Fedora. (I'm not prepared to erase my existing version until I've satisfied myself that all is well with the new one.) A book I've often used to help me said that one should use QTParted to shrink the partition. I booted up with a Knoppix live cd and tried to use the provided QTParted, but it wouldn't let me resize the partition. I went Googling and found that I couldn't use QTParted to resize a partition with an ext3 file system on it. I first had to change the file system to ext2, then resize, then change back to ext3 (if I wanted). I found on the Web a Red Hat (v 9) page called "Reverting to an ext2 File System": http://www.fis.unipr.it/pub/linux/redhat/9++/en/doc/RH-DOCS/rhl-cg-en-9/s1-… Its instructions, in summary, were, with /dev/hdb2 unmounted: #/sbin/tune2fs -O ^has_journal /dev/hdb2 #/sbin/e2fsck -y /dev/hdb2 # <mount /dev/hdb2> " Next, remove the .journal file at the root level of the partition by changing to the directory where it is mounted and typing: rm -f .journal". "If you permanently change the partition to ext2, remember to update the /etc/fstab file." In Knoppix, I followed the first two instructions and then ran QTParted. It showed /dev/hdb2 as having an ext2 file system. I also edited the /etc/fstab file on /dev/hdb2 to change the file system shown for /dev/hdb2 to ext2. I didn't remove the .journal file, simply because I couldn't find one, but I thought that maybe it had been automatically erased when I changed the file system to ext2. I then booted up in Fedora and got during booting up: "mounting root filesystem ext3: no journal on filesystem on hdb2 mount: error 22 mounting ext3 mount: error 2 mounting none switching to new root switchroot: mount failed: 22 umount /initrd/dev failed 2" (There was more, but that's all I copied down.) Can anyone tell me what more I should be doing than's on the Red Hat page? Thanks for reading, Leslie
