Donated computers -- nice Linux install
by Bruce Kingsbury 27 May '09

27 May '09

If anyone's planning to donate computers (someone mentioned it at the last Saturday Workshop) I've just set up three here. In the process of setting them up nicely with codecs, flash, educational software etc I've created a nice 'standard image' and a script to install it via the network and modify the fstab and grub appropriately so I can go from a zero-wiped drive to a well configured working machine ready to donate in five or ten minutes. If anyone else wants a copy of my script and tar file just give me a call or an email.

OT: Help - disk crash
by David McNab 27 May '09

27 May '09

Hi all, My wife's (Toshiba Satellite 1130, WinXP) laptop has gone legs-up. Sometimes manages to partly boot, sometimes not. I'm unable to determine whether it's the hard disk, or something in the motherboard, or both. (She's had the laptop 3+ years). Can anyone please suggest someone in Hamilton who can try to extract her Thunderbird account data from the disk? (The rest doesn't matter too much, but the email archive is critical). We can afford a reasonable fee, but definitely can't afford to dump hundreds or thousands of $$ into a lengthy disk recovery attempt - just a quick qualified "It's stuffed" at worst, or a USB stick full of rescued data at best would suffice. I'd do it myself but I don't have the hardware here, since the laptop HDD doesn't have a standard IDE or SATA connection. I tried booting the laptop from a 'buntu live disk, but am unable to mount the disk from within Linux. Cheers David

REMINDER: WLUG meeting tonight!
by Meeting Reminder Bot 25 May '09

25 May '09

There's a WLUG meeting tonight: ---------------------------------------------------------------------- JohnBillings, BruceKingsbury and ChrisOhalloran will talk about the past, present and future of the WlugBladeServer, 'hoiho'. The server hosts this wiki, as well as some other services you possibly didn't know about. * Chris will talk about our membership database and talk about how you can get a shell account, and why you would even want that. * Bruce will demonstrate some of the remote management features (integrated Lights Out or iLO) using WLUG's identical spare server 'kororaa', which was donated to us a year or two ago by Canterbury DHB. * John will talk about some of the history, current status and future maintenance required on the server. If you care about the WLUG server infrastructure, are, or would like to be one of the WlugSysadmins, or just interested in how the server is configured and what services are available, you should attend this meeting.

End of an Era in CHC
by James Pluck 19 May '09

19 May '09

Hi All. I was reading through Stuff and came across this article about the disbanding of the PCUG. The article blames the rise of the internet for the fall in membership numbers of user groups and computer clubs. (between the lines) You no longer need to go to a club to find people to help with issues or to swap stories, etc with. This is now done in various fora online. http://www.stuff.co.nz/technology/gadgets/2422588/End-of-a-PC-era-in-Christ… Interesting reading methinks. Any comments? J

Vim made easy: how to get your favorite IDE features in Vim
by Peter Reutemann 19 May '09

19 May '09

Hi there I still remember the days of my Unix admin training (on IBM's AIX) and the editor of choice was "vi". Though vim ("vi improved") is definitely easier to use than vi, its two modes (command and insert) still throw off newbies. But after you get to know vim a bit better (or its graphical counterpart gvim), there is a lot more to it than just editing the odd text file once in a while. The following ars article is quite a good read: http://arstechnica.com/open-source/guides/2009/05/vim-made-easy-how-to-get-… Being a programmer, I really enjoy the "Tag List plugin" also mentioned in the article. Makes browsing of source code easy. If you ever have to work with LaTeX documents, then "VIM-LaTeX" will be your friend (unless you use kile or lyx): http://vim-latex.sourceforge.net/ Cheers, Peter -- Peter Reutemann, Dept. of Computer Science, University of Waikato, NZ http://www.cs.waikato.ac.nz/~fracpete/ Ph. +64 (7) 858-5174

convert and rename audio files...

Hi All, I have just burned some c/d's with Serpentine for a friend from some itunes he owns. More than half are correctly titled but the rest are not. I have re-named a lot of the tracks from e.g. <01 track 01.M4A> to <songname .M4A> However when I open the files in any media player or burner it reverts to its initial filename or nearest whole number e.g. <unknown track 1 .ogg> or <track 1 .wav> is there some way I can force a rename that will remain? Web-Host advice

Hi, guys Im looking at putting a personal web page online, in the next few months. I have chosen the domain name I am after and plan to purchase this soon. I would perfer to use the .net suffix, but a .co.nz could be used as a fallback option. Once the website is in a state worth uploading I will go for a web-hosting company solution (depending on price)(Linux host must, wordpress support, and preference for freedom to run personal python scripts are the only real requirments) . Any one got recommendations on a company to go with.

Grub and Ubuntu kernel updates
by Glenn Ramsey 10 May '09

10 May '09

Hi, On one of my machines I had an ubuntu installation on a single partition (sda3). I recently moved everything except /home onto another partition (sda6) and set up grub to boot from that partition. This was all working fine until there was a kernel update. The update reconfigured grub to try boot from the original partition, which failed, but fortunately grub lets you edit stuff before booting and I was able to fix it without too much pain. How do I fix it properly so that the next kernel update doesn't break it in the same way? Glenn -- Glenn Ramsey <glenn(a)componic.co.nz> 07 8627077 http://www.componic.co.nz

Uni Open Day thing

I emailed some people at the computer sci department about having a WLUG table at the open day thing. They weren't prepared to entertain that idea, but not like we were actually all that prepared to actually do it anyway. So those of you whom I talked about that with, (at the saturday workshop and committee meeting) I didn't follow up cause it's not happening. Thanks to Arthur for informing me about it anyhow. I'm going there anyhow to check it out and pick up our mail, so maybe we can organize something for next year or another event that might be more appropriate to table at. Best, John

I have changed to my desktop ubuntu 8.10 in the hope a more modern installation would help. Flash-plugin is installed so there must be some other thing that I do not have that prevents this station playing. OK, I followed the instructions given and found rythmbox defaults to "paused" when the play is actioned ( by doubleclick or play radio ) then total lock-up occurs and forced quit is needed. Hi all, I know that you all are intelligent and knowing internet users so please just ignore this :) I've been the lucky recipient of a phishing email purporting to be from the WLUG SUPPORT TEAM telling me that apparantly we are undergoing maintenace (sic) on our servers and need me to reply with my username and password to some group with a yahoo.com.hk address. Did we outsource our server maintenance recently and not tell the committee? *grin* Just a heads up everyone :) Cheers James.

Making a movie from a series of images
by Glenn Ramsey 16 Apr '09

16 Apr '09

Hi, For my study I use a piece of software that displays animated 3d models and which can generate images for each frame of the animation. I can make these image into an animated gif using ImageMagick's convert or into an mpeg movie using ffmpeg, for use in a ppt presentation. The mpeg has lots of compression artifacts (I guess because the images are computer generated they have sharp colour gradients). The animated gif looks great, but is quite a large file. There must be a way to make an movie that doesn't have the compression artifacts as is done for screencast type movies. I've done some web searching about this but I'm not sure what I'm looking for. Can anyone suggest a way to do this or some search terms that I could use? Cheers Glenn -- Glenn Ramsey <glenn(a)componic.co.nz> 07 8627077 http://www.componic.co.nz

comparing files
by Peter Reutemann 05 Apr '09

05 Apr '09

Hi there If you ever had to check the differences between two files, e.g., patching files, you most likely came across "diff". diff's output may be easy to parse for programs, but I personally prefer a graphical view of the differences side-by-side. I just came across the article "Linux GUI diff utilities a visual tour" covering quite a few tools that allow you to visually compare two files. More tools are mentioned in the comments (my personal favorite is KDiff3): http://www.handlewithlinux.com/Linux-GUI-diff-utilities-a-visual-tour Cheers, Peter -- Peter Reutemann, Dept. of Computer Science, University of Waikato, NZ http://www.cs.waikato.ac.nz/~fracpete/ Ph. +64 (7) 858-5174

Ubuntu "Windows install"
by Michael McDonald 02 Apr '09

02 Apr '09

Just did a test install of Ubuntu within Windows. It's a very easy installation and one that an "average" computer user could cope with. The downside, of course, is that Ubuntu is at the mercy of the Windows files system. That shouldn't be too much of a problem. Buoyed by that success, I tried it to do it with Windows 7 Beta. No such luck! Microsoft has changed the boot system and as a result Ubuntu won't boot to finish the installation. It's possible there are a few hacks to get around that. I haven't done any research. No doubt Canonical will devise a way of making it work with Windows 7. I suspect an attempt to do a "manual" install of Ubuntu would result in Windows 7 no longer booting. Michael

Connecting to KOL with dialup
by Michael McDonald 27 Mar '09

27 Mar '09

I set up a user with a trial of Ubuntu, an external modem, and a KOL connection. (Would be lovely to have broadband, but in this situation broadband is "not on"). Dialup seems to be changing! I had a few problems during testing connecting to Xtra (see http://wlug.org.nz/Xtra ) ... Xtra's prompts upset wvdial. I thought "Oh well, if I can get Xtra to connect, I ought to be able to get KOL to talk using the same technique". Trying the usual methods of connecting didn't give any joy, so I used putty to find out what was happening. Name and Password was fine, but then KOL responded with a binary string, repeated every second or so, 6th byte incrementing, for a while and then disconnected. The string is ... ff 03 c0 21 01 dc 00 12 01 04 7f d5 03 04 c0 23 05 06 77 2d 1d b1 (dc was the byte that incremented with each message) Is this familiar to anyone? I haven't rung KOL as the website claims no support for Linux, and I wouldn't expect normal help-desk staff to be able to answer that query anyway. At worst, I've donated, $10 to KOL! Now that the user has the computer, I've got to set up another one for testing. :-) (Not a problem!) Any suggestions? Michael

Re: [wlug] Where do I go on the Internet ask general questions about Debian Lenny?
by Glyn Webster 27 Mar '09

27 Mar '09

Thank you, all. I'll be watching the Debian forums and the "debian-user" mailing list now. I didn't know about them. (I'm watching at "debian-user" via Gmane.org's NNTP feed - KNode is nicer to use than Google Groups.) I'm using KDE 3.5 on Debian Lenny. "update-notifier" *says* it will work on KDE. I've followed the advice I just found here: http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=27109 I think what it says to do is the command-line equivalent to using "System > Preferences > Session", which isn't there in Debian. "update-notify" is running in the background now, and a grey icon appeared (and disappeared) in the KDE System Tray. I'll wait for an update to come up and see what happens. If nothing, I'll subscribe to "debian-user" and ask. In addition, experience in either of the two following areas would be a distinct advantage: 1) System Administration - for example: * Server internals (eg RAID, SATA, UPSes) * Debian GNU/Linux administration experience * LAN management (configuration, DNS/bind, diagnostics, etc) * Centralised account management - LDAP, SMB, SSH or 2) Video Processing - for example: * good knowledge of video formats and codecs * familiarity with command line video processing tools (eg ffmpeg) * streaming video Salary is negotiable based on skillset and experience. Our office has a small and friendly atmosphere near the middle of the CBD. Please send email to vacancies(a)global-pix.com to apply or request further information. Quite a while since I did it, but I got it to work. I think gnome-ppp is the only one that works because it can be set to ignore init strings. Hope that helps Dave

Hi All. I'd just like to thank Eric Light for his donation of 9 manuals for the WLUG Library. O'reilly: "Make", "Sendmail", "System Performance Tuning", "Running Linux" and "MH & XMH for users and programmers" MIS Press: Linux Config and Install A second copy of "Unix in a Nutshell" Sams: "Teach yourself SQL in 24 hours" and "A First Book of C++" second edition - This was the textbook for Waikato Uni first year C++ course (Is it still the text?) So, some oldies but there's some gems in there also. I'll load these into the catalogue this evening from home and they will be available for loan at the next usual WLUG meeting (or by prior arrangement with WLUG financial members at my home). REMINDER: WLUG meeting tonight!
by Meeting Reminder Bot 11 Mar '09

11 Mar '09

There's a WLUG meeting tonight: ---------------------------------------------------------------------- On 12 March, WLUG will be co-sponsoring several talks on OpenOffice.org repeated throughout the day at St. Pauls Methodist Center in Hamilton. Our presenter will be GrahamLauder, who you may remember gave and excellent talk at our SoftwareFreedomDay event last year. Since that talk OpenOffice 3 has been released, so anyone who attended that talk will want to see him speak again on what new features have been included in this release. The event is co-sponsored by the 20/20 Waikato Trust (http://waikato2020.wainet.org/) and Community Waikato (http://www.ssw.org.nz/) There is a http://www.wlug.org.nz/PDF flyer you can download below with more information. These talks are for the benefit of not-for-profit organizations and the communities they serve. Linux, OpenOffice.org and other Free/Open Source Software applications are being used more and more by not-for-profits due to lower cost, no licensing hassles, and the high quality of the software. OpenOffice.org has a page here dedicated to the ways non-profits can benefit from using it's software: http://why.openoffice.org/why_nfp.html These talks are open to WLUG members, we are a not-for-profit incorporated society after all. Linux users value the empowerment and freedom the software gives them. This is an opportunity to spread the word about our group to people who share these values. If your an employee or a volunteer or associated with a non-profit in anyway, these presentations are intend for you. If you know someone who may be interested in this talk, or there is someone involved with a non-profit you've been wanting to talk to about using Free Software, this is your opportunity. If you would like to attend please send an rsvp to: john(a)nimhq.net. Download OpenOffice.org for non-profits flyer (http://nimhq.net/wiki/lib/exe/fetch.php?media=openofficetalk-12-03.pdf)

Greetings all, On Thursday, 12 March, WLUG will be co-sponsoring several talks on OpenOffice.org repeated throughout the day at St. Paul's Methodist Center in Hamilton. Our presenter will be Graham Lauder. Graham is the marketing contact for OpenOffice.org in New Zealand. Last year he gave an excellent presentation at our Software Freedom Day event. NZCS Industry Consultation Workshop on Professional Certification
by David Hallett 23 Feb '09

23 Feb '09

NZCS Consultation Workshop on Professional Certification 11 March 2009: 5:00pm - 7:30pm The Bill Gallagher Hub Wintec City Campus (Gate 5) Anglesea Street, Hamilton This is your chance to have your say about the upcoming Professional Certification Programme. Certification Programme NZCS is in the process of designing and implementing a Professional Certification Programme for ICT Professionals. This internationally-aligned certification has the potential to redefine our profession, and put ICT on equal footing with other professions, such as Accountancy, Medicine and Engineering. "Professional Certification" is the cornerstone of a profession, and helps define and recognise true professionals. This is an overarching certification and is NOT the same as technical certifications; ie it is similar to "Chartered Accountant" or "Chartered Engineer" certifications for those professions rather than technical certifications (such as Microsoft or Cisco certs), although technical certifications are aligned with it. Certification Workshops This facilitated interactive workshop is your chance to not just hear about the detail of how this programme will work, but to provide significant feedback into the process as well. Senior NZCS staff will work through the details step by step then lead discussion around why particular routes have been chosen and decisions made, other options available, and what the participants believe are the best options. Who's invited? Everyone is welcome. Professional Certification is for the entire sector - not just existing NZCS members - and we encourage everyone to come along and get involved. Consequently, please pass this invitation along to anyone you believe may be interested in attending. The full model will be released at the beginning of March and sent to everyone on the NZCS Mailing List. In the meantime, please visit http://www.nzcs.org.nz/certification for more information, particularly the "Certification Update" document and Frequently Asked Questions. Registration is essential. Places will be filling fast, and registration is necessary for catering and logistic purposes. To register, simply register at the link below. Registration is free. http://www.nzcs.org.nz/events/waikato_bop/21-NZCS_Consultation_Workshop_on_… Regards, David Hallett, BSc, MNZCS Pulsar Computer Solutions Ltd P.O. Relay for Life March 7, 2009
by Liz 19 Feb '09

19 Feb '09

Okay the Relay for Life is coming up and James suggested that we put a group together to help raise our profile and also help those with Cancer. Now James has had a few things crop up and is unable to help out, however there are a few others of us keen to put together a group. You can find more details about it here http://www.relayforlife.org.nz/index/event?EventID=35 Its on March 7, 2009 Key points: * Teams consist of 10 or more: a Team Captain is elected, a Team name selected, and members submit a registration fee which will vary according to where the event is being held. Teams are encouraged to set and achieve their own FUNdraising goals in advance of the Relay and to be as creative as they wish about how they will walk, stroll or run around the track. FUNdraising can be achieved on either an individual basis or as a team. * At least one member of the team should be on the track for the duration of Relay to keep the baton passing. They are encouraged by their supporters and the electric and celebratory atmosphere that is created by the trackside entertainment and the vibrancy of everyone camping together overnight. * After you have registered you will receive a thank you confirmation, a login and password and access to the team captain and team member pages. * Cost $15 per person + whatever fund raising we can make So can I have a show of hands please who would like to help out. Liz ps. Yes this is completely un linux related, however i figure it gets the name noticed, we may be able to get some media coverage, and its good PR

Hello, Just wondered if anyone was using KDE 4.2 and had success getting Akonadi to access their mail and display it in Kmail. I can access an address boo k( via Kontact) to display via Akonadi; and stop and start the Akonadi service without errors. I have it connecting to a few IMAP email accounts but nothing actually get displayed in Kmail. I've tried Mailody http://www.mailody.net but that doesn't seem to connect to Akonadi yet. Perhaps its not functional in Kubuntu 8.10 yet? http://pim.kde.org/akonadi/ Anyone having success or similar experiences. Chris

A total of twelve architectures are supported: Sun SPARC (sparc), HP Alpha (alpha), Motorola/IBM PowerPC (powerpc), Intel IA-32 (i386), IA-64 (ia64), HP PA-RISC (hppa), MIPS (mips, mipsel), ARM (arm, armel), IBM S/390 (s390), and AMD64 and Intel EM64T (amd64). Debian GNU/Linux 5.0 "Lenny" adds support for Marvell's Orion platform which is used in many storage devices. Supported storage devices include the QNAP Turbo Station series, HP Media Vault mv2120, and Buffalo Kurobox Pro. Additionally, "Lenny" now supports several Netbooks, in particular the Eee PC by Asus. "Lenny" also contains the build tools for Emdebian which allow Debian source packages to be cross-built and shrunk to suit embedded ARM systems. Debian GNU/Linux 5.0 "Lenny" includes the new ARM EABI port, "armel". This new port provides a more efficient use of both modern and future ARM processors. As a result, the old ARM port (arm) has now been deprecated. This release includes numerous updated software packages, such as the K Desktop Environment 3.5.10 (KDE), an updated version of the GNOME desktop environment 2.22.2, the Xfce 4.4.2 desktop environment, LXDE 0.3.2.1, the GNUstep desktop 7.3, X.Org 7.3, OpenOffice.org 2.4.1, GIMP 2.4.7, Iceweasel 3.0.6 (an unbranded version of Mozilla Firefox), Icedove 2.0.0.19 (an unbranded version of Mozilla Thunderbird), PostgreSQL 8.3.6, MySQL 5.0.51a, GNU Compiler Collection 4.3.2, Linux kernel version 2.6.26, Apache 2.2.9, Samba 3.2.5, Python 2.5.2 and 2.4.6, Perl 5.10.0, PHP 5.2.6, Asterisk 1.4.21.2, Emacs 22, Inkscape 0.46, Nagios 3.06, Xen Hypervisor 3.2.1 (dom0 as well as domU support), OpenJDK 6b11, and more than 23,000 other ready-to-use software packages (built from over 12,000 source packages). With the integration of X.Org 7.3 the X server autoconfigures itself with most hardware. Newly introduced packages allow the full support of NTFS filesystems and the use of most multimedia keys out of the box. Support for Adobe(R) Flash(R) format files is available via the swfdec or Gnash plugins. Overall improvements for notebooks have been introduced, such as out of the box support of CPU frequency scaling. For leisure time several new games have been added, including puzzle games as well as first-person shooters. Also notable is the introduction of "goplay", a graphical games browser offering filters, search, screenshots and descriptions for games in Debian. The availability and updates of OpenJDK, GNU Java compiler, GNU Java bytecode interpreter, Classpath and other free versions of Sun's Java technology, into Debian GNU/Linux 5.0 allow us to ship Java-based applications in Debian's "main" repository. Further improvements in system security include the installation of available security updates before the first reboot by the Debian Installer, the reduction of setuid root binaries and open ports in the standard installation, and the use of GCC hardening features in the builds of several security-critical packages. Various applications have specific improvements, too. PHP for example is now built with the Suhosin hardening patch. For non-native English speaking users the package management systems now support translated package descriptions and will automatically show the description of a package in the native language of the user, if available. Debian GNU/Linux can be installed from various installation media such as DVDs, CDs, USB sticks and floppies, or from the network. GNOME is the default desktop environment and is contained on the first CD. Other desktop environments - KDE, Xfce, or LXDE - can be installed through two new alternative CD images. Again available with Debian GNU/Linux 5.0 are multi-arch CDs and DVDs supporting installation of multiple architectures from a single disc; and this release adds Blu-ray Discs, allowing the archive for an entire architecture to be shipped on a single BD. In addition to the regular installation media, Debian GNU/Linux can now also be directly used without prior installation. The special images used, known as live images, are available for CDs, USB sticks, and netboot setups. Initially, these are provided for the amd64 and i386 architectures only. The installation process for Debian GNU/Linux 5.0 has been improved in many ways: among many other improvements, support for installation from more than one CD or DVD has been restored, firmware required by some devices can be loaded by using removable media, and installations via Braille display are supported. The installer boot process has also received much attention: a graphical menu can be used to choose front-ends and desktop environments, and to select expert or rescue mode. The installation system for Debian GNU/Linux has now been translated to 63 languages. Debian GNU/Linux can be downloaded right now via bittorrent (the recommended way), jigdo or HTTP; see Debian GNU/Linux on CDs [1] for further information. It will soon be available on DVD, CD-ROM and Blu-ray Disc from numerous vendors [2], too. Upgrades to Debian GNU/Linux 5.0 from the previous release, Debian GNU/Linux 4.0 (codenamed "Etch") are automatically handled by the aptitude package management tool for most configurations, and to a certain degree also by the apt-get package management tool. As always, Debian GNU/Linux systems can be upgraded painlessly, in place, without any forced downtime, but it is strongly recommended to read the release notes [3] for possible issues, and for detailed instructions on installing and upgrading. The release notes will be further improved and translated to additional languages in the weeks after the release. 1: http://www.debian.org/CD/ 2: http://www.debian.org/CD/vendors 3: http://www.debian.org/releases/lenny/releasenotes Dedication ---------- Debian GNU/Linux 5.0 "Lenny" is dedicated to Thiemo Seufer, a Debian Developer who died on December 26th, 2008 in a tragic car accident. Thiemo was involved in Debian in many ways. He has maintained several packages and was the main supporter of the Debian port to the MIPS architectures. He was also a member of our kernel team, as well as a member of the Debian Installer team. His contributions reached far beyond the Debian project. He also worked on the MIPS port of the Linux kernel, the MIPS emulation of qemu, and far too many smaller projects to be named here. Thiemo's work, commitment, broad technical knowledge and ability to share this with others will be missed. Thiemo's contributions will not be forgotten. The high standards of his work make it hard to pick up. About Debian ------------ Debian GNU/Linux is a free operating system, developed by more than a thousand volunteers from all over the world who collaborate via the Internet. Debian's dedication to Free Software, its non-profit nature, and its open development model make it unique among GNU/Linux distributions. The Debian project's key strengths are its volunteer base, its dedication to the Debian Social Contract, and its commitment to provide the best operating system possible. Debian 5.0 is another important step in that direction. The plugin takes advantage of the video codecs that Microsoft provides for Moonlight, Novell's open source implementation of Microsoft's Silverlight rich Internet application framework. Moonlight 1.0, which was officially released Wednesday<http://arstechnica.com/open-source/news/2009/02/moonlight-10-brings-silverl…>, automatically downloads a proprietary codec pack from Microsoft in order to provide Linux users with legally licensed support for Microsoft's video formats. Bockover's plugin uses the NPAPI to register itself as the default consumer of Windows Media content and then, when it is invoked by the browser, uses Moonlight to embed a Silverlight-based streaming video player—which he wrote entirely in XAML and JavaScript—in the page to handle WMV. On Qo'noS, software developers undertake an intensive course in combat programming before they are cleared for active duty. The tlhIngan traditions have long known one truth holds true for both glory in battle and software development: bIlujDI' yIchegh()Qo'; yIHegh()! It is better to die() than to return() in failure. For too long, Perl has been a pujwI', and unsuitable for use by true warriors. In this talk we will show how the new autodie pragma can help you to code with batlh! On Speaking - _Jacinta Richardson_ You've been to *those* talks. The kind where the title first drew your attention, the abstract made you go wow, and you were so excited you took afront seat. Then the speaker went to their first slide and it was so full of text (15 bullet points!) and you just knew they were going to spend the next ten minutes talking about what you've just read in two. Worse, being up the front, you can't easily leave and it'd be rude to pull out your laptop... Don't be one of those speakers. No matter how technically brillant your talk, it's worth nothing at all if you can't keep your audience interested. This (short) talk will cover a whole bunch of tricks you can use to get your audience's attention and keep it. Better yet, if you use these ideas there's a good chance people will remember *what* you spoke about and will attend your future talks as well. Perl for noobs

Hi all. I'm working on SEOing a website for a client and part of the site is perl based. I have need of a good reference/tutorial/beginners-guide-to book on perl for a short term borrow (I prefer hard-copy manuals to the web where possible) to get me up to speed so that I can optimise this site without causing headaches for the client. Can anyone help out? I've had a quick glance through the WLUG library and can't seem to find anything (I'm gonna have another in-depth look but I don't recall seeing any books on Perl in there and I know I haven't ordered any recently. Installing Open Office 3.0
by Glenn Stuart Morrissey 30 Jan '09

30 Jan '09

hi there all I have just downloaded Open Office version 3.0 (64bit) onto my acer (Im running Ubuntu 8.04 Hardy). I was expecting a program that would install the applications on my computer but there wasn't one. I attempted to run synaptic Package Manager to pick up the downloaded DEBS packages, but it doesn't appear to have recognised the newer packages, only the older 1:2.4.1 packages. There is a update script, but I cant even begin to understand it. Is there anyone who has experienced this? Glenn Morrissey.

nut and virtualbox
by Glenn Ramsey 28 Jan '09

28 Jan '09

Hi, Recently on my Ubuntu 8.04 box the UPS monitor 'nut' stopped working. I just tracked down the problem and thought I'd mention it in case anyone else has the same issue, and hopefully someone might suggest a better solution than mine. I had installed Sun's version of virtualbox and it made vboxusers the group of all the /dev/bus/usb/* nodes (not sure if the standard version also does this). This meant that my UPS which is a USB type was not accessible to nut since it expects the group to be nut. I have worked around this by adding the nut user to the vboxusers group. I assume the issue is caused because in /etc/udev/rules.d/ the nut rule is at 52 but the virtualbox rule is at 60, which reconfigures what the nut rule did. I could also fix this by commenting out the USB rule for virtualbox but I don't really like having non standard configuration because inevitably some future update will break something. Is there some other way to fix this or should I report it as a bug? Glenn -- Glenn Ramsey <glenn(a)componic.co.nz> 07 8627077 http://www.componic.co.nz

These ports have matured significantly over the past twelve months and are beginning to approach the point where they are robust enough for general use. The open source KDE desktop environment, which is one of the two most popular Linux desktop stacks, underwent a significant transformation during the transition to version 4. Many parts of the environment were written from scratch and large parts of the underlying development infrastructure were overhauled. One of the major changes that accompanied this transition was the adoption of Qt 4, the next major version of KDE's underlying toolkit. Qt licensing changes that coincided with the launch of Qt 4 made it possible for the KDE developers to port the desktop to Windows and Mac OS X. The porting effort was also greatly simplified by KDE's adoption of the CMake build system. I've been asked to recommend a system for an 80-yr old first time user living in the South Island. My first choice would be naked DSL, VOIP phone, Ubuntu. However, there may be constraints like dialup access only. Do you have any "off the cuff" alternative solutions/suggestions? Michael

LCA2010 in NZ
by John Billings 23 Jan '09

23 Jan '09

It was just announced that Wellington will host the next years LCA. www.penguinsvisiting.org.nz I couldn't be happier having just attended my first conference and being able to confirm what an unbelievable experience it ss. There is an amazing amount of work that goes into putting on the conference so I look forward to seeing if wlug can assist in some way. A thought I had today was helping to fund members to go if they are interested. I'll be discussing that idea with the committee this year and keeping in touch with the lca10 team. Anyhow greetings from Hobart, I didn't forget about WLUG while I was here and have a few leads on presenters for the next year. Best, John

Fwd: Thursday Curry Night

---------- Forwarded Message ---------- Subject: Thursday Curry Night Date: Thursday 22 January 2009 From: Peter Bryant <p.repliesignored(a)rimuhosting.com> To: wlug(a)list.waikato.ac.nz Hi. Curry this afternoon anyone? On Thursday afternoon the RimuHosting guys normally gather at the office; drink a beer or two; talk about the latest goings on in the Linux universe; how rubbish all the current US tv programs (excepting BSG and FOTC) are; and do a tackle-by-pass analysis of the RimuHosting Rebooter's previous night's 5-a-side soccer performance. Since John is away at Linux conf we've voted to go do a curry instead. And since curries and Thursday's and technology seem to have a certain correlation (albiet one that appears to be 404 http://hamilton.thursdaynightcurry.com/) we're opening the invite to any geeks/IT folks who'd like to join us. Liz & Paul, Ivan Meridith, David Hallett, Carl Jones, Glenn Enright and I will be there at least. Hello India, 76 Alpha St, Cambridge. From 5PM. (From 4PM till they open at 5 we'd likely be next door at the Stables bar). We'll probably be there till 7PM for latecomers. Just this one night only: Thurs 22 Jan. Just show up. Or feel free to ping me via IM per http://rimuhosting.com/support/aboutrh.jsp Regards, Peter http://rimuhosting.com -------------------------------------------------------

Simon Phipps in NZ

Simon Phipps, head of Open Source Projects at Sun is in NZ on the 25th and 26th of this month. He's speaking in Wellington 5 pm on Monday the 26th. Is there a possibility that an engagement could be organised at Waikato Uni for him. He is a brilliant speaker and has a wealth of knowledge and opinion on Open Source in general. I'd be prepared to do any donkey work required. Obviously it would have to be a morning session on the Monday or evening on sunday to allow him to get to Wellington. -- Graham Lauder, OpenOffice.org MarCon (Marketing Contact) NZ http://marketing.openoffice.org/contacts.html INGOTs Assessor Trainer (International Grades in Office Technologies) www.theingots.org OOoGear: For the Well dressed OOo Advocate http://ooogear.co.nz

Radeon HD 3450 Graphics Card and a Acer 22" LCD Screen
by Glenn Stuart Morrissey 12 Jan '09

12 Jan '09

Hello All Hey I have a Radeon HD 3450 Graphics Card and a Acer 22" LCD Screen. When I enable the Radeon restricted driver, the desktop area is now larger than my screen are abut most of it is not my background image but black screen. I wanted to enable the driver to run flightgear, but its just so damn ugly with big black bands of solid black that I can stand it no longer and disable the Radeon driver. When I do that I get my normal desktop back that does not scroll beyond the limits of the screen, but flightgear becomes completely unrunable due to it becoming agonisingly slow. Is there anything that i can do without having to replace this graphics card? Glenn Morrissey.

Mounting and FSTAB entries

Hi everyone I have a question about drives being mounted automatically when Ubuntu (or any Linux system) boots. I have a 160 Gb drive (/dev/sda1) that I have manually mounted in my /usr/local directory. Network Configuration
by Glenn Stuart Morrissey 01 Jan '09

01 Jan '09

Hey all I have tried unplugging the network cable from the back of the machine and re-plugging it in, I have used a different port on my switch, which I have previously used and know it works well. Firts thing i did was ping 192.168.0.1 (my internet sharing machine), and was told that the network was unreachable. I have tried using a fixed ip address (192.168.0.5 and 255.255.255.0 subnet mask), still no joy. Network is unreachable. So, after this, I tried with the command sudo ethtool eth0, which returned with the output: glenn(a)glenn-amd1: [sudo] password for glenn: sudo:ethtool:command not found. glenn(a)glenn-amd1: This is the directory /etc/network glenn(a)glenn-amd1:~$ cd /etc glenn(a)glenn-amd1:/etc$ cd network glenn(a)glenn-amd1:/etc/network$ ls if-down.d if-post-down.d if-pre-up.d if-up.d interfaces glenn(a)glenn-amd1:/etc/network$ cat interfaces auto lo iface lo inet loopback I then tried removing the interfaces file, in the event that I could start over, but still no luck. when I run dhclient I get: glenn(a)glenn-amd1:/etc/network$ sudo dhclient Internet Systems Consortium DHCP Client V3.1.1 Copyright 2004-2008 Internet Systems Consortium. Fwd: [FSF] Free Software Foundation Files Suit Against Cisco For GPL Violations
by Bruce Kingsbury 14 Dec '08

14 Dec '08

Oh dear. Any [CiscoNut]s want to comment on this? Linz? ---------- Forwarded message ---------- From: Brett Smith <brett(a)fsf.org> Date: 2008/12/12 Subject: [FSF] Free Software Foundation Files Suit Against Cisco For GPL Violations To: info-press(a)gnu.org, info-fsf(a)gnu.org, info-gnu(a)gnu.org ## Free Software Foundation Files Suit Against Cisco For GPL Violations BOSTON, Massachusetts, USA -- Thursday, December 11, 2008 -- The Free Software Foundation (FSF) today announced that it has filed a copyright infringement lawsuit against Cisco. The FSF's complaint alleges that in the course of distributing various products under the Linksys brand Cisco has violated the licenses of many programs on which the FSF holds copyright, including GCC, binutils, and the GNU C Library. In doing so, Cisco has denied its users their right to share and modify the software. Most of these programs are licensed under the GNU General Public License (GPL), and the rest are under the GNU Lesser General Public License (LGPL). Both these licenses encourage everyone, including companies like Cisco, to modify the software as they see fit and then share it with others, under certain conditions. One of those conditions says that anyone who redistributes the software must also provide their recipients with the source code to that program. The FSF has documented many instances where Cisco has distributed licensed software but failed to provide its customers with the corresponding source code. "Our licenses are designed to ensure that everyone who uses the software can change it," said Richard Stallman, president and founder of the FSF. "In order to exercise that right, people need the source code, and that's why our licenses require distributors to provide it. We are enforcing our licenses to protect the rights that everyone should have with all software: to use it, share it, and modify it as they see fit." "We began working with Cisco in 2003 to help them establish a process for complying with our software licenses, and the initial changes were very promising," explained Brett Smith, licensing compliance engineer at the FSF. "Unfortunately, they never put in the effort that was necessary to finish the process, and now five years later we have still not seen a plan for compliance. As a result, we believe that legal action is the best way to restore the rights we grant to all users of our software." "Free software developers entrust their copyrights to the FSF so we can make sure that their work is always redistributed in ways that respect user freedom," said Peter Brown, executive director of the FSF. "In the fifteen years we've spent enforcing our licenses, we've never gone to court before. We have always managed to get the companies we have worked with to take their obligations seriously. But at the end of the day, we're also willing to take the legal action necessary to ensure users have the rights that our licenses guarantee." The complaint was filed this morning in United States District Court for the Southern District of New York by the Software Freedom Law Center, which is providing representation to the FSF in this case. The case is number 08-CV-10764 and will be heard by Judge Paul G. Gardephe. A copy of the complaint is available at <http://www.fsf.org/licensing/complaint-2008-12-11.pdf>. ### About the FSF The Free Software Foundation, founded in 1985, is dedicated to promoting computer users' right to use, study, copy, modify, and redistribute computer programs. The FSF promotes the development and use of free (as in freedom) software -- particularly the GNU operating system and its GNU/Linux variants -- and free documentation for free software. The FSF also helps to spread awareness of the ethical and political issues of freedom in the use of software, and its Web sites, located at fsf.org and gnu.org, are an important source of information about GNU/Linux. Donations to support the FSF's work can be made at <http://donate.fsf.org>. Its headquarters are in Boston, MA, USA. ### About the GNU General Public License (GNU GPL) The GNU General Public License (GPL) is a license for software. When a program is released under its terms, every user will have the freedom to share and change it, no matter how they get it. The GPL is the most popular free software license in the world, used by almost three quarters of all free software packages. The FSF recently updated the license to address new concerns in the free software community; version 3 of the GPL (GPLv3) was released on June 29, 2007. ### About the GNU Operating System and Linux Richard Stallman announced in September 1983 the plan to develop a free software Unix-like operating system called GNU. GNU is the only operating system developed specifically for the sake of users' freedom. See <http://www.gnu.org/gnu/the-gnu-project.html>. In 1992, the essential components of GNU were complete, except for one, the kernel. When in 1992 the kernel Linux was re-released under the GNU GPL, making it free software, the combination of GNU and Linux formed a complete free operating system, which made it possible for the first time to run a PC without non-free software. This combination is the GNU/Linux system. For more explanation, see <http://www.gnu.org/gnu/gnu-linux-faq.html>. ### Media Contacts Brett Smith Licensing Compliance Engineer Free Software Foundation +1 (617) 542 5942 x18 <brett(a)fsf.org> ### _______________________________________________ info-fsf mailing list info-fsf(a)gnu.org http://lists.gnu.org/mailman/listinfo/info-fsf -- This email is for the intended recipient only. Calender software
by Glenn Ramsey 14 Dec '08

14 Dec '08

Hi, Does anyone know of software that will allow you to make a calender using your own pictures that can be printed out? I have searched a bit but the results are swamped by schedule/meeting type calender software. I am aware of a command line app that generates calenders in postscript that I used a while back but I can't remember a) what it was called and b) whether it could add a picture. Anyone have any ideas? Cheers Glenn -- Glenn Ramsey <glenn(a)componic.co.nz> 07 8627077 http://www.componic.co.nz

Linksys (CISCO) has a long history of conflicted emotions over OSS. Sveasoft and OpenWRT and others have provided work around firmwares for Linksys products. hey all I have a dell laptop (Inspiron 3200) running Ubuntu 5.10 (very well to I might add, not like the 64bit Ubuntu 8.04 on my acer). Anyhow, when I want to look at files on that machine via. LAN, I am presented with a password dialog box. When I enter my password that I use as admin on that machine, It tells me that the password is wrong. Can anyone tell me where in the the filesystem is the file that contains the passwords, that I can edit with GEDIT? Glenn

cups driver for dcp-115c
by Glenn Stuart Morrissey 23 Nov '08

23 Nov '08

hi all Im trying to get my Brother DCP-115C multifunction printer to work under Linux ubuntu 8.04. Upon trying to get my DCP-115c to work, I have consulted the brother website: http://solutions.brother.com/linux/sol/printer/linux/cups_drivers.html#2 It reccommends that users of the DCP-115c use the MFC-210C package, however, I cannot get the brother MFC-210C package to install' because when I do it comes up with the 'wrong architecture - i386' error message. Upon further reading of the page I read the following for AMD 64bit users: "For AMD64 bit users: Our CUPS drivers and CUPS wrapper drivers have been developed and optimised for 32 bit Linux distributions, a list of which can be found here: http://solutions.brother.com/linux/sol/printer/linux/linux_config_list2.html However, if you are using an AMD64 bit distribution, we recommend you try copying the file named "brlpdwrapper" from /usr/lib/cups/filter to /usr/lib64/cups/filter." I have checked my /usr/lib/cups/filter directory and discovered that there was no file named "brlpdwrapper'. No surprises there, since the MFC-210C package would not install. Any suggestions? Glenn.

CPS
by Glenn Stuart Morrissey 20 Nov '08

20 Nov '08

Hi Bruce Should explain that I am running Ubuntu 7.04 on my Asus Laptop. Ok, when I go to the add printer setting in the administration menu, When I click on add new printer, it reads the CUPS database and shows that the two printers that I have connected to the Asus via. USB are detected. One being the Brother DCP-115c and the other is my little Xerox Phaser 3115. When I select the Brother printer and click on Forward, it shows in the manufacturers box at the top Brother..which is good. Underneath is the model of printer..cannot see DCP 115c in the menu. According to the Brother website, I should be using the MFC-210 Debian driver (Is this correct..?). Which also isn't listed. Ok, if I need to install CSH, where can I find this package and how do I install it (bearing in mind that I am going to have to transfer any drivers to the machine via. USB stick since I dont't as yet have the network operational on the Asus. Please excuse my ignorance as I have NO experience with CUPS or printing documents in a linux OS environment. T Thanks so much for your help thus far. Glenn.

"Originally, Linux (and the GNU tools and libraries that run on it) was not built with a single authentication mechanism in mind. As a result of this, Linux application developers generally took to creating their own authentication scheme. Hey Daniel Thanks for the great advise on ic/ppp settings. I had my old win 98 machine that I do my maths work on and it had a modem, so i thought id give it a bash with your instructions in your emails. I had to consult a website http://www.annoyances.org/exec/show/ics98, turns out that I had to install netBEUI and install ICS from the win 98 add new programs menu, but once that was done, my linux acer and my linux dell both had good connections. I had to remove the static IP address in my Vista machines network card settings, but once i had, it connected too. So thank you for all your help, and to the other members of WLUG who helped me out. Now I have to find an old PCMCIA network card for my old Dell 133 Laptop, or a serial network connection if there is such a thing Cheers all Glenn.

Re: [wlug] Administrative tasks crippled?
by GJB 09 Nov '08

It could be something to do with setting the software repositories correctly before starting these managers up. I think there should be something called "Sources" or similar on the system menu. It may need these set right before first starting. Maybe just starting is sufficient to get some basic settings and repositories but needs to be restarted before they become effective. Just a theory. > -------- Original Message -------- > Subject: [wlug] Administrative tasks crippled? > From: Chakat Sandwalker <sandwalker(a)gmail.com> > Date: Sun, November 09, 2008 8:32 pm > To: Waikato Linux Users Group <wlug(a)list.waikato.ac.nz> > > > I've been using 8.10 since the second beta came out (I'd bought a new > laptop, and I didn't want to wait two weeks for the final version to be > released before I could install it), and it seems to be having some odd > issues. > > The first one is that Synaptic and related programs, such as the Update > Manager, stop responding when being started for the first time -- > Synaptic will load, but then stop responding before it can load the list > of packages. Ubuntu failing to install/work
by jaytee＠clear.net.nz 09 Nov '08

09 Nov '08

Hi All, Have tried to install Ubuntu 8.10 desktop 386 with a number of different c/d's First a rc then two final desktops including trying the live versions also an alternate install. They all have a common problem, booting to the welcome/login then crashing to a black or plain light brown blank screen The install appears to slow down as it progresses, this is particularly true of the alternate, the last few files take a long time to config/install. I thought that it may be a memory problem and increased the ram to 700+ however that made no difference at all. Someone suggested that my psu may be faulty but I have installed puppy linux in two or three times without a problem. Knoppix live works just fine Any help would be appreciated. Regards John

Not sure if this is helpful or not but Clearnet had a recent network collapse resulting in PPP dropping out completely to a large number of users. pppoe
by Glenn Stuart Morrissey 08 Nov '08

08 Nov '08

Hey Daniel, sorry to be unspecific, what I mean by "I cant access them" if that I see the icons for the machines on my network, but when I click on those machines, no files or directories of the machines that I am trying to access appear, like what you would see if you had a properly configured and set up network. Im using, or atleast trying to configure my pppoe to access the internet via my windows laptop, because the modem I have, according to the folks at linmodems.org, does not have 64bit support, and probably never will have, since the folks that manufacture my modem are not willing to release thier source code so that linux developers can compile drivers needed for its operation. As you will recall, I have a usb modem, which also doesnt have driver support, and is thus unavailable to use under linux. Also, with my Acer being only a couple of months old, it does not have a serial port that I may try connecting a serial modem to, so that option is also unavailable to me. I will install Samba on my Acer Linux desktop, and have already enabled sharing on my folders on my Windows Vista laptop, however, the problem that I have is that under Heron, I cannot get my pppoe settings to 'stick' as it were, as soon as I click on them, they deselect themselves and uncheck the pppoe box. This is what I am trying to investigate the cause of. This is all very frustrating but I am not going to give up because I believe in the principles behind Linux and the open source software community, I just have to do a heck of a lot of learning FAST. Cheers Glenn.

I made a silly parody song about geeks/computers/etc . Im so-so at singing, slightly worse at editing that with music. I made a parody song however which some people have said is funny and i should have some sort of 'video clip' to go with it on youtube. I dont suppose anyone here is into video editing at all and are bored enough to make something cool up? Liz Q

This Question remained unanswered at our meeting. Google gave this result however I do not have that line in my "about:config" so I am unsure if it works or not: This does not clear my browsing history in Firefox 3.0??? Posted by: Jon at August 31, 2008 6:19 AM Its true. Clearing private data in Firefox 3 won't clear the history in the URL bar. To do this, do the following: If you don't want RichResults keep track of where you went, in Firefox you need to enter about:config and then scroll down to: browser.urlbar.maxRichResults and change the default. The default setting is 12 and if you want nothing, you enter 0. ----- Original Message Follows ----- > A reminder, the WLUG Fixit Meeting is today. > > > ---------------------------------------------------------- > ------------ Saturday November 1st, 10:00 am to 4:00 pm > > We will be holding our SaturdayWorkshop at Te Whanau > PÅ«tahi > (http://zoomin.co.nz/nz/hamilton/enderley/-te+whanau+ptahi > /?place/full_map), the community church at the end of > Oxford Street. > > > We'll have the usual tables, power, various ISO's, > Internet, coffee and light lunch, etc. > > _______________________________________________ > wlug mailing list | wlug(a)list.waikato.ac.nz > Unsubscribe: > http://list.waikato.ac.nz/mailman/listinfo/wlug >

dead horse flogging
by Glenn Stuart Morrissey 30 Oct '08

30 Oct '08

I tried to get my Asus laptop (Vista) to talk to my Acer (Linux Ubuntu 8.04) but no joy. I can ping 192.168.0.1, which is the Asus's network address, but cant see a network connection in the places>network folder. I've tried both DHCP and Roaming. I had a look on the back of my Acer, and it hasnt got a serial port, nor a parallel port. My arm is getting sore from all this dead horse flogging. Glenn.

dead horse
by Glenn Stuart Morrissey 30 Oct '08

30 Oct '08

Hey all Thanks for all the good advise. You are all right, I am flogging a dead horse trying to get this internal PCI Modem working in my machine with 64Bit architecture. Could i instead of trying to get Ubuntu to talk with my pci modem, try and establish an internet connection through my Windows Vista Laptop via. my ethernet card and a 100Mb switch? The switch shows there is a connection between the two machines, as yet I have not configured a network as I don't know how. By and by, does anyone want my PCI modem? It works fine with Vista, and I'll give it away, heck, Ill even post it to you for free just to get rid of the thing.... Glenn.

I thin you will find that once you start using linux, that you will pick up the basics quicker then you think, but unfortunately without net access its a major pain, unfortunately more and more pcs are coming without serial ports any more (I bought a USB > Serial adapter of trademe the other day for $10 inc postage). Fortunately ethernet is plug and play, and wireless is getting pretty good. I doubt "win-modem support will ever get better as fewer and fewer people are using it. I think slamr is a dodgy package ... I've gotten the same errors on Tosh. A-106 laptop running Xubuntu. It's got its knickers in a twist trying to work with some level stuff Windows uses for the software modem. Thank the lord I don't need to use my modem very much anymore, I can't believe such a simple device evades a software fix ... but hey, you get what you pay for! > -------- Original Message -------- > Subject: [wlug] slamr architecture error > From: Glenn Stuart Morrissey <gmorrissey(a)kol.co.nz> > Date: Wed, October 29, 2008 10:10 pm > To: Waikato Linux Users Group <wlug(a)list.waikato.ac.nz> > > > After downloading and unzipping slamr 2.6.24-19, I ran setup and copied > down the output of the setup.sh. > > > glenn(a)glenn1:~/Desktop$ cd slamr-2.6.24-19-generic > glenn(a)glenn1:~/Desktop/slamr-2.6.24-19-generic$ sudo ./setup > installing drivers for kernel version 2.6.24-19-generic > driver=slamr > > Installing the Debian packages supporting autoloading > *dpkg: error processing > sl-modem-daemon_2.9.10+2.9.9d+e-pre2-5ubuntu4_i386.deb (--install): > package architecture (i386) does not match system (amd64)* > Errors were encountered while processing: > sl-modem-daemon_2.9.10+2.9.9d+e-pre2-5ubuntu4_i386.deb > > Copying over newer files > Making folder /lib/modules/2.6.24-19-generic/extra > Copying drivers to /lib/modules/2.6.24-19-generic/extra > Checking driver install > slamr.ko slusb.ko ungrab-winmodem.ko > Copying newer slmodemd to /usr/sbin/ > Checking slmodemd version. Read the Slamr.txt record, other *.txt files and the sample wvdial.conf . glenn(a)glenn1:~/Desktop/slamr-2.6.24-19-generic$ Looks like im going to have to wait for someone with a AMD64 system to compile slamr, so it can run on my hardware. I don't think changing the modem will achieve anything since the modem driver itself is written for 32 bit systems. Glenn.

Re: [wlug] Is anyone able to help me configure a USB modem in Ubuntu

hey all thanks for all the great information. I had a serial modem that came installed in the machine when I bought it a couple of months ago. Its a brand new computer and I couldnt get scanmodem to detect it, thats why I tried to install a USB modem instead. I can supply output of the scanmodem program if required. Thanks all Glenn.

Is anyone able to help me configure a USB modem in Ubuntu 8.04 Hardy Heon
by Glenn Stuart Morrissey 22 Oct '08

22 Oct '08

Hi there all Is anyone here able to help me configure a Lucent external usb modem? I know that Heron detects that there is a device, because when I run lsusb: lsusb Bus 001 Device 011: ID 047e:2892 Agere Systems, Inc (Lucent) and I have tried to run modprobe: sudo modprobe usbserial vendor=0x47e product=0x2892 but nothing appears to be happening??? I dont have a device manager installed, like I do on my Ubuntu 7.04 release, although I have downloaded the gnome device manager (gnome-device-manager-0.1) I wouldnt have a clue on how to install the package, remembering that I dont have internet access on this machine makes it a real pain, because there are drivers that I need for the display that I dont have. My querry on this matter is on the Ubuntu Forums: http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?p=5987714#post5987714 Please bear in mind that I am a complete novice with Linux and Ubuntu, but really REALLY want to get a working knowledge of it. Thank you Glenn Morrissey

"Especially in large projects, documenters, testers, artists, marketers and managers -- to say nothing of general end users -- have all become essential contributors. Increasingly, a FOSS software release is becoming a collaboration among people of different skill sets. Yet, despite this change, in many projects, non-developers are given second class treatment. In a large number of cases, they cannot become full members of the project, and are not allowed to vote." Testing! I just want to see what happens when you email the story from Google's RSS reader. Michael Sent to you by mikencolleen via Google Reader: The dying embers of Microsoft's IP claims against open source via CNET News.com on 10/20/08 Redmond continues to fan the flames of its IP claims against open source, but it sounds less inclined to defend them vigorously now that it's an active consumer of open source. Fwd: Linux takes a seat on Qantas' new superjumbo
by Ian McDonald 14 Oct '08

14 Oct '08

Experienced this system on multiple different Singapore Airline flights recently. Generally fairly good but multiple machines needing rebooting - seemed to be the proprietary system locking up rather than Linux as you could see the Linux kernel booting just fine! Systems were very slow on older planes 747/777 but faster on A380 but still some parts had badly written software as some parts were fast and some parts were slow (30 second wait after pressing a key). A380 has full OpenOffice installed and a USB socket so you can work on documents on your USB key. Tested it and it certainly worked fine! ---------- Forwarded message ---------- From: imcdnzl <ian.mcdonald(a)jandi.co.nz> Date: Wed, Oct 15, 2008 at 9:43 AM Subject: Linux takes a seat on Qantas' new superjumbo To: ian.mcdonald(a)jandi.co.nz Sent to you by imcdnzl via Google Reader: Linux takes a seat on Qantas' new superjumbo<http://computerworld.co.nz/news.nsf/news/C1160957CBF12890CC2574E200690BDA> via Computerworld <http://computerworld.co.nz/> on 10/14/08 Flight entertainment systems powered by Linux Things you can do from here: - Subscribe to Computerworld<http://www.google.com/reader/view/feed%2Fhttp%3A%2F%2Fwww.idg.net.nz%2Frss%…>using *Google Reader* - Get started using Google Reader<http://www.google.com/reader/?source=email>to easily keep up with *all your favorite sites* -- Web: http://wand.net.nz/~iam4/, http://www.jandi.co.nz Blog: http://iansblog.jandi.co.nz
