Nominations for officers of the committee
by James Pluck 12 Oct '08

12 Oct '08

Hi All, Just a reminder request for nominations for next years committee. At present, I am the only person nominated for any role. I'm not sure that a committee of 1 is a very good idea. So have a think about it and get your names in for the officers and general positions on the committee to run the WLUG next year. A lot of people have said that they know where the WLUG should be headed and how it should be run. it's time to put your money down and step up! Upcoming WLUG committee meeting (1 week today)
by Meeting Reminder bot 05 Oct '08

05 Oct '08

As per the WLUG charter, please note that there is a WLUG executive committee meeting one week from today. If you wish to get an item on the agenda for this meeting, please email it to secretary(a)wlug.org.nz. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Describe http://www.wlug.org.nz/CommitteeMeetingTopics.2008-10-13 here. Agenda Discussion of Software Freedom Day Success: *A manageable turnout *USB stick draw worked well. *Music applications/ setups are popular. *Presentations format worked well. *The posters and advertising had created manageable expectations. *A public figure is a draw card (Nandoor Tanzcos) *Experienced presenters held audience attention. *The fliers and promotional materials were excellent. *News paper recognition. *EEE PC is popular. Things we learned *A resources page/board for those interested in future information. *The value of having someone welcoming people to the event. *The value of having the internet available. *Perhaps a notice board/ white board for any rescheduling issues. *Perhaps some configuration work could have been done earlier *Wireless AND wired access is useful to those wishing to hook up laptops. Number one trouble shooting with laptops is wireless issues so wired access is a prerequisite for troubleshooting some issues. *Have a session demonstrating the OpenDisc (on a windows computer), highlighting the programs on it. Thing we could do better or ideas for discussion *Maybe a local ubuntu respository for any install work to avoid hammering the internet connection. (might also save embarrassment when doing how to install) *Windows machines demonstrating the true cross platform nature of many free software projects *Demonstrating MythTV showing maturity of application. Preparation for AGM

E-Waste Day...

Is anyone here from the central Hamilton West area? I /did/ have someone to take a small load (two monitors, a few PSUs and a few other small bits and pieces), but he won't be in Hamilton tomorrow. This is probably rather late notice, but then I didn't have much notice of changes of plan. If I can't get rid of any of this stuff now, where can I dispose of it later? I've no idea. Sandy

It would be pretty tragic if someone dropped off a 'poly' or similar rare, historic machine and nobody saved it. Anyhow, volunteer information at http://zcat.geek.nz/files/volunteers%208.30%20packers.doc for anybody who plans to help out on the day. Hopefully the list allows attachments. Also I think I've got too much here to fit in my car, let me know if you have some free space and can pass by this way on Sunday morning.

eday 5th October
by Roderick Aldridge 28 Sep '08

We invite you to attend eDay in Hamilton on 5th October 2008. Your support of the event and attendance would be greatly appreciated. eDay is a drive-through recycling event which gives New Zealand households and community organisations the opportunity to recycle old computers and mobile phones in an environmentally sustainable way. eDay will be held in 30 locations across the country, from Invercargill to Kaitaia, on the 4^th and 5^th of October. // eDay in Hamilton will take place on Sunday 5^th October* *2008 from 9am -- 3pm. You are most welcome to attend at any time during the day as a volunteer. The eDay venue details are as follows: Mainfreight Depot Foreman Rd (off Avalon Dr) Hamilton** * * *Who is attending eDay in Hamilton* § eDay sponsors and stakeholders such as Hamilton City Council Voulnteers, Velocity Networks, Easy Technology and Waikato 2020 Communications Trust § Local media will be invited § Local community disposing of their e-waste; we are expecting up to 800 cars and households to drop-off e-waste. eDay was created by the Computer Access New Zealand Trust (CANZ) in response to a growing concern about the volume of electronic waste (e-waste), especially computers and computer monitors, being dumped in New Zealand landfills. e-waste can seriously harm the environment, wildlife and human health when dumped in landfills. Landfilling e-waste is not a solution because it stores potentially toxic waste rather than allowing for recovery and reuse of valuable materials. eDay aims to increase community awareness of the hazardous nature of electronic equipment, making it clear that disposal in landfills is not a sustainable option. It also provides a mechanism and convenient drop-off points for households and community organisations to dispose of computer equipment and mobile phones in an environmentally sustainable manner. I hope you can join us on 5^th of October. / / / / Please RSVP Regards, Vanessa Mohi-Goodchild eDay Project Manager Waikato 2020 Communications Trust Ph 07 855 6206 Mob 021 11 00 226 vanessa(a)wainet.org <mailto:vanessa(a)wainet.org> Your best chance in 2008 for you and your friends to get rid of that environmentally hazardous computer stuff without feeling guilty. I am sure they would be delighted if you volunteer to help as well. They need as much help as they can get, especially from those who actually know something about computers. Rod

Fwd: Serious, potentially hardware-damaging e1000e driver issue on Intrepid Alpha 6
by Simon Green 24 Sep '08

24 Sep '08

FYI ---------- Forwarded message ---------- From: Steve Langasek <steve.langasek(a)ubuntu.com> Date: 2008/9/24 Subject: Serious, potentially hardware-damaging e1000e driver issue on Intrepid To: ubuntu-devel-announce(a)lists.ubuntu.com Reports have been coming in that the e1000e ethernet driver for Intel GigE chipsets, as included upstream in Linux 2.6.27, may under certain conditions irreparably damage your ethernet hardware by corrupting the on-board firmware. While we expect alphas to include a fair number of bugs, and rely on your continued support and testing to help resolve these bugs for Ubuntu releases, bugs that damage hardware are quite another matter. As a result of this bug we must recommend that users do *not* use Intrepid alphas, including the LiveCDs, on machines with Intel GigE ethernet. Efforts to safeguard the hardware of affected users are ongoing, though initially this will consist of a workaround in the form of disabling the e1000e driver. Alpha 6 CD images will not be re-issued for this fix, so affected users are advised to either use daily CD images once a resolution is in place, or to wait for the release of the 8.10 beta, due to be released on October 2. Further discussion of this issue can be found on the ubuntu-devel mailing list at <https://lists.ubuntu.com/archives/ubuntu-devel/2008-September/026559.html>, and progress on resolving this issue can be tracked at <https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/263555>. -- Steve Langasek Give me a lever long enough and a Free OS Debian Developer to set it on, and I can move the world. > S-Block, Waikato University, Saturday 20th. It'll be great to have you there. Hey folks. Just thought I'd drop a line to the list as a way of introducing myself and to acknowlege the effort the group obviously put into SFD last weekend. I'm a web developer type who's been working with open-source tech for many years now, some of the Uni folk on the list will know me, I saw a few familiar faces in S-block on Saturday. I was really impressed with what you'd put together. I took a couple of friends along who are also techies, none of us are hard-core Linux desktop users (yet) but two of us have been using *nix back-ends for some time now. Was great to be met on the door (sorry didnt catch the guy's name, my mate Matt used to work with him at Telecom), getting a warm reception at an event like that is so important, especially so I imagine for those who may not be as familiar with all the lingo etc and feeling a bit intimidated by all the Alpha-Geeks. Awesome to see the number of folk there who weren't afraid to be asking questions and finding out about stuff that they could see themselves personally using. Its easy to give people too much info, but from what I saw the speakers and folks at the demos in the reception area had the balance right, not too much, not too condescending. One thing that did strike me was the fact that a lot of the attendees were pretty much already FOSS converts, not too many total noobies, I guess it's tough raising awareness of an event and topic like this, but I wonder if maybe being on the edge of town (ie at the Uni) might not be too far away for some people, would it be better in a central location where casual bypassers could be tempted to pop in and find out whats goin on? All in all, it was very well done, I look FWD to popping along to the next one :-) Dean Stringer

There's a WLUG meeting tonight: ---------------------------------------------------------------------- 7:30pm MS4.G.02 (http://www.waikato.ac.nz/contacts/map?MS4) We'll have covered a huge bunch of software on Software Freedom Day (http://www.wlug.org.nz/SoftwareFreedomDay2008) For the particular benefit of any visitors (or new members) Bryce Utting (http://www.wlug.org.nz/BryceUtting) will review the ones people were most interested in and kick things open for questions. This may bear a passing similarity with the 2pm session from Saturday. Note that next month's meeting is the AGM, so there won't be a presentation. Feedback from SFD will however be used to guide the November presentation.

Big thanks to the WAND group, and especially Jamie Curtis, who sorted out our network connection as well as a couple of switches and an access point at short notice. And a HUGE thanks to everyone who helped out on the day. I was really happy at how it all worked out. Photos and a write-up will be on the SFD wiki pretty soon.

Software Freedom Day
by Bruce Kingsbury 18 Sep '08

18 Sep '08

Hi all, just a quick email about software freedom day (bcc's to random people who may or may not be on the WLUG mailing list, sorry if you got this twice) Bryce is a little worried that at the moment we only have three or four people involved in SFD who really grok Free/OSS software and have a broad knowledge of what's available in various areas. So my first request is that some of the less active members and past members who are able to confidently talk to the public about Free and Open Source software do come along on SFD and give us a hand. RSVP so I know who's coming and don't have to stress about this. Or if you wanted to be more involved in SFD planning, put your hand up now! We've got less than two weeks to get everything sorted and could really use some help. I'm planning to follow up with PBTech about them lending us some nice computers for the day to demo stuff on. Alternatively, would WAND group be able to find some suitable demo machines? It might be easiest if we make use of something that's already on campus. Alternatively, we may end up relying on WLUG members to bring their personal machines. I'd rather avoid that though. Anything else that runs GNU/Linux or embedded Linux? Lindsay is hopefully providing Linksys phones and webcams for the day, and running an Asterisk PABX, hopefully we can link up with other groups during their SFD events. Also if you have a eeepc or similar linux-based 'nettop', bring it along. They're cool and we should let lots of people see how cool they are. And of course, thanks you to those who are already helping. I really hope it all comes together and we have a great SFD! -- This email is for the intended recipient only. If you are not the intended recipient you must burn your computer, while standing on one foot and chanting the entire jabberwocky. ---------- Forwarded Message ---------- Subject: Wanted - Windows PCs for Software Freedom Day Date: Wednesday 17 September 2008 From: Roderick Aldridge <rod-aldridge(a)xnet.co.nz> To: wlug(a)list.waikato.ac.nz Most of the PCs at SFD demonstrating Free Software will be running Linux. It would be good for the visitors, most of whom will be Windows users to be able to see software running on their familiar system. Most will want to try out Windows versions of FOSS on their PCs rather than taking the plunge and installing Linux, so if you can bring a Windows PC it will really contribute to the success of the day. Stuff that'd be useful on Saturday
by Bryce Utting 17 Sep '08

17 Sep '08

Does anyone have: a) a USB steering wheel b) a MIDI keyboard (& a PC that'll talk to it) c) digital video cameras (the higher quality the better, and the more the better come to that; USB-capable ideally) the first'll be good for showing off Torcs, the second for keeping any musicians' attention, the third for recording Nandor's talk. (I'm entirely happy with editing say three roughly-synced video streams on the day while being shoulder-surfed then uploading to YouTube. I tried, work's are all in Sydney.) if there's *any* chance of any of these being there on Saturday, they'd be grand. as for other instruments, I'm thinking of packing a guitar + multi- effects and bringing them in if there's anything to attach them to (and anyone interested). can't commit to my laptop being any use: Audacity will record single tracks to an empty file, but then refuses to even recognise the microphone to record any more. (bizarre, that) (this... also means that the demo Audacity file on the poster -- which, yes, really *is* tracks from a Hammond through a Leslie, a guitar, another guitar, a Hammond through a plain speaker, and a piano, all recorded wild and independently, with a drum solo stolen from the web, all sliced up randomly based on what looked pretty -- is a *truly* hellish din, not helped at all by Audacity repeatedly crashing in horror while trying to make it. I'll try not to play it too much.) butting (mad science isn't just for Christmas, you know)

Preparing for SFD
by Bryce Utting 11 Sep '08

11 Sep '08

Hi all, The publicity's up, the word's out, the gremlins have been beaten senseless with 4x2s and the usual appalling jokes, and now it's time to get ready for the day. A quick recap (since I've lost track of what's happened on which list): * we're putting on a bunch of (short, hourly) presentations at S Block on Saturday the 20th * Nandor Tanzcos is opening * we're hoping to see a whole bunch of people wanting to know more about F/OSS software * preparations are under way to kit the place out with PCs and have them doing hopefully-interesting stuff * there's also the -tiniest- suggestion of a hint that we might be implying that we're there to help answer questions, solve problems, and help out installing stuff. The only remaining worries now are: * nobody comes * EVERYBODY comes It's the latter I'm thinking about. We need to be sure of a core of people who'll be there on the day (it doesn't have to be the whole day), who can offer expertise in areas that people might come with questions about. Know how to painlessly burn CDs? How to walk a Windows user through what's different about Gnome or KDE desktops? How to build documents in OpenOffice? How to safely camp in Tremulous? Then you can help. You don't need to be an expert: if you know enough to be useful, and also know what your limitations are, then that's enough right there to get someone started on the basics and if you hit the wall to pass them on to the next person on the list. So, after a quick chat with Bruce I figure the best way to manage this is to sign up with what we're each willing to help with. This'll mean that, in the event of things getting overwelming, we all know who we can pass thorny questions on to and who can help with triage on queues. And if we keep copies handy, we can discreetly look it up rather than relying on some dim idea that what's-'s-name-'ve-met-twice-three-months- ago might be able to answer the question of how to create a DVD menu. If that's you, adding yourself to the list will help hugely. www.wlug.org.nz/SFD%202008%20Hosts (yeah, I know. but WikiWords don't LIKE acronyms, and it's really a use-once-and-forget page anyway.) And, further to that: we can keep the day flowing, and keep people's interest, if we can be sure of spot presentations during the day. If you're comfortable with getting up front and talking for three minutes about Gimp, Firefox extensions, something weird you've done in Perl, or how Mandrake keeps your cat fed, that'd be great: add that too. These are particularly useful because it means that we can keep the technical lot fed between user-level main presentations, and the users fed in between tech-level main presentations. (and if the day -is- quiet, you might get let off the hook.) sweet as. bryce

SFD poster: need a photo gallery from a member URGENTLY
by butting＠ihug.co.nz 10 Sep '08

10 Sep '08

Hi all, We have the makings (I hope) of some great publicity for SFD. The banner I'm working on will hopefully be ready to print tomorrow, which you might guess is well past the original deadlines (and getting woefully close to the day itself). I've had some excellent stuff come in, but far far too late for our original plan of printing last Friday. I'd like to finish tonight, and there's one last thing I need: an online photo gallery that I can take a shot of. I don't need a screenshot, just a URL, of a gallery that you've created and own the rights to and are happy to have an image of the thumbnails of it released under creative commons with non-attrib. (the thumbnails, not the images themselves.) Something like: Something like http://softwarefreedomday.org/gallery/2007/newzealand/hamilton would be brilliant, only I've already used those images elsewhere. Can anyone help? Would be greatly appreciated. ta, Bryce

gNewSense
by Bruce Kingsbury 06 Sep '08

06 Sep '08

I just installed gNewSense this morning on my laptop, and I am rather plesantly surprised how useable it actually is! I have no inbuilt wireless, of course. Broadcom chipsets require a non-free binar blob so I was expecting that. My USB wireless adapter (ZyDAS WLA-54L WiFi) also doesn't work, which surprised me. It worked OOTB in Ubuntu so I had assumed it was using only Free software, but perhaps not. I'm fairly sure my rt2400 card would work with entirely free software, but I an't seem to find it at the moment. Pity. I've installed swfdec and I'm very happy to find it plays both youtube videos and weebls stuff. At least all the ones I've tried so far, which isn't many.. I'll have to try some flash games next. I've also installed all of the 'Free but patent-threatened' codecs and libdvdcss2. Apart from not having wireless, I can do pretty much everything I was doing before in Ubuntu. This rocks! -- This email is for the intended recipient only. If you are not the intended recipient you must burn your computer, while standing on one foot and chanting the entire jabberwocky. Things are looking grim, and it's causing a truckload of stress here. Deadline is *FRIDAY*, and so far I've not seen -any- final, print-ready artwork. The only contributions so far have been from just two people. Everything else has come off my bat: Impress, Kino (will be replacing with either Jahshaka or Avidemux), Firefox (pending, tho), Inkscape, MuseScore, and Torcs. I *need*: Euler, Wesnoth, Freeciv, Frets on Fire, Glest, Neverball, Flightgear, Gimp, OpenOffice Writer & Calc, and Mono (*especially* Mono). Surely someone's able to contribute? butting

Trash folder location...

I have something stuck in my Trash folder that I can't delete because root owns it. Where is the trash directory stored in Ubuntu 8.04? It was easy when it was just ~/.Trash, but I've no idea where it is now -- I can't get into trash:/// through the command line. Makes me wish there was a 'delete as root/administrator' option in the right-click context menu. Sandy

NZCS Innovators Series Lunch: Don Christie (Hamilton) - 8 Sep 2008
by David Hallett 31 Aug '08

31 Aug '08

The NZ Computer Society (NZCS) is proud to announce a new monthly series of events from August to December 2008 in Auckland, Wellington, Christchurch, Dunedin and Hamilton, bringing some of the true "Innovators of ICT" to a city near you. Register at http://nzcs.org.nz/events/waikato_bop/3202-NZCS_Innovators_Series%3A_Don_Ch…<http://nzcs.org.nz/events/waikato_bop/3202-NZCS_Innovators_Series%3A_Don_Ch…> This month Don Christie will be presenting his talk on "Using Open Source to Build Innovative Solutions". Don Christie will need no introduction to those in the Open Source world, but has an extremely interesting story of innovative success relevant to those in the commercial software space as well. As a founder of what is now New Zealand's largest open source solutions provider, Don is one of the first people to build a truly viable and successful commercial model in New Zealand around open source software. Don's company Catalyst IT, which was voted in NBR Magazine earlier this year as the most exciting company in New Zealand, provides significant solutions to companies such as Telecom, Fairfax, the TAB, plus a host of Government agencies. Catalyst also architected, designed and developed, host and maintain NZ Registry Service's core system, the Shared Registry System (SRS) which maintains the .nz domain space (i.e. handles all .nz internet addresses). In this intriguing presentation, come and hear what inspired Don to take his passion for Open Source to the mainstream and the hurdles he has had to overcome along the way. Don will also discuss his keys to success in turning concepts into reality, an integral step on the path of innovation. The insight presented by Don will be of huge interest to others aspiring to be the best in their field through hard work and true innovation. Don is also the organiser of the NZ Open Source Awards and president of the NZ Open Source Society. Date: 8 September 2008 Time: 12:00 PM - 1:30 PM Venue: The Hub at Wintec, City Campus, Gate 5, Tristram Street, Hamilton REGISTRATION IS ESSENTIAL: http://nzcs.org.nz/events/waikato_bop/3202-NZCS_Innovators_Series%3A_Don_Ch…<http://nzcs.org.nz/events/waikato_bop/3202-NZCS_Innovators_Series%3A_Don_Ch…> This event will sell out in most areas, hence registration is essential. Cloning a hard drive
by Glenn Ramsey 23 Aug '08

23 Aug '08

Hi, I need to install a bigger hard drive in my laptop which dual boots Windows & Linux. I was wondering if anyone knows of any gotchas that I should be aware of? What I'm planning to do is to boot from the GParted liveCD and first use dd to clone the original drive with dd if=/dev/sda of=/dev/sdb and then use gparted to resize the partitions. Seems too simple, have I missed something? Glenn -- Glenn Ramsey <glenn(a)componic.co.nz> 07 8627077 http://www.componic.co.nz

[OT] Windows OS required
by James Pluck 22 Aug '08

22 Aug '08

Hi all, I am looking for a copy of Windows XP (SP2 minimum) or Vista (Business or better - 64 preferred) to buy. I'm only interested in a legitimate license and media. Unfortunately I can't afford a retail version of Vista and no-one seems to have XP anymore :( If anyone has bought a pc recently and wants to offload any "Microsoft tax" that came with it I would be willing to discuss it. Please don't give me a hard time for wanting Windows. I need to rebuild my PC and there are professional and personal reasons why it's not viable for me to go Linux only. Thank you James. -- James Pluck PalmOS Ergo Sum "Dear IRS: I would like to cancel my subscription. Please remove my name from your mailing list..."

XP [OT]
by Jaco van der Merwe 21 Aug '08

21 Aug '08

No worries, James I've cooked my machine(s) so frequently (hardware & software) & had endless issues with redmond, even if I prove I'm the legit owner of a licence (numerous through the years, actually), that I've now resorted to VM's (which may very well be a breach of licence, but I simply don't care any more). That way I can setup a basic system as I like it & back it up & store it. I can easily move it from machine to machine (and btw, run multiple copies, though I seldom do this; 1 is enough for my tests). If I do somethingh to blow my win, it's easy to recover _________________________________________________________________ Windows Live Spaces – your life, your Space. apologies
by Jaco van der Merwe 21 Aug '08

21 Aug '08

I'd like to apologize to the XP user for the tine of my last message As Craig pointed out, it may have been construed as 'derogatory' (the reference to 'Windoze' as opposed to 'windows'). This could prove counter-productive... If I came across a bit strong, it was not my intent So here is the long & the short of it. win licensing is a nightmare. Best just get an old box with a licence & fly with that. For distro's, go to www.distrowatch.com This is the be-all & end-all for distro's, and here you can pick & choose from many, MANY distro's, fOSS & commercial. Even listing for retail suppliers of disks. Go with a "LiveCD" (or a liveUSB if you want) to non-destructively try the system(s) before committing. Make nifty gifts too. Go to ubuntuforums.org for 90% of you Linux (any distro) questions. Resource & links are comprehensive, most users aren't as abrasive as myself, and turnaround time is usually very quick. Just be sure to do a search on a topic before asking a question that's been covered many time before. If all else fails, bring your kit to an "install-fest" @ your next gLUG meeting, when & wherever that happens. BTW. check the channels to see about the upcoming SoftwareFreedomDay.org on the 20th Sept. That may also be a very good time to get i's crossed & t's dotted _________________________________________________________________ Tired of having no room left in your inbox? Re: [wlug] wlug Digest, Vol 206, Issue 15
by Jaco van der Merwe 21 Aug '08

21 Aug '08

I think the point is being missed here. This is a LUG. It's all good & fine to keep XP around for legacy reasons, either in a VM or as a dual boot option, but there are numerous licensing pit-fall's involved. Focus on the (g)Linux (please) If you want a windoze OS, the simplest is really to go to TradeMe, and get an old busted machine. Use the rest for spares, or another home linux server (IPCop firewall? mythbuntu? torrentflux? NAS/RAS?). That way windows will basically cost you the price of shipping. (or you can be sneaky & try to lay your hands on a MSDN version; 2k is still the best) Any other option option, you simply spinning your wheels & creating more problems in the long run. I've tries to get an old XP licence from users that have 'upgraded' to vista; good luck with that one - Jaco _________________________________________________________________ It’s time to join the family - Get the next generation of Free Windows Live Services now! http://get.live.com/

SFD library poster: call for contributions
by Bryce Utting 19 Aug '08

19 Aug '08

Hi all, I'm preparing a display that's to occupy a poster in the public library for the two weeks leading up to Software Freedom Day. The intent is to demonstrate the usefulness and attraction of FOSS software with a whoooole bunch of screenshots, grouped (transparently) around a set of categories that'll hopefully catch all comers. Ideally: someone will walk past, see a bunch of colour, see something surprising being done with (eg) OOo Writer, and think "... if I download a copy (and become awesomely talented), *I* could do that." (whether they show up at the installfest is kindof a side goal: it'd be great, but we really want people knowing what they can do with FOSS, and also knowing that it's free and that they don't need to fork out $$$ for Office, Photoshop, Unreal, Visual Studio, or whatever. and where to get it from, of course.) To do that, we need colourful, compelling, and useful (where applicable) screenshots of a wide range of FOSS software. These screenshots need to be released under Creative Commons, so we need to draw on resources within WLUG rather than simply downloading sample screenshots. We've got around 2.4 x 1.2 metres, so we've got real estate to burn. I've set up a page detailing the goals, showing the current layout design (using, ahem, downloaded screenshots), and listing candidate packages: http://homepages.ihug.co.nz/~butting/wlug/contrib.html If you think you can offer something -- killer examples of Inkscape or Gimp in use, Kino being used to create something lively, a Rosegarden composition, a Mono program that looks good onscreen -- please, please, check the page out and drop me a line. ta, Bryce

RMS in the press.
by Bruce Kingsbury 05 Aug '08

05 Aug '08

http://computerworld.co.nz/news.nsf/news/0064FE274A08BA2CCC25749A00383CB3 Richard Stallman will be speaking at Waikato University, 6pm Aug 20th. No idea where yet, but I've been told Marieke is onto it so hopefully I'll know soon. Copyright vs Community in the Age of Computer Networks Copyright developed in the age of the printing press, and was designed to fit with the system of centralized copying imposed by the printing press. But the copyright system does not fit well with computer networks, and only draconian punishments can enforce it. The global corporations that profit from copyright are lobbying for draconian punishments, and to increase their copyright powers, while suppressing public access to technology. But if we seriously hope to serve the only legitimate purpose of copyright -- to promote progress, for the benefit of the public -- then we must make changes in the other direction.

Rod really needs no introduction. He exploded onto the ICT scene in New Zealand in 1995 when he founded Glazier Systems, which was subsequently bought by Advantage Group to become well-known ICT solutions company Intergen. He then created AfterMail, an Exchange product later sold to American company Quest Software for an 8-figure sum and judged the "Best Exchange Product" at TechEd 2006 in Boston. Not yet done, he then created well-known NZX-listed Software-as-a-Service (SaaS) accounting company Xero which is changing the way small businesses do accounting in New Zealand Free for NZCS members and inexpensive for non-members. Theme deletion...
by Chakat Sandwalker 01 Aug '08

01 Aug '08

Is it possible to delete appearance theme customisations (i.e. icons, controls, window border, etc.) that the user has installed manually (say, from www.gnome-look.org) but the Appearance applet refuses to delete? I've installed a number of themes/customisations that I can't delete because the 'Delete' button is greyed out. As a result I have a glut of entries to choose from, most of which I don't want any more. Sandy

NZ mirrors

Hi folks, Couple of questions: 1. I'm on the WorldExchange/XNet network. Traffic local to the XN nw does not count towards my (75G) cap. Are there any Uni's or FTP mirors available for Ubuntu/Deb & other distro's on the XN new? 2. I live & work in Auckland City & travelling out to Waikato on a scooter is problematic, to say the least. Are there any other geek-meets closer to home? Thanks - Jaco _________________________________________________________________ Tired of having no room left in your inbox? Thanks for the info, Lindsay, but I already use citylink as a tries & tested source. The problem is that xnet traffic does not count towards my cap, so any resources on the 'local network' is 'free' I've already put in a request to the sysadmin for ftp.wicks.co.nz, but he's indicated that he simply doesn't have the space. Uni's seem my best bet Thanks anyhow -J > From: wlug-request(a)list.waikato.ac.nz > Subject: wlug Digest, Vol 205, Issue 17 > To: wlug(a)list.waikato.ac.nz > Date: Wed, 23 Jul 2008 12:00:06 +1200 > > Send wlug mailing list submissions to > wlug(a)list.waikato.ac.nz > > To subscribe or unsubscribe via the World Wide Web, visit > http://list.waikato.ac.nz/mailman/listinfo/wlug > or, via email, send a message with subject or body 'help' to > wlug-request(a)list.waikato.ac.nz > > You can reach the person managing the list at > wlug-owner(a)list.waikato.ac.nz > > When replying, please edit your Subject line so it is more specific > than "Re: Contents of wlug digest..." > > > Today's Topics: > > 1. RMS visit. Who would turn up?
by Bruce Kingsbury 19 Jul '08

19 Jul '08

Just wondering. If CompSci were to host a talk by Richard Stallman (proposed Sat 9th August, early evening) who would definitely turn up for it? WLUG cannot organise this. RMS refuses to have anything to do with LUGS. CompSci are considering it, but don't think that 100 or more people will turn up. I have no idea how much (or how little) interest there actually is in this presentation. Show of hands? -- This email is for the intended recipient only. Useful blogs/websites
by Daniel Lawson 18 Jul '08

18 Jul '08

Hey guys Thought I'd point out a couple of useful websites that have been collecting in my rss reader http://www.debian-administration.org/ often has some useful posts on it. Yes, it's Debian focussed, which also means it mostly applies to Ubuntu as well, but a lot of the stuff that comes up applies to all distros just as readily. For example, the author is currently trying to run a daily series of "Commands you might have missed", covering off simple utilities like pstree and watch that a lot of people don't know about. http://debaday.debian.net/ tries to cover off a Debian Package of the Day, however the author struggle for content to keep it going at that rate. Still comes up with some useful entries at least twice a week. http://www.debuntu.org/ is a Debian and Ubuntu tips and tricks page. The OpenSource Toolbox at http://ostoolbox.blogspot.com/ covers a wider range of projects and platforms than the above http://www.linuxdevices.com/ is a site dedicated to embedded devices and platforms that interoperate or run linux (and other free or open platforms I think) If you're interested in following kernel developments, then www.kerneltrap.org and www.kernelplanet.org might be interesting to you. The former is a meta-discussion of what's going on in the linux kernel mailing list, and the latter is an aggregation of various kernel developers blogs, so quite often has a lot of other random stuff in it. And of course, there's the WLUG wiki at http://www.wlug.org.nz and Planet WLUG at http://planet.wlug.org.nz/, if you didn't know about them already :) Daniel

Big Buck Bunny builds a better Blender
by Bruce Kingsbury 15 Jul '08

15 Jul '08

Thought this might be of interest to the list, particularly after covering the Blender software and BBB movie at John's presentation. *Big Buck Bunny* is the colorful product of the Peach<http://www.bigbuckbunny.org/>open movie project: an animated short released online and on DVD. But in addition to the 'toon itself, Peach has produced an altogether different yield: improvements to the Blender <http://www.blender.org/> 3-D modeling application. Like its predecessor Project Orange<http://orange.blender.org/>, Peach pushed the open source tool forward with the demands of a real-world media production, in a way that hobbyist usage cannot. http://www.linux.com/feature/139454 -- This email is for the intended recipient only. hey guys, I'm new at the UoW and also at this mailinglist ;) If someone is interested in this: I'm from Germany, 22 years old, using archlinux and (at my workstation at home) gentoo. So this is my first question: I've tried to setup an imap account for my university address at thunderbird. But everytime I trying to connect to imap.gmail.com i get the message "Invalid credentials (Failure)". While searching in google for a solution I can only find the notice to activate IMAP at webmail. That was the first thing i've done. Does anyone know something about this behaviour? or how to setup the imap-account correctly? Thanx and greatz, Ivo

hugin panoramas
by John Billings 28 Jun '08

28 Jun '08

I posted my slides and the panorama image I created from the pictures I took at the meeting last week: http://wlug.org.nz/JohnBillings The Hugin interface is pretty easy to use. I added the two pictures and it assembled them and ouput a .tif image. I opened that up in GIMP and cropped it a bit, there were some gray areas that hugin left around the sides. Then used GIMP to convert it to a .jpg image. If you want to see the full size image it's at: http://nimhq.net/wlug-hugin-example.jpg You can see the seam where the two images were joined by the exit sign, but I thought it did a pretty good job. Think it is really best for scenery shots of course, so I dug through some old photos, and found a couple shots out at Maunganui I could join: http://nimhq.net/maunganui-1.jpg http://nimhq.net/maunganui-2.jpg Resulting in: http://nimhq.net/maunganui-hugin.jpg Thought I'd share my experiment. fedora 9 and -lglib
by stephen pearce 16 Jun '08

16 Jun '08

Hi I'm trying to compile the source version of Lazarus .. which is a gui ide for the free pascal compiler (object pascal which is almost identical to delphi) ... on a fedora 9 installation. FPC compiles ok .. you have to get the binary initially to bootstrap compile the source distro of the fpc compiler) ... lazarus compiles ok but aborts on linking with a message saying it cannot link to -lglib. I got the source for glib and compiled and installed this .. but lazarus gave the same error. I was originally running the amd 64 bit version of fedora .. x86-64 .. but reinstalled the i386 version .. with no change (rather frustrated by now) ...I then tried seaching the makefiles and other installation stuff looking for libglib references .. without any luck to date ... though libglib v 2 is in /usr/lib I am vaguely aware that the fedora library comformation is a bit differenct to debian but don't know the details nor of a simple way to spoff software looking in the debian places to cope with the fedora conformation .. has anyone any experience along these lines or other thoughts on this Thanks -- Stephen Pearce Whangarei

Mail client difficulty
by Graham Lauder 13 Jun '08

13 Jun '08

This one is driving me a bit batty at the moment. I've been using KMail up till now but the addressbook has a flaky UI which is frustrating and nonintuitive to say the least and there are one or two other issues that have caused me problems with lost mails and such. Good reports filtered down to me about Thunderbird and Evolution so I installed them and set everything up and neither of them can hookup up to my popmail accounts. All the settings are exactly the same as the Kmail settings and Kmail hooks in and downloads everything no problems Obviously running on OpenSuSE 10.3. RimuHosting Hiring Linux Gurus
by Peter Bryant 05 Jun '08

05 Jun '08

Hi all. It's been about 6 months since I last posted here looking for more staff. But we keep growing, and we keep needing more staff. So here goes again... I'm looking for one or two more full time people to do Linux support and sysadmin work for RimuHosting: setup people's Linux servers, install Linux apps, troubleshoot problems, help manage the few thousand Linux servers we run, and the like. It can be very interesting, challenging work. You get to play with _lots_ of servers, distros and get exposure to just about every app that runs on Linux. I'd also consider uni students on a part time (evenings, weekends?) basis. For those that don't know, RimuHosting is based in Cambridge, down the road from Hamilton, and we provide Linux VPS and dedicated server hosting and support to customers dotted all around the world. More info (and application procedures) is over at: http://www.trademe.co.nz/Trade-Me-Jobs/IT-Jobs/Networking-systems/auction-1… If you had any questions just reply off list to me. Cheers, Peter http://rimuhosting.com PS: The link on http://www.wlug.org.nz/WlugMailingList to http://www.wlug.org.nz/archive/mailing-list-aup.txt gives a 403 Forbidden...

Re: [wlug] Upgrading Kubuntu Feisty Fawn to Hardy Heron
by GJB 07 May '08

07 May '08

If you upgrade turn off the lock screen on Xscreensaver (if you use it). If the screen locks during the upgrade the system will not let you back in even with your own password, it does something screwy with PAM modules and locks everybody out whilst waiting for reply to numerous .config replace confirmation prompts. You'll probably have to re-install anyway. Wasn't there just a discussion that it screws around with sudo also ... probably same thing as with PAM module frigging around? > -------- Original Message -------- > Subject: Re: [wlug] Upgrading Kubuntu Feisty Fawn to Hardy Heron > From: "David Hallett" <david(a)pulsar.net.nz> > Date: Wed, May 07, 2008 11:05 pm > To: "Waikato Linux Users Group" <wlug(a)list.waikato.ac.nz> > > On Wed, May 7, 2008 at 11:51 AM, Glyn Webster <glyn(a)wave.co.nz> wrote: > > > I'm thinking of upgrading the Kubuntu on my PC from Feisty Fawn to Hardy > > Heron, is there anything special I have to consider? > > > You need to read this: > https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Installation/UpgradeFromOldVersion > > -- > David Hallett, BSc, MNZCS, MNZSA > Pulsar Computer Solutions Ltd > P.O. I've bought 10 Dick Smith DVD-R's, and they only have 1,852,960 blocks available on them, not the full 2,298,496 (3.5GiB of data, not 4.4GiB). At least that's what K3B and GnomeBaker both claim. sudo broken after upgrade from gutsy to hairy^Whardy
by Glenn Ramsey 01 May '08

01 May '08

I just upgraded a spare box, to see if it's safe to upgrade my main machine, and the upgrade has broken sudo. When I try to use sudo it says: sudo: unable to resolve host calc calc being the hostname of this machine. How do I fix this? I guess adding the hostname to /etc/hosts would fix it but I can't do that because sudo is broken. Also I haven't set up a root account on this machine. Aside from booting from a rescue disk is there any other way to fix this? Glenn -- Glenn Ramsey <glenn(a)componic.co.nz> 07 8627077 http://www.componic.co.nz

Video card fun
by Bryce Utting 29 Apr '08

29 Apr '08

Hi all, Recently purchased a Gigabyte nVidia from PB Tech, hit problems with it (google "8800gt black screen" if interested), and have effectively been told by them to sod off. So, three questions: 1. Anyone got a spare 550W+ ATX supply I could borrow for a few days for last-ditch troubleshooting? (nothing on the web suggests it'll make a difference, but it doesn't hurt to demonstrate that, yes, I've done -everything- to narrow it down to the card.) 2. Once a letter quoting the Consumer Guarantees Act has obtained a refund -- any recommendations on anyone to buy from who -isn't- a thorough fscktard? 3. Thoughts on reasonably-priced preferably non-nVidia cards suitable for gaming? (PCIe, 512MB, etc. the 8800GT was.... -ouch-... $380) ('tis a Windows box -- sigh -- so driver support is a low priority.) ta, Bryce -- http://homepages.ihug.co.nz/~butting

There's a WLUG meeting tonight: ---------------------------------------------------------------------- 7:30pm MS4.G.02 (http://www.waikato.ac.nz/contacts/map?MS4) Robert O'Callahan (http://weblogs.mozillazine.org/roc/) will talk about Firefox 3 development FOXHOLES: News From The Front Line Of The Browser Wars Web browsers have become a primary application platform, arguably more important than traditional client operating systems. They are also a key security frontier, a vigorously competitive market, and a crucial front in the battle for free software and open standards. For these and other reasons, browser development is both extremely challenging and extremely important. As a core Firefox developer, I will discuss challenges facing our project: competition from Internet Explorer and other browsers; changes to fundamental assumptions about code-level security vulnerabilities; sustaining and evolving a complex and fragile codebase; and the successes and failures of our tools and processes as one of the world's flagship open source projects. Looking forward, I will discuss our efforts to keep the Web vital, in concert with like-minded browser vendors and standards organizations, by enhancing the Web platform with vector and 3D graphics, offline Web applications, accessibility, ric her typography and layout, enhancements to the Javascript language, efforts to improve cross-browser compatibility, and more. I will talk about why everyone should care and what people can do to help --- which includes joining Mozilla to hack on Gecko with my team!

REMINDER: WLUG meeting is on Monday
by Meeting Reminder Bot 24 Apr '08

24 Apr '08

There's a Waikato Linux Users Group meeting on Monday: ---------------------------------------------------------------------- 7:30pm MS4.G.02 (http://www.waikato.ac.nz/contacts/map?MS4) Robert O'Callahan (http://weblogs.mozillazine.org/roc/) will talk about Firefox 3 development FOXHOLES: News From The Front Line Of The Browser Wars Web browsers have become a primary application platform, arguably more important than traditional client operating systems.

Good News; http://www.groklaw.net/article.php?story=20080421091129596 "Word documents generated by today's version of Microsoft Office 2007 do not conform to ISO/IEC 29500," said Brown in a blog post recounting the process of testing a document against the "strict" and "transitional" schema defined in the standard. Let's all make sure governments mandating 'software that conforms to ISO standards' are aware of this, mmmk? Bad news; http://opensource.org/node/328 OLPC to use Windows XP instead of Linux? WTF? Epic fail! "I have no idea what pressures Negroponte is under. I have no idea what failures of leadership, vision, or courage have occurred, are occurring, or are at risk of occurring at the OLPC project today. It would be irresponsible to jump to too many conclusions based on a single article. But if OLPC abandons its open source roots, then I do not see the project accomplishing any of its goals."

Fwd: Waikato Committee Meeting
by David Hallett 14 Apr '08

14 Apr '08

Peter has the following dates available this month: 16,22,28,29 & 30. The last 3 subject to change at short notice. Do these correlate with any dates you have available? If so, please let us know on list which days. (ASAP!) Otherwise, May 1st or May 8th are the next Thursdays on which we can meet. Thanks, David Unfortunately we had too many last minute cancellations to ensure that we met quorum for our committee meeting. We need to have one this month! Can people please advise on list what dates they can attend. We need attendance commitment from committee members otherwise we end up wasting each other's time. Apologies to Ivan who didn't get my email and was the only person who turned up to the last scheduled committee meeting. I have also received an email from Paul Matthews (CEO) who informed me that we need to appoint a Branch Secretary (it's an "officer" of the branch, and hence a constitutional requirement). Can someone willing to perform this role please volunteer - that last thing we want to do is draw straws for the position!

Hamilton Curry - 17th April 2008 - upcoming to the Hamilton 400 V8 Supercars
by Lindsay Druett 11 Apr '08

11 Apr '08

Yes, we're definitely well overdue for a Thursday night curry in H'tron. And with geeks coming to the tron to watch the V8 supercars in action, well, what's a better time to get together and have a curry ? So far, I have got 4 people keen for an early curry, personally 6:30pm onwards would suit me. Because of the nature of the upcoming event, the Hamilton 400 V8 Supercars, I really need to get firm numbers so that I can book ahead At this stage, I'm looking at Little India in Alexandra St which is in Hamilton CBD. HP jump in on Linux sub-notebook

Competition is great. Linux is great for this too, given their (lack of) horsepower and the licensing cost (basically zero). http://arstechnica.com/journals/linux.ars/2008/04/08/new-hp-education-subno… I see Microsoft is extending XP Home/Starter - just for this category only though. Hi folks, I've moved on to a new job now, doing more hard-core networking & security, and I'm running into a 'glass wall' in terms of functionality & performance. I bought my MacBook pro because it's really good hardware & nice & portable, not to mention it looks really slick. Intel to multithread all applications
by Anthony Cull 02 Apr '08

02 Apr '08

So intel are deciding to finally innovate a solution people have been asking for years. [Intel today revealed it can convert single threaded software to multithreaded mode without any code modification. The new 'speculative parallel threading' process monitors software and examines whether its processes can be run in parallel. If they can execute succesfully, the software can be recompiled to run as a multithreaded app. Intel says it has realised that programmers are going to need machine help to get software running as multithreaded. "We can't blame the programmers," an Intel spokesman said. "The industry has been complaining for 30 years about how difficult parallel programming is."] http://apcmag.com/we_can_transform_single_thread_to_multithread_intel.htm -- Anthony Cull cullanthony(a)fastmail.fm -- http://www.fastmail.fm - The way an email service should be

Hi all. I thought there may be a memory expert out there in WLUG land :) Is it deemed a good idea to mix DUal channel with non-dual channel ram in a machine with 4 ram slots? I currently have 1 gb of ddr2-667 ram and was looking at getting another 2 gb but I'm not sure if it is worht getting dual channel ram and running the dual channel in one pair of slots and the single stick in one slot of the other pair. Sale on notebooks at Dick Smith Powerhouse
by Ian McDonald 27 Mar '08

27 Mar '08

Similar to last year there are a couple of good notebook deals: Acer AS5315-100508Mi - Celeron M 1.86, 512 MB, 80 GB, DVD, Vista Basic, Looks like it has webcam but doesn't mention it - $648 before cashback, $499 - only 20 on Saturday Asus Eee PC 701 - $399 - only 20 on Friday. If you want these I would suggest you queue hours before hand. We bought an Acer last year of slightly lower spec and it has been great and runs Ubuntu well. Obivously the Eee PC already runs Linux. -- Web: http://wand.net.nz/~iam4/ Blog: http://iansblog.jandi.co.nz

FYI: Ubuntu 6.10 reaches end-of-life on April 26, 2008
by Simon Green 25 Mar '08

25 Mar '08

---------- Forwarded message ---------- From: Steve Langasek <steve.langasek(a)ubuntu.com> Date: 26 Mar 2008 09:04 Subject: Ubuntu 6.10 reaches end-of-life on April 26, 2008 Ubuntu announced the release of 6.10 almost 18 months ago, on October 26, 2006. As with the earlier releases, Ubuntu committed to ongoing security and critical fixes for a period of 18 months. The support period is now nearing its end and Ubuntu 6.10 will reach end of life on Friday April 25th, 2008. At that time, Ubuntu Security Notices will no longer include information or updated packages for Ubuntu 6.10. The supported upgrade path from Ubuntu 6.10 is via Ubuntu 7.04. Instructions and caveats for the upgrade may be found at https://help.ubuntu.com/community/FeistyUpgrades. Note that upgrades to version 7.10 and beyond are only supported in multiple steps, via an upgrade first to 7.04, then to 7.10. Both Ubuntu 7.04 and Ubuntu 7.10 continue to be actively supported with security updates and select high-impact bug fixes. All announcements of official security updates for Ubuntu releases are sent to the ubuntu-security-announce mailing list, information about which may be found at https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-security-announce. Since its launch in October 2004 Ubuntu has become one of the most highly regarded Linux distributions with millions of users in homes, schools, businesses and governments around the world. Ubuntu is Open Source software, costs nothing to download, and users are free to customise or alter their software in order to meet their needs.

Re: [wlug] wlug Digest, Vol 201, Issue 22
by Jaco van der Merwe 24 Mar '08

OK, fine... here's my 'rant' Why, if OOXML has been roundly rejected as a standard, and ODF has been accepted (due in large by M$'s non-adherence to the W3C's standards), do companies in NZ INSIST on accepting only M$ formats, but not PDF or ODF? Especially the large ITC recruiters, who really should be in the know (mind you, I've come across who do not know what 'SDLC' means) I find it common practice for organisations to say one thing (openness, transparency, accountability), and do exactly the opposite. Same reasoning goes for much of the technologies used. It seems to be application-oriented, and not solution-oriented. Citrix, Active Directory, IIS, MSSQL and other M$/Windows-only products, whereas there are plenty of other OSS solutions that will do the job just as well, if not better & cheaper. Granted, many of these platforms have their merits, and use them where their use is merited, but not out of habit or a knee-jerk reaction. Just my gripe...seems myopic > From: wlug-request(a)list.waikato.ac.nz > Subject: wlug Digest, Vol 201, Issue 22 > To: wlug(a)list.waikato.ac.nz > Date: Mon, 24 Mar 2008 12:00:04 +1300 > > Send wlug mailing list submissions to > wlug(a)list.waikato.ac.nz > > To subscribe or unsubscribe via the World Wide Web, visit > http://list.waikato.ac.nz/mailman/listinfo/wlug > or, via email, send a message with subject or body 'help' to > wlug-request(a)list.waikato.ac.nz > > You can reach the person managing the list at > wlug-owner(a)list.waikato.ac.nz > > When replying, please edit your Subject line so it is more specific > than "Re: Contents of wlug digest..." > > > Today's Topics: > > 1. Xbox Media Centre
by Lee Ball 20 Mar '08

20 Mar '08

Hello, I was browsing the Google Groups and came across a meeting mentioning that someone will be going through setting up an Xbox Media Centre. The reason for my email is that not only is that something I will be looking at doing myself but its also a great idea for a meeting. I'm a member of ManLUG which I believe was the first LUG in the United Kingdom and sometimes the meeting are a little dull, I've tried to liven them up recently, last time I did an EeePC demonstration and run through but as stated above, I'm looking at doing an Xbox media centre at some point and a recreation of the meeting that you had might be another good meeting. I just wondered if anyone had any resources at all from that meeting? thanks Lee ----------------------------------------- Email sent from www.virginmedia.com/email Virus-checked using McAfee(R) Software and scanned for spam

Hard drive for data recovery purposes
by Bruce Kingsbury 20 Mar '08

I'm trying to find an IBM Deskstar 61.5GB harddrive (model IC35L060AVER07-0) I've been asked to try to recover a number of photos from a dead harddrive. It doesn't show up in BIOS at all so I think the controller is dead. If I can find an identical drive in working condition I might be able to swap the controller over and read this one. Can anyone here help me?

Re: [wlug] USB Dialup Modem Help

" I have a feeling that there may be other issues: connecting the USB modem to a phone jack, kills the dial out ability of our home phone. It doesn't matter whether the modem is connected to the computer or not. I can get a dial-tone, dial a number and then nothing. Unplug the phone line to the modem and the home phone works again. Weird! I might bring it down to the next fix-it meeting, to see if anybody has any ideas..." I get to fix a lot of modems at work, hardware faults (Sky decoders) Check to see if it has a relay in it. They are small, about 18mm long and 5 or 6 mm high and wide. They can get sticky, sometimes giving them a tap will dislodge them, probably not for long though. Actually looking at a few modems here they often have larger relays of diferant dimensions. Some of our modems don't use relays at all, just transistors controlled with optocouplers. These don't seem to be prone to this sort of failure. ie, if they do fail they don't work at all. David

USB Dialup Modem Help
by Shannon Skinner 17 Mar '08

17 Mar '08

Hi I've come across an old USB dialup modem and I'm a bit stuck getting it connected to an ISP. I'm trying to get it going so I can give it to my parents and switch them fully over to linux. I'm currently testing it on my Ubuntu 7.10 machine with my parents dialup account with Kiwi Online (KOL) and the modem is recognised as /dev/ttyACM0. I've tried wvdial and gnome-ppp, and it seemed to dial okay with those but it would lose the connection straight away and re-dial endlessly. The closest I've got is setting up a chat account with pppconfig and then using pon to connect. This is the results from plog when using pon: Mar 11 20:58:30 lobo pppd[7062]: pppd 2.4.4 started by shannon, uid 1000 Mar 11 20:58:31 lobo chat[7064]: abort on (BUSY) Mar 11 20:58:31 lobo chat[7064]: abort on (NO CARRIER) Mar 11 20:58:31 lobo chat[7064]: abort on (VOICE) Mar 11 20:58:31 lobo chat[7064]: abort on (NO DIALTONE) Mar 11 20:58:31 lobo chat[7064]: abort on (NO DIAL TONE) Mar 11 20:58:31 lobo chat[7064]: abort on (NO ANSWER) Mar 11 20:58:31 lobo chat[7064]: abort on (DELAYED) Mar 11 20:58:31 lobo chat[7064]: send (ATZ^M) Mar 11 20:58:31 lobo chat[7064]: expect (OK) Mar 11 20:58:31 lobo chat[7064]: ATZ^M^M Mar 11 20:58:31 lobo chat[7064]: OK Mar 11 20:58:31 lobo chat[7064]: -- got it Mar 11 20:58:31 lobo chat[7064]: send (ATDT087305656^M) Mar 11 20:58:32 lobo chat[7064]: expect (CONNECT) Mar 11 20:58:32 lobo chat[7064]: ^M Mar 11 20:58:52 lobo chat[7064]: ATDT087305656^M^M Mar 11 20:58:52 lobo chat[7064]: CONNECT Mar 11 20:58:52 lobo chat[7064]: -- got it Mar 11 20:58:52 lobo chat[7064]: send (^M) Mar 11 20:58:52 lobo chat[7064]: expect (ogin:) Mar 11 20:58:52 lobo chat[7064]: 115200^M Mar 11 20:58:53 lobo chat[7064]: ^I^M Mar 11 20:58:53 lobo chat[7064]: login: Mar 11 20:58:53 lobo chat[7064]: -- got it Mar 11 20:58:53 lobo chat[7064]: send ([username]^M) Mar 11 20:58:53 lobo chat[7064]: expect (ssword:) Mar 11 20:58:53 lobo chat[7064]: [username]^M Mar 11 20:58:53 lobo chat[7064]: Password: Mar 11 20:58:53 lobo chat[7064]: -- got it Mar 11 20:58:53 lobo chat[7064]: send (??????) So it seems to connect alright but then times out on sending some config stuff? ifconfig will show my lo and eth0 connections, and I can bring up the ppp0 connection (ifconfig ppp0 up) for the 20 or 30 seconds it is connected. I tried taking down eth0 and unplugging network cables in case of any interference (not that there should be I guess, DNS maybe but I don't know!) I only get about one night a week to "play" with this stuff, so it could take me a while to figure out on my own. I'm hoping that since I can actually make a connection, it should be something simple to get going. Any suggestions? Cheers Shannon

Presumably this tread is inspired by WIRED's article: http://howto.wired.com/wiki/Build_A_Digital_Music_Server See also: http://en.jinzora.com/ I've been toying around with a PVR/DVR system back in SA (MythTV, etc), as there's very little in this country. Don't like the idea of having to b in front of ur telly @ a particular time / 4am, otherwise you miss the next episode of u'r series, or having 2 sit through ad's for 'feminine products'/promo for some crackpot I think there might be legislative restrictions on 'time-shifting' broadcast... Check that you implement DLNA with your streaming server (ref: OpenDLNA) so it works PnP with devices such as PS3 & PSP (XBox 360 & Wii?) Also, if you utilise a firewall with DynDNS (such as IPCop) & port forwarding, you can place your slimserver onto the 'net, & thus have a 'radio station'. Been using slimserver for a few years (pre-logitech days). Pretty cool > From: wlug-request(a)list.waikato.ac.nz > Subject: wlug Digest, Vol 201, Issue 14 > To: wlug(a)list.waikato.ac.nz > Date: Mon, 17 Mar 2008 07:57:45 +1300 > > Send wlug mailing list submissions to > wlug(a)list.waikato.ac.nz > > To subscribe or unsubscribe via the World Wide Web, visit > http://list.waikato.ac.nz/mailman/listinfo/wlug > or, via email, send a message with subject or body 'help' to > wlug-request(a)list.waikato.ac.nz > > You can reach the person managing the list at > wlug-owner(a)list.waikato.ac.nz > > When replying, please edit your Subject line so it is more specific > than "Re: Contents of wlug digest..." > > > Today's Topics: > > 1. SqueezeCenter
by Peter Reutemann 16 Mar '08

16 Mar '08

Hi all Came across the nifty SqueezeCenter today: http://www.slimdevices.com/pi_features.html It's a perl-based, open-source, mp3-streaming server with a really cool web-interface. Installation is fairly simple, if you're running Ubuntu (or any debian-based distro): http://wiki.slimdevices.com/?DebianPackage It basically involves the following steps: - add the following line to your apt sources list ("sudo vi /etc/apt/sources.list"): deb http://debian.slimdevices.com unstable main - update the cache sudo apt-get update - and install the center sudo apt-get install squeezecenter A minimal setup after installation finishes is just providing the top-most directory of your MP3 collection. Just point your browser to the center's address (http://A.B.C.D:9000/) and click your way through the wizard (no need for registration or those little SqueezeBox players). After the initial setup and the collection scan has finished, just point any MP3 player that can handle URLs, like Rhythmbox, to the server's streaming URL (http://A.B.C.D:9000/stream.mp3) select your machine as "player" in the web interface and just add songs to your playlist, play/pause/stop streaming, etc. That is the killer-app for my home-network that I was looking for for ages, providing an easy to use web-interface for streaming my MP3s over WLAN! The cool thing is, that each machine connecting to the center maintains its own playlist. Ideal if you don't like your flatmates taste of music or your partner can't stand your strange music collection. ;-) Cheers, Peter -- Peter Reutemann, Dept. of Computer Science, University of Waikato, NZ http://www.cs.waikato.ac.nz/~fracpete/ +64 (7) 838-4466 Ext. 5174

Hi Guys, I've had contact with Simon Spence from Solarix who is really keen to hear back if there is anyone who could work on an exciting project involving Asterisk. This sounds like quite an exciting job opportunity and the prospective employer sounds very flexible with the work arrangements (totally flexible hours). "Wanted, 2 Astrix programmers to work on exciting virtual PBX and phone system, familiarity with PHP important. Full time and part time long term work involved in project. Using Trixbox as a base we wish to increase its functionality. Build list includes control panel and other functionality." Please get them to respond to Mike Conner at mike.conner(a)solarix.co.nz

Not sure if it is entirely relevant, but maybe these could help: keywords to look/search for are 'PPP _and_ stupid mode'... I set one up for a friend last year with KOL. I seem to remember that you needed to use Gnomeppp, The other dialers would not connect. and yes, go to setup, options and tick the box "ignore terminal string" (stupid mode) I have an idea their was something else I did but I can't remember at the moment. Kppp and WVdial couldn't be set to ignore init strings. David
