Re: [wlug] The dog ate my bootloader!
by Eric Light 10 Mar '10

10 Mar '10

Thanks for your link, Gregory. Turns out I didn't give enough information in my original post - and after thinking of the right terms, a Google search found the problem. I was affected by bug 477104, fix and cause here: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/grub2/+bug/477104 in case it will help someone. I was running Ubuntu Netbook Remix 9.10 via Wubi (critical missing info in my original email). Wubi + kernel update = broken grub2 & left at bootloader. In the future, I'll need to follow any major updates by running sudo update-grub2. If this happens to anyone else, I fixed it by running: > set root=(hd0,1) > loopback loop0 /ubuntu/disks/root.disk > set root=(loop0) > linux /boot/vmlinuz-2.6.31-17-generic root=/dev/sda1 loop=/ubuntu/disks/root.disk ro > initrd /boot/initrd.img-2.6.31-17-generic > boot Once Ubuntu booted successfully, I had to run sudo update-grub2 to prevent the issue from recurring at next boot. Obviously, the versioning will vary; I also had to rollback to the previous version of vmlinuz and initrd. I've seen comments that the first 2 lines aren't necessary, but I needed them on my system. Hope this helps someone out in the future! Cheers, - Eric

Photo archives

Hi All, Due to some awful archiving. I have around 1500 digital still images that have been duplicated triplicated or more in a number of folders,C/D's and DVD's on a number of drives. I would like to know if there is a way I can dump ALL the directories into one folder then run a "find dupes" type program that would ensure that I did not delete any of my original photos. Hi, I am one of the members of Aucklug, and noticed the excellent wiki that the Waikato lug runs. Would you guys be open to us sharing the wiki, adding a few more pages that are Aucklug specific, linked from http://wiki.linux.net.nz/AuckLUG I don't see any point re-inventing the wheel, and the wiki already has many great references to things like Linux, NZLUG, etc. I want to put up a page for a start with some venue information on it, and a page for the next presentation where people can add ideas, RSVP, etc. Regards Glen Ogilvie

Brother printer stopped working
by Glenn Ramsey 18 Feb '10

18 Feb '10

Hi, My Brother HL-2140 printer which has been working perfectly has suddenly stopped working. I'm using Kubuntu 8.04 on amd64 which I keep up to date and I guess it was due to a recent update, but I don't use it all that much so I don't know exactly when it got broken. I enabled debug logging in cups and it shows that something is seg faulting. The log is posted here: http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?p=8846976 Anyone have any advice about how to fix it? The dog ate my bootloader!
by Eric Light 16 Feb '10

16 Feb '10

Hi everyone, Well the subject line says it all... There was an update yesterday that came in for Ubuntu Netbook Remix (9.10). Downloaded, installed, rebooted, and now I just get dumped into Grub. Immediately before the Grub screen comes up, it quickly flashes something that MAY be the words "Try hdd(0,0) NTFS". Then I get the sh:grub> prompt. OK So I don't know anything about Grub or what I'm doing in it. I've typed ls and I get: (loop0), (hd0), and (hd0,1). I tried boot /vmlinuz, and I get "Error: no loaded kernel"; tried linux /vmlinuz, and I get "Error: wrong magic number". Not sure what else I should try. Does anyone have any advice to get my netbook up and running again? I'm back to Windows 7 Starter! (argh, argh, argh) Thanks in advance! Cheers, - Eric

Ge Force FX 5200
by Chris O'Halloran 15 Feb '10

15 Feb '10

Hello, I am looking to build a MythTV box for a friend using a satellite card to capture/watch/record Freeview. I've already got my own box working. Prior to HD, I understand the Nvidia GeForce FX5200 was considered a good graphics card and is infact what I use (more by luck than design). It has an TV-OUT RCA socket. Would anyone on the list have something like that spare that they would be willing to sell? If you wish to reply, please reply to me off list. Cheers, Chris

Linux Mint 8 (Helena) 32 bit tested
by Wayne Grimsey 15 Feb '10

15 Feb '10

Hey guys. If anyone's interested, I've installed Linux Mint Helena (32 bit) on my Compaq Presario Notebook. Decided that, since my Gloria was getting a bit buggy in regards to updates and sound, it was time to take the plunge. Helena runs like a dream, drivers and wireless work fine with no fuss. They've improved the general aesthetics. Additionally, you can now do OEM installations. They've also improved the layout of many menu's. You can also choose to ignore certain updates. Be interesting to see what other goodies I discover over the next few weeks. If anyone wants the ISO, just give me a yell, at the next Fix-It day. Self intro & Hamilton handmade Tux's
by Roger Sinel 05 Feb '10

05 Feb '10

Hiya, Just to introduce myself, I'm a expat Kiwi from Hamilton. I live and work in Stockholm Sweden with FOSS in a large RHEL environment. I'm also very involved in the FOSS community in Sweden. I'm back in Hamilton on Holiday and will come along to the fix it meeting tomorrow to show my face amongst the WLUG before we fly back next week. I've been luckily enough to get my mother to sew up a few soft toy Tuxes for me. And also a large on that I will use for Software Freedom Day 2010 and for other FOSS gatherings that I'm involved organizing. My mother is interested in sewing these Tuxes for the Linux community if there is any interest for them here. Please let me know if anybody is interested and keep it in mind as situations come up from time to time where tuxes really add that little bit extra to a FOSS event. Check out these pictures I just took of the two finished Tuxes. http://picasaweb.google.com/roger.sinel/KiwiTuxMadeInNewZealand?feat=direct… Looking forward to meeting some of you tomorrow. /roger -- Roger Sinel www.nordickiwi.com "The beginning of knowledge is the discovery of something we do not understand." Benq Scanner S2W 4300U...
by Zed 02 Feb '10

02 Feb '10

Using LinuxMint v8.0 Helena. Some time go I purchased one of these scanners, after I found through http://www.buzzard.me.uk/jonathan/scanners-usb.html that they work with Linux, and downloaded and installed sane-backends-1.0.19 and sane-frontends-1.0.14 as suggested. Xsane is installed, also. However, when I clicked on XSane to launch the scanner the following error appeared: Failed to open device 'snapscan:libusb:001:002': Invalid argument. A search for snapscan:libusb:001:002 does not find it but a libusb command in the Terminal shows that it is installed. At that time, and this is over a year ago, I decided not to bother about it and abandoned the idea. However, I recently came back to the problem - after all why have a scanner sitting on the desk if it doesn't work :-). So, I downloaded the HowTo on your website http://www.wlug.org.nz/Benq3300/4300ScannerSetup and carefully followed the directions. Regrettably the scanner still does not work. When I first ran xSane, the window opened. Clicked on Preview and the scanner sprang into action - well, it made noises as if something was going to happen - and then the xSane window closed. Ran xSane again and got the error message: Failed to open device 'snapscan:lisusb:002:00': Error during device I/O Entered the Terminal and did lusb, with the following result zed(a)zed-desktop ~ $ lsusb Bus 002 Device 004: ID 04a5:20b0 Acer Peripherals Inc. Trouble printing to a Fuji Xerox Workcentre 220
by Eric Light 31 Jan '10

31 Jan '10

Hi everyone, I've got a swanky new Fuji Xerox Workcentre 220. It's connected to my WinXP laptop via USB, which then shares it over Windows File & Print sharing to my network. For all connected Windows machines (x4) it's working fine. However for my EeePC (1005HA) running Ubuntu NBR 9.10, it won't print at all. There are no specific drivers for it. However the printer suggests that it does "PCL6/PostScript 3 Emulation", and I've tried both the Postscript and the PCL6 & PCL5e drivers. All of these choices make the printer warm up, but none of them actually end up in the printer printing anything. I've trawled the Internet, but may have been looking for the wrong thing. Does anyone have any suggestions? Cheers, - Eric

OpenSuSE DVDs
by Graham Lauder 31 Jan '10

31 Jan '10

I have some OpenSuSE 11.2 DVDs left over from the LCA Open Day if anyone wants one. They're dual layer DVD's and have both 64 and 32 bit versions and they can run both Gnome and KDE live sessions. As per usual for OpenSuSE DVDs it has Desktop, Server and Developer tools all on the DVD and no need for an internet connection to get a full production server or desktop or development environment up and running. (Nvidia Drivers for Compiz excepted) (Enlightment, XFCE and Windowmaker desktop environments also included) Put hand up and I'll bring some up to the next WLUG meeting, or I'll put them in the post if needed urgently! Question-- Android LUG?
by Luke Hutchison 21 Jan '10

21 Jan '10

Does anyone know if there is a Google Android User Group in NZ? I have been hacking on the Linux kernel and Java events framework for Android (for example, I got multi-touch scaling working on the original G1 Android phone: http://bit.ly/16VDI ). Android is a fun stack to hack on at the operating system level, the Java framework level, and the app level. By the way, sorry for the spam but I have a brand-new extra Google Nexus One cellphone (with 1GHz Snapdragon processor and high-res OLED screen) here in NZ, please reply to me directly off-list if you are interested. Backports
by Chris O'Halloran 14 Jan '10

14 Jan '10

Hello All, I am running Karmic Kooala Kubuntu 9.10 Recently I added the back-ports repository to install the latest version of Digikam and Amajoke, I mean Amarok. Well they both installed and then the update manager told mean about all the latest KDE goodness I could install so I upgraded. Well KDE-plasma now likes to hit 80-90% CPU usuage and is wearing out my cooling fans. Can I go back to a non-backports version of my machine? I still want ultimately to have the latest version of Digikam but revert everthing else, including Amarok to version 1.4 again. Is it a matter of disabling the backport repo and doing 'sudo apt-get upgrade' ? Any thoughts? Chris

Rsync and Samba
by Cameron Rangeley 21 Dec '09

21 Dec '09

Hi Guys I am running two RHEL boxes, each day I am rsyncing some data from my primary server to my secondary server. I am rsyncing the entire /home partition. On my primary server there are about 8 samba shares for data that the clients can access all the samba shares point to various sub-directories within /home. My issue is that on my secondary server I cant connect to the shares from a windows workstation. My smb.conf file is exactly the same as my primary server and to test I have created a test mount in /mnt/test and I can connect to that fine. It appears that the issue is all around the fact that these directories that have been created with rsync. My rsync command is: rsync -arzgopulv --delete /home root(a)192.168.9.2:/ My smbd.log file says: '/home/folder/folder/folder does not exist or permission denied when connecting to [akemail] Error was Permission denied. I can see the folder in samba I have forced the user as root and I have chmodded the folder to 777. Access from the console to these files and folders works fine. Has anyone got any other ideas that I can try? Thanks Cameron

Python syntax
by Chris O'Halloran 14 Dec '09

14 Dec '09

Hello all, Here is a bit of code that I am getting my head around. It's out of a book that I am using to teach myself matplotlib, a python library for making graphs etc. The following code is using an object-orientated approach in preparation for embedding the graph within an GUI application. <code> #!/usr/bin/env python # -*- coding: utf-8 -*- import matplotlib.pyplot as plt import numpy as np x = np.arange(0, 10, 0.1) y = np.random.randn(len(x)) fig = plt.figure() ax = fig.add_subplot(111) l, = plt.plot(x, y) t = ax.set_title('random numbers') plt.show() </code> The line l, = plt.plot(x, y) has got me slighty confused because l = plt.plot(x, y) also works, without the trailing comma after the l I was wondering if any Python coders might comment to the comma's significance. I've scanned my four books on Python and can't find any reference. Cheers, Chris

Knoppix
by jaytee＠clear.net.nz 11 Dec '09

11 Dec '09

Hello all, Here is a question from another forum that no one seems to be able to answer. Does any of our know what can be done as I have had similar issues with knoppix of late. Tried no acpi with difference.. Regards John Hi, I've had a copy of Knoppix for years. I think it is version 3, anyway it is several years old and works well. I thought i'd update it and so downloaded 6.2 CD. When it booted up it goes to a text interface.I looked through the options and it had a graphical version of firefox listed so I tried that and it started loading but then the monitor went into standby. So I then downloaded the DVD. It started booting, started loading the interface and the same happened. The monitor went into standby. It loads the first screen with the linux logo in the top left and starts loading things like Hal and Sound with a green loading bar. Then it had a couple of lines of text (root(a)....) Then it goes to a black sreen with the cursor in the top left and after a couple of seconds the monitor turns off. The disk is still loading. I've had a surf and tried a few cheatcodes (screen=800x600, vga=0, vsync=60 etc) but i'm not really sure what i'm doing. Is it a known issue and does anyone know how to fix it? __________________ Cheers, Degs

Openmoko Freerunner A6 for sale
by Matt Brown 06 Dec '09

06 Dec '09

Hi, Is anyone interested in buying one of the Openmoko open source phones to play with? I know they've been hard/expensive to get in NZ, so this may be your chance... I'm selling my Freerunner. I purchased it from Pulster over a year ago and used it for several months before I received an Android phone and sadly my Freerunner has been sitting gathering dust since then. I'd rather someone who had the time was using it for something useful, so I'm putting it on the market. It's in excellent condition: GTA02 A6 - Serial 8A8810247 - Original box - Charger with foreign adaptors - 512MB microSD card and SD card adapter No USB cable (missing in shipment from Pulster) No Stylus/Laser pen (lost) I purchased the phone for around 400 euro a year ago, and have barely used it. I'll consider any reasonable NZD offer for it. I'm in Hamilton until the end of the year and can deliver to the local area or arrange for you to pick up the phone. HP laptop power socket needed
by Bryce Utting 05 Dec '09

05 Dec '09

Hi all, Finally got around to poking around in my dead nx5000. just a wild guess here, but I kinda suspect that if a plug has 18+V on it yet the socket only meters at 0.56V across its terminals when the plug's in it, then there's possibly a -slight- chance the socket needs replacing... (especially since I noticed arcs from the socket shortly before it stopped booting) Anyone have any useful parts? should be able to get a photo up once I've charged some batteries. would prefer not to drop a DSE part in, since while the plug's a standard 2.5mm-ish one, the socket's got two ground lugs to each side, and are probably needed for structural reasons. (yep, will stop by Jaycar. would like to close it all back up reasonably soonish though so I can get my table back!) ta, butting

Digital Cameras and Linux
by Chris O'Halloran 03 Dec '09

03 Dec '09

Hello all, I know there are some photography enthusiasts on this list. I am considering purchasing a digital SLR camera. I bought a film based SLR camera about 6 years ago but it would seem it is time to move on. The previous camera was a Nikon F55 and I had purchased a few filters and a 300mm telephoto lens. Even though it was an entry level camera, I was generally happy with the quality of the images. In previous reading on this topic, I understand the opinion varies amongst manufacturers on the various file formats and how well they allow the RAW file formats to be extracted from the camera. The two brands I am mostly considering at this stage are Nikon and Canon. Would anyone care to comment if a Linux user is likely to have a preference for either and/or if there is another brand that is very Linux friendly? I like the idea of a camera that uses SD cards and possibly conventional batteries but that requirement isn't hard n fast. Additionally if there is some way to use my legacy 300m telephoto lens, that would also be cool but I'm resigned to it being incompatible. Thanks for any thoughts offered, just thought I'd ask. Cheers, Chris

performance difference between a swap partition vs a swap file >>>>>
by Narender 03 Dec '09

03 Dec '09

I have done a lot of research, but I do not have any real world experience so I'm hoping you can help me understand the real world differences in performance. The research tells me that if you create a swap file on an empty disk and on a OS using kernel 2.6 then the performance differences are minor, but that the swap partition is a slight favorite in terms of pure performance. Our Scenario: Raid 1 146GB partition 33GB Swap File created on / (Note: the swap file was created when the OS was built, so the hard drives were not full and they were very empty) Kernel 2.6 Best Regards N

AJAX and jQuery help please?
by James Pluck 27 Nov '09

27 Nov '09

Hi all! Is there anyone out there who is adept with jQuery, javascript and AJAX? I have an ajax call in the application that I am working on that is the root of a Heisenbug that is causing me some grief! I have pruned the call to the collowing code: <code> function addPublication ( pubID, pubName, pubCategories ){ alert ( "in addPublication" ); var xhr = $.ajax ({ url: "/publisher/ajax/addpub.php", type: "POST", data: ({ id: pubID, name: pubName, "categories[]": pubCategories }), success: function(){ alert ( "We're Back from addpublication" ); } }); alert ( "*" + xhr.responseText + "*" ); }; </code> The post that is generated from this is correct and if I manually send that post data to the php script I get the expected results (at the moment all the script does is generate an empty page with a "print_r" of the post data. However, the ajax call randomly returns correctly or returns with "error - undefined error." Firebug is distressingly unhelpful in that all it does is show the url in red in the console and no errors or anything! I have found on occasion that erasing the url and retyping it exactly will cause the bug to disappear but any editting of the js file after that will cause the bug to return. The ironic thing is that when I have the full function of the php script activated it actually does the task that it is supposed to do correctly - except that I have to refresh the page to see the result instead of the ajax refreshing the page properly. I can mess around with things under someones guidance and come up with positive results most times ( I own a hammer for those other times <g> ) any how. For what it is worth, my hand is up. All the best John........

Bad move!
by Michael McDonald 16 Nov '09

When my Linksys router/modem failed, I bought an Asus DSL-G31 router/modem. It's quite a nice unit and has wireless. In my naivety I thought a router/modem was a router/modem! Not so, it seems - I have a problem. I also have Linksys PAP2T telephone adapter connecting to a VOIP connection at Xnet. However, the Asus router seems to blocking the VOIP connection. Checking back on the Xnet website, I see that the only router/modems listed as being compatible with Xnet's service are Linksys models. The Asus has SIP enabled, but I presume that the PAP2T is not using SIP. Xnet tech suggested unlocking the PAP2T, going back to factory default settings, and re-provisioning the PAP2T. It seems that the re-provisioning has taken place as Line 1 has the correct telephone number. Does anyone have any suggestions? The simplest way out may to just to buy a Linksys router/modem. I notice that Xnet seems to have support for Asterisk (but there are no instructions for it). I've got a spare computer, so downloaded and installed AsteriskNOW. That was the easy part. I am completely bewildered about getting it configured! Michael

Fwd: [NZOSS-Openchat] Invitation to complete IT Vendor Capability Survey
by Bruce Kingsbury 16 Nov '09

16 Nov '09

Not sure if this already got crossposted, and I suspect most of us are also on the NZLUG list.. but ---------- Forwarded message ---------- From: Brenda Chawner <Brenda.Chawner(a)vuw.ac.nz> Date: 2009/11/13 Subject: [NZOSS-Openchat] Invitation to complete IT Vendor Capability Survey To: NZOSS Open Discussion List <openchat(a)lists.nzoss.org.nz> I would like to invite you to complete an online survey designed to find out what services New Zealand IT vendors can offer to support a free software desktop. Free software is software released under a license that supports the four essential software freedoms, which allow users to * run the program for any purpose (Freedom 0) * study the source code, and improve it to better meet their needs (Freedom 1) * distribute copies of the software to others (Freedom 2) * distribute modified versions of the software to others (Freedom 3) For more information about free software, please see: http://www.gnu.org/philosophy/free-sw.html The survey is being conducted by the New Zealand Open Source Society and the School of Information Management at Victoria University of Wellington as part of the Public Sector Remix project, which seeks to demonstrate the viability of free software for use by New Zealand government agencies. It includes questions about your current services, including * end user support and training, * desktop configuration management, and * server integration You are also asked to provide information about which free software packages are used within your organisation, and how people from your organisation contribute to free software projects. Before starting to complete the survey, you may find it useful to find out what free software packages other staff within your organisation use, and whether they contribute to the projects in any way. It should take you up to 45 minutes to complete the survey. The data you provide will be stored securely in a password-protected file for up to two years, and only the researchers will have access to it. The aggregated results will be shared with the government agencies who are participating in the Public Sector Remix project, and they may be presented at conferences such as GOVIS, or published in academic, professional, or industry journals. No organisations or individuals will be named in any presentations or publications that report on the results of this survey. A summary of the results will be published on the New Zealand Open Source Society website once the data is analysed; this is likely to be in early 2010. The survey starts at http://survey.publicsectorremix.org.nz/index.php?sid=87388&lang=en If you have any questions about the survey, please contact: Brenda Chawner brenda.chawner(a)vuw.ac.nz. windows thru Linux
by David Giles 15 Nov '09

Hi, I run Mandriva as my main operating system, but on a second computer I have windows 98 to run a small [windows only] accounting program. Can I join the computers together and operate the accounts program through Linux? The program will run on a Mack using virtual PC. Does linux have a similar program and would windows have to be loaded onto the computer? Regards, David

Hi Is there any way of creating a 'catchall' or a default account that all undelivered mail can go to ? eg if we have 3 user accounts (user1, user2, admin) already set up, but someone sends an email to user3(a)mydomain.com, can sendmail figure out that it doesn't match any existing users and deliver it to admin(a)mydomain.com ? Getting the keyboard and mouse back after a power cut
by Glenn Ramsey 04 Nov '09

04 Nov '09

Hi, I have a Dell laptop in a docking station running Kubuntu 8.10. After a short power cut the keyboard and mouse (ps/2) do not work. I can ssh into it but I'm not sure how to reinitialise the kdb and mouse. Have tried restarting kdm, restarting udev and removing and reloading the psmouse module (couldn't see a module that looked like it might have something to do with the keyboard), but that doesn't fix it. The only way I can currently do it is to reboot. Anyone know how to do this? Glenn -- Glenn Ramsey <glenn(a)componic.co.nz> 07 8627077 http://www.componic.co.nz

Fwd: [nzlug] Dialup on Slingshot
by Bruce Kingsbury 03 Nov '09

03 Nov '09

Can't remember who was having problems with dialup a couple of meetings back, but a similar issue has come up on the nzlinux mailing list so this information may be useful to someone. Or you can bring it along (again) to the saturdayworkshop end of year BBQ Nov 28th and we'll take another look at it. (useful ppp options down the bottom of the following mail) ---------- Forwarded message ---------- From: Graham Lauder <gl(a)openopportunities.co.nz> Date: 2009/10/22 Subject: Re: [nzlug] Dialup on Slingshot To: NZLUG Mailing List <nzlug(a)linux.net.nz> On Wednesday 21 October 2009 08:58:39 Mark Foster wrote: [...] > > Having been on the other side (Helpdesk'r for several years - including > for Slingshot ironically enough (though a very long time ago) - try it > from a helpdesk's POV. > > - Probably nil experience with Linux and linux software. > - Fault unable to be duplicated from a windows box? Agreed, toward that, I'm going to email the fix to them and the ppp/options file, you never know it may be useful to them. > > Anyone know any ISPs who explicitly provide Linux tech support? (And more > importantly, where that offer is not tied to the skills of one or two > individuals (aka SPOF's))? I'm not sure here but is /etc/ppp/options common to all distros and/or Desktop Environments. I'm using KDE and Kinternet and the assumption is that all distros running KDE should be the same. Does the Gnome desktop use the same location and options file? That's obviously significant because of Ubuntu's position in the market. If I'm going to help the Helpdesk'rs that would be useful for them to know. One of the advantages of course is that we're dealing with a text file. A text file looks the same in windows or whatever. Of course there are certain questions here, Does the user know how to open a terminal and run it as a superuser/root ? Does the user know how to use a text editor? Does the user know what KDE or Gnome is? Given that there are more and more "less than technical" endusers of Linux out there, affirmative answers to all of the above are not so much a given any more However assuming a reasonable level of knowledge a process could be: What's your Desktop environment: Gnome or KDE KDE: Open Konsole Do su Enter super-user password at request type kate at the prompt in the address field type /etc/ppp/options Gnome : Open terminal do sudo gedit Enter password at request in the address field type /etc/ppp/options then it's simply a matter of stepping through the text file. >From Johns mail In KDE on OpenSuSE > ============= lock (This one was already set) noauth (same here) defaultroute (wvdial does this by default in any case) ipcp-max-configure 65 (This doesn't appear to be necessary) ipcp-accept-local (uncomment this line) ipcp-accept-remote (uncomment this one as well) idle 600 (already set) > ============= So then, at least in my system receive-all (add this line) ipcp-accept-local (uncomment this line) ipcp-accept-remote (uncomment this one as well) That's a relatively easy fix. The question is, is /etc/ppp/options the same on other distros, particularly Ubuntu. It would be good to know before I ping this off to the Slingshot helpdesk. Any other comments? Karmic Koala
by Chris O'Halloran 02 Nov '09

02 Nov '09

Hi guys, I tried to be sensible and wait for other online reviews first but in the end I couldn't resist and just hit upgrade to Karmic Koola for a Kubuntu Jaunty Jackalope machine. The process worked flawlessly and I am impressed. It upgraded my virtual Windows XP machine (running on VirtualBox), keep Amarok 1.4 and didn't break Wine. Skype still works and the wireless configuration dialog is much improved. The Nvidia drivers were updated for the new kernel. And a few annoying bugs in Kontact are gone! That was the most painless update I've experienced. It still took about an hour a 800Kb/s ADSL connection and I had to answer a few questioned along the way but otherwise very impressed. Just though I'd share that. Cheers, Chris

Personalising Learning Environments with Quick Response (QR) Codes
by John Billings 20 Oct '09

20 Oct '09

Hi, There will be an interesting meeting next month presented by NZCS, Tuesday evening from 5:30 to 7pm, 10th November. WLUG members are invited to attend: http://www.nzcs.org.nz/events/waikato_bop/87-Personalising_Learning_Environ… It's a free event but please register. I originally approached Dr. John Clayton to give a talk to WLUG about the work he's done with Moodle in the past. I also asked if I could interview him for community radio, which we did last week. In the course of the interview, he told me his new work involves researching QR Codes in education, and we thought that might be an interesting topic for a presentation. Since we are having an AGM next month and it was too late to organize it this month, I pitched the talk over to David at NZCS and he's organized that now. The first part of my interview with John is available here, where he does talk about Moodle: http://newitmake.org.nz/podcasts/audio/show/21-episode-15-dr-john-clayton The second part, where he talks about QR Codes will be played on Community Radio Hamilton this Thursday, at 2pm and the podcast will be available soon. Cheers, John

Hi there If you feel like having a life-time email address @linux.com and a spare 250USD (150USD for the email address, 99USD/a for the Linux Foundation membership), then have a look here: http://www.linux.com/news/enterprise/biz-enterprise/127569-new-benefits-off… Student memberships are cheaper, only 25USD/a. Apparently, you do get cheaper deals at Lenovo, Dell and HP with that membership and also some other discounts. Check out the website mentioned above. by Tim Knapp 05 Oct '09

05 Oct '09

NEW ZEALAND PYTHON USER GROUP Media Statement October 5, 2009 IMMEDIATE RELEASE "How a programming language is changing the Web" The main keynote speaker at Kiwi PyCon 2009, Joel Burton, an internationally recognised trainer and presenter, will explain how the programming language Python is becoming the language of choice for developing websites due to its simplicity and flexibility. The conference will be held at the Canterbury Innovation Incubator in Christchurch on November 7th and 8th. Other tracks at the conference will include: GUI, Science & Math, Game, and Applications. The conference will also have a dedicated Web track, which will include presentations about many Python web technologies, such as: Django, Twisted, Zope 3, Grok, and Plone. The conference has attracted a lot of interest from many universities throughout the country and staff and students from Auckland, Massey, Canterbury, and Otago universities will be presenting regarding how they've used Python in their research. “As Christchurch has the reputation of being the Silicon Valley of New Zealand, its been really great to see a number of electronics companies in Christchurch support the event”, said Tim Knapp, the conference Director. Tait Electronics, a radio communications manufacturer, is a Gold sponsor for the event. “The positive response we've received from the IT community in New Zealand has been really encouraging” commented Mr. Knapp. “Really, no matter what industry your business is in, this conference will be of benefit to you.” Registration closes on October 23rd and registrations are limited. GUI frontend for pypdf
by Peter Reutemann 04 Oct '09

04 Oct '09

Hi there A couple of weeks ago, I needed to join two PDFs together into a single one on my Ubuntu box. Problem was, that I could only find command-line tools like pdftk to do the job, but no GUI frontend like pdftk_builder or guipdftk, which are only available for Windows. When I happened to come across the pypdf Python library (http://pybrary.net/pyPdf/) I told myself, maybe a little bit of Python-hacking could fill the void. Well, there you have it... pyPdf-GUI, a little pygtk and glade based Python frontend, released under the BSD license. And, since I thought this software might be useful to other people as well, you can find it here available for download: http://pypdfgui.fracpete.de/ On that (rather basic) website, you can download an Ubuntu 9.04 .deb package and a source archive (for other Linux flavors or older Ubuntu versions). One final note: this is the absolute first release, so expect some bugs to be lurking in the code. :-) Cheers, Peter -- Peter Reutemann, Dept. of Computer Science, University of Waikato, NZ http://www.cs.waikato.ac.nz/~fracpete/ Ph. +64 (7) 858-5174

wlug server status
by John Billings 03 Oct '09

03 Oct '09

To anyone using the WLUG server, Hoiho the blade hosting the home directory for user accounts, has a failing hard drive. Please don't keep any important data here, and if you do have something there now, this would be a good time to back it up. Today I was informed there is only about 600 MB of space left there. Most of the space is taken by some database backups, and I don't really see the point in removing them, when no one should be using this drive anyway. We have a replacement blade for hoiho installed which has a larger drive, but it's not plugged into the right port on the switch or something. Someone has to go to the datacenter to sort it out. Hopefully this month we will get someone up there, but we can't guarantee the drive won't fail before then. Just an FYI we are having an AGM 23rd Nov., and we will be proposing to add a sysadmin role in Rule 7 of the charter. This person would just be required to keep up with whats going on with the server, coordinate things, and make sure people are abiding the AUP. http://wlug.org.nz/WlugCharter http://wlug.org.nz/HoihoAcceptableUsePolicy Best, John

Software Freedom Day roundup
by Bruce Kingsbury 20 Sep '09

20 Sep '09

My first impression was that SFD was a disaster (entirely my fault of course!) because quite a few things went wrong and we were fairly disorganized, but others have told me I'm just being a pessimist and looking back it actually seems to have been pretty successful. We gave away 130 OpenDisc-lite CDs on eday, and at least another 100 OpenDisk-plus DVDs on SFD (I'm not sure how many we started with but over 100 and we've got very few left), about 60 Ubuntu CDs, we've got 38 feedback forms, Liz's photos look great, still waiting for others to get photos uploaded, and the video looks pretty good too (yay kino and being able to adjust the gamma). So a big thanks and well done to everyone who came along (and if you didn't, how about getting involved next year?!)

Upcoming WLUG committee meeting (1 week today)
by Meeting Reminder bot 20 Sep '09

As per the WLUG charter, please note that there is a WLUG executive committee meeting one week from today. If you wish to get an item on the agenda for this meeting, please email it to secretary(a)wlug.org.nz. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Committee meeting, location yet to be decided. Agenda: followup to SFD, things we got right and need to do again, things we got wrong and need to improve on. Graham has made some excellent suggestions for how we can do the event next year which we should discuss. Desperate need to get more students involved in WLUG. The "annual" WlugSurvey needs to be done again.

SFDbarcamp
by John Billings 14 Sep '09

14 Sep '09

We have a really nice venue for Software Freedom Day this year, and we are trying to come up with ideas to best utilize it. So one of those ideas is to have a barcamp, where anyone can give a presentation on anything they are interested in. I've put up a page here to get things started: http://wlug.org.nz/SFDbarcamp If we don't fill up that page, you can always sign up the day of, or if you change your mind or something, we won't hold you to anything. It's basically an open mic kind of thing, as long as the talk is somehow related to FOSS. You can do slides if you want, we will have a projector. Please edit the page above or let me know if you want to give a talk or have any thoughts or suggestions. - John

Richard Stallman on Software Patents
by David Hallett 13 Sep '09

13 Sep '09

30 September 2009: 12:00pm - 2:00pm Events Room 1, Gallagher Hub Wintec City Campus, Gate 5 Tristram Street, Hamilton In this insightful discussion, international Free Software advocate Richard Stallman (RMS) will argue that software patents seriously and significantly obstruct software development. Software patents are patents that cover software ideas. Stallman will argue that they restrict the development of software to the point that the risk of legal action as a result of design decisions is dramatically raised. Stallman will also make the point that patents in other fields restrict factories, but in IT, software patents restrict every computer user and consumer. Stallman will also present some of the international research and economic data related to this issue. Light refreshments provided. About The Speaker Richard Stallman is a software developer and software freedom activist. In 1983 he announced the project to develop the GNU operating system, a Unix-like operating system meant to be entirely free software, and has been the project's leader ever since. With that announcement Stallman also launched the Free Software Movement. In October 1985 he started the Free Software Foundation. Registration Details: Registration is free but essential. Places are limited - please register to secure your place. http://www.nzcs.org.nz/events/waikato_bop/70-Richard_Stallman_on_Software_P…

There are lots of different files in each directory; I took some time to recap and I think I may have caused the problem. I downloaded something called: Noctropolis_English_Uncensored. The download contained: Noctropolis_English_Uncensored.ccd 2.7kb Noctropolis_English_Uncensored.img 602.2mb Noctropolis_English_Uncensored.sub 24.5mb Noctropolis-Manual.pdf unreadable with document viewer "unknown mime type" I copied them to a c/d found they were unreadable so saved them as an iso on my hard drive. I think this may have caused all the files to be appended... Does anyone have some suggestions as to what course of action I should follow? Bootkit Bypasses TrueCrypt Encryption
by Peter Reutemann 02 Aug '09

02 Aug '09

Just came across this article on slashdot, about how a bootkit is used to bypass TrueCrypt's encryption in a rather elegant way: http://it.slashdot.org/story/09/08/01/2247225/Bootkit-Bypasses-TrueCrypt-En… At least, there is some form of protection possible, since anti-virus software fails completely at detecting the bootkit: "However, administrator privileges or physical access to a system are required for an infection. At present, only machines running the traditional BIOS are vulnerable. The attack is unsuccessful when the BIOS successor the Extensible Firmware Interface (EFI) is at work on the motherboard. The most effective protection appears to be encrypting the entire hard disk with software that is based on the Trusted Platform Module (TPM)." re-scoring music using Rosegarden
by Justin Hyde 29 Jul '09

29 Jul '09

I want to re-score some music (on paper) from tenor clef to bass clef and would like to use Rosegarden on my Ubuntu box to do this. I have read the tutorial at www.rosegardenmusic.com but I am still finding it hard to work out the basics of writing the music on-screen. Are there any local users of Rosegarden who could assist me? Cheers Justin Hyde

Fun with windows xp..............
by jaytee＠clear.net.nz 26 Jul '09

26 Jul '09

Hi All, I am currently trying to recover three hundred media files from a windows system that keeps rebooting. With Puppy fire-hydrant the machine ran for a long time without error. I could access the windows drive and the files I wish to recover. The usb drive was mounted and had read write permissions. the problem was I could only copy ONE file at a time.. ON to Knoppix which also ran well, I could access the directories and bulk copy the files but could not mount the usb drive for some bizarre reason. Went to windows where everything I needed is available but it started rebooting as soon as it got warmed up.. My next course of action may be to remove the drive from the machine so that I can copy the info directly to another drive. However if some one knows a simple fix for the usb mount in Knoppix I would like to hear from you. Regards John

-----Original Message----- From: Roderick Aldridge [mailto:rod-aldridge(a)xnet.co.nz] Sent: Thursday, 9 July 2009 9:26 a.m. To: Waikato Linux Users Group Subject: Google announces Chrome operating system Speculation that Google is developing a web-focused operating system is confirmed by the announcement. http://googleblog.blogspot.com/2009/07/introducing-google-chrome-os.html "Google Chrome OS is an open source, lightweight operating system that will initially be targeted at netbooks. Later this year we will open-source its code, and netbooks running Google Chrome OS will be available for consumers in the second half of 2010. ........................... The software architecture is simple - Google Chrome running within a new windowing system on top of a Linux kernel. For application developers, the web is the platform. All web-based applications will automatically work and new applications can be written using your favorite web technologies. And of course, these apps will run not only on Google Chrome OS, but on any standards-based browser on Windows, Mac and Linux thereby giving developers the largest user base of any platform." Big long-term implications for FOSS, Microsoft and many others. Fwd: [FSF] New Zealand in urgent danger of software patents
by Aleksey Tsalolikhin 29 Jun '09

29 Jun '09

Hello dear Waikato Linux Users Group, Just wanted to make sure you saw this massage and call for action from the Free Software Foundation. Best, Aleksey Tsalolikhin UNIX Sys Admin ---------- Forwarded message ---------- From: Peter Brown <peterb(a)fsf.org> Date: Tue, Jun 16, 2009 at 2:35 PM Subject: [FSF] New Zealand in urgent danger of software patents To: info-fsf(a)gnu.org The director of the End Software Patents campaign Ciaran O'Riordan writes to warn of an imminent threat of software patents in New Zealand: Dear Free Software Supporters, The New Zealand government has proposed allowing unlimited software patenting. They are accepting comments until July 2nd, but participation from the people who will be harmed seems very low. The details of how to participate can be found on swpat.org: http://en.swpat.org/wiki/New_Zealand Participation of the free software community is particularly important because, although SME federations and consumer rights groups are sometimes the most influential lobbies against software patents, it's often the free software community that raises awareness of the issue and gets these other groups moving. The July 2nd deadline is very close, so work is needed now. We thus urge you to participate in the consultation, but also to raise awareness on blogs, news sites, and among email groups, and to contact related interest organisations and companies to ask them to get involved too. Fwd: Resignation

23 Jun '09

Resignation From: James Pluck <james(a)courage.co.nz> To: Waikato Linux Users Group <wlug(a)list.waikato.ac.nz> Date: Thursday 09:23:02 Dear WLUG Members, In the last month to 6 weeks my wife and I have been asked by CYFS to undertake the care of two more foster children in permanent placements. Because of the changes this new circumstance has made to our lives and to our schedules I find that I can no longer guarantee to attend all WLUG and WLUG-committee meetings. As President this is not acceptable to me. As I am also the Librarian this means that the library is unavailable to members. This I also cannot condone in myself. So out of respect for the WLUG I tender my resignation from the position of president and from the Committee and Librarian position effective immediately. I do not do this happily as I would much prefer to finish the year completing what I promised to do, but this is in the best interests of the WLUG. I will remain a financial member of the WLUG as I still believe in FOSS and still enjoy the many friendships I have made. In the interim, Bruce will step up from VP to President and Liz Quilty will move into the role of VP. John Billings has offered to take over the library. I wish Bruce, Liz, John and the rest of the committee the very best and will remain available to assist where I can with events. The remaining members of the committee will appoint an interim seventh committee member shortly. Thank you for your trust in me and I apologise for being unable to see it through. However, my family commitments must take priority. Wishing you all well. James Pluck WLUG Past President.

VOIP Presentation
by Chris O'Halloran 22 Jun '09

22 Jun '09

Greetings, I've created a web safe version of my presentation this evening (scrubbed phone numbers and contact details) and corrected a few spelling errors. I've also included a few links at the end of the presentation in response to some of the questions I fielded at the end of the evening. http://www.wlug.org.nz/~cmoman/voip_presentation/VOIP_presentation_20090622… For those of you considering the VOIP route as a replacement for your phone line, consider taking things one step at a time. Ie get your VOIP up and working before going the Naked DSL route. Make sure you are comfortable with the level of reliability of your VOIP service: No power, no phone. router offline, no phone. Special services such as alarm monitoring or St John ambulance etc aren't suitable for VOIP. A good starting point is using 2talks free service. It doesn't cost anything to set up an account and gives you a few free minutes a month such that you configure and test your hardware/softphone. It's always free to make calls to other 2talk users. ANNOUNCE: WLUG meeting is one week away
by Meeting Reminder Bot 21 Jun '09

21 Jun '09

The Waikato Linux Users Group have a meeting in one week from today: ---------------------------------------------------------------------- This meeting is being rescheduled for July due to some scheduling conflicts. VikOlliver Vik will be presenting the RepRap 3D printer. This is a machine which can produce 3D objects that you define in software, much like printing to any ordinary 2D printer. The goal of the project is to create a low cost 3D printer which has the capability to replicate new and improved versions of itself. This meeting will be held in Events Room 1 in the HUB at Wintec, not at our usual meeting room at the University of Waikato. There is a map here: http://www.wintec.ac.nz/index.asp?pageID=2145827879

by Meeting Reminder Bot 21 Jun '09

21 Jun '09

There's a WLUG meeting tonight: ---------------------------------------------------------------------- The meeting we had planned (http://www.wlug.org.nz/MeetingTopics.2009-06-29) is being rescheduled for July. Instead we are going to have an informal social night. We will have pizza, refreshments and other treats. We will do some short presentations on using Skype on a Linux box, and provide answers to any questions you might have about Linux or Free/Open Source Software. A couple people will be hacking a wireless Internet Access Point using a LightWire account. If they are successful there will be free Internet access. We might talk about preparations for SoftwareFreedomDay. 7:30pm MS4.G.02 (http://www.waikato.ac.nz/contacts/map?MS4) (zcat notes that 'skype' is non-free software, and volunteered to demo ekiga as well)

decent, independent statistics for New Zealand internet users?
by Stuart A. Yeates 21 Jun '09

21 Jun '09

Does anyone know whether there is anyone producing decent statistics of New Zealand internet users? I'm aware that the area is fraught, I'm really just looking for an analysis from someone that can at least spell "vested interest" and "self-selected sample." Ideally the statistics would include things like: 1) OS / browser used 2) bandwidth of connection 3) use of English/Maori and/or ethnicity 4) social networking sites used The best I've found so far is: http://www.aut.ac.nz/research/research-institutes/icdc/projects/world-inter… which has good coverage of (2) and the ethnicity aspects of (3). I've also got our own google analytics stats with >a million "unique users", but this these seem to be pretty much contaminated by the fact that _lots_ of our users access our site from school. cheers stuart

Hi folk I am also from rural Morrinsville and am looking to switch completely to Linux as soon as possible. As an older guy I get tired eyes looking at a sreen too much so was looking for some base literature to read on Linux structures, protocols etc. to get my mind in the grove. I used to write software a lot and am familiar with DOS which I guess is getting quiet obsolete. Am intending to be at the Social night on Monday so wonder if some of the library could be available. Hi to the other guys from this way, looking forward to meeting Wayne ----- Original Message ----- From: <wlug-request(a)list.waikato.ac.nz> To: <wlug(a)list.waikato.ac.nz> Sent: Thursday, June 11, 2009 12:00 PM Subject: wlug Digest, Vol 216, Issue 3 > Send wlug mailing list submissions to > wlug(a)list.waikato.ac.nz > > To subscribe or unsubscribe via the World Wide Web, visit > http://list.waikato.ac.nz/mailman/listinfo/wlug > or, via email, send a message with subject or body 'help' to > wlug-request(a)list.waikato.ac.nz > > You can reach the person managing the list at > wlug-owner(a)list.waikato.ac.nz > > When replying, please edit your Subject line so it is more specific > than "Re: Contents of wlug digest..." > > > Today's Topics: > > 1. Good article here on some things you might want to install (or remove) after doing a fresh Ubuntu install. New It Make! Community Radio show
by John Billings 11 Jun '09

11 Jun '09

I've been working on a radio show over at: http://communityradio.co.nz/ It's starting today, the other month when Walter McGinnis was here, he and Mark Caunter from the Library were kind enough to help put together the first episode. We talk about Kete, which was also mentioned on Stuff yesterday: http://www.stuff.co.nz/national/education/2487819/Global-interest-in-NZ-wik… I put a plug for WLUG in, and I plan to do a couple episodes in the future mainly on FOSS. Probably around the time of Software Freedom Day. I'm using Audacity to edit the show. Best, John

Turning off pulseaudio in Ubuntu 9.04
by Peter Reutemann 04 Jun '09

04 Jun '09

Hi there I had problems on my MSI Wind U100 work laptop running Ubuntu 9.04 getting sound to work in Skype (video was working out of the box). Knowing that pulseaudio behaved erratic on my Dell's Intel chipset under 8.10 (sound just disappeared after a day - only solution that worked was to reboot!), I attempted to turn off pulseaudio as well. After completely switching over to ALSA again, everything was working again as expected. :-) The following blog entry did the trick for me: http://idyllictux.wordpress.com/2009/04/21/ubuntu-904-jaunty-keeping-the-be… Cheers, Peter -- Peter Reutemann, Dept. of Computer Science, University of Waikato, NZ http://www.cs.waikato.ac.nz/~fracpete/ Ph. +64 (7) 858-5174

Brasero issues...
by Chakat Sandwalker 04 Jun '09

04 Jun '09

Has anyone noticed any issues with burning discs with Brasero in Ubuntu 9.04? I've found that the progress bar goes to about 50%, then suddenly resets to 0%, tells me it's written nothing, but the writing speed continues as normal (though it seems to go only up to about 1.0x, though I know the drive's writing at a much higher speed). I turned a couple of discs into coasters before I figured it out. Sandy
