Adafruit launches educational distro for Raspberry PI

New wine, old wineskins
by Michael McDonald 03 Aug '12

03 Aug '12

New wine, old wineskins Thought I might have had a problem to bring along to tomorrow's work but alas, I managed to find a workaround. Read on ... Had a long day Saturday trying to get Ubuntu 12.04 on to an old computer (or two). Live CD ran perfectly OK, but install seemed to crash at the same spot each time. The last machine I tried had an AMD 2000+ CPU, so after the failure with the 32 bit live CD, downloaded and tried the AMD/64 bit version. No go for that ... CPU was 32 bit - AMD wasn't relevant in this case! Did a little bit of Googling and it looked like PAE (pyhsical address extension) might be the problem. Recommended action was try Xubuntu or Lubuntu. Downloaded Xubuntu. Live CD ran up normally but install crashed, apparently at the same spot. Oh well, may have to live with an older version, so installed 11.10. Live CD was fine, Install went fine. Reboot ... and YUCK ... 640x480 (or worse) screen display. Also promptly appearing was the screen offering an upgrade to 12.04. Do I decide to chase the nVidia driver problem or try the online upgrade? Chose the latter (can always reinstall 11.10). Some windows were a bit of a problem ... had to use Alt/F7 to move them around so I could see the buttons at the bottom of the window. I was reminded why I always do fresh installs when changing sytems. It took at least two hours, and downloaded at least 700MB of files from the Internet. And guess what... Success! Video fine, 12.04 runs fine. Total Internet usage for the day was over 3.5GB. Would have been quicker for me to to pop down to PBTech, buy a "clean" computer, and install U12.04! Michael

Meeting topics for 23 Jul 2012
by Rene Bartosh 23 Jul '12

23 Jul '12

Hi all, Does anyone have any subjects they would be willing to present at the next Monday meeting (in a weeks time)? Or for any upcoming meetings for that matter? I have a Raspberry PI on order (as I suspect a few others do too) which I am happy to bring along for a look and a tinker once it arrives - should be in the next month or two. Also I've signed up for the Beginners and Friends Python Programming Workshop (see http://www.meetup.com/nz-python-user-group/events/71029952/) so I'm happy to give a quick recap of that if anyone is interested. Another topic I could talk on is the XBMC home theater package - xbmc.org if anyone is interested. Measuring / limiting internet use
by Bruce Kingsbury 20 Jul '12

20 Jul '12

At community centre I have a debian server that routes / filters all network traffic. Is there any easy way to produce graphs of daily internet use by machine, by site visited, etc? I've tried to set up a few different packages but I can't figure any of them out, what's the easiest option? Also at home I have one computer that uses between 2GB and 3GB every day. Is there any easy way to limit this to 200M a day and then just cut off the internet for the next 24 hours?

Sublime Text Editor

Hi all, For anyone writing code, this was a new one for me yesterday http://www.sublimetext.com There is a ppa for it which is simpler than the website's download option. https://launchpad.net/~webupd8team/+archive/sublime-text-2/ Dependencies include Mono and you are obliged to pay for it if you decide to use it. I've had a quick play with it. Looks pretty whizzy but I've yet to decide if I'll buy it. If anything, it's an insight into what is possible. Cheers, Chris

Are Open-Source Desktops Losing Competitiveness?

'Working on the non-user-interface parts of applications can be challenging, and this is not something that most freetime-contributors are striving for. Linux Mint 13 - Mate edition
by Peter Reutemann 17 Jun '12

17 Jun '12

Hi everyone My work laptop (Lenovo X100e) choked and died during an update of Ubuntu 12.04 on Friday morning, resulting in an installation that no longer booted (root partition gone, kernel panic). Decided to re-install it with Linux Mint 13 Mate edition, since the Cinnamon edition was rendering too slow and quite sluggish. After a couple of hours, I was up and running again. Once again with a beautiful desktop, but with qt applications (keepassx, skype, ...) looking hideous. Today, I found the solution: http://forums.linuxmint.com/viewtopic.php?f=219&t=104216#p591250 The qt4 theme wasn't set to gtk+, but "Desktop settings". Doesn't seem to handle gtk+3 for some reason. Specs: - mintBox Basic ($476 + shipping, duty & VAT): 250GB HDD APU G-T40N (1.0 GHz dual core + Radeon HD 6290 – 9W) 4GB RAM Flat metal case - mintBox Pro ($549 + shipping, duty & VAT): 250GB HDD APU G-T56N (1.65 GHz dual core + Radeon HD 6320 – 18W) 8GB RAM Ribbed metal case "Another highlight of the mintBox is how easy it is to open it. /usr/share/applications what am I doing wrong?
by Bruce Kingsbury 14 Jun '12

14 Jun '12

I've installed Padman and urban terror in /opt .. created scripts to launch them in /usr/games, put icons in /usr/share/pixmaps and created .desktop files in /usr/share/applications (by copying the one for openarena and just changing the names). So far so good, the games appear in the menu and I can play them. After a reboot they're gone from the menu for every user, but I can get them back in the menu by simply opening a root terminal, moving the two .desktop files from /usr/share/applications to another directory and then moving them back again. And nothing more than this is required. What is going on?!

With Euro Zone Problems, Bitcoin Experiencing Boost In Legitimacy
by Peter Reutemann 13 Jun '12

13 Jun '12

For the Bitcoiners among you, this might be interesting: "Despite being used for drugs and beef jerky, Bitcoin is finding legitimate purposes. Bitcoin's decentralized convenience means international efficiency, in areas where local restrictions on money transfers to foreign companies make legal businesses cumbersome. 'I've been able to have cash in my bank account in a matter of hours using Bitcoin, rather than three days with traditional banking,' one British businessman in China told Reuters. In embattled Europe, Bitcoin offers some a viable alternative against central banks, said a Greek owner of an island bar and restaurant who accepts payment in Bitcoin. 'I don't put money in the banks. I trust the euro as a note, but I don't trust banks. I don't want them making money out of my earnings.' Indeed, Europe's financial woes are caused an unprecedented surge of interest in the alternative currency, as the continent loses economic credibility with each new bailout, according to a report by the Financial Post." -- source: http://politics.slashdot.org/story/12/06/12/2351203/with-euro-zone-problems… Cheers, Peter -- Peter Reutemann, Dept. of Computer Science, University of Waikato, NZ http://www.cms.waikato.ac.nz/~fracpete/ Ph. +64 (7) 858-5174

MD5crypt Password Scrambler Is No Longer Considered Safe
by Peter Reutemann 07 Jun '12

07 Jun '12

In the light of the LinkedIn password hash leak: "Now, Poul-Henning Kamp a developer known for work on various projects and the author of the md5crypt password scrambler asks everybody to migrate to a stronger password scrambler without undue delay. From the blog post: 'New research has shown that it can be run at a rate close to 1 million checks per second on COTS GPU hardware, which means that it is as prone to brute-force attacks as the DES based UNIX crypt was back in 1995: Any 8 character password can be found in a couple of days. The default algorithm for storing password hashes in /etc/shadow is MD5. NZ Computer Society National Series: Games development from NZ - How to get ahead

NZ Computer Society National Series: Games development from NZ - How to get ahead 13 June 2012: 12:00 pm - 1:30 pm Events Room One, Gallagher Hub Wintec City Campus Gate 3, Tristram Street Hamilton Games development from NZ: How to get ahead The games development industry is big. Seriously big. Globally the $90 billion games industry is already larger than music recordings and the Hollywood box office and has been an investment hot spot. And the New Zealand industry is no exception. Our video games industry grew significantly last year and is one of the fastest growing export sectors in the country. When digital distribution and smartphone AppStores reduced the barriers to publishing, the lid was taken off a sector that had long shown promise. Finally our distance from publishers and financiers is no longer an issue. But what's really happening in New Zealand and how do you get in on the action? In this interactive presentation Stephen Knightly from the NZ Game Developers Association will give a "state of the nation" on the growth and position of the New Zealand games sector and talk in depth about how you or your company can break in. Note: Light lunch provided. Free for NZCS members, inexpensive for others. Registration required at the following URL: http://www.nzcs.org.nz/events/waikato_bop/593-Games_development Regards, David Hallett, BSc, MNZCS ITCP P.O. Linux Mint 13 (Maya) Has Arrived
by Peter Reutemann 23 May '12

23 May '12

"Linux Mint 13 (Maya) has just been released. DVDs come in four flavors — MATE (with and without codecs) and Cinnamon (with and without codecs) — in both 32-bit and 64-bit versions. The codec-free versions comply with U.S. and Japanese IP regulations. MATE 1.2 is Linux Mint's community-powered extension of Gnome 2. Cinnamon 1.4 is built upon Gnome 3, but has a more traditional look and feel. As with Ubuntu 12.04, upon which Linux Mint draws, all editions come with Long-term support (LTS) until April, 2017. Into the Mosh Pit: A Mobile Shell Replacement for SSH
by Peter Reutemann 22 May '12

Presentation at Hamilton Council 10 Year Plan Hearing
by Ian Stewart 21 May '12

21 May '12

Hi Folks, Just to let you know that I delivered my 5 minutes of Open Source to Hamilton City Council. Rob, Peter, Kyle, Noel and Bruce; many thanks for your e-mails with hints/comments on the presenting. My 20 x hand-out's included my home made copies of ubuntu 12.04 desktop i386. I did investigate Peters suggestion of handing out the Ubuntu "business re-mix", but decided against it on the grounds of having to agree to some EULA's before downloading didn't make it suitable. I parallel the handing out of home made Open Source CD's somewhat like... going along to Council to promote a new type of muffins, and in doing so I bring along a batch of muffins that I've baked at home. The Councillors are welcome to eat the muffins themselves, or take them home and give them to their kids. At the end of my presentation I got in a plug for Peters submission #365. This was somewhat like stating, that Peter has supplied the recipe for the muffin's, and Council can get their chief cook to investigate Peters recipe in more depth to see if the Council want to get into making muffins. So I don't think it mattered that my CD's had a "home made" look about them. The goal of my submission was: "To have included in the Hamilton 2012-22 10-year Plan: Reduce the costs of Hamilton City Council's Information Technology, through the implementation of Open Source Software." On May 29-30 Council will decide on the submissions, and on June 29 the final plan will be adopted. So we will have to wait and see if Open Source gets its foot in the door this time round. cheers, Ian. PS: One Councillor asked me if he'd be able to use the ubuntu 12.04 i386 desktop CD on his Mac. I told him that I was not knowledgeable on Mac's and I'd get back to him. I see there's this... https://help.ubuntu.com/community/MactelSupportTeam/AppleIntelInstallation ...on installing ubuntu on Mac's that use intel chipset. I'm not sure if I'd like to recommend he gives this a go unless he's 100% sure his Mac has no data on it. Maybe I'll suggest he comes along to a wlug Saturday workshop and hopefully someone is there that's done this sort of thing on Mac's. cheers, Ian.

Dolphin file brower issue on Ubuntu 12.04
by Peter Reutemann 21 May '12

21 May '12

Hi there Unfortunately, Nautilus got a bit neutered in Ubuntu 12.04, by removing the "Home" and "Up" buttons. Hence I switched to using KDE's Dolphin file browser instead, in my Gnome classic session. But, of course, this isn't without problems... The most annoying thing is that a selected file/directory fades from white font on orange background (dolphin-selected.png) to white font on white background, when hovering with the mouse above the selected file (dolphin-selected_mouse_hover.png). Can this "fading" be turned off? I couldn't find anything obvious in the KDE settings and changing themes didn't seem to do anything either (window+gtk theme: Radiance, icon theme: ubuntu-mono-light). Any KDE power-user out there that can help with that? Thanks. OSI / FOSS Submissions to Hamilton City Council 10 year plan. - Ian to deliver presentation at Hearing
by Ian Stewart 16 May '12

16 May '12

The Hamilton City Council received 724 submissions to their 2012-2022 Draft 10 Year Plan. Just under 200 of those that submitted plans, have indicated they wish to attend the hearing and deliver a presentation. These hearing are being held this week, 14th May to 18th May. The submissions have been split into 12 categories. The last category, "Other Issues Raised" has 78 submissions and 25 of those submitters wish to present at the hearing. Of these 78 submissions I found two regarding Hamilton City Council's IT strategy. Both promote the implementation of the Open Source Initiative /FOSS. Peter Reutemann's submission (#365) can be read here... http://www.hamilton.co.nz/our-council/council-publications/10yearplan/10yea… My submission (#294) can be read here... http://www.hamilton.co.nz/our-council/council-publications/10yearplan/10yea… Peter opted not to present, while I have opted to make a presentation. I have been invited to present at 12 noon on Thu 17 May for 5 minutes at the Municipal Building in Garden place. It is requested that the 5 minutes includes time for questions. I welcome anyone from wlug that would like to provide ideas or suggestions for my presentation to send an e-mail to me: ianstewart56 at hotmail dot com. Alternatively, I will go to The Hilly bar, (off clyde St.- next to the Warehouse) at 7pm this Tuesday night (15th). Drop by and we can discuss presentation ideas over a beer. In my quick glance through the 78 "Other Issues Raised" submissions, apart from Peter and my submissions, none of the others appear to be promoting something that is designed to reduce the costs of the Councils operations to the rate-payers. For my presentation I believe that the focal point needs to be that I'm proposing the implementation of something that "reduces costs". cheers, Ian. FYI: My draft presentation strategy is currently along these lines: o. 5 minutes is 300 seconds. I make 10 x 24 second points = 240 seconds = 4 minutes. o. Allow 1 minute for questions. o. Mention "cost saving" in each of the 10 points. o. Don't use a slide presentation. Have printed up hand-out's for the Councillors. o. Hand-out's have a page to write questions on. o. Don't get technical. E.g. Don't even say the word "Linux". o. Mention where Open Source saves costs: Initial "purchase" lower, Lower support centre calls, Reduce h/w replacement. o. Promote Council to review Peter's submission #365 containing many examples and references. o. The global IT strategy for the future is Open Source. The council is only deciding "When" they start. o. Only answer non-technical questions. Don't get into a technical jargon wrestling match. o. Collect up written questions at the end, and agree to submit written responses to Council by the next day. o. Be jovial and happy. o. Give all the councillors at the hearing a copy of Ubuntu 12.04 CD, and tell them its legally theirs. o. ? o. ? o... more ideas welcomed from wlug!

Ubuntu 12.04: 1 pixel wide window borders
by Peter Reutemann 11 May '12

OpenShot video editor on Ubuntu 12.04
by Peter Reutemann 11 May '12

11 May '12

Hi there Just encountered a problem with the OpenShot video editor under Ubuntu 12.04. For some reason, I couldn't export to mp4 (h.264 or mpeg4) because OpenShot moaned that libx264 and libmp3lame weren't installed. Fact is, they were installed (but as libmp3lame0, for instance). Didn't go into too much digging around for the root of this problem, but simply added the medibuntu repository and installed the avformat library, which solved the issue. Here is what I did: - added medibuntu repository (run in terminal) sudo wget --output-document=/etc/apt/sources.list.d/medibuntu.list http://www.medibuntu.org/sources.list.d/$(lsb_release -cs).list && sudo apt-get --quiet update && sudo apt-get --yes --quiet --allow-unauthenticated install medibuntu-keyring && sudo apt-get --quiet update source: https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Medibuntu#Adding%20the%20Repository - installed avformat library (version 53 instead of 52): sudo apt-get install libavformat-extra-53 source: http://askubuntu.com/questions/26142/trouble-installing-codecs-libx264-and-… HTH Cheers, Peter -- Peter Reutemann, Dept. of Computer Science, University of Waikato, NZ http://www.cs.waikato.ac.nz/~fracpete/ Ph. +64 (7) 858-5174

OK Creating Wallpaper slide show, ...but a bit different with Ubunt 11.10
by Ian Stewart 07 May '12

07 May '12

Peter: Thanks for the pointer to creating wallpaper slide-shows. I didn't give the GUI application approach using "crebs" (create background slideshow) a try. I opted for the text editing and creation of a .xml file. I found the background slide show worked fine with Ubuntu 11.04. However there are changes with Ubuntu 11.10. The following posting does a good job of telling you how to get a background slide show running on 11.10... http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1881394 ...the approach now seems to be that you edit and append to... /usr/share/gnome-background-properties/ubuntu-wallpapers.xml ...With 12.04 not far away, I think I'll wait and see what it takes to get a slide show working on that release. cheers, Ian.

Looks like the Raspberry Pi is gaining traction: "Oracle seem to be concerned that the Raspberry Pi manages to run Java properly and they are actively working on the problem. Sierra Wireless USB 308
by Bruce Kingsbury 19 Mar '12

19 Mar '12

Sierra's website says this device is compatible with Linux. I did an install of Ubuntu 10.04 recently, and initially the Sierra USB thingy was working fine, but then it stopped. Fiddled around a little and I eventually got it to work again (I'm not sure that anything I did was actually responsible for this) but apparently it stopped working again shortly after I left. A few weeks later I upgraded all the packages, something I hadn't done during the install, and the device started working again. I rebooted the machine several times and each time the connection came up reliably soon after I connected the device. Now it's not working again. It's not working on my Debian machine either. But it works perfectly in any windows machine every single time, and I've carefully checked the APN, authentication and compression settings and made them the same under Linux (PAP only, no compression anywhere) but still no worky. Any suggestions?

What are the best practices for Linux partitioning & Mount points for Production systems
by nk oorda 02 Mar '12

02 Mar '12

What are the best practices for Linux partitioning & Mount points for Production systems Hi i need some suggestion for defining the partition size for my production systems. we are going to use CentOS 6.2 (64 bit) - Partition size - Mount points What i am able to get from the google search is: / Root File System (/bin , /sbin , /dev , /root /usr program and source code /var variable data /boot boot kernels /tmp temp file locations /work to do your work here "you can name it anything" Swap - */home* - Set option nosuid, and nodev with diskquota option - */usr* - Set option nodev - */tmp* - Set option nodev, nosuid, noexec option must be enabled - /var local, nodev, nosuid Most of the server will be running - Apache -Tomcat -SOLR and few of them would be running MySQL as data base. what is concern is that one of the developer accidentally deleted the /usr files with sudo access. if somehow i can protect the core system from the developers mistake that would be really good. Thanks in advance for help.

Hi all I have an old shuttle PC here that I no longer need. Celeron 2.6Ghz, 512 MB of ram, PCI graphics and NIC (+ onboard NIC / sound etc). Still goes fine, but I've upgraded to an HP N40L and no longer need this. Will poke a SATA 3.5" disk into it. Pickup from Hillcrest area evenings/weeknights, or from the KPMG Building weekdays. Let me know if you're interested.

downloading flash videos
by Peter Reutemann 07 Feb '12

07 Feb '12

Hi there Though I love youtube_dl [1] for grabbing youtube videos, I needed to download a video from blip.tv (interview with Jon "maddog" Hall). This morning, I came across "get-flash-videos", which can download videos from blib.tv, among all these other webpages, too: YouTube, eHow, Brightcove (used by many sites like Channel 4, Daily Telegraph ...), BBC (news, etc), Metacafe, 5min, Google, fliqz, nicovideo, vimeo, Blip, Break, Collegehumor, Muzu, Sevenload, Megavideo, Wat.tv Here's the project's homepage: http://code.google.com/p/get-flash-videos/ Installation instructions -- it's written in perl, so should run on most platforms: http://code.google.com/p/get-flash-videos/wiki/Installation Cheers, Peter References [1] fixing youtube_dl, http://www.webupd8.org/2010/07/update-youtube-dl-to-get-it-working.html -- Peter Reutemann, Dept. of Computer Science, University of Waikato, NZ http://www.cs.waikato.ac.nz/~fracpete/ Ph. +64 (7) 858-5174

Just came across the book "Open Advice" on Slashdot, which should be of interest to any wanting to start contributing to open source: "This new book Open Advice is the answer to: 'What would you have liked to know when you started contributing?' 42 prominent free and open source software contributors give insights into the many different talents it takes to make a successful software project; coding, of course, but also design, translation, marketing and other skills. New KDE tablet to liberate Linux enthusiasts from walled garden
by Peter Reutemann 31 Jan '12

Just came across this article on ars technica: "KDE developer Aaron Seigo has announced a new upcoming tablet computer, called the Spark, that will ship with KDE's Plasma environment. The device, which has a seven-inch display and a 1GHz ARM CPU, will sell for €200 ($262). Underneath the shiny KDE surface, the Spark reportedly runs Mer, a community-driven fork of the Linux-based MeeGo platform. Seigo says that the device will be open and that users will be able to install custom firmware." http://arstechnica.com/gadgets/news/2012/01/new-kde-tablet-to-liberate-linu… Cheers, Peter -- Peter Reutemann, Dept. of Computer Science, University of Waikato, NZ http://www.cs.waikato.ac.nz/~fracpete/ Ph. +64 (7) 858-5174

Garage Cleanout Redux
by Daniel Lawson 07 Jan '12

07 Jan '12

Hi all I still have some bits and pieces that may be of interest to WLUG members. 2x HP Jetdirect EX Plus Printserver (10Mbit RJ45 + BNC). No PSU, 13VDC, looks like it may be HP proprietary. 1x Axis 550 printserver (10MBit RJ45 + BNC), with psu i think. 1x Axis 83 Device Server. RISC based embedded system, lots of hackability. http://www.lilax.net/textfiles/2003-04-19/axis_82_82_lowres.pdf. 32bit RISC ETRAX 100LX MCM2+8 CPU, 6MB Flash, 16MB ram, dual ethernet, dual rs232 serial, single rs485 serial, USB1.1 port. Lots of support for building custom linux builds to go on here, eg ddwrt. (I've definitely built custom images to go on this system, although I can't find current links to any docs) 2x External modems. Two PSUs that probably go with these, but I'm not sure. 1x 3com Homeconnect DSL Modem. DSL1 only, runs with pppoe back to your host, so it terminates the IP on your machine. No wifi. Dates back to when DSL was first introduced in NZ. Industrial patch cables. 7 x 2m, RJ45 (8P8C) to XP85, and 2x2m XP85 to XP85. XP85 is basically a secure screw fitting around an RJ45/8P8C jack. It looks like this: http://www.alternetivo.cz/industrial-patch-cord-utp-xp85-to-mc5-1-5m-yellow… <http://www.alternetivo.cz/industrial-patch-cord-utp-xp85-to-mc5-1-5m-yellow…> Some old Fibrechannel gear. One Emulex LP8000, which had current driver support (lpfc.ko) in debian lenny at least, and two Compaq Tachyon adapters, which show up on the bus, but don't seem to have active drivers since around 2.6.8. There's still 2.4 kernel support for them however. There's also a pair of Compaq Fibrechannel Hubs. Everything has optical modules, and there's a few fibre patches as well. 2x ISDN cards. Single basic-rate ports I think, I can't recall the name, if you're interested I'll dig them out. 1x 17" CRT monitor, in good condition, works well. All the above is free to whoever wants them, you must pickup from Hillcrest area, or from the CBD during business hours. No guarantee that any of it works. If it doesn't go here, it's going to the new HCC e-waste facility ( http://hamilton.co.nz/page/pageid/2145835076) on or around the 18th. _______________________________________________ wlug mailing list | wlug(a)list.waikato.ac.nz Unsubscribe: http://list.waikato.ac.nz/mailman/listinfo/wlug

Mint's Cinnamon hits 1.1.3
by Peter Reutemann 04 Jan '12

04 Jan '12

Being now a Linux Mint convert (SuSE -> Ubuntu -> Kubuntu -> Mint), I'm looking forward to what the Mint community comes up with their Cinnamon fork of the Gnome shell. They are attempting to use Gnome 3 technology to give you a Gnome 2 layout: http://h-online.com/-1402913 Why did I change Linux distributions? - SuSE -> Ubuntu: back in the days, the SuSE distro that I had downloaded via dial-up was riddled with bugs including the update manager. Updating manually turned out to be way too tedious. An Ubuntu live CD came in handy there. - Ubuntu -> Kubuntu: Unity, nuff said. Also, originally long-time KDE user. - Kubuntu -> Mint: Kubuntu being a bit sluggish and the taskbar buggy (didn't like long sessions with opening/closing lots of windows). If you haven't tried Linux Mint, give it a go. It is a very polished Linux distro. Personally, I'm running version "Katya". http://linuxmint.com/ Cheers, Peter -- Peter Reutemann, Dept. of Computer Science, University of Waikato, NZ http://www.cs.waikato.ac.nz/~fracpete/ Ph. +64 (7) 858-5174

Razor-Qt: A New Qt-Based Desktop Environment
by Peter Reutemann 23 Dec '11

23 Dec '11

Feel like a change of desktop? Just came across the following posting on phoronix: Razor-Qt is a new Qt-based desktop environment for Linux systems. The Razor-Qt desktop was just updated to version 0.4.0 after being in development for months. This release improves stability of the lightweight desktop, introduces several new components, offers new translations, a new theme, new panel plug-ins, and much more. The new Razor desktop components are azor-runner, razor-config, qtxdg, and Razor own menu. Razor-Qt is self-described as "an advanced, easy-to-use, and fast desktop environment based on Qt technologies. It has been tailored for users who value simplicity, speed, and intuitive interface. Unlike desktop environments, Razor-qt also works fine with weak machines." More information on this new desktop release can be found in this blog posting: http://yarpen.cz/rants/?p=43 Phoronix post: http://www.phoronix.com/scan.php?page=news_item&px=MTAyOTg Razor-Qt homepage: http://razor-qt.org/ Cheers, Peter -- Peter Reutemann, Dept. of Computer Science, University of Waikato, NZ http://www.cs.waikato.ac.nz/~fracpete/ Ph. +64 (7) 858-5174

how to nfs export with file system acls
by Gregory Machin 12 Dec '11

12 Dec '11

Hi. I have a "CentOS release 5.3 (Final)" server that I need to replace. I need to migrate this server to a newer platform. It is currently exporting a xfs file system with facl's , and these work well with both new and old client machines. I have tried to replicated this on Ubuntu and , discovered that I need nfs v3 and facls support compiled into the kernel, I believe that RHEL6 / CentOS 6 should have this support, but I'm still not seeing the correct results. The client doesn't have the facls , and when writing files over the export the default facls are not correctly propagated. What have I missed in the configuration ? Thanks GM -- - TLA - three letter acronym ... - We are loosing the art of communication through progress.. KDE 4.7.2 bug: entries added via kmenuedit don't show up in menu
by Peter Reutemann 23 Nov '11

Hi there Just came across an annoying bug in kmenuedit in 4.7.2, when adding custom launchers. After clicking "Save" the launchers don't show up in the menu. After some digging around I came across the following thread: http://kubuntuforums.net/forums/index.php?topic=3118688.0 A quick fix, thanks to this thread, is to go into the following directory: $HOME/.local/share/applications And remove the following lines from the affected .desktop files: OnlyShowIn= Path[$e]= That will make the entries appear again in the menu (just log out and in again). Oneric Oncelot
by Chris O'Halloran 30 Oct '11

30 Oct '11

Greetings all, I'm just writing to find out how people have gone with their Oneric Oncelot upgrade. I upgraded my laptop to the latest Ubuntu [1] or more correctly Kubuntu [2]. The three issues that I have encountered so far are: 1. the power management means the laptop no longer turns off via the normal interface. I have to use the power reset button to turn the laptop off 2. the second issue which has now resolved involved a number of attempts at migrating my mail across to the new akonandi set up. 3. the third issue I've encountered is that the laptop takes a very long time to get to a usable desktop after logging in via kdm Overall, kubuntu is getting more polished now at release 4.7.1. it will be interesting to see how the new database driven personal information manager (PIM) works. As a means of generating some discussion, I thought I would invite others to outline some of the issues they have had in upgrading. So, how has gone for you? We will be announcing an AGM shortly. This is to vote on the committee members for next year. John Billings will be stepping down as club treasurer since he is moving to Wellington. Prior to the AGM Ronnie will be taking over the role of treasurer. If you are interested in taking on a role within the committee please contact me in the coming weeks. If you feel someone would be good for the role, perhaps nudged them and see if they might be interested in standing. Finally, as club president I am inviting anyone interested in presenting a pet topic to contact me for our next wlug Monday meeting. The meeting is scheduled for October 31. Please contact me off list if you are interested. As an aside, I am writing this e-mail using DragonDictate. It is working pretty well. big problem with openoffice & libreoffice...
by Bruce Kingsbury 10 Oct '11

10 Oct '11

Cairo's been writing fanfiction lately, originally using openoffice .. and most of the time it works fine, but every now and then when she saves and exits she ends up with a zero-byte file. There's plenty of free disk space and I don't see anything in /var/log/messages indicating filesystem trouble, so I tried updating openoffice .. and a while later it happened again. The next time I switched to libreoffice, and set it to always make a backup. Today she's had the same problem again and lost about 40 pages of writing. There's still plenty of free disk space, nothing in /var/log/messages to indicate a filesystem problem, and NO backup. All I know is she's not accidentally highlighting and deleting everything because what gets saved is 0 bytes, NOT an empty document... I've already suggested (after the first time) that she needs to keep regular backups on google docs, or just write everything directly in google docs, but openoffice/libreoffice should NOT be this unreliable and I've never heard of anyone else having similar problems.. Any idea what might be going on here? other technical details; it's a fairly default and up to date install of Ubuntu 10.04 LTS with a default filesystem (I think that's ext4)

Hey all, If you're particularly attached to any of Google's grey wintery dull photos of Hamilton streets you might wanna grab copies. Saw a silver Falcon with a slim 8-camera pole on the roof (4 at top, 4 at base) in town around noon today. Was so nice and sunny out I nearly waved. Show of hands for Saturday workshop October 1
by Chris O'Halloran 24 Sep '11

24 Sep '11

Hello everyone, The WLUG committee are considering organising a Saturday Workshop at the Uni for October 1. Can we have a 'show of hands' on who is likely to turn up, please? We had a few problems with last month's workshop and it would be good to avoid that scenario again. On behalf of club, I would like to apologise to those members of this list who had travelled some distance for last month's particular workshop and found it not happening. As club president, I had made some assumptions about the attendance of others that often organise and champion the workshop day. Recognising that they could be a problem on the Saturday morning of the event, I made what I believed were sufficient arrangements with Univerisity security stafff and communicated this to the club member that believed would be attending. Unfortunately the communication was only one way and I had to leave Hamilton for a prior arrangment. Sorry for the mix up. So, please reply to this list if you wish to be part of Saturday workshop on October 1 Cheers, Chris O'Halloran WLUG president.

Re: [wlug] How Microsoft Can Lock Linux Off Windows 8 PCs
by GJB 23 Sep '11

Any type of "locked" electronic devices have proven to be less valuable than their "unlocked" counterparts. It is not in the interest of commodity hardware manufacturers to allow MS to essentially lock their devices. A new industry in jail-breaking PC's is just around the corner probably. > -------- Original Message -------- > Subject: [wlug] How Microsoft Can Lock Linux Off Windows 8 PCs > From: Peter Reutemann <fracpete(a)waikato.ac.nz> > Date: Thu, September 22, 2011 9:51 am > To: wlug <wlug(a)list.waikato.ac.nz> > > > Just came across this gem here on slashdot: > "Windows 8 PCs will use the next-generation booting specification > known as Unified Extensible Firmware Interface (UEFI). How Microsoft Can Lock Linux Off Windows 8 PCs
by Peter Reutemann 21 Sep '11

21 Sep '11

Just came across this gem here on slashdot: "Windows 8 PCs will use the next-generation booting specification known as Unified Extensible Firmware Interface (UEFI). In fact, Windows 8 logo devices will be required to use the secure boot portion of the new spec. Secure UEFI is intended to thwart rootkit infections by using PKI authentication before allowing executables or drivers to be loaded onto the device. Problem is, unless the device manufacturer gives a key to the device owner, it can also be used to keep the PC's owner from wiping out the current OS and installing another option, such as Linux." http://linux.slashdot.org/story/11/09/21/062231/How-Microsoft-Can-Lock-Linu… Network world has an article, too: http://www.networkworld.com/community/blog/next-gen-boot-spec-could-forever… I wonder whether we'll have to start paying for "advanced features" like being able to put other OSes on a computer when purchasing one in the future... Does the EULA of Windows then still allow a refund if you don't want the software? Will you be able to install something else on the computer then? Or is this an opportunity to get lower prices on computers if they come with Linux pre-installed (no key necessary, no OEM fee)? GNOME Workspace issue
by Sandy 18 Sep '11

18 Sep '11

I've suddenly noticed that I'm unable to switch between workspaces. Neither clicking on the workspace applet nor Ctrl+Alt+Left/Right arrow work any more, and I'm at a loss as to why this might be. I can still send windows to another workspace, but I can no longer get to them. Would anyone have any ideas about why this is happening? This is 11.04 x64.

As part of the :ii project, it would be interested to try installing on various laptops and desktops that I wouldn't normally have access to. At this point it will format whatever is on the hard drive and install Linux or Windows with a predetermined configuration and software set. So if you want, and don't mind the drive getting formatted, please bring systems that can run through a test install or two. Cheers, -chris http://instantinfrastructure.org

SFD 2011: Gimp for photo restoration and touch-up
by Peter Reutemann 12 Sep '11

12 Sep '11

Hi everyone Just a quick announcement regarding the "Gimp for photo restoration and touch-up" presentation that Jody, my wife, will be giving at Software Freedom Day this Saturday. Feel free to bring photos that need restoring or touching up. If you don't have digital versions of the photos, that doesn't matter as we can scan them at the event. Of course, she'll only be able to work on a limited number of photos during the presentation and throughout the day, so please don't feel left out if your photo can't be looked at. However, looking over her shoulder and talking to her should give you a good idea on how to enhance the photos yourself. Hi Chris, I've added you for the 2:30 time slot. You are also welcome to come and setup in the foyer area and demo/talk about your project. If other people are interested in setting up and showing of whatever cool interesting project or application they are currently working on/interested in etc... just let us know. For instance there was a great demo on FOSS musical applications last time we held SFD at the uni. If someone wants to do something like that again, we'd love to see it. I will have a small display w/ a midi-controller and LMMS ready, but I can't remember who it was who demonstrated Arduor and some other music apps last time. We'd also like to invite Windows/Mac users to show off any FOSS applications they may be running on their platform. If your interested in a presentation or setting up in the foyer area let us know so we can add you to the page here: http://elgg.wlug.org.nz/pg/pages/view/252/presenters Best, John Billings On Mon, Sep 12, 2011 at 4:28 AM, Chris McClimans <wlug(a)hippiehacker.org> wrote: > A couple of guys from Tauranga want to introduce the local community to a > project call instant infrastructure. ii (Instant Infrastructure)
by Chris McClimans 11 Sep '11

11 Sep '11

A couple of guys from Tauranga want to introduce the local community to a project call instant infrastructure <http://ii.code.org.nz>. We are presenting at SFD in Tauranga Sunday! We want to enable non-technical people to install operating systems and applications (in possibly complex and interdependent configurations) to computers that have blank or format-able hard drives. The computers may be configured to be centrally managed over the network for ongoing support and maintenance. This could happen from a smart phone or usb stick... On the technical side I've be trying to get Virtualbox booting the infrastructure from Ubuntu and after that it won't be long until it's selfhosted starting from Windows, OSX, or Linux. This would allow people from many different experience levels and backgrounds to participate in sharing solutions. This process starts by using most computers ability to run programs from the network <http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Preboot_Execution_Environment>, even if they don't have anything on the hard drive. It's possible to target raw hardware in addition to cross platform virtualization <http://www.virtualbox.org/> which we can script/automate via ruby <http://mitchellh.github.com/virtualbox/>. We can automatically provision<http://vagrantup.com/docs/provisioners/chef_solo.html> them via chef-solo <http://wiki.opscode.com/display/chef/Chef+Solo> with vagrant<http://vagrantup.com/> . We want to test the hardware and virtually deployed systems using test cookbooks <http://junglist.gen.nz/blog/2011/08/13/minitest-0-0-5-released/>. This is the ticket <https://github.com/passionengine/ii/issues/2> I'm working on today, take a peek if your interested. We'd love to present at Software Freedom Day in Hamilton and gain feedback from the community on how to incorporate more people into the process and make it a tool everyone can use. I tried to add us to the presenters<http://elgg.wlug.org.nz/pg/pages/view/252/presenters>page, but I was only able to add a comment. I see three time-slots remaining, could we have one? WLUG now has Elgg (open source social networking)
by Chris O'Halloran 08 Sep '11

08 Sep '11

Hello all WLUG list subscribers, Since Peter Reutemann's presentation on Elgg at our last Monday evening meeting, Peter, Ewen Cummings and John Billings have been working to establish Elgg on the wlug server. Elgg is open source social networking software and our case, is another avenue for WLUG club members to interact online. You can share photos, create discussion forums, write your own blog, link in your twitter feed, and follow discussions via RSS. There are many more plugins available and the site will continue to receive additional features. The existing wiki is not being superseded by this at all and will still be the place to document technical and linux related things. So it is my pleasure to extend this invitation to all members and list subscribers to check out Elgg, create yourself a profile, upload a photo of yourself and have a bit of play on the site - maybe even create a group for your own pet topics and invite others to join. http://elgg.wlug.org.nz/ The following site lists many of the plugins available to the site. If you'd like to see them added, please contact me, Peter, Ewen or John. http://community.elgg.org/pg/plugins Thanks again to Peter, Ewen and John for setting this up and creating a there to match the existing server. Cheers and regards, Chris O'Halloran WLUG President.

Introductions and Instant Infrastructure
by Chris McClimans 24 Aug '11

24 Aug '11

Hello Local Linux Community, I'm an opensource enthusiast who has recently moved to the area and looking to get a bit more connected. I'm currently working on an instant infrastructure project to assist small to medium offices (non-profits and education are my primary targets) setup a functioning centrally managed computing and network infrastructure. The initial code is up at github. https://github.com/passionengine/ii/wiki Long term we should be able to boot an entire infrastructure from a smartphone or simple network device and create usb boot sticks for anything that doesn't do pxe booting. It will take bare metal machines (no os, no virtualiziation) and build them up with Ubuntu, XP, and/or Vista configured with a chef-client to keep them maintained centrally via a chef based infrastructure. I'm hoping to pull a demo together by mid-september and present at Software Freedom Day weekend (Waikato on Saturday and St. Mary's on Sunday). I'd been keen to have coffee or chat with anyone interested in working with me on this project. Cheers, -chris

Software Freedom Day 2011
by John Billings 10 Aug '11

SFD 2011 is a little more than a month away, and I'm just wondering who all wants to be involved. It's on 17th September this year. We are planning to have it at Uni, at the very least we can use our regular meeting room, and have a really low key day, or in the past we held it in the S block building foyer, and used some of the lecture rooms to do presentations. I was over at the Uni today and talked to Sally Jo and she seemed to think that would be fine if we wanted to have it there again. The NZCS meeting today was about the Linux cluster there, and the presenter said he'd be keen to give a talk/demo the cluster at SFD. We will be putting up a display at the library first week of September, as all the boards were booked the second week, and distributing some flyers around. If anyone remembers what we did in 2007, I thought that went well, having some tables set up w/ different demos and information, and we ran presentations throughout the day. I'm good for one table, and one presentation on something (possibly 20 years of Linux?) So let me know who all wants to be involved and what you would like to do. Best, John

Upcoming NZCS event
by Eric Light 03 Aug '11

03 Aug '11

Hi all, NZCS is running an event at the University next week entitled "High Performance Computing: Inside Waikato University's Symphony Cluster". It's going to be presented by Donald Neal, from the high-performance computing arm of The University of Waikato - he's the main man who keeps their Symphony cluster running. This is going to be a pretty cool presentation, and I thought it would fit with this group's interests well. It's going to be a bit more technical than many of our other events, and at the end we're hoping to be able to actually have a quick tour of the server room. A light lunch is also included. More info and registration here: http://bit.ly/rjr61q Hope to see some of you there! Cheers, - Eric
